Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, having tea with the empress of Japan today, also was having a somewhat more substantive meeting with the nation's foreign minister.
As the American president signs a $787-billion stimulus back home, the travelling secretary was calling on Japan to boost its own economic stimulus spending.
And Clinton was downplaying the impact of the resignation of the Japanese finance minister, who stepped aside after an embarrassing public appearance.
"The loss of the finance minister doesn't in any way undermine what I know to be the commitment to address the very serious economic contraction,'' Clinton said of Japan in this interview aired on CBS News Early Show.
