President Barack Obama should think twice before making too much of the criticism of radio's Rush Limbaugh, Republican Sen. John McCain suggests.
While Limbaugh slams the Obama administration for the "pork'' of the president's economic stimulus plan - while lampooning the buy-American brand of Kobe beef served up at the White House's attempts at a bipartisan happy hour - the president has taken up the challenge in a rather pointed and personal way.
"I don't know why the president would take him on,'' McCain (R-Ariz.) said today of the Limbaugh-Obama flap that has run through the White House press briefings, Limbaugh's radio show and Limbaugh's Op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.
"You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,'' Obama told Republican congressional leaders recently - before the GOP caucus of the House aligned in a solid vote of opposition to the president's economic stimulus plan.
"Now this is the great unifier," Limbaugh replied on the air. "This is the man who's going to unify everybody and usher in a new era of bipartisanship and love... He's obviously more frightened of me than he is Mitch McConnell. He's more frightened of me, then he is of say, John Boehner, which doesn't say much about our party.''
Tackling Limbaugh by name was a mistake, McCain suggested.
"I don't know why he would do that,'' McCain said this morning on FOX and Friends. "Mr. Limbaugh is the voice of a significant portion of the conservative movement in America. He has a very wide viewing audience. He is entitled to his views. People listen very carefully to him... He's part of the political landscape and he plays a role."
But then, who wouldn't want to respond to this:
"Now, the president says that he's still willing to work with Republicans on this, that it's going to take a little longer to change Washington than he thought,'' Limbaugh said on the air this week.
"He's not going to have time. He just can't be done changing Washington in a week.
"Well, I would be willing to explain my plan to him. I am prepared to go up to the White House and have an adult beverage and some wagyu beef appetizers, which he served last night. That's American Kobe.
"I'm willing to go up there and share an adult beverage and some Wagyu beef to persuade him of the wisdom of my plan. I am prepared, ladies and gentlemen, to reach out to President Obama -- to explain the bipartisan Obama-Limbaugh plan to him, to help bring the nation together, under a true stimulus plan.''
Even if Obama and Limbaugh should back off from this engagement, Politico.com tells us that others plan to continue the conversation:
"Politico has learned that tomorrow Americans United for Change, a liberal group, will begin airing radio ads in three states Obama won -- Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nevada -- with a tough question aimed at the GOP senators there: Will you side with Obama or Rush Limbaugh?
"Every Republican member of the House chose to take Rush Limbaugh's advice," says the narrator after playing the conservative talk radio giant's declaration that he hopes Obama "fails."

Comments
"Mr. Limbaugh is the voice of a significant portion of the conservative movement in America. He has a very wide viewing audience. He is entitled to his views. People listen very carefully to him... He's part of the political landscape and he plays a role."
and in a nut shell...he's what is wrong with America. As he makes his millions off of dividing America to buy his Oxycotin, the bloated one, wishes failure for America. Then you have the most of the vain, Sean Vannity, willing to lie and decieve for his personal gain. The sheep? they follow blindly.

Without taking sides in this little feud. Mr. Limbaugh and Senator McCain are right there is just too much pork in this so called stimulus package. There should not be any pork at all. Obama should look at recent history, the Republicans payed dearly for their reckless spending.

If I'm not mistaken, the Pres. only mentioned him once, but I suppose we'll still be hearing about it a year from now--Rush will no doubt keep reminding us (well, not me, I won't be listening to him unless I really need a good laugh).

Fat A** Limbaugh loves all this free publicity. What make this idiot an expert on how to fix the economy? He and his ilk are the one's who 'F' ed it up in the first place. I am so sick of the right wing idiots and their hypocrisy. Sit down, shut up and let us fix the colossal mess you created.

Apparently, "taking on" Limbaugh means mentioning his name. The truth of the matter is, Obama made a point to the Republicans about working with him--it wasn't some silly challenge to Limbaugh. While Limbaugh brags about wanting Obama to fail, what are the Repubs going to do, stay on the sidelines and wait for it to happen? That may very well be their strategy, but if they were adults, and actually represented our interest, they would try to work with the Pres. on areas that they can agree--imagine that.
I find this whole "episode" ridiculous. The media creates a narrative and then beats it into the ground to cause scandal. A one sentence statement by the President has now become a "war of words." And now you have journalists and pundits alike asking politicos what they think about it. (though I should add that I find it ironic that McCain is taking on this "controversy" since he is the master at faux outrage--see lipstick on a pig). Give me a break.
If people want to debate the merits of the stimulus and the alternatives, please do so, but can we please stop with the faux controversy?

Well, I guess we know who would have been calling the shots if McCain won--none other than Rush! Why can't Americans think for themselves? No, idiots have to listen to Rush for their opinions on everything. As was said earlier here--Rush is one of the reasons this country is in the shape it is in. When oh when does the President of the United States have to listen, take advice, and do what a drug addicted a** says?

Wonder which Obama leg gets the "tingly" feeling listening to Rush? Sure seems fixated on him. Never fear folks, just the ole Chicago shuffle, to get the American folks from examining the real contents of the Democrat Reelection, Entrenchment and Pork Act. We're not all "ditto heads", but Rush makes economic sense on the problems in Nancy's nanny state bill. He should take his own advice and listen to good ideas. Rush is right. It is a Porkulous with the Chicago hustle added. Great democratic discourse, fighting against forming the Democratic nanny state. You lefties should be proud of Rush exercising free speech and the freedom to dissent.

Take Limbaugh's advice??? We don't have a bonehead in the oval office anymore.
Posted by: Kenneth Janowski | January 30, 2009 12:59 PM
And John McCain won how many Presidential elections?
Rush is trying to brag that Obama is afraid of him. Wrong.
Obama isn't even "taking on" Limbaugh.
No, Obama is making the GOP decide publicly whether Rush speaks for the GOP or not. It's win-win for Obama. Most of America thinks Ditto Heads are idiots. And Ditto Heads think they are superior. Except they're not.
Bring on the popcorn.

I truly hope these Palin and Limbaugh stories just keep getting legs. They are the faces of the party that got wiped off the map the last two election cycles. The GOP is presently trying to re-brand itself from these moronic clowns. Please keep their mics on.

Republicans are so shell-shocked by the electorate and out of touch that they now follow the orders of, and seek approval from, a radio entertainer. Good luck with that strategy.

Its people like Tim who really scare me -- the ignorant rant and carry on all thruogh these posts about how conservatives caused the financial problems-- let me ask every one -- would a conservative be more likely to lend money to people that cannot pay it back or a liberal-- answer honestly now and you will find the genesis of the meltdown--
Posted by: chuxway | January 30, 2009 1:27 PM
It's good to see the Republicans standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with this unpatriotic american who would rather see Americans suffer than have policies he disagrees with succeed. This shows the true nature of the Republican Party, angry, partisan, hopeless, the party of failure, wishing only for more failure.
Posted by: Kendle | January 30, 2009 1:36 PM
As the voice of the Republican party, Limbaugh helped drive the GOP into the political toilet. Democrats should hope he never leaves the radio airways.
Posted by: Tom in Alabama | January 30, 2009 1:37 PM
Every time Obama attacks Limbaugh that's another minute that he's not attacking a republican in congress or a governorship or running for elected office as a republican. Great job, Rush.

Rush is not a conservative. He is a partisan Republican commentator.

Let check Rushs' wonderful patriotism......here is a man who avoided the draft due to a pionidal cyst. My wife had one in her early twentys and was up and about in less than a week. Maybe his had more complications due to proximity to his brain.
Posted by: bill r. | January 30, 2009 2:18 PM
Rush,
Obama is not going to unit 100% of America. Just 80%. And guess where you and your DittoHeads will be?
Yeah, in the 20%.
That's what you fear, Rush.
Posted by: C.Morris✈ | January 30, 2009 2:28 PM
Well, I think this shows somebody fears Limburger and it ain't Obama.
It's McCain.
He fears him so much he can't believe somebody would publicly criticize Hush.
Posted by: OldCreaky | January 30, 2009 2:35 PM
Given the fact that McCain caved in to nearly all of Bush's policies, he's not only devoid of credibility but also irrelevant.
Posted by: Diane | January 30, 2009 2:48 PM
Limbaugh's an addict who went through a recovery program. I guarantee you as part of that program he made a vow to not drink alcohol. Makes this offer very strange.
Does he want Obama to help him become an addict again?
Posted by: Thom | January 30, 2009 2:48 PM
What's telling about the 2009 GOP is that you have someone like GOPer Rep. Gingrey who makes a very realistic point about how it's easier for outsiders like Limbaugh and Hannity to be critical of Obama than someone in Congress who has to actually work with the Dems... and Gingrey has to GET ON HIS KNEE'S, APOLOGIZE TO LIMBAUGH AND KISS HIS RING for making that statement?!?!
HAHAHA!!!

Is there a closet group of liberal bankers that we don't know about? Do they wear peace medallions under their three-piece suits?
Posted by: Quippy | January 30, 2009 3:38 PM
Who knew it took RINO McCain to say the palpably obvious -- that a sitting President of the United States doesn't mention any political commentator, in any context, let alone in a punchy reference.
You can say whatever you want about Bush, but he never once mentioned any of us detractors in media by name.
A rookie mistake, Mr. Obama.
Posted by: Victoria | January 30, 2009 4:08 PM
The more the extreme right clucks and quacks the better for Obama. He throws off one word and it keeps Limp-paw's fat angry white face in the news as the face of the Republican Party. Nothing Republican Senators say or do will matter. They all come across as selling the same old hate, fear and division. America overwhelmingly rejected that in November.

Quippy,
That's another one of those crazy, illogical conservative posits that make no sense what so ever.
Musta come from Limpbaugh.
Good catch.

Limburger is exactly what is wrong with America today. I think he makes a great leader for the Whig party. His nose is so high in the air that he does not see the cliff he is leading his flock over.
Posted by: Xcellentform | January 30, 2009 10:15 PM
This is such a media created story. Come on, the President of the United States who has a very real job to do, and an Oxycontin addicted, racist-dropped-by-FOX NFL, prostitute hiring, fat overpaid untalented 4-hour filling hilljack.
There is a hilarious contradiction within the Repug constituency. The Ted Haggard Evangelicals, Mark Foley - tickle-the congressional-page and the Charlton Heston "take my gun out of my cold dead hand" crowds trying to co-exist is so fun to watch. Meet me half way......in the closet, or out of it. Denounce drug addiction and drug crimes, but pop oxycontin by the handful?
Rush Limbaugh..? Really - I'll take it. He's not an elected official, and the number of educated people who would actually take him seriously is close to equalling the number of teeth in the heads of the majority of his listeners.

Ever see the movie "It's A Wonderful Life"?
Not much doubt George Bailey was the "liberal" and Mr. Potter was the "conservative". And, funny, now that I think about, Potter kind of resembles Rush Limbaugh.
A fat, warped, invalid that has no care for his fellow man.

Obama is a brilliant political chess player. Contrary to JMcC's take, the GOP now has to decide -- Rush or Obama?
If they choose Rush, we will continue to hear clips of Rush saying asinine things and Republicans being labeled "Ditto Heads." Result? Another losing year for Republicans in 2010. The public is behind President Obama, not President Limbaugh.
Personally, I think Rush should be allowed to explain his stimulus package to Senator Al Franken. (insert s-e grin)

All I can say is GOD bless America. You can already see the changes Obama has signed into law. Very socialist ideas and this is only the beginning. You all should hear WLS radio and take attention to Rush words. He speaks the truth and all you Obama supporters we will see in 2 years how sorry you will be for having voted this man into office of the president and how he will lose our freedom.........Watch and hear and you will see.........
Posted by: Donald Laurence Wolverton | January 31, 2009 5:02 PM
Donald; Listen and comprehend, and you will be repulsed.....
I used to listen to Rush when I was a child pug for a decade or so. What did I figure out that you have not yet?
Posted by: Xcellentform | February 1, 2009 9:49 AM
First, for those who read the entire transcript, Rush was hoping Obama failed in what Rush considered a socialist policy that Rush did not believe was good for America.
Next, the reasons to vote against the stimilus bill are in the bill itself, not based on Rush not liking it. So it isn't that anyone is doing as Rush tells them, including the Democrats that voted against it, it is they are against the bill.
Now, I hope that organization doing the ad, if they are one that is supposed to be non-partisan is also doing ads against Democrats that do not like the stimilus.
