Happy birthday, Abe Lincoln.

Happy birthday, Charles Darwin.

Today is not only the 200th anniversary of the birth of the American president who saved the union, but also the 200th anniversary of the birth of the British naturalist who established evolution as the dominant scientific explanation of life on the planet.

So President Barack Obama is traveling to Springfield, Ill., today, for a celebration of Lincoln. But who's going to the Galapagos Islands?

Sarah Palin, "daughter of a science teacher,'' might consider making that journey, as part of a necessary reconstruction of the popular perception created in the presidential campaign that perhaps the Republican governor of Alaska believes that dinosaurs and her great-great-great-grandparents trod the earth at the same time.

Now, Palin already has attempted to refute the myths about her: Did she only want to teach creationism in school and not evolution? "No,'' she told FOX News last year. "In fact, growing up in a school teacher's house with a science teacher as a dad, you know, I have great respect for science being taught in our science classes and evolution to be taught in our science classes.''

She had, however, told the Anchorage Daily News that schools should not fear teaching creationism alongside evolution: "Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information.... Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as a daughter of a science teacher."

The full rehabilitation of Palin's image on the question of evolution shouldn't take nearly as long as Darwin's five-year journey aboard HMS Beagle.

But 2012 might be a useful goal.

Not only is today Darwin's birthday, but this year will mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. He was 51 at its publication. He also lived somewhat longer than Lincoln - Darwin died on April 19, 1882, the photo here taken shortly before he passed away.

And yesterday, it turns out, was Palin's 45th, for which the folks at MSNBC offered up a video tribute. Happy birthday, all:

I guess Darwin lived a wee bit longer, if he made it to 1982!! I think his clothing would be a little out of style, but then, most scientist dress a little crazy!

As for the Palin nut, any talk of teaching intelligent design needs to include Budhism, Native American beliefs, Shinto, Hindu, and about 100 more local beliefs on how the earth was formed. She of course would object to teaching such non-sense, and I would say "checkmate witch".

"...Darwin died on April 19, 1982"

Wow, 173 years? He did live a long life!

DoDo seeks DoDo.

Wow. 1982. Darwin really did live a lot longer than Lincoln.

We sure don't want a debate about anything do we? Why not teach both? When ideas are challenged, it makes people think. Maybe that is what is really behind the "evolution only" crowd, critical thinking in one area could easily spill over into other areas as well. Soon we might actually have a lively debate about "multiculturalism" and "diversity," two other subjects which have been proclaimed off limits. Censorship by the free speech generation is widespread.

Mark, still bashing Sarah, the darling of American feminists. At least she did not attend a church led by a "racist" for 20 years and never hear anything remotely in offensive only to leave when it became a political liability. Comparing her record as a governor and 20 some days of this fiasco she looking better all the time. Chew on that statement you all tolerant lefties!

Myths? Really?

Several people who know her agreed that she told them her beliefs about humans and dinosaurs co-existing. Are you saying they are all lying? Collaborating in a scheme to make her look bad? Do you have proof of this grand conspiracy or are you simply indulging in a little myth-making of your own.

What we do know of Sarah Palin leads us to not be surprised that she might believe in young Earth creationism. She gladly participated in an exorcism in public (no, I'm not mixing her up with Bobby Jindal), she continued up through last year to support the AIP, she flew half a day after her water broke after 7.5 months of pregnancy to a remote clinic in Alaska instead of going immdeidately to a hospital in Dallas, she claimed she was vindicated in Troopergate when she clearly was found guilty of crimes that in other states would have landed her in jail. These are all facts, and they're just the start. Myths? The only myths about Sarah Palin are the ones she herself starts (like the laughable new one about how Bristol was named after ESPN's headquarters - what????). Surely Republicans can do better than someone dimmer and more arrogant and more socialist than George W Bush.

". . . as part of a necessary reconstruction of the popular perception created in the presidential campaign that perhaps . . ."

SNORT. This is why I love the press. You don't have to make sure the TRUTH about you gets out anymore -- you have to deal with all the "popular perception created" that "perhaps" this or that is the truth about you. Excuse me, but isn't that what reporters are supposed to do -- tell the truth instead of create myths that the subjects then have to work to destroy? Pardon me for being so quaint and old-fashioned, but I could have sworn that was in the job description.

Some have evolved more slowly than others. It's not your fault, Sarah. It's just the way evolution works!

Xcellent Form: Hopefully by now you have re-read the article and realized that the date is 1882, not 1982. The rest of your post is completely accurate!

Greg: Calling it a "debate" is like calling a confrontation between a tourist and a street gang a "championship prize fight." You can't "debate" two profoundly unequal ideas. ID/Creationism belongs in a comparative religions class. It's on the opposite end of the spectrum from science.

Honestly, it doesn't even belong in a legitimate religious studies class. Most practitioners of Christianity, up to and including the Pope, have no problem understanding that science is real.

ID/Creationism belongs in a "Crackpot Theories" class.

Mark, thanks for making the date correction, but please, make a post stating such so that I do not look as looney as the ones on the right. I really thought the 1982 date was VERY funny!

Today marks the day Mark Silva officially is no longer a journalist and enters the realm of complete idiocy. This trash is why the Chicago Tribune is on its death spiral.

No chewing, Bubba Porter; I'm just laughing at you.

Where's Inky and his Pandora's box?.... you teach creationism in the schools, then I guess you have to teach Buddha and other relgions as well.

Can creationism or intelligent design be scientfically tested???? That is why they should not be discussed in SCIENCE classes. People are dumb.

I don't believe in Creationism, nor do I think it should be taught in public schools because it is fundamentally religious in nature. I believe the geologic record, as well as a body of scientific study illustrates that Darwin had it right. That being the case, it's hardly fair to paint a politician as a Neaderthal if they (1) accept evolution, (2) respect that others do not, and (3) wish to promote a healthy debate of ideas. This is the essence of what Americans should aspire to. The tardy acknowledgment of Gov. Palin's true belief system will not exonerate the mainstream media's absolute abdication of their role as a fair arbiter of facts in the last election cycle. Nice try, Mr. Silva. But the media's sycophantic role has place them in lower esteem than Congress or George W. Bush.

Yes. Let's also teach that the earth is flat next to other notions of the planet in geography.

Survival of the fittest.

well if we go by Darwin we must ask the question whether his theory would survive the times when every one is after one single question http://controversial-affairs.blogspot.com/2009/02/darwin.html

Lincoln and Darwin; Both children of the Enlightenment.
BTW, modern biology and the medical sciences are based on evolution.

Nice try Dem Dems. Don't believe everything you read on the internet or that the college drop-out Matt Damon tells you. I know you are enamored by and follow the learned advice of Sean Penn, P Diddy, Madonna, Susan Sarandon, and the Dixie Chicks, but sometimes you just have to do the research. Also, when someone emails you from Nigeria claiming they want to reward you with millions of $$ for helping distribute an inheritance from a deposed former government official, BEWARE.

I'd beware of citing wikianswers just as much as I'd be wary of E mails from Nigeria.

I highly respect both Lincoln and Darwin, but I don't think you're being fair to Sarah Palin here. She believes that evolution should be taught it school, but she's not opposed to creationism being brought up as well. When schools teach evolution, religious children are made to feel that their opinion is wrong and they need to change. This is not right. I agree with Gov. Palin here--a lively discussion over both topics is good for children, not just by knowing both, but being able to express one's opinion and argue why they feel that way.

No, Flo, you're more interested in citing the objective works of a political opponent of Sarah Palin who runs a liberal website and routinely criticizes Palin for political gain (Philip Munger). Munger helped spread the lib lies after the unbearablebobness blog posted them in 8/08. http://unbearablebobness.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/08/governor-sarah-palin-quotes.html under "Fake Sarah Palin Quotes." Or perhaps you look to Matt Damon for political insight. If it wasn't for celebs, how would you libs know who to vote for???

Idiot (Obamabots?) I didn't say a word about Sarah Palin. So don't speak to me until you find a brain. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Dixie Chicks and Matt Damon are smarter than she is.

Bemused, I guess it's not meant to be; hours ago I sent a comment agreeing with you (partially). I guess they couldn't believe it; never got posted. But I tried.

You want to talk church attendance...Palin attended church where Tom Muthee from Kenya, a man who imprissioned a woman...for being a ...WITCH. This happened for more than two decades. Palin joined Moothy onstage while he prayed for her.

Muthee began his ministry with a witch hunt against a Kenyan woman he accused of causing car accidents through demonic spells, according to the Christian Science Monitor, which first reported the story in 1999. Muthee publicly declared the woman "a witch responsible for the town's ills, and order her to offer her up her soul for salvation or leave Kiambu . . . The woman fled."

Palin later said in a public speech with her annoying accent: "As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me . . . He said 'Lord make a way and let her do this next step.' And that's exactly what happened."

Yes, you wanted to elect a woman who believes in WITCHCRAFT and magic to office. Maybe she can appoint Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and Batman to offices.

Two things: 1) When even the Vatican endorses the Theory of Evolution and regards Intelligent Design as a "Cultural Phenomena" may be we should stop arguing. There are millions of years of data stacked on the side of evolution and only the word of the "Bible" on the other. (I know, I'll offend SOMEONE with that statement.) The Theory of Evolution is an observation of what happened; whereas, ID fills gaps of knowledge with "insert miracle here," and guesses at the rest. Create the world in six days--come on, what are you thinking?
2) I'll agree to teaching ID or Creation (same thing) in science class if we can teach the Theory of Evolution in Sunday School. All I'm asking for is equal time--same as the Creationists ask for.

Palin would thrust us back to dark ages in so many areas.
How CAN we take her seriously? It´s impossible.
