Sources in Albany are telling the Associated Press that Caroline Kennedy will probably be the governor's pick to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.
Gov. David Paterson, who maintains he's still thinking about it, is likely to settle on the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, two sources close to the governor tell the AP. "They believe Carline Kennedy will be his choice,'' the AP reports, "but the governor cautions he's still looking.''
The New York Times has reported that during the traditional New Year's Day open house at the executive mansion in Albany, Paterson invoked the words of a legendary baseball umpire, Bill Klem, in noting that: "It ain't nothin' till I calls it."

Likely? Your kidding right. That deal to appoint her the Senator from New York was and has been a done deal. Just like the deal made with the Clintons ofr the Sec. of State appointment. That's exactly the way the Democrats work. Its back room politics at its best.

Govs leaning from the weight of gold. She's an unproven debutante buying her job the old fashioned way.

So Paul, do you have a secret source that knows about these back room deals?? Or do you just have a "hunch" like our pal MJ? What "deal"? What's the quid pro quo?

I am a Democrat all the way. However if Carolines name was not Kennedy I don't feel she would even be considered..

As one surfs the web one can read article after article of journalists who write in support of Ms. Kennedy as the heir apparent for the Senate seat in New York. Interestingly enough, though, the comments section under those articles are overwhelmingly against her apointment. And now one reads that a key legislator, Sheldon Silver has changed his mind from not supporting Ms. Kennedy to supporting her. Makes one wonder if Mr. Silver is only reading news articles and not the peoples comments. Or could this be a matter of the political machine reaching out to him and reminding him to be a good old boy and go-with-the-flow and support another Kennedy who undoubtedly will vote straight democratic on all things liberal? Interesting.

What difference does it really make. Caroline Kennedy is the Child of Camelot. That's not something to cast out lightly, to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous defeat. Whoever is appointed will just be a Chuckie Schumer surrogate. It's 2009, the democrats rule. Experience and qualifications are non-issues. She, at least resides in NY (I guess). Appoint her and be done with it.

Yikes! Kaye c. is right, this is obviously based solely upon the star power of her name.
.
When the time comes to actually run for the... y'know, seat... I can't imagine her, like, y'know... campaigning.

Somebody remind me why we should be upset about Blago and Burris?

Paul offers "That's exactly the way the Democrats work. "
Thanks for sharing that -.it's great that no Republican ever does backroom deals or practices partisan politics or lies or cheats or . . .
I view anyone who claims Democrats are . . " or "Republicans are . . ." as someone who likes swimming in the water of blathering ignorance.

Personally, I think it is a great choice for the people of New York State! While she has never been elected to any political post, her experience on various boards will suit her well. Let's face it--she's been in a very political family and she probably knows more about politics and how politics work than anyone posting here!

I think Caroline would be a fine Senator BUT I also think that since she has never run for office (She did do an outstanding job working for Prez-elect Obama's campaign) she should wait until re-election time and run for it then so she can prove herself on her own. In the meantime, someone who already has experience as an office holder should get the job.
The fact that the Gov Patterson is appointing someone is not out of line, it's the law and Republicans would be doing the same thing if they had won. Everything else is just the usual fake outrage from the GOP noise machine.

Funny how all these commenters are happy to take a swipe at a Kennedy--and not one of you have offered a name of someone who would be better than Caroline. You're just showing how small you are, folks. Be constructive; who should Paterson appoint if not her??

Gosh darn it...I really wanted Bill...would have been Harry's favorite new hamster...well, with all those "you know's" in her speech, guess he'll just have to settle for a "valley girl". Gotta love it...I mean these intellectuals who run our Congress really have set the bar to new heights...she'll fit right in, not miss a step. Sweet dreams.

Since Kennedy is a bazillionaire it's hard to believe that there was a "backroom deal". Bazillionaires usually can't be bought. Of course there can be exceptions, but I assume she isn't one.
.
Nevertheless, she's a poor choice if you look at the big picture. She has no political experience (like crafting legislation, cajoling or bargaining with other pols etc). That alone spells non achievement waiting to happen. Plus she sounds like a dunce. I'm sure she's not nearly as dumb as she sounds, but she doesn't present herself well at all. Couple that with the resentment to the obvious favoritism and you've got an astoundingly bad candidate when she has to run for the seat.
.
To the dumb question, if not her then who? Andrew Cuomo has about the same level of voter support as she does the last time I checked. Plus actual political experience. Plus a brand name.

Rupert,
.
Here's a list of the Congressman of New York not quite current, but close). These folks have been ELECTED by at least some of the citizens of New York unlike Caroline You Know Kennedy. I won't personally agree with the politics of most of these Congressman, but at least they have been elected.

As a side note, I would love to see Palin debate Kennedy - just for fun. Palin debated Biden dead-even, she will look like Mensa material next to Caroline.

At the moment, the New York Legislature has 32 Democrats in the State Senate and 104 Democrats in the State Assembly. Of the 29 Members New York has in the House of Representatives, 26 of them are Democrats. The current State Comptroller, also a Democrat, served for a long time in the State Legislature. The New York Secretary of State, while having no experience in the State Legislature, has a wealth of relevant experience, having served for 30 years in the both the private sector and government at a number of different levels prior to becoming SOS. Not only is she a woman, she is also Hispanic. And there is also the New York Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Bill Clinton. In addition, there are many former members of the New York Legislature, the New York Executive Branch, and many former New York members of the House of Representatives who are all Democrats with a wealth of experience.
.
A choice of any of the above to replace Hillary Clinton would pick no one’s pocket or break anyone’s leg. Patterson would do well to chose anyone of the above before he choosing someone like Caroline Kennedy who has absolutely no legislative or even government experience at all.
.
Personally, however, I wish Patterson would choose Bill Clinton to finish out Hillary’s term. Before serving as President, he served as Attorney General and then Governor of Arkansas. He has more than enough experience and know-how to do the job. If he got the Senate seat, he could continue to emulate Andrew Johnson. Johnson, if you recall, also made it into the Senate after avoiding removal from the presidency by impeachment. In addition, what better place is there than Washington D.C. for Bill Clinton to embroil himself in another scandal (from philandering) while Hillary is out globetrotting? His support system is already in place.

Doesn't James Earl Jones live in upstate--Metro New York? That man is just as distinguished--more actually--than any silver spooned Kennedy with Onasses money. I say James Earl Jones for the next senator from New York state. He would bring the world with him. The Kennedy girl is too secretive--would be a pig in a poke as far as a senator goes. The Kennedy girl would also send the wrong message to Americans re democracy vs hierarchy.
If Kennedy makes it in--anyone Blago names should make it in. What would be the difference? The one Blago has named seems to have more political experience, and he has already been through a vetting process with a campaign and his own election. I mean, you know, the Kennedy girl doesn't seem to be the type to want to, you know, do all the work and divulge, you know, a lot of information about herself.
