How will we be able to track how many of his promises are kept by President-elect Barack Obama?
PolitiFact.com and the St. Petersburg Times think they have an answer. They've produced a tracker for around 500 of Obama's promises. They call it the Obamameter.
Since he hasn't even been sworn in yet, there obviously hasn't been the opportunity to fulfill many of his promises. But he has made good on two according to the Obamameter. He has a Republican in his cabinet, fulfilling a pledge he made on "60 Minutes" right after the election and he
They're also crediting him with a capital-gains tax law change that was actually signed into law by President Bush. But since Obama promised it during the campaign, they're adding it to his tally.

Is this a little over the top? I think so. This only perpetuates the false notion that everything promised in the campaign must be delivered on. Politicians don't deserve much, but they do need to get the benefit of the doubt on campaign trail nuance.

What Frank James doesn't tell you--the St. Petersburg Times, which supposedly is going to check the promises made by Democrat Barack Obama, is a newspaper that endorsed Democrat John Kerry in 2004 and Democrat Barack Obama in 2008.
In other words, the Democrats at the Times will judge Democrat Obama, with the approval of the Democrats at the Swamp.
Leni Riefenstahl would be proud.

If only the corporate media had fact checked W. and Cheney from day 1, maybe we wouldn't be in Iraq etc right now....
Give it a rest, Prez-elect Obama hasn't even taken office yet.

Matt has a good point. But the St. Pete Times is a good paper and not a right wing rag; if we can be rational and reasonable (not sure we can) it's a fair tool. Obviously, circumstances change. Bush didn't campaign on war and hurricane preparedness.

Matt, I wish the great Obama success in his new position, but if you run an 18 month+ campaign, constantly contrasting yourself against the current president by making a bunch of promises on issues that your own support base and the vacuous middle doesn't really seem to understand the complexity of, then hell yes, someone may hold you accountable.
I have the list.
- Capture bin Laden
- Shut down Guantanamo
- End the war in Iraq, 6 months, 6 weeks, 6 days, 6 hours, 6 minutes, 6 seconds, u decide
- No torture / No interrogation for terrorists, u decide
- Free College / Cheap College, u decide
- Meet, Greet Despotic World Leaders anytime any place. This one would be my favorite
- Tax Cuts for 95% of Americans / for 95% of Taxpayers, u decide
- Repeal the Bush Tax Cuts / Cut capital gains taxes, u decide
- Run American Foreign Policy through the UN, another favorite of mine
- A Raise for the Connecticut Guy and Health Care for everyone else
- Fixing Global Warming. Looks like those promises may already be working in the Windy City and similar northern locales. That's just Magic.
My bad for taking someone at their word, probably a Tx thing. Let us Despair Not though. Most democrats are never going to know the difference.

Frank,
One of the sentences here isn't finished...just curious what it was going to say.
"a pledge he made on "60 Minutes" right after the election and he"

Matt, no this is not over the top. The fact remains is that this man got elected because of what he promised; because his supporters didn't like what the Repubs had to offer, even though I am happy to see he seems to be backing away and may not be the puppet Soros and far-left thought they were getting when they bought - oops - got him elected. What if you hired someone to market a product for you and he did not follow through on any representation of what he could do? How would you feel? Or you thought you were buying a German Shep puppy but got a poodle? When the rich far-left realize that they are not getting what they bought, or the masses realize he is not going to stick it to the rich, their support of him will drop fast and the money will dry up - until he gets close to the second term and starts making false promises again just to get their money. And don't say he had to change because of conditions. The economy was tanking when he was running. He said he was the one who knew how to fix it. I think people need to see how he played them to get what he wanted. He's not the Messiah everyone acts like he is. I am just so sick of it all, and if sites like this can show it, then I am all for them.

If Prez-elect Obama is able to clean up even a 1/4 of the mess that the BushCo mis-administration has made, he will be considered a success..period, end of story.

Oh, yeah, I remember those meters. The way I remember it, every newspaper in the country had a BUSHmeter, and King George I passed all of them with flying colors.
You guys must remember. It was right after Bush showed his birth certificate to the press, just like every president has since the 1700s. and he called himself George WALKER Bush when he was inaugurated.

I don't expect apologies or admissions from the petulant Boy-King Bush, but can't we at least traffic in logic?
The corporate media have capitulated to W.'s every whim of this national embarassment for the last 8 years. And now that a Dem is Prez we're going to see them return to their job of doing the bidding for their radical right overlords at the RNC, as they did with Bill Clinton.
Any sort of poll bounce W. is getting in these last few weeks is nothing more than a "thank god he's leaving" bounce.

You'd have to have the intellect of Isaac Newton to "track" "promises" in a political and economic environment that resembles the re-entry envelope of the Columbia and the Challenger.
Israel, just one example, chose to invade Gaza, before, and perhaps because of, the impending inauguration.
How does that event, for example, affect the "tracking" project?

CDR and the Democrats
The withdrawal of Bill Richardson recently made the headlines. In his case CDR gave money to Si SE Puede, a PAC formed to help pay Richardson's expenses at the 2004 Democratic Convention. In exchange its argued that CDR received favorable treatment in regards to bids to do business for GRIP (Govenor Richardson's Investment program) , bid rigging in short.
Another aspect of pay for play, and one more likely to land a politician in jail is CDR's tactic of finding friends, fundraisers and associates of elected Democrats, and hiring them as "Consultants". In New Mexico it was Richardson friend Mike Stratton who was hired by CDR. On a side note the Director of Si Se Puede Fred Duval was hired by UBS ,a Swiss bank, as a consultant. UBS was also one of several banks that ended up receiving a cut of the GRIP pie. The collusion of CDR, elected Democrat, and consultants that occurred in New Mexico is similar to other CDR linked scandals. In Philadelphia it was Ron White (now deceased) who received money and super bowl tickets from the company and was hired as a consultant. He was also an associate and fundraiser for Philly Mayor Sharpe. In Pennsylvania as a whole it was Alan Kessler who was the chief lobbyist for CDR and a top fundraiser for Ed Rendell. The most egregious example would be Mayor Larry Langford of Birmingham Alabama, who is accused in a 101 count indictment of using his friend William Blount and lobbyist Albert LaPierre to funnel money, jewelry, cloths, and watches into his hands in exchange for government favors while he was President of the Jefferson County Commission. Jefferson County, which includes Birmingham is on the precipice of the greatest municipal bankruptcy in history.

Totally have to agree with what a few others have said here! If we/certain people are going to "track the progress" of our current president, Obama, and if we're going to be fair about it - then why wasn't this rule/game put in place while Bush was in office? Why didn't we hold Bush up to the very same standard(s) we're/they're holding Obama up to now? Why didn't we/they track *Bush's* progress in the White House? (Oh, yeah, right - because he had none!)
What a load of crud!
