The Swamp

by Frank James

Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif) is on the House floor and has given an early readout of President Barack Obama's private meeting with House Republicans as he attempts to get their support for his $825 billion economic stimulus plan..

According to Dreier, Obama told the lawmakers they should "focus on the merits and not on politics," according to the California Republican.

Dreier left the meeting with Obama early so he could participate on the House floor to debate the rules under which the stimulus bill will be debated and voted on. And he used Obama's words as a response to his Democratic colleague, Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts who had just blamed the Bush Administration for much of the current economic woes.

McGovern, for his part, responded to Dreier by saying that he was "all for bipartisanship" then cited a Politico.com story that reported that Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), the House Minority Leader, told House Republicans to vote against the stimulus bill even before Obama showed up on Capitol Hill today.

Sounds like the chances of lawmakers heeding Obama's words to forgo politics are slim to none.

Note to Republican whiners and "very serious" concern trolls who are just now taking issue with:
spending, the economy, detainees that we haven’t been able to get enough evidence in seven years to charge with a crime or whatever other whiny crap that was in large part caused by the very same Republican policies that you cheered for, pushed for or voted for:

Your way failed. Big time. Like "F-" failed. Of epic proportions. The tax cuts for the rich failed. The neverending sinkhole of money for Iraq failed. Torture failed. Indefinite detention of "enemy combatants" failed – even shot down by a Supreme Court where 7 of the 9 Justices were Republican appointees. Big money handouts to the oil companies failed. Big money handouts to the financial institutions failed. Deregulation failed. Ignoring the infrastructure failed (bridge in Minnesota or Hurricane Katrina, anyone).

And because of it, you lost. Badly. Twice in a row.

I think the term is "elections have consequence". You remember that phrase, right?

So guess what? You don’t get to call the shots. You don’t get to suddenly decry spending – when it is going to infrastructure, energy policies and the middle class. You don’t get to perpetuate the approval of torture. You don’t get to bury evidence, to allow subpoenas to be ignored, or to dictate who gets tax cuts. And you don’t get to tell the Attorney General how to run the Justice Department, the Secretary of State how to run the State Department and most certainly the President how to set this country’s policy.

No politics? Holly molly...did you guys even read any of the posts on the Mad magazine thread? Did that thread have a direct link to the 3rd grade or what. I've never seen an outpouring of childish malarky in my life. No wonder the GOP is in the state it is. There is nobody with a lick of sense it seems. Guess one must fire with fire.....you lost Na na na na na!

Teresa,
.
Be glad that Republicans and conservatives have never taken as rabid a stance as you have just expressed. If “elections have consequences” in the manner you suggest, then we would never have heard from the Democratic Party again after Carter lost to Reagan in 1980. That’s a fact.
.
What the election defeat means is that Republicans and conservatives don’t have a majority vote. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a say. We still have the First Amendment right to speak our mind. The election didn’t silence us. Nor did it take away our constitutional right to vote. We still get to vote on those who do have a say. Nor did it take away our right to hold or run for office. We still have representatives in both houses of Congress - who do have quite a say in what goes on. Hence, conservatives can still determine the outcome of many issues of importance in a close vote. The Senate is not yet filibuster-proof either. I might also remind you that the Supreme Court is still largely populated by those who are not warmly receptive to many of the pseudo-liberal, pseudo-left wing ideas gaining in currency today.
.
Furthermore, if you think that grass-roots conservatives are only “just now taking issue” with government excesses, you are wrong. Republicans have been dissatisfied with Republican politicians too. I would consider this grass-roots dissatisfaction as a significant reason for Republican defeats in the last two elections. The people want government to do the right thing IN SPITE OF what one party or the other espouses as its ideology. Republicans under Bush, and the neo-cons in particular, haven’t been the bearers of conservative ideals for some time. If you want to know why, go read Ron Paul’s speech called “Neo-Conned.” You can find it on the web in a number of places.
.
Whatever you do, don’t think that the American People are singularly enamored with the entire DNC platform. They will approve whatever they like from it, tolerate some of it, and rebel against the rest. Whatever happens, that platform is now in the crucible. It hasn’t been tested. Surely government will do many things better than were done under Bush. That’s easy. Yet, when addressing the tough issues, the Democrat’s way forward is still quite untested. We will see if they have better ideas. We can only hope against hope that they have constitutional ones.

Here Here! Get rid of the "PORK", plain and simple. Its been proven time and again that you can not spend your way out of a recession. The only thing to do is to cut taxes and great jobs. This seems like the right time to look at the fair tax and to reduce the corporate taxes and maybe have some of our business return to the good old U.S.A.

Last Word Johnny,
Your conservative idea's have been tested and they've been a complete and utter failure.

And your defense of the BushCo torturers is not only pathetic it's also speeding up the demise of your party.

See ya in 2012...

J Dub,

"Be glad that Republicans and conservatives have never taken as rabid a stance as you have just expressed".

All stereotyping aside, I almost spit a mouthful of bourbon on my keyboard as I read that. Thankfully, the rest of your post takes a more rational tack.

BTW, how's that permanent Republican majority working out?

Bush said that after the 2004 election and Teresa was mocking him for it, you dimwit.

As for your Ron Paul love, he can't even get 10% of the total vote within the Republican party, which means your twisted version of reality isn't even a majority opinion in your own party.

Go ahead and have the last word Johnnyboy, I know how much that means to your inflated ego.

Teresa I think you mistake our democracy and freedom of discourse to something from Hugo's textbook on democratic principles in the utopian paradise of Venezuela.

I respond when I think its important to have a full expression of views. As for yours this time, they aren't worth the powder it takes to blow them to hell.
