They were marching in the streets of New York today to protest the Post cartoon depicting a rogue chimpanzee as author of the nation's economic stimulus.
"End racism now,'' chanted demonstrators led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, who waged his own campaign for president and doesn't take kindly to the apparent depiction of the first African-American commander-in-chief as a chimp.
"I guess they thought we were chimpanzees,'' Sharpton said. "They will find out we are lions.''
The New York Post is defending the cartoon - which pictures a police officer standing over a slain, roque ape in the aftermath of a chimp's mauling-attack in Connecticut that cost a woman her face - saying, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.'' The paper calls it a parody of Washington politics.
But Sharpton views it as an exploitation of a potent image in the pantheon of racist portrayals of blacks. He promises to meet with Post advertisers to encourage them to pull their ads, while asking New Yorkers to boycott the paper.
"You would have to be in a time warp or in a whole other world not to know what that means," demonstrator Charles Ashley, 25, a model, says of the cartoon.
Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan insists that the cartoon "broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy."

Usually I disagree with Al Sharpton but this time he's right.
I hope they run the racist GOPer Murdoch Post out of business.

Reason #5367 of why the 2009 Rethuglican party is such a small minority:
Only in the hollow brains of today's Rethuglican minority party minions (Jeffy), would protesting about a chimp cartoon be considered "race baiting".

What happen to " I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?
.
It seems Sharpton wants to run these voices out of business.
.
Reminds me of the Muslim cartoons about 3 years ago that portrayed Muhhamed in a way that would disgrace Islam and all the death threats.
.
Sharpton and his ilk haven't gone that far, but there is still time

Nobody is going to arrest the cartoonist Terry. His 1st amendment right is unabridged.
But the NY Post is apologizing... I wonder why (it's an offensive cartoon!).

Gordo,
.
Never said anything about arresting the cartoonist - quit buildin strawmen.
.
My first thought on the cartoon was that the chimp reprsented Pelosi, Reid, & Congress. I thought PETA should have stepped becuase that comparison was insulting to the chimp.

the cartoon in the post is both mean spirted and racist. When you depict a dead chimpanzee, shot by 2 white cops, who then quip about finding someone to write the next economic stimulus bill, when President Obama is the face of that bill, thats not .political satire, thats racism.

Would it make you feel better if the Chimp represented a female Democratic member of Congress like Nancy Pelosi, Terri?
Terri, you represent the very fringe element of the right-wing lunitic fringe. Why don't you quit slobbering on your keyboard and go out and do something positive with your family? Don't you Wingnuts claim to be the "family values party"?...oh wait a minute, that's for everyone else....my bad...nevermind.

HEY HEY WE'RE THE NY POST MONKEES
(The Monkeys)
Williambanzai7
Here we come, walkin'
Down the street.
We're bigots writing jokes on
Ev'ry one we meet.
Hey, hey, we're the NY Post Monkees
And people say we monkey the news around.
And we're too busy slinging excrement
As we put everybody down.
We write wherever we want to,
say whatever we like to say
No time to think--we are thoughtless,
There's always someone new to pick on today.
Hey, hey, we're the NY Post Monkees
And people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy slinging excrement
As we put everybody down.
Don't want to be friendly,
Come and watch us sling
Degenerate news masturbation,
We've got nothing of value to sing.
Any time, Or anywhere,
Just look over your shoulder
Guess who'll be defecating there
Hey, hey, we're the NY Post Monkees
And people say we monkey the news around.
But we're too busy slinging excrement
As we put everybody down.

Everyone has a right to their opinion about our government etc.., that's one reason we are the United States of America, FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Besides the obvious, it was funny and sorry but if the shoe fits.....you know the rest!
Posted by: Beth | February 20, 2009 2:10 AM
Oh and let's view this as the President laying there instead of a black man, after all the President is half black, half white!
Don't blame me, I voted for McCain!
If the chimpanzee fits, wear it!

There isn't a cartoon out there that won't offend someone. Bush was comparing to a chimp numerous times.
All Americans must cease from drawing any monkeys or chimps because you are automatically racist, and any monkey or chimp is automatically Obama. Awesome.
The movie King Kong must have really upset you then.

I don't understand the BIG TO DO about that cartoon. It would have been more to the point if it was a female chimp to represent Nancy Pelosi from the right-wing lunitic party who authored the stimulus package.
Posted by: Melchr | February 20, 2009 8:59 AM
I think the comment by AN is completely true. If this was drawn to represent George W. Bush this cartoon would be praised.
We elected a black-skinned, American president. We are not a racist nation.
Posted by: Lincoln | February 20, 2009 10:32 AM
Using one current event to mock another current event does not equal racism. There will never be racial harmony in America until people like Al Sharpton stop profiting off of promotion of misunderstanding and hate between people.

Typical, hollow-minded, demorat thinking. How many times did these same tasteless windbags (including Bubba), call President Bush DIRECTLY "chimpy?" and it was a-okay?
Now, because an editorial cartoonist uses an image to compare the entire democratic congress and Obama to an out of control chimp then it's racist. And these are the same people who say the "race card" doesn't exist.
Posted by: Jeff | February 20, 2009 11:53 AM
"Chimp" is the kindest of words I've used to describe Bush.
Hollow minded is someone who doesn't see the difference between comparing Bush to a chimp and comparing Obama to one.

I know you've embarrassed and failed us immensely, but now you are a racist as well?
Posted by: School Of Media Management | February 20, 2009 12:27 PM
We elected a Bi-ethnic President. He happens to be half-black. For anyone who has any knowledge of African Americans and their history who do not find the "cartoon" in the NY Post referenced in this discussion as anything other than racist, offensive, and disrespectful of the highest office in America, I implore you to please examine your conscience.
I am persuaded that there are many who are despising of this president because he seeks to bring to light the dirty deeds of many of those who have been in power. They have been able to operate based on greed, self-importance, and a lack of integrity, all with impunity and immunity while oppressing and disenfranchising those (black, white. etc.) without real access to power.
I wonder if the criticism is as much about not wanting a Commander in Chief who has integrity as much as it is about the color of his skin. Those who are accustomed to operating in the dark, cutting deals in back rooms, etc... are seeing much of that being threatened by a President who has repeatedly announced that he will call people to account as he holds himself accountable to the American people. Anyone with integrity, an agenda that extends beyond themselves, their "power, prestige, and political aspirations" would welcome transparency in their dealings, choices and behaviors. Anyone of this caliber would do all they could to support this presidency.
We should applaud and welcome transparency and accountability in government, after all, this nation was founded on the concept of “by the people, of the people, and for the people”. Somehow, this seems to have been lost somewhere along the way while America was sleeping. It is time to wake up America!. Only those who operate in the dark are desperately opposed to light. If those who function as leaders in OUR government had made it a practice, heretofore, of doing this we might not be in the mess we are in today as nation.

The corrected caption should have read "Now that Mohammed Obama is dead, they will have to get someone else to write the stimulus giveaway".. If there was anyone else not officially offended, that should take care of that problem.

The dead chimp cartoon did not strike me as it reflected Obama as I do not
consider blacks chimpanzees and never heard the reference. Once told it was meant to be Obama, the cartoon took on a new meaning that I
did find offensive. But, the way some
protested it just educated me to the underlying meaning, for some people but I don't think all people knew what it meant..
