Most Americans returned to normal life after 9/11, Bush said -- 'I never did.'

President Bush, delivering a televised farewell to the nation tonight, attempted to summon a collective sense of "gratitude'' for several years of safety following the stunning terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that shaped his presidency.

It's a measure of the impact that the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon had on the agenda of the two terms of the Bush presidency that now, in his final days, Bush is touting one signal success: Nothing has happened since then. "There have been good days and tough days,'' he said, but the nation has not suffered another crippling attack on his watch.

And it's a measure of the impact of the "global war on terror'' -- as the president came to call everything involving a conflict with terrorists and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - that both his first and final televised addresses from the White House during eight years in office revolved around 9/11.

"This evening, my thoughts return to the first night I addressed you from this house - September 11, 2001,'' Bush said in his televised address from the East Room.

"As the years passed, most Americans were able to return to life much as it had been before 9/11,'' Bush said. "But I never did. Every morning, I received a briefing on the threats to our nation. And I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe.''

The night of the 9/11 attacks, after returning to the White House, the president delivered a televised address in which Bush stated: "Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts.... America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day''

And in this final address, the president who had warned a nation about "the axis of evil'' in Iraq, Iran and North Korea, was again speaking of the greater conflict in the world, as he sees it.

"I have often spoken to you about good and evil,'' Bush said tonight. "This has made some uncomfortable. But good and evil are present in this world, and between the two there can be no compromise.''

The president, who has acknowledged some of his mistakes and disappointments in the closing days, asked for a pass in this, his closing statement to the American public.

"There is legitimate debate about many of these decisions,'' he said. "But there can be little debate about the results. America has gone more than seven years without another terrorist attack on our soil...

"Like all who have held this office before me, I have experienced setbacks,'' Bush said. "There are things I would do differently if given the chance.

"Yet I have always acted with the best interests of our country in mind,'' he said. "I have followed my conscience and done what I thought was right. You may not agree with some tough decisions I have made. But I hope you can agree that I was willing to make the tough decisions.''

Citing the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and a "transformed'' intelligence community and FBI, he insisted that the nation is safer as a result. And pointing to the wars that the United States has fought in Afghanistan and Iraq for much of his presidency, he asserted: "With strong allies at our side, we have taken the fight to the terrorists and those who support them.''

The president's prime-time farewell address, broadcast by news networks from the East Room of the White House, marks his final planned public appearance before traveling to the Capitol on Tuesday for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. He spoke to not only a television audience, but also an invited audience in the hall that include his wife, Laura Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and relatives of 9/11 victims, including the mother of a police officer whose badge he still keeps.

It was only one of several closing statements on his own presidency, however, as Bush marked the end of eight years in office with a series of self-assessments of his own controversial administration and the legacy that he hopes to leave in public appearances, interviews and one final news conference.

"We must continue to engage the world with confidence and clear purpose,'' Bush said Thursday night. "In the face of threats from abroad, it can be tempting to seek comfort by turning inward... If America does not lead the cause of freedom, that cause will not be led.''

Earlier this week, with his 47th and final planned news conference at the White House, Bush delivered a more critical assessment of his own record, acknowledging several "mistakes'' and "disappointments'' that he made and faced along the way.

Starting with the "Mission Accomplished' banner strung across an aircraft carrier where he declared that major combat operations in Iraq had been completed several weeks after the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, Bush allowed that some of his "rhetoric was a mistake'' - an allusion to tough talk about hunting down al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden "dead or alive'' and other declarations that Bush had made in the war on terror.

The abuse of American-held prisoners at the Abu Ghraib military prison in Iraq remains one of his disappointments, he said, as does the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the then-stated premise for the ouster of Iraq's Saddam Hussein.

But there was little trace of personal remorse or confessional accounting in Bush's final televised address, a 15-minute, personal appeal to a public that largely has lost confidence in the 43rd president - with his public approval ratings hovering below 30 percent in his closing months.

Two-thirds of the public voices optimism that Obama will perform well as president, according to the Gallup Poll, and a new Pew Research Center poll has found that the Democrat holds a favorable rating among 79 percent of Americans surveyed.

Acknowledging the popularity of his slated successor, the retiring president offered his own encouragement for Obama, the first African-American to take the oath of office as president.

"Standing on the steps of the Capitol will be a man whose story reflects the enduring promise of our land,'' the retiring president said. "This is a moment of hope and pride for our whole mation. And I join all Americans in offering best wishes to President-elect Obama, his wife Michelle, and their two beautiful girls.''

As for himself, Bush said: "It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as your president. There have been good days and tough days. But every day I have been inspired by the greatness of our country and uplifted by the goodness of our people.
"And so, my fellow Americans, for the final time: Good night,'' said Bush, who will travel Friday to Camp David for his final weekend at the mountain presidential retreat. On Tuesday morning, before Obama's swearing in at the Capitol, Bush will welcome his successor to the White House.

I am thankful for the President's integrity of character as he served us and honored the Office of the President . He always expressed gratitude for those who serve in local agencies to protect our freedom, including all the military persons.

How does one go about restoring a tattered public legacy in one prime time speech? Yes, his poll numbers have gone up recently, but that's probably because folks are simply not paying attention to him or the actions of his administration anymore and are fll-on to the Obama era.

Boy George took this nation to a war of choice under false pretenses -- and left troops in harm's way on two fields of battle. He embraced torture as an interrogation tactic and turned the world's champion of human dignity into an outlaw nation and international pariah. He watched with detachment as a major American city went under water. He was ostensibly at the helm as the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression took hold. He went from being the most popular to the most disappointing president, having squandered a unique opportunity to unite the country and even the world behind a shared agenda after Sept. 11. He set a new precedent for avoiding the general public in favor of screened audiences and seemed to occupy an alternate reality. He took his own political party from seeming permanent majority status to where it is today. And he deliberately politicized the federal government, circumvented the traditional policymaking process, ignored expert advice and suppressed dissent, leaving behind a broken government.

Here's to hoping that Bush's future includes an orange jumpsuit and a jail cell in a Fed prison along with Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Gonzo, Libby and the rest of the Bush crime family.

Get lost W., we won't miss you....

"most Americans were able to return to life much as it had been before 9/11. But I never did. Every morning, I received a briefing on the threats to our nation. And I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe."
-GW Bush

That's because prior to 9/11 Bush wasn't paying any attention to the safety of Americans and he ignored the PDF that said: "BIN-LADEN DETERMINED TO STRIKE INSIDE U.S." !

Say buhbye Prez BunnyPants.

Bush's " Farewell Address " is
seen nationwide in the unemployment lines, food banks, homeless families, bailouts for banking buddies, tax breaks for big oil and on and on.
Please, just go already.

I could just as easily say we are "safe" because I had a little cloth doll of Osama BL and stuck pins in it every night.

If prior recommendations about security had been followed with the airlines, and if the Bush State Dept. wasn't so accommodating to Saudi visa applicants, 9/11 would not have happened.

But those recommendations were ignored; Bush State Dept gave out visas to hijackers.

And they got lucky.

And their replacements haven't got lucky in the interim.

So, Heck uv a job, Bushie!

And GWB exits just in the nick of time.
Now Obama gets to take away our retirement 401k's, medical care, and Social Security.
It now all has to go to the banks and Wall Street houses.
Remember when you thought the only sacrifice for the war on terror was 'go to the mall and visit Disneyland'? Now the real sacrifice is becoming clear.

ornery,
And don't forget Dunderhead Ashcroft requested a $50mil cut in counter terrorism funding on,,,,,, 9/10/2001.

Bush was a good man - honest and patriotic.. he was handed an amazingly dangerous, unprecedented circumstance in 9/11. If there is any one thing I can say that I appreciated in Bush was the way he handled himself with grace and sometimes humor- against often times completely unhinged, usually vitrioloc criticism of him personally.

He was not our best president- but he sure handled the most important part of his job description, our security, with consistency and without use of opinion polls when it often would have been easier both politically and personally to change course. We have seen the results of presidents that don't have that leadership "gene".

I hope Obama can find the same selflessness in his character...

God Bless President Bush. He faced unprecedented challenges during his 8 years in office. He did his best and we should be grateful for his service
Shame on all the people who do nothing but criticize the decisions of those on the firing line everyday. It must be comfortable surfing the internet all day from your armchair.

So long Shrub and thanks for the laughs.

I only watch Bush as filtered and mocked by Jon Stewart.

One can only hope that a large colonial door hits him in the ass on the way out.

I don't know why he bothered with the speech if he had nothing much to say. Very weak speech. If you run for President, you should expect to have to make some tough decisions. You want credit for making tough decisions? Even if they are wrong decisions? I don't think so.

A great thank you to President Bush for leading the effort to protect this country from further terrorist attacks for the past seven years. All issues are insignificant if our country and we are not safe. And he exemplified courage in taking those necessary steps in opposition to many in the media and harpy Democrats in Congress. History will treat George Bush with reverence and more appreciation than all too many people showed him during his terms.

Ya, sure. Buh bye.

Now move over for a real hero,
Captain "Sully" Sullenberger

Goodbye and good riddance for the damage and alienation he caused in our international relationships; for the people who died as a direct result of his orders or compliance with murderous states; for the abuses of the Geneva Convention and torture standards; for eroding the Bill of Rights; for the environmental damage his pro-business policies have delivered, and for the wasteland our economy has become.

I applaud Bush's performance. On 9/12 we were all sure another attack would happen. It didn't.
I'm not so sure about softie Obama. He fought every measure--the Patriot Act, FISA and domestic surveillance to name a few---that prevented a repeat attack. Obama's a popular guy, but popularity and a good presidency, history shows, are not always the same thing. History, not the rabid anti-Bush crowd on this blog, will judge Bush properly.
To others concerned about an Obama presidency: we survived Carter, we'll survive this. God Bless America.

Bush lied us into a war, got thousands of innocent Americans and innocent Iraqi's killed for no reason and committed war crimes and torture in our name His list of blunders and idiotic decisions is to long to list here.
If you want to kiss Bush's ring go right ahead and do so but you'll have excuse the rest of us who live in reality because we are all well aware that Bush is the:

"W"orst

President

Ever !

Bush had a rough presidency, partially his own fault. I do believe the man did what he thought was best for the country- not for himself. The president before did not. You may not like him but if there is one thing you must do is respect his character. I honestly feel that he did his best to keep all us (supporters or not) safe. After 9/11 I think most of us felt vulnerable. It wasn't IF they would attack again, but WHEN. You can argue about what preceded 9/11 but their was another president who preceded this one who was president for 8 years. If you think you can pin 9/11 on Bush, you are lying to yourself and everyone reading your comment. Mr. President, I for one, Thank You!

Good riddance W, One can only hope that you and the rest of the criminals in your administration will face a day of atonement for all the damage you have done to this country and the world through your complete incompetance, ignorance and stupidity.. Dont go away mad, just go away...

Good ridden to the moron.

Levees breaking, WMDs not existing, Bin-Laden attacking the US, the housing bubble popping and Bush has no clue how it could have all happened?

If W ran his Fantasy League teams like he ran the country, he'd finish last every time. Funny thing is, the only "mistake" Bush ever confessed to in public (trading Sammy Sosa) was a decision that I suspect he didn't make...

Good riddens to the sonofabitch.

Bush's farwell is spinning the facts as hard as he spun the "intelligence" that he cherry picked to justify the invasion of Iraq. Why does he get to claim that 9/11 wasn't on his watch? Why do twice as many American GI deaths in Iraq than in NY make sense as a policy? He needs to get real and go.

Stupid people obsessed with guns did this, stupid people obsessed with war did this, stupid people with the "sit down and have beer with him" mentality did this, stupid people obsessed with abortion did this, stupid people who hate people of color, gays, foreigners and peaceful thinking people did this, stupid people who think putting the USA 10 trillion dollars in debt to China and the Arabs somehow empowers America did this, stupid people who think protecting the natural environment around us is not important did this, stupid people who voted for him did this.. it's up to the rest of the intelligent people in this world to make sure it never happens again.

Good Riddance President Idiot, you did not keep us safe, you endangered our lives and crippled our nation and our people while you wasted our money on your greedy self and wife, lived in style in our White House on our money and then patted yourself on the back for it all, and that is how you should be remembered.

Bush was a disaster of the highest magnitude. We don't need historians to tell us that:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/14/bush.political.legacy/index.html

Let Crazy Joe Devola, The Professor, and all the other deluded Cons pine for his Presidency. For the rest of us, it's Good Riddance!

Clap him in irons!!

The man should have never been president once let alone twice. Because of him, his cronies and the republican party this nation has gone down the drain... I say good riddance to him and hopefully his party will learn to work to improve our country and not just their pocketbooks.

WE GAVE BUSH A PASS FOR
ALLOWING A DEVASTATING
TERRORIST ATTACK
ON SEPT 11
DOES EVERY PRESIDENT
GET FORGIVEN FOR
ALLOWING ONE TERRORIST
ATTACK ON THEIR WATCH ?

OR JUST GEORGE W. BUSH?

*it had already been tried once before and they said they'd be back so he can't claim surprise

The Bush apologists must be at Disney world. This guy and his cohorts have sabotaged every element of our American government. I will not trouble you with all the Agencies and Departments that have been run by his cronies, ideologues, in most cases, who had one thing in mind, obstruct Agencies and Department's mandated duties. To not see sabotage or refuse to see it, is down right, self-delusional.
The Iraq War and subsequent Occupation, and all of the of " missing " Billions of Dollars, of taxpayers monies, is criminal and someone shall pay for these offenses. The same day the Madoff scam broke out in the papers, it was reported that 318 Billion Dollars were " missing " from the Iraqi reconstruction funds. Not a ripple, was seen or heard across America. It was, by then, from this administration, seen as " not news ", it became, all too common.
Need I mention the second disaster to hit New Orleans, the negligence and malfeasance of the Bush administration, from the fermeldihyde fumes-filled trailers to the casual concern shown, by " Brownie " and his modeling crew. These two false steps alone, by any other administration, would have landed them out on their ear, after their first term, but, as we learned, they became effective distorters, obfuscators, half-truth sayers and, out right, liars and were re-elected, to a more disastrous term, if that is, at all possible !!
I had always thought that it was a toss-up between, who the worst President was, I ever saw !! Was it President Nixon or President Reagan and I had come to the conclusion, that there could never be any President that would come close to the phoniness and incompetence of President Reagan !! Well, the Republicans and the Neocons of this nation have given us a President , that comes close to matching those remarkably low standards, that President Reagan had set, in his, unbelievable, two terms !! The amazing element that both administrations share, they have both been cited for malfeasance and criminal actions, or non-actions !! That is the direct results of sticking ideologues in every facet a an administration, instead of competent and honorable men and women !! When will these shallow and mean-spirited ideologues figure that one out !!? In the fifth election cycle, from today ???
America, I hope you are tired of this type of Republican, that tells you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, but then is party to, overpricing them, to the point where not many of us can afford them !! That is the Republican Party's real problem, their position is basically anti-democratic, but it is pro-capitalism. So, they try to deceive the nation with platitudes and wars, hoping to bully the electorate into accepting their oligarchy and it just will not succeed !! President-elect Obama is proof of that !!
Good luck, President-elect Obama !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I can't believe Bush thinks this country has not been attacked by terrorists since 9/11. Is he not aware of the gang wars in the country? Just the amount of deaths of children in Illinois is staggering and unacceptable. When is this country going to fight the wars that occur daily in our neighborhoods. There are plenty of terrorists here in the US that prey on our citizens - we need to take care of seniors and our children.

Bush is so enamored with himself, he will never see the truth on how he is responsible for more americans dying that the 911 attachers.

He has failed to admit that his administration has done more to divide and destroy this country than any administration in the last century.

He accepts no responsibility for giving away billions of dollars in Iraq and rght here in America, to his supporters with little to no accounting, while vetoing the expansion of childrens health care for Americans.

He is a callous selfcentered rich kid, who played with peoples lives and families just to see what would happen.

Too bad he will never see and live the pain and suffering his follies have caused so many American famlies.

May he rot in some place worse than hell.

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Ah ha ha ha ha -- good one George.

All these kudos, and y'all still don't know what the midnight pardons are.

One reason W didn't do anything about
Clinton's midnight pardons including Marc Rich (apart from the fact Scooter Libby, Rich's atty, was Cheney's chief of staff), was he was looking forward to doing the same thing himself, just like Poppy pardoned all the Iran Contra convicts.

And that "aw shucks" Texas cowboy routine didn't fool some of us for a minute.

Everything this guy did was premeditated.

David Letterman's writers will miss W, though.

I also want to thank the President for several other thing that didn't happen during his terms. Not once did my cat talk, nor did my house catch a cold, nor did the entire east coast of the United States fall into an unreversable coma, nor did Godzilla once trample Japan. He prevented all these things with his sure hands, devout patriotism and "golly gee" homespun good ol' boyness. I can only sit back in horror to think of how thing might have been without him at the helm. NOT!

Don't let the screen door hit ya' where the good Lord split ya', GW.

Though President Bush will take a great deal of bashing on the economy and his lack of immigration reform, one must give him credit for his performance during a disastrous time. It is amazing how the people stood behind and cheered Bush with His "Don't Tread on Me" attitude towards Terrorist, only to turn on him when the going got rough.

Truman and FDR were viewed the same way when they left office, fast forward 30 years and history looked back on their presidency's with success. Same will happen for Bush.

I'm getting real tired of having people blaming everything on Bush. That's the biggest cop out ever.

Some dood is posting under my name.
I am ture Bushman, not Bushman! How can it be done here in the modern agfe. I speak fof bush, not bushmen!

Thank You for all you have done to keep us safe ! ! ! !

You did what you thought was right and when you didn't I did what I could to let you know, can others say that ? No they can't !

Thanks for all of your tireless and unrewarded efforts. You were are our president and you know what, we survived !

I know President Bush is to much of a gentleman to say it, but I will all you Bush haters and other lowlifes..,you should all be ashamed of yourselves, so kill our collected asses.

How convenient of all of those "God Bless President Bush" republicans to have given the man a free pass for the terrorist attack he DID allow - a whopping 9 months and two weeks into his presidency.

So let's get one thing straight, Bush-fans: if heaven forbid there is another attack during the Obama administration, you'll surely give him a free pass as well as long as it's the only one, right?

And perhaps Mr. Obama will be the one to actually bring the 9/11 mastermind to justice.

You know, Bin Laden? The man who plotted and organized the 9/11 attacks? The man who Bush said he'd get "dead or alive"? The man who still lives 8 years later?

Shame on all of you for using blind faith to lavish respect on a man who took the nation to war with a country we had no business going to war with. The blood of thousands of American men and women lies on Mr. Bush's hands.

I for one welcome the Obama era, where thought, intellect, and strength will matter far more than tough talk and frontier justice.

Too little, too late. In a last minute effort to make people care about him, he decides to hold a televised address to the nation. He chose to ignore all those who criticized him to pursue a rogue agenda. Anybody who dared question his policies was depicted as unpatriotic. Even his own press secretary stated they don't care about public opinion. He made a mockery of America's reputation in the international arena. While I agree that he set the stage for improving national security, he caused more ire in the world. Bush seemingly was oblivious during the Katrina disaster. And the financial crisis? That's what his legacy will be. He chose to do nothing until it became painfully apparent that we needed help. So thank you, Mr President. For the 8 years on what could have been.

Oh, our wonderful great protector who kept us all away from another attack. Give me a break. Raising the terror alert every time his approval ratings dropped (by the way, whatever happened to the terror alert? Haven't heard about it in about a year.) Acting like a smug jock all the time has really won the hearts of all the other countries of the world. Making us look like idiots so that no one who travels wants to admit that they're from the US? Yeah, great president.

George Bush was always the screw-up of the Bush family. So he ran for President to prove himself. Instead, he proved that he was the screw-up of the Bush family. Unfortunately, he did it on a very large stage.

Faint praise is the most "darning" condemnation. Thank you, Bushies, for providing much stronger condemnation in your posts than any "Bush Hater" (like me -- I do despise him) could provide. E.g.:

"He always expressed gratitude...for the military." Wow, takes a big man to do that.

"A good man, honest and patriotic..." I'd take issue with both, but even so, aren't these basic job requirements?

"Leading the effort to prevent terrorist attacks" -- Again, that's pretty much his job. If you give him an "A" for fufilling a basic job requirement, does that mean he gets a "C" for slacking off? (9/11 did happen on his watch, and after a month-long vacation."

Finally, "he did what he thought was best for the country." Big deal. The same can be said of every losing football coach.Trying hard, again, is a basic obligation, not a distinguishing attribute.

All said and done, the most the Bushies say is that he only let one devastating errorist attack happen. George Bush is the worst thing to happen to this country in my 45 years, and will certainly be remembered as a complete failure. Good riddance, you loathsome beast.

Good riddance, you lying skunk!

Clearly the worst President since Hoover and most dishonest ever. Thanks, Ralph Nader (and U.S. Supreme Court) for sticking us with this scumbag. Gore would have been much better.

This country is in ruins because of this man's "character." It simply amazes me that anyone can find anything good to say about him. I guess you all must still have your jobs, don't have anyone serving in the military fighting a country that didn't attack us, you haven't lost your home, etc. etc. I can't wait for him to be gone. I'm betting we won't hear a thing about him and his future "achievements" going forward, once he's planted in his whites-only millionaires' neighborhood.

I certainly wouldn't try to speak to Bush's internal thoughts. It appears he DID try to do what he thought he needed to do, and it MIGHT BE that he put the country's interests before his own (or at least that he put the interests of the people who put him in office ahead of his own). Whatever he was thinking for the past 8 years -- IF he was thinking the past 8 years -- is irrelevant. What we're left with is a country weakened and left financially endangered, Did he act PERSONALLY to bring about and encourage those things? No. Did he act in a manner that could have indicated, at the VERY least, that he was aware of ALL the dangers we faced and that he was choosing the best, sanest, most responsible way of fighting against our problems? Also -- NO.
.
Bush didn't hire people to fly planes into buildings on 9/11. He also didn't pay attention to any evidence post-9/11 that didn't fit the scenario he wanted to build. He didn't take evidence PRE-9/11 seriously enough. Consequently, 9/11 happened, and it was used to hammer home an agenda that Bush built based on personal grudges rather than fact. The person commenting that he did as much to prevent a repeat attack in the seven years by sticking a cloth doll with a pin as Bush did is right. We weren't attacked -- by planes (there WERE anthrax attacks) -- on U.S.Continental soil (we had attacks to our embassies, which righties used to argue Clinton's guilt during his administration) -- but that doesn't indicate any success by Bush, who spent just about his whole time in office oblivious to nearly everything. At some point, unless the Arab problem resolves, we will be attacked again. I hope it's not in my lifetime, and I hope we're able to keep it as minor as possible when it happens, but it WILL happen.
.
Bush's existence has been nothing but one big failure after another and the sooner he's out of public life and back on his "ranch" in Texas playing cowboy, the better. I spit on his memory.

I, for one, am relieved that it was Bush who was our president on 9/11/01. I can't even begin to imagine what a farce it might have been had the attack happened under Clinton's watch.

Joe Citizen wrote:
...DOES EVERY PRESIDENT
GET FORGIVEN FOR

ATTACK ON THEIR WATCH?..."

Well, your flawed memory does not remember that several attempts happened under Clinton's watch, and he CHOSE not to pursue Bin Laden.

You must have a selective liberal memory, Joe.

I will be forever grateful to George W. Bush for his service to our country. I voted for Obama and heartily support him, but the Bush bashers are just plain mean-spirited.

I really do not understand how anyone can have a shred of respect for this man.... I mean, the whole of Western Civilization (i.e. our allies) want to prosecute him and put him away for war crimes he committed. The "War on Terror" is a bunch of poo - 9/11 was planned and executed by our very own "leaders".... how much money and contracts did our little Bush cronies get out of 9/11?

Seriously, you Bush supporters, albeit you are a small group, need to get your heads out of the sand. Can one of you explain to me how you could possibly take this snorting, chuckling goon seriously?

We have had eight years of his, and his parties, delusions, ignorance and stubbornness. Eight long years of the erosion of the economy, the ballooning of our debts and the waste of tax-payers dollars. And he and his supporters think we are safe??? Yeah, maybe from Muslim terrorists, but what about our own brand of terrorism? He and his cronies have done more harm to this country than any foreign invaders could. Thanks to all of you Bush supporters for just standing by and letting it happen. And thank you George W. Bush for being the WORST President in history. I'm just so lucky to have witnessed it! Barf.

Wow, we have lost the two men whose lives revolved around fantasy the past two days. One is the man who ran Fantasy Island. A place where the women were attractive, the midgets were cool, and washed up actors and actresses could live another day before the ultimate form of regurgitation, reality TV. The other, Fantasy man, our President. The one who lived in a world of Weapons of Mass Destruction instead of a world where Bin Laden continues to remain free to strike at us again. One Fantasy Island was a lame TV show, the other, the fear of what comes next.

BUSH LIED - THOUSANDS DIED ....pretty much sums up his legacy.

More False Bravado -

I don't know if I'm more frightened that so many of us voted for him or that we now have many more enemies. The rest of the world now thinks we're a threat to them.

George W. Bush has put the American people in more danger than anyone.

Thanks for putting us on the most wanted list George.

Good thing we will no longer have the "culture of corruption" to worry about. Uhh, I mean, argh, well.....

Sorta.

In here are words like moron, son of a bitch and others to describe President Bush. I find it remarkable (not really) that the censors of the Tribune Swamp will censor criticism of the newspaper and its reporters or any beliefs they do not like, yet allow posts calling the president a moron or son of a bitch. It goes to show the Tribune truly is a corrupt and dishonest operation, with corrupt people running it and working it.

The Freakin Loons from the Left haven't a clue. They say Bush lied us to a war. yet they continually disregard the action of Congress and Democrats in Congress that also brought us to war. They also disregard comments all the way to the 1990s (before Bush and Cheney) from Democrats like John Kerry, Carl Levin, Rockefeller, Feinstein, Boxer, Reed, Daschle, Clinton, Kennedy, et al who spoke of Iraq's WMDs, dangers to the world and NEED for regime change. If Bush and Cheney lied, then so did ALL those Democrats.
The reality is George W Bush has more integrety and decency in his pinky fingernail than any reporter or editor at the Tribune or any Left-wing blogger could ever muster in their entire lifetime.

"Because he's the hero the U.S. deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight."

Thank you W. and may the big O have half the spine you've shown.

If he's going to take credit for "nothing happening" after 9/11, doesn't he also have to take the blame for the worst terrorist attack in the nation's history. Isn't that honest reasoning? Does everyone forget the 8/6/01 presidential briefing, "Bin Laden determined to strike in U.S."

I don't expect apologies or admissions from the petulant boy-king, but can't we at least traffic in logic?

The media + congress (Ds + Rs) have capitulated to every whim of this national embarassment for the last 7 years. I guess i'm the idiot for expecting something different.

After September 11th, President Bush vowed that he would do everything in his power to keep americans safe from further terrorist attacks. He did just that! How many presidents have actually done what they promised?
No other president in the history of our country has had to deal with as much adversity as President Bush has. Throughout these difficult times I believe that he has shown courage and integrity by standing by the tough decisions he has had to make.
Where is the accountability for the guy who was in office for the eight years prior to President Bush? Certainly he should be shouldering at least some of the blame. No, he is out there making millions selling books and lecturing to the world. How soon we forget about things like sexual relations with interns, lying about smoking marijuana, and impeachment.
What is truly disconcerting to me is the current culture of our country where we look to blame someone else for our problems and are unwilling to take responsibility for our own actions. This has never been more evident to me than in some of the comments posted here.
For example, take the housing market crisis. I didn't see anyone complaining about President Bush when people were lining their pockets during the fat times, but as soon as the bottom fell out it was time to blame someone other than their own greedy selves.
Was George W. Bush a good president? Only history will give us the answer to that question. All I can say is thank you President Bush for for accomplishing the most important part of your job, keeping americans safe.

Your republican buddies in congress kept you from getting impeached, now a moot point but you are finally GONE!!

GET LOST FOREVER, YOU'RE ONE OF THE WORST PRESIDENTS EVER!

The ranch in Crawford was a movie set. The farewell gig last night was the trailer for, W. Bush: I Served Myself And To Hell With America. Why didn't Bush take 10 seconds to say thank God for the miracle on the Hudson that afternoon? Or thanks to the first responders? Bush made the decision to first and always exist in his own comfort bubble. Bush be damned.

Well, your flawed memory does not remember that several attempts happened under Clinton's watch, and he CHOSE not to pursue Bin Laden.

Clinton was unsuccessful in his attempts to pursue Bin Laden. Bush chose to abandon searching for him. Clinton had from 1996 (two years before Bin Laden could be personally tied to an attack, although it was obvious he was pretty nasty beforehand) to 2001 to get Bin Laden; Bush had from 2001 to 2008. Clinton ordered strikes on Bin Laden -- unsuccessful and ultimately abandoned because of Republican outrage -- in 1998. Explain to me how Clinton's failure is somehow worse than Bush's, or how Bush's failure is any better than Clinton's. I can't imagine any response other than "Well, Bush was a Republican. That makes it better." Go ahead. Give it your best.

"W"ORST

PRESIDENT

EVER !

The Swamp gives (hopefully) one last opportunity for the loony left bloggers to skewer George Bush before he leaves office. What are you guys going to do with yourselves when he is gone? Get jobs? Move out of your parents' basements? The possibilities are endless. But you wont. As long as there are conservatives, and Diet Coke in your parents' refrigerators, the loony left will live on. You just need a new target to focus your bizarre and misdirected anger. How about Palin? You guys seem to hate her for no particular reason.

John D: you're entitled to your opinion, of course, but if he's so great, how come he's lower than a SNAKE in the polls?
a blinkin, Phil, Good riddance Bush; GREAT AND OH-SO-TRUE POSTS!!!

democrats, your minds were made up the moment that the Florida Supreme Court made a decision on the Florida re-count vote. Learn how to steal an election and you won't have this problem.

Modern day liberals have NO ABILITY to distinguish right from wrong, what's real, what's surreal. A bat has radar but you are somehow blessed with close to nothing that would allow a fair assessment of anyone's administration or accomplishments. Your name-calling skills, however, are 1st rate. That would, of course, be 1st rate in classless-ness.

Django, for someone who acts reasonably intelligent, you sure are misguided.

So, did Pres. Bush in his farewell indicate how he's doing in capturing bin Laden???

Texas Clown,
Sounds like there's a lot of inbreeding going on down there in Texas.
The 27% of American voters that are stupid (you) are not going to wise up anytime soon. To them, Bush is a hero for his forebearance (whatever that means) and for keeping America "safe" since 9/11. That's the way they see the world. They will watch Faux News and nothing else, which is enough to keep history's worst blowhards on the air.

You want me to give him credit for some accomplishments? OK

Shrub accomplishments:

-Has not lost another major American city...since New Orleans. (And why doesn't the corpo media mention he ignored pleas for more levy funding, and actually CUT funding.)

-Has not engaged us in another endless occupation, since Iraq.

-Has not destroyed another world ecomony, since right now.

-And as for Bush's "54 months of growth" before the greatest economic mess since the Great Depression, the Titanic voyage sure was a success...if you don't count the iceberg.

Mission Accomplished!

Oh Herbie, we'll be here to argue with the deranged, angry right, like you and John D , Terry, paulo and all the others who are still consumed with their hatred of Bill Clinton after 8 years. You guys are the gold standard of irrational political hatred.

I do think Bush Jr. was the worst president so far.

Let's see if he can outdo Billy Bubba in the sphere of questionable pardons the morning of Jan. 20.

Steve,
Don't confuse FDR with Truman.
FDR was mourned by the entire nation when he died.
Including soldiers still in the field.
The entire Corps of Cadets at West Point was the honor guard at the interment.
After all, 5 months earlier he'd been elected President for the 4th time.

Djangy, please enlighten us with your all-encompassing list of Shrub's accomplishments.

Classlessness? How about Cheney with the f.u. on the senate floor. How about Laura Bush spending $493,000 on a new set of gold-plated White House china last week after her husband orchestrated the greatest economic collapse this country has seen since the Great Depression. Liberals know a great deal about right and wrong, that's why we kicked your party to the curb the last two elections and will continue to do so for many more.

And you're going to take the moral high road yet tell us we should learn how to steal an election? You might want to get on the "re-branding" band wagon because your inability to recognize your own hypocrisy is exactly why you've become irrelevant.

Let's face it: When George W. Bush claims he's "kept us safe," it's kind of like the babysitter who lets the toddler wander into traffic the first hour she's on the job, then herds all the remaining kids into the basement and locks them in to compensate. So when the parents get home, she says: "See, I kept them all safe after the toddler got run over."

This has been the most incredibly destructive presidency probably in the history of our nation. Look at the results. Look at what Obama has inherited. What America has done now in the last two elections is repudiate Conservatism in its entirety. George Bush and his Republican cronies have succeeded in doing only one thing the past eight years: they have made the word "Republican" a dirty word.

There is really no point in a restatement of any of President Bush's accomplishments during his two tems. That has been done a number of times in the Swamp over the last year. democrats / Liberals hold the unswayable view that President Bush somehow caused the Terrorist attack on 9/11, created Hurricane Katrina, conspired with Cheney's able assistance to drive up oil prices for the benefit of Big Oil, wrecked the Economy single handedly, etc., etc., There would not be any special literary prose that I would have to bring any light upon your all-consuming hatred of Bush and Cheney, or in general, into the dark little corner of the universe that you occupy. Hell, we would never get past the name calling.

The speech that President Bush gave on Thursday night was only 15 minutes long. You could have listened to the speech or read it later if you really wanted to know what President Bush and the rest of us Wingnuts thought was significant about his two terms. You are in your surreal world if you think that nothing but good things, with favorable outcomes, are suddenly going to occur now, because the messiah has arrived. I wish him the best, but it's going to take more than his abstract speeches to solve everything that Bush and Cheney have tag-teamed to wreck.

For what it's worth, I watch CNN over Fox 75%-25%. Not only can I tell the difference between what is fundamentally right or fundamentally wrong, but I can also tell the difference between commentary and news. I have a slight preference for CNN even though they would not be politically aligned with my point of view.

Liberals seem to demand perfect solutions for problems before any one would even know that a problem exists. If there is a confrontation that could flare up, both sides are equally at fault but the weaker one should always be favored, deferred to, and allowed to prevail, because they have never had any real political power up to this point. Real issues are never of any importance worth resolving. What is fair would always be decided by who can make the most outrageous or most extreme accusation. No non-public institution could ever be perfect enough to serve anyone, fairly of course, except the largest government burecracy imagineable, or the UN.

By the above criteria, President Bush does not meet the high standards set by Liberals. I would not have any problem with anyone saying that. The visceral, raging, hatred that Liberals, some democrats, seem to live with however, is way beyond the sane and the rational. It is not easy for someone like me (a HIGHLY imperfect humanoid) to understand much of this. Have a nice day.

So, like most of the world, you can't really come up with a list either. Understandable, he will be remembered in history as one of, if not the worst, presidents ever.

I watched every painful minute of his farewell address and came to the same conclusion that most rational humanoids would; nothing of substance, nothing surprising, just the same tiring attempt to keep lipsticking the pig, coupled with a really annoying smirk and shifting eyes that told me he could hardly believe his own b.s. He should have taken his daddy's role and just bowed out the failure that he is.
Since you obviously can't create a list of W's accomplishments, I'll give you mine. It isn't really a list because it only includes one item, but at least it's respectable amongst his devastating failures; Aids relief to Africa. My cynical side tells me it was nothing more than his pittance to the left while destroying everything else he touched but, I would rather believe the man might actually have a heart after all.

Had a great day by the way, hope you did too.

An attack on us is much greater now than right after 9/11.

After killing 100,000 Iraques and creating two million Iraque refuges, tlhen multiply by 80 extended family, sect, and tribe memberss: We are safer than before Bush?

Griptite

Good post! I think It's hard to see someone leave the presidency so shamed," said Joan Walsh in Salon. Bush's televised goodbye was pathetic—he "sounded like a kid reciting the high points of fourth grade." Thank goodness Jan. 20 will soon be here, "because this president has damaged the nation beyond what I'm certain our next president can fix.
