It rained on the Rose Garden picture that President Bush hoped to take with his predecessors, including his father, and his successor, President-elect Barack Obama, at the White House today.
So the nation's living and future presidents assembled in the Oval Office for a family photo before lunch in the private dining room of the White House. The five men stood side-by-side and close together in front of Bush's desk. President Bush looked at Obama several times as he spoke and Obama nodded his head. They shook hands.
"How are you guys? Good to see you,'' Obama told the group.
"I want to thank the president-elect for joining the ex-presidents for lunch,'' Bush said. "And one message that I have and I think we all share is that we want you to succeed.
"Whether we're Democrat or Republican, we care deeply about this country,'' Bush said: "And to the extent we can we look forward to sharing our experiences with you. All of us who have served in this office understand that the office itself transcends the individual and we wish you all the very best and so does the country."
"I just want to thank the president for hosting us,'' Obama said. "This is an extraordinary gathering. All the gentlemen here understand both the pressures and possibilities of this office, and for me to have the opportunity to get advice, good counsel and fellowship with these individuals is extraordinary and I'm very grateful to all of them. But again thank you, Mr. President, for hosting.''

Nice photo; nice to see them all smiling. I hope they dined on tomato soup and cheese sandwiches, so as not to upset Bubba and vla and John D.

John D,
Too bad the Left expected at least ONE achievement in 8 years, and too bad the Right voted him in in the first place. "Scum?" You're referring to the vast majority of Americans who can't wait for him to head for Midland. (And aren't you the first to whine about namecalling in the Swamp? Seems you missed the class on "class.")

I hope Barack realizes that his only real friend in that photo is Jimmy Carter.
I'm tickled at the little one ups manship game the Bushes play with the neckties.
They have their spotters, their "peeps", check out what tie Barack is wearing as he leaves for a WH appointment (like the one in Dec.) and then pull out a matching one to put on to greet him. Another little dig to say "we're still in charge and watching you".
That photo of Barack yesterday was quite smashing, the navy blue (silk blend?) suit and blue tie.
Very appropriate for the candidate who turned the map of the US BLUE.
He and Bush also seem to have the same Tiffany lapel pin.
(I suggested he get one of those last summer. Seems to have brought very good luck indeed.)

How funny that your post- which was just meant to ridicule and attack John D- calls HIM a namecalling thug. While I certainly don't agree with his assessment, he at least was making a point related to the meeting today. You, my friend, were actually the one just namecalling.

Israel and Palestine are both responsible for using thugs tactics over the years. Neocon nutjobs like yourself are the only one's who refuse to acknowledge that.

Mr. Big Orange Satan,
I can, at least, differentiate between right and wrong.
Israel agrees to a daily cease-fire. Jimmy Carter's Terrorist friends take advantage of the opportunity by firing off more rockets into the civilian population of Israel. Most predictable, but what kind of knucklehead military strategy is that? Fozzie Bear has a better ability for reasoning than your standard run-of-the-mill Liberal.

Dude, Obama requested this luncheon, not "W". I'm a Republican and even I know Bush can't match Obama's intellect and classiness. Buxh is the worst President in the last 40 years...easy! Even Nixon did a better job.
Posted by: Mike | January 8, 2009 10:32 AM
Mike says he is a "republican," but yet doesn't cite Jimmy Carter as the worst or second worst president in the past 40 years?
On the Israel-Palestinian issue: Israel gives Palestinians control of the West Bank and Gaza strip. That was suppose to make the situation better there, yet Hamas still fired 3,000 rockets into Israel last year. Yet, somehow this recent flare-up is the fault of Bush and the Israelis? My, looniness really does exist in the Weird Alternative Reality World that is the Left.

John D,
Your most accurate comment seems to have irritated the Liberals of Swampland. There is surely no dishonor in that.
We can recognize that President Bush has his shortcomings, as has every man to have held this most difficult postion. He probably did go to Washington thinking that he could work with democrats because he was very effective in working with Tx democrats. We may can assume from this that non-Tx democrats are yet a different species.
G. Bush I and II have generally been gracious to the opposition and have tried to find that elusive common ground. Whether it be Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Clinton, and less us not forget Tom Daschle, Bush does not go into attack-back dog mode. They both maintained a respectful and gracious treatment of the opposition. That may have been a serious political deficiency for their presidency.
I think that the great Obama would also acknowledge the graciousness of this president, although his still-angry fans won't. They just seem to be part of some kind of cult, but whatever. Liberals, notice also, if you can, the spacing between the ignominious Hamas guy on the right, sans ski mask, and the other four genuine gentleman.
Posted by: Django - N Exile somewhere in/around the 30th Parallel | January 8, 2009 12:27 PM
Django, well said. A minor correction: it wasn't democrats Bush couldn't work with, it was Democrats.
Posted by: DaveB | January 8, 2009 1:41 PM
Django, John incorrectly credited Bush for initiating the meeting and then called us all scum. We said that it was nice to see all of the President dudes together. But you seem to practice selective reading, and history, given your trashing of Pres. Carter; very gracious of you.
Posted by: rupert | January 8, 2009 2:00 PM
Yeah , Carter was smart ebough to stay as far away from the Likud Party Genocide club as much as he could. Remember the American/Israeli slogan: The only good Palestinian is a dead Palestinian! Bomb them, starve them, deny them critical medical supllies, what ever it takes to kill as many Palestinian civilians and children as possible.
Posted by: Salaam | January 8, 2009 2:33 PM
Salaam, for the record, I have not always been behind Israel's actions. But when Hamas and Hezbollah shoot rockets (3,000 of them in 2008) then Israel has all the right to defend itself.
And, while we are on the issue of the only good person is a dead person, isn't it Hamas' STATED belief that Israel be wiped off the face of the planet? Didn't some Palestinian protestors in Ft. Lauderdale recently chant, "GO back to the ovens," and "Nuke Israel" in a recent protest? Sorry, I have little sympathy for the Palestinians. Each year they get hundreds of million of dollars in aid (much from the hated U.S.) and rather than use that money to make their lives better, their leaders steal that money (didn't Arafat have hundreds of millions of dollars stashed away?) or use that money to kill rather than make something of themselves? Do they or do they not train their children to strap on bombs and walk into markets for the purpose of killing innocent people? So, don't cry me a fake river, Salaam. The Israelis may not be completely innocent in all of this, but there is no doubt that the Palestinians are completely and utterly guilty.
Posted by: John D | January 8, 2009 3:41 PM
Thanks John D, for having the courage to admit that you don't care about Palestinians and that you don't value their lives at all. Thank you for admitting that you think Palestinian infants are so completely and utterly guilty, every single one of them, that they desrve to die in the horrible ways that they are at this very moment. Thank you for proving my basic premise. Thank you showing that you, like many, believe the only good Palestinian is a dead Palestinian,. At that basic level, your morality is no different than that of Hamas. You both have genocide in your hearts.
May you someday find peace, and let go of your hate, until all sides in this conflict do, the blood of all will continue. Just think anbout this for a second....Do you think you could tell the difference between the corpse of a dead Israeli child and a dead Palestinian Child?
Posted by: Salaam | January 8, 2009 4:30 PM
It's real simple, Salaam, and can be summed up in a few equations.
No rocketing of southern Israel = No Israeli incursion into Gaza.
No suicide bombing of buses in Israel = No wall to separate the West Bank from Israel.
No obtaining weapons from Iran and other states supporting terrorism = No blockading of Gaza ports.
No Arab saber rattling in 1967 = No Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Golan Heights. (Note that when Egypt made peace with Israel, they got the Sinai, also occupied in 1967, back. The peace-loving Arabs made Sadat pay dearly for that one.)
Shalom.
Posted by: DaveB | January 8, 2009 5:16 PM
Dave B. Thank you for explaining the Likud world view, of the Perfect peace loving Israelis Vs. The entirely evil completely valueless Arabs. Again you prove my thesis. Many Americans and many Israelis, believe exactly the same as you : Palestinian civilians and children deserve nothing but death. You are a spiritual brother of the Hamas supporters who believe the same thing about the Israelis. You see the world throught the same hate filled blood stained lenses they do. I pity you and pity them. It is a terrible way to live.
Posted by: Salaam | January 8, 2009 6:41 PM
Salaam, you distort my views beyond recognition.
I'm an old guy. I've observed this conflict almost since its inception. After the partition of the Palestine mandate in 1948, the Arabs immediately attacked Israel. Through the years, there have been repeated truces, almost always first broken by the Palestinians. When the Israelis retaliate, the Palestinians justify further attacks by claiming that they're just retaliating against the Israelis. What's wrong with this picture? Yasser Arafat almost had a land-for-peace deal during the Clinton administration, but got up and walked out. He was received as a hero, and Ehud Barak lost his office. What's wrong with this picture?
Of course Palestinian civilians and children don't deserve death. But the Palestinians have to realize that if they harbor people who carry out attacks on a neighbor, retribution is sure to come and a certain number of them will be injured or die. The solution: Stop harboring the terrorists. Perhaps the current conflict will drive that lesson home.
The Palestinians always seem to campaign for the Israeli hard-liners. When Bibi Netanyahu first ran, there were major attacks within Israel, the effect of which was to push Bibi over the top. Now he's running again, and the attacks have ben going on again. What's the effect of Palestinian attacks on Israel? They tell the Israeli populace that they have to be tough with those Palestinians, and that translates to votes.
Sorry, but it appears to me that the Palestinians just want eternal war. In wars, people die, and they're not all combatants. Israel is more powerful, and more determined, than its enemies. If it's eternal war they want, eternal war they'll get.
Shalom.

DaveB, Again, you only prove my point. Your insistance that Israel is in no way responsible for the 60 year cycle of violence shows it. You believe all of Israel's actions, killing, and agression are justified. You justify the slaughtering of civilians in Palestine. You justify bombing schools crammed with refugee civilians. Tell me DaveB, If another country started bombing America, and killing American civilians and children until we changed our government, would you agree? If Iraq started blowing up American schools until we turned over the Blackwater killers, would you agree to turn them over? If it was the body of your dead wife you saw smouldering in the street, who would you blame? If it was your grandkids who couldn't get food or medicine, would you be fighting to have the blackwater thugs turned over? No of course you wouldn't. You'd be fighting those who harmed your people.
But then you think your family is far more valuable than any evil Palestinian. Palestians aren't humans to you, they are the sub-human enemy that deserves no pity or consideration, only the application of maximum force.
Posted by: Salaam | January 9, 2009 10:51 AM
Salaam, I'm not carrying any water for either the Israelis or the Palestinians. I'm neither Jewish nor Muslim, and am not of Eastern European or Middle Eastern extraction. I'm just an observer.
You're right, we wouldn't tolerate any of the scenarios that you describe. Neither should the Israelis have to tolerate the rocketing of their towns from across the border, and they're not.
Here's a little experiment for Hamas to try. No more rockets, no more suicide bombers, just constructive discussion. It would take time for trust to build, but my guess would be that the whole problem would go away.
Good day.
