The Swamp

by Mark Silva

President Barack Obama started his first week in office with one of the highest starting job-approval ratings of any president in nearly 60 years - 68 percent approval in the Gallup Poll's tracking of his first full three days in office.

Only John F. Kennedy started out stronger, in 1961, with a job-approval rating of 72 percent in the Gallup Poll. Obama's 68 percent approval matches the starting approval-rate for another popular president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, in 1953.

The first reading on Obama's performance follows his inauguration as the 44th president on Tuesday and a series of executive orders that he signed in the past few days promising openness in government, ethical rules for his administration and the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison within a year.

Gallup has found that Americans place little priority on the question of suspected terrorists imprisoned at Guantanamo, and a high priority in the economic situation at home. Obama met with congressional leaders on Friday to start pushing for an economic stimulus plan -- and promoted that plan in a radio and video address online today, which could contribute to strong ratings heading into his second week.

It's not uncommon for a president to start out with a measure of good will.

"The low percentage of Americans disapproving of his performance is fairly typical for new presidents -- although Bill Clinton and George W. Bush both started with much higher public disapproval,'' Gallup's Lydia Saad writes.

And Gallup will be watching this president more closely than any before him - planning daily tracking of his job approval and reports on rolling three-day averages into the beginning of his term. In the past, Gallup has weighed in every two weeks.

The initial ratings of Obama's performance are based on a survey of 1,591 adults run Wednesday through Friday. They carry a possible margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Will his worshipers care if none of his promises come about? Or if the country goes further into the toilet? So far he's proven he can spend and not do simple math. And spend soe more. Does he lust after our liberities like all of his corrupt, socialist friends? Did I say he knows how to spend?

Only 68% approve? Talk about a biased poll. It's more like 132%.

Thanks Tim for putting it in perspective. I had almost forgotten how frugal Bush was during his tenure. It's great that you're willing to post stuff like that now when no one really knows how his presidency is going to turn out. I'm sure if he screws up you'll be shouting at the top of your lungs about how right you were all along. I'm also sure you'll run and hide if things get better though rather than stand up and admit your mistakes like a man.

He can't do simple math, just like "tim" can't handle simple spelling.

Go clean your handgun. Be sure to look down the barrel to check if it's loaded.

And with our new lord and savior's stimulus package cost, and the number of jobs that Barry promises that he will create, each of those jobs will cost $275,00.00.

This means that 68% of those polled are fools and idiots.

tim, i agree, obama worshippers must still be high from his inauguration. he hasn't done squat except spend and spending all the middle class' money at that.

Yes indeed supported by all of the voters in all 57 states

Tim, do you care to actually comment on what he actually does in office? The one the knew how to spend was President Bush and he also knew how to take away our liberties via the Patriot Act.

As usual, there seems to be a consistent meme going around amongst the right lunatic fringers (see above).
It goes like this:

"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!"

Tim said: "Will his worshipers care if none of his promises come about? Or if the country goes further into the toilet?"

Sorry Tim, he's already started to make good on his promises. He's done more in just hours to restore the country's morals and rule of law than I expected. Unfortunately he's got a lot of crap to clean up after the past 8 years of BushCo.

What gives me hope about Obama's presidency is that he isn't a completely cynical power-hungry do whatever it takes to make it to the top eat a plateful of babies if it will advance your power sociopath who has us all completely fooled, like Reagan and Bush and Training Day all rolled into one. Obama has based his power on the people, his constituency isn't made up of the heads of corporations, it's made up of thinking Americans in very large numbers who became attracted to him because of his straightforward common sense approaches to all the BushCo craziness.

The only way Obama's going to consolidate power for himself and advance his own cause is to make that constituency, those millions of Americans who campaigned for him and contributed to his campaign, happy.

The one thing I do disagree with Prez Obama about is his willingness to reach out to the radical rightwing nuts who will do nothing but bite off his hand. I guess he's going to have to learn the hard way that the knuckle draggers on the right don't have anything positive to add to the conversation, if they did they wouldn't have been blown out in two straight landslide elections.

The average Rethuglican doesn't give a damn about the welfare of America, they're all about gaining power and being in power, period....and they still don't get it that that is exactly why they are no longer in power. I say screw'em, let them waste away into obscurity where they belong.

The interesting thing is that only 52% of people voted for Obama, yet 68% approve of what he's done so far. Clearly there's an extra 16% in there who DIDN'T worship him, yet are still willing to believe he can do a good job running the country.

Tim, if Obama fans are worshipers then what are Bush fans? Imperialists?? If the country goes further into the toilet we have only Bush and you to blame. As we all know nothing gets better overnight and the continuation of Bush's failed policies will trickle out eventually. And if anyone went after our liberties it was Bush and Cheney and the likes of you we have to thank for that.
And your tired old ''Socilaits'' propaganda tactics are so last year! I suppose you wont collect on your Social Security when you retire because of your moral judgements being so against such a Socialist program is that right?

Yeah, yeah, I hope he fails so we don't have a sucessful President so that we would have 12 years of failed administrations. The country could really use that. The good thing is I'll look so smart at the water cooler. As you can tell, I'm a Republican.

Does he lust after our liberities like all of his corrupt, socialist friends? Did I say he knows how to spend?

More propaganda from the rightwing goon squad. Big surprise...not.

BushCo commitited war crimes and tortured in our name and they also added a record $5 trillion to our deficit (more than any administartion ever has, even Ronny Rayguns)...and at the end of BushCo's reign of fear and smear we now have a grand total deficit of $10 trillion.

Heckuva Job, Repuglicans!

This may be a good sign, maybe this "Star Struct" society can now focus on the Man's actions instead of his speeches. As he performs more miracles--such as the appointment of a "Tax Dodger" as The Money Man, and a former defence lobbyist to the defence dept., hopefully people will open their eyes enough to question Obama.

Congrats, you watched a campaign ad. I guarantee your view of socialism is as enlightened as Joe the Plumber (not Joe & not a Plumber)

I am still 'no opinion'.
It's too soon to tell anything.
I don't like some of his appointments, but we will see.

Poor Tim may lose his freedom to;

1. have no health care,
2. have a filthy environment,
3. have a crumbling infrastructure,
4. be 'not tortured',
5. be listened to without a warrant
6. not have a lawyer
7. not form a union
8. transfer his wealth to the Wall Street oligarchy
9. not have birth control
10. not be able to read what he wants to without the 'watchers' watching.

A job approval survey when he's not been in office for even a WEEK??

This is absurd... and totally meaningless.

It's been one week for pete's sake.

The anti-Bush sentiment that is as rampant as the lack of confidence in our economy will sustain his administration for 9~12 months.

This latest "poll" only tells me one thing. The pollsters are busy trying to find something to do and sell.

Lets wait a year and then see how well his adminstration is doing.

He's doing a great job. We should be out of this little recession by next week I'd say.

Wow...less than one week in office and he's already gone back on his word. He repeatedly said his administration had no room for lobbyists. There would be no lobbyists. First week in, he's hired two! Sad.....sad...sad. Everyone complained about that being in the case in the previous administration(s) and we all really believed things were going to change.

This means that, not only was Obama's election statistically underwhelming, his initial approval rating is average as well – even with the MSM adulation. He's just another politician. A 68% in any class amounts to a D+ grade, at best. He is no more sublime than any other president we’ve ever had.

So when you hear someone overstating Obama’s victory margin and approval rating as a means for arguing in support of a liberal mandate, see it as the manipulative tactic it is. They merely want you to think that everyone agrees with them and that there must be something wrong with you if you’re not in the Obama fan club. The nearly 60 million people who voted for John McCain constitute the largest dissenting voter population in American history. Do not mistake Obama’s statistically run of the mill victory and approval rating as a mandate for his liberal agenda.

To see that statistics and facts behind my arguments:

END THE FISA SPYING ON AMERICAN CITIZENS! Write in for your record created by the gang who didn't shoot straight!
Obama says government is to NOT hide stuff from us just because it CAN....

Tim, if anyone lusted after our liberties, it was Dubya and Dick. Warrantless wiretaps for everyone! They had thier share of corrupt friends, too. Enron's Ken Lay was Dubya's best friend. Rumsfeld was a Reagan emmissary to Saddam Hussein. Maybe if so many people hadn't succumbed to the mantra of deregulation and Reaganomics (talk about someone who knew how to spend!) as the sure-fire cure for every problem, every time--we wouldn't be in this mess. It's nice to want to believe people have the best intentions, but the people at the top of the Capitalist food chain seem pretty unsavory in recent allegations. I'll take a little government oversight and control (read "socialism") if it means avoiding the total collapse of Civilization As We Know It.

wow, that comment made by tim could not have come across anymore like a brainwashed ignorant person.

next time keep your mouth shut while you attempt to be opinionated.

Dear Tim:
I'll bet you consider yourself lucky when all of the ultra wingnut pundits heads exploded simultaneously when Obama was sworn in. Sorry, chump, you had your chance. In eight years you had the chance to screw everything up, and you succeeded. So, dude, really, YOU do the math. Go back and watch FoxNews because obviously you're having a difficult time dealing with the real world. Wahhhhhhhhhh! Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Are you kidding me? A job approval rating after one week? Let's give the Messiah a little longer to work all of his miracles before we give him a 68% approval rating. Unbelievable how you bleeding heart liberals only see what you want to see.

I'm surprised that "tim" just didn't blame it all on the Clintons too. I'm sure he just forgot. Nice going, toolbox!

No but people who can't spell really irritate us.

Let me assure you that if his father had been a white dude from Topeka, his approval rating would be 91%.

Well, whoppie do! 3 days in office and his supporters think he is the greatest thing since sliced bread????? He has put our country's security at risk and is spending "our" money like a fool! I hope some in congress has guts enough to stand up to him!

Being someone who voted for Obama (read: Informed electorate, not a knee-jerk reactionary afraid of change), I agree that doing this kind of poll less than a week after he's taken the job is ludicrous. It just means people liked the Inauguration and the vibe it's created. Give it time. My guess is when the same poll is done in a month and his approval rating is still high, the fear-mongering right who are afraid of what this will mean at the next mid-term elections will be scrambling to find a reason to say Obama's plan will not work. Just listen to Rush and his uneducated rant about wanting Obama to fail and it proves my point. The sad truth is that getting this country back on track (as in, undoing what Bush let happen on his watch) is going to cost money. But not as much as what Bush spent while in office. Seriously. If you want this country to succeed you have to stop looking for reasons it won't and get behind a plan. In this case, accept that Obama won the election, that most people want him in office and get on board with his plan to get things going in this country. If you think McCain would do any better, you need to stop imagining he would have done anything OTHER than continue the Bush plan. If you don't get on board, don't be surprised when things DON'T go well, because you'll be part of the reason they don't.

Can someone tell me how he can have a job approval rating when he hasn't done anything yet? What a joke.

This article is a wonderful illustration of why the Trib, and most other liberal rags, are going the way of the dinosaur.

You moron! And to those of you who comically ate it up : you morons!

Tim, you're like the turd in the pool.

This must be where the Republican's kindergarten is kept, with all these babies whining and crying. I can't believe it. They can't believe that President Obama hasn't undone, most of the mistakes and blunders of the past, two, Republican administrations. Give him time, boys and girls, he will not only undo the Bush Blunders, he will have you thinking and loving this country, more than you did, before he gained the Office of the President. What he will do, that some of us may not like, nor appreciate, is to ask us to accept the responsibilities of citizenship, a little more seriously, than we have in the past. I know that will be difficult for a lot of Republicans, and some Democrats, but that is a must, if we, as a nation, are to avoid a complete meltdown of our economy. Let us see that good, old American spirit, once again and show the world, that we really didn't lose our mind, we just, temporarily, lost our way. With President Obama's election, we have taken the first step towards a more sane, safer and a sounder nation !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Well this is funny: Obamaites conducting a poll about how well their savior is doing by asking his minions what they think only one week after his so-called inauguration!

He is a false prophet. He is not what he pretends to be. He is The Destroyer. He will destroy us with his lies which will lead to the country being torn apart. He is in office illegally. We must fight him with our last breath. May God save us from the evil Obamite Army of Death!

The detainees at Gitmo
were included in the poll

Forgive Tim....for he knows not what he types.

If Obama does nothing more then encourage and stimulate...then he will remain in the 60+ approval rating.

What ever he has done is mostly symbolic - Issuing an Executive order to close Gitmo is very different than actually closing it - but this idea that there are greater ethics in this administration is absurd - we are going to have a treasurer secretary who failed to file his taxes properly for four years - a deputy at the pentagon who was a lobbyist for Raytheon - a HHS secretary who has made millions lobbying on behalf of the healthcare industry interest - and of course, a President who opted out of the public financing system that put controls on the amount of money influencing our politics. Even if I am the only one (and I am not) I don't approve of this massive corporate welfare program that benefits the big campaign contributors of this president and this congress, while the American worker and taxpayer is getting pink slips and the shaft - and the largest transfer of debt to the next generation because these hacks refuse to make hard choices. I didn't vote for him - and I don't approve of the job he has done in the past three days, and have little hope anything will improve in the many years ahead.

Since the election on Nov. 4, the S&P 500 index is down 17%. In spite of the Gallup poll, the stock market and investors do not have confidence in the new president. The stock market anticipates economic event about 6-9 months in the future and doesn't like what it sees

The obama haters are sad deluded people. They deserve our sympathy. They are pathetic. they are so sure that disaster awaits when they have no evidence to back it up. Then they try to compare liberal treatment of bush to their treatment of Obama. Number one, lots of conservatives did not appreciate the job Bush did, based on vote totals. two, we actually saw Bush in action for eight years, while Obama has been in the job less than a week.

I believe it is a little premature to determine how good of a job the president is doing in three days. Lets wait and see what he has done in six months.

Wow, it took all of five days to come out with a poll. Just one question, exactly on what criteria was to 68 percent approval rate based on? Meaningless and idiotic polling yet again.

umm...can i just say he's only been in office for FIVE days?

If he gets our $20 Billion back from Bank of America and jails John Thain- next week- I might give him a thumbs up.

Now that would be doing something.

Are these "liberal rags" or conservative crying towels? Dinosaur? Like the republican party? Now most similar to a can of Alpo, the right can't understand that the very reason they are on the outside looking in is their rabid approach to politics. Reality does bite.........to them.

ejhicky......the pugs here still have their heads spinning and puking at the same time. Meanwhile, they continue to type their posts that do not make a bit of sense. The stock market is completely reactionary you propogandist. Every smart individual knows that the stock market lags behind main street by at least one quarter. Keep tossing us softballs though, with your twisted logic.

Will his worshipers care if none of his promises come about?
.
Yes. Although I'd expect that not ALL his promises come to fruition and I WON'T be too upset about that. Depends on what he's able to do and what he can't -- also WHY.
.
Or if the country goes further into the toilet?
.
Absolutely! I'm here to tell you that if Obama fails in his Presidency to the extent that Bush failed in HIS, if he shows the same signs of incompetence, arrogance, corruption and intrusion on the Constitution as Bush did, I'll be WAY at the head of the line of those howling for his head. Now -- if he SUCCEEDS, will you be around saying he did a good job?
.
So far he's proven he can spend and not do simple math. And spend soe more. Does he lust after our liberities like all of his corrupt, socialist friends?
.
You mean the corrupt, Socialist George W. Bush? He seems to have been the one doing most of the spending recently, and the one most lustful to take away liberties ....
.
Did I say he knows how to spend?
.
Yes, you did.

The stock market is a discounting mechanism. It reflects future events ahead of time, as the 40%- 50% decline over the last year or so reflects. In other words, the decline in the market from its high in Oct. 2007 tto its lows in 2008, reflected anticipation of the current rising unemployment figures and banking problems. The recent decline in the market from Nov. 4 2008 to the present reflects the fear of many investors that Obama economic plans will not be successful in improving economic conditions. Contrary to your statement most knowledgeable economists recognize that the stock markets anticipate future events while taking into account, past events.
