The U.S. Mint is unveiling a new Lincoln penny today. The makeover leaves alone the front of the coin but changes its back.
The versions being rolled out this year will have a series of images, first a log house, then Abraham Lincoln sitting on a log reading, Lincoln speaking in front of the Illinois Statehouse and, lastly, the unfinished Capitol dome as Lincoln would have seen it in his day.
The new-look penny may be just the thing to get more people picking them up when they see them on the street or around the house; that and the recession.

Should have had Abe with his arm around BHO. There are more similarities there than even the "odd Lincoln/Kennedy" coincidences.

This will surely renew the debate: Should the penny be eliminated?

Yep, just another great article about the waste of our government and society. The penny costs more to make than its value, and costs us so much more money in labor on the workforce side of things. It needed a good change for what reason again?....oh that's right, because so many people are trying to counterfit pennies in their basement.

"Should have had Abe with his arm around BHO."
That would be worth 2 cents.

There was a diner in Chicago that would always "round down", sometimes to the dollar. $4.37 = $4.00.
I wish stores would adapt the same practice. If I'm giving a trillion dollars to the banks, I don't see much value in a penny.

As a former coin and stamp collector, it's amazing how great the numismatics lobby is in getting our government to waste tax money for hobbyists. It's also one of the few hobbies where coin stores don't have to charge sales tax either.

Why the heck are we still wasting time minting pennies. It's time to do away with the penny and the dollar bill, and get back to a dollar coin. People who complain about dollar coins are the same pitiable people that couldn't handle conversion to the metric system, keeping the US behind the rest of the world.

You're kidding, right? I throw pennies away on a regular basis. They are useless and minting them is a gigantic wast of money. They can do away with the nickel and the dime, too, while they are at it.
Posted by: Bruce | February 12, 2009 3:24 PM
uhm when it costs 2 cents to make a penny, 9 cents to make a nickel and 5 cents to make a dime I would think they could stop reinventing the wheel.
It is not worth it

Pennies are cool. New pennies are even cooler. Complain about something else, grumps.
Posted by: Vic D. Brenner | February 12, 2009 3:31 PM
seems to me the penny is going up in value as the economy tanks. if everyone wants to throw them away i would take them. they do add up. I understand they cost more than they are worth but so is the huge pork barrel spending that will pass today, just like the other goverment waste of money thrown at the banks that generated nothing for the general public. Before we put BHO on the money why don't we see how his performance plays out.

our Government at work: we're just as doomed as doomed can be.
Posted by: Jerny | February 12, 2009 4:21 PM
This is a waste of money! They should de-comission the penny. It costs more to mint than it is worth.
Posted by: mike b | February 12, 2009 4:23 PM
Really? You throw away money? Huh, you must be very well-off. I save my change in a jar and bring them to the bank every few months. Last time I had over $300. If you are so rich that it's more convenient to throw away cash instead of holding it, maybe you should give it away instead.

Amen Vic D.
All you sourpusses, go complain about something else. Don't complain about the pennies; complain instead about your elected officials putting us in bailout debt for trillions. But leave the pennies alone. Especially today - it's Abe's Birthday.

Such a shame that it's illegal to melt these stupid things down into something useful.

What do you think? I put up this poll: Cool or Lame? The new Lincoln penny, what do you think? [VOTE] - http://www.thriveorfail.com/434b3

Michael.....what's this....illegal to what.....uh oh!

I assume they will picture Barry O. in a stove pipe hat?
Posted by: bdd | February 12, 2009 5:49 PM
When I don't use them, I save them. When I have a jar full of them with other change, I deposit them.
It does add up.

Hey Kids!
If you don't want your change, give it to me, or someone who WILL toss it into a jar at the back of the closet.
I've been known to pick them up off the street, and have also been known to dive into co-worker's garbage bins to save the 17 cents whatever that they threw in there. :)
Just in pennies alone we have saved/rescued over $200. That's gonna buy a whole lot of groceries...same with the silver change, when the time is right, it'll be changed into paper currency and taken to the local grocery store.
You are a FOOL if you throw away your money, no matter what denomination.
A penny saved, remember...
VIVA LA PENNY!!!!!!!!!!! LOL ;)

I see what you did there VDB...
VERY clever.
New pennies (actually called cents) are cool, bring 'em on.
Posted by: Frank Gasparro | February 12, 2009 7:30 PM
watch the pennies and the dollars take care of themsleves. I've always lived by that, and would never NOT pick up a penny on the street. Maybe that is why the lousy economy, although a bother, doesn't hurt me very much.

When the penny goes away, so does our first world rating.
Posted by: Mitch | February 12, 2009 9:02 PM
Only a complete idiot would want to keep the penny. It costs $1.26 to make a penny and it's a total waste. Get rid of the penny and find another way to honor Lincoln and pick a different coin to stick in your loafers. The world won't end, I promise.
Posted by: Rebecca | February 12, 2009 11:24 PM
Great President, wrong coin. The penny has had practically no value for years. It really is time to eliminate it - or to revalue the currency so pennies again have value.
Posted by: KAG | February 12, 2009 11:45 PM
The penny is not worthless. In fact we should bring back the 1/2 penny. This business of rounding to the nearest penny is so 20th century, we need to go back to the 19th century. Imagine all the fun combinations of change - $4.354! I can't wait for this. We can even put Lincoln on the 1/2 penny since I think his likeness is likely to be forgotten soon.
Posted by: Jake | February 13, 2009 12:57 AM
I'm surprised they didn't change Lincoln's bust for BO's

Just an idea...if it cost more to make a penny than it's worth out of metal....why not make it out of plastic ?
