"I don't want to pretend that today marks the end of our economic problems,'' President Barack Obama said today, calling the $787-billion economic stimulus bill that he signed "the beginning of the first steps to set our economy on a firm foundation.''
Obama, traveling to Denver to sign a measure that cleared Congress with only three Republican senators and no Republican members of the House supporting it last week, thanked the Democratic leaders of Congress for swift passage of the package.
"What makes this recovery plan so important is not just that it will save or create 3.5 million jobs,'' he said. "We're putting Americans to work on work that needs doing... We are remaking the American landscape with the largest new investment in our infrastructure since Eisenhower built the Interstate highways.''
Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, offered another perspective on the bill today: "Americans looking for jobs and struggling to pay bills will be disappointed by the spending package written by congressional Democrats and signed by President Obama today. The transparency and bipartisanship that President Obama promised the American people was sacrificed to pass a pork-laden bill without any public review or meaningful Republican support.''
The spending in the plan represents the biggest federal investment in education ever, the president said, and does more to advance the cause of health care than anything done in the past decade.
"The road to recovery will not be straight. We will make progress and there will be slippage along the way. There will be hazards and reverses... But I have every confidence that if we are willing to do the critical work that needs to be done.... Then we will leave the struggling economy behind us....
"It's about rejecting the notion that our fate is somehow written for us,'' the president said, "and instead laying claim to a destiny of our own making.''

I am grateful for the work this law represents and for the work the American people will be able to do because of it. I credit President Obama for steering a true course through rough weather. The ship of state is in good hands.
The families I work with in Chicago need this lift.

The President and the majority party Dems (thank you America) have emerged from their first fight with Republicans victorious and largely unscathed. Meanwhile, GOP congressional officials are even less popular now than they were in January.
The striking thing is that the GOP slide has come as a result of their own handiwork. President Obama and the Dems haven't been out there attacking them in the same way they are attacking -- they've simply been pushing for what they think is right, and trying to be as gracious as possible while doing it, meanwhile (and I didn't think this was even possible), the GOP's approval rating has dropped even lower than it was on Jan 20.

Pork, pork and more pork. $8 Billion for a high speed rail line between LA and Vegas, and the Public Transit System in Chicago is going to be another $200 Million over budget once again. How about a few Billion to fix the mass transit system in one of the largest cities in the country, instead of a high speed rail line? What a damn joke.

Change you can see through. We have gone from 5 Million new jobs created to 3.5 million jobs created or "saved". His "Larry the Cable Guy" stand back and git er done approach doesn't work. Harry Reidfraud and Nancy Belalugosi wrote this Porkapalooza and our kids and grandkids will get the bill. Hope he had a nice weekend getting a haircut and playing hoops while the "emergency" bill waited to be signed.

People, let's give it time to see if this stimulus will actually work. I'm refraining on being negative about it until I see results (or not). What the Dems have offered is more than any Repug has done or offered. I feel the Repugs don't want to do anything good for the general populace, but rather maintain the status quo of extortion, exploitation, and just pure greed! I also agree with your sentiment, Blinky!

Come 2010 we will ensure that even more of these minority party Repuglican obstructionists join the ranks of the unemployed.
One can trust that then they'll appreciate the job creation they attempted to thwart.
The Repugs don't care about the truth, nor their constituents.
They've been cast into the wilderness, and they're just flailing around, hoping it'll somehow land them back in power.

Unfortunately, there was no stimulus in this bill for me.. our joint income exceeds the $150k but live in the most taxed and expensive area of the country... so no cars, houses or rebates will be shared with the country...just more savings... and less spending

I think a stimulus plan ought to stimulate. What would stimulate me would be Obama kicking in the heads of Congressional Republicans and then urinating on their combined neurons (total = 13).

The Repuglicans have reduced themselves to -- adopting in lockstep the strategy that they must bet the farm on the proposition that their return to glory depends on their doing everything possible to ensure that there WON'T be a recovery (while of course sanctimoniously proclaiming the opposite). They are also betting that the American public will continue to be so brainwashed by the likes of Rush, Drudge and Fixed Noise that they won't notice that the Repugs are staking their future on misery and failure.

Three trillion in three weeks. Between Geithner, Pelosi and Reid and all the other hacks. Not a bad record for spending all in all. Don't point the finger at any particular party. This fearmongering on both sides of the aisle is just sickening. Rather than leading, we just keep paying for all the political agendas. It's about time EVERYONE is upset.
To put it in perspective:
One million seconds comes out to be about 11½ days. A billion seconds is 32 years. And a trillion seconds is 32,000 years.
Morally indefensible.

"The lighter wallet" and the "$13" Repug talking points are hilarious, as usual. I'm guessing that they got these marching orders from Druggy Rush and Seany Vannity yesterday because Repugs don't have the ability to think for themselves.
The funniest part of their schtick is that they were the same clowns who were cheerleading for Bush and the congressional Repugs while they were spending the last eight years burning up billions upon billions in Iraq (most of it unaccounted for) and giving tax cuts to the rich oligarchy of America.

Seriously? You'd (general "you" here, no one specific) rather have Bush back in office, trashing the country and the world? Stamping out the poor and giving it all to the rich? Or is it that you're just scared of things changing, being different than before, or goodness forbid, getting better? I guess you would rather lose your job, your house, everything you worked for, just like what's happening all around you. Or are you bitter because you have a great job making oodles of money and don't want to help others in trouble? It's those others going down that are going to pull you under too.
What would you have said if Obama sat on his hands and did nothing? Hm, complain some more I bet. Nothing's ever right, huh? Do you have the answers? Can you fix this mess we're in? Thought so. Who's to say yet if it will work or not but give something a chance, people. At least someone's trying to get us out of the nightmare mess that Bush buried us in and it's better than doing nothing, right?
Posted by: Becky | February 17, 2009 5:43 PM
Where were all the Republicans just a few weeks ago - why didn't THEY DO SOMETHING when they were in office. Oh wait, they did, they passed and instituted the first part of the stimulus that they are now criticizing. Odd don't you think? Now Cheney is pissed at Bush (hum, like I care!). What would you critics have the man do? He has been in office for only a couple of weeks - the stimulus needed to be done NOW - he should wait for the same people who put us in this mess (the Republicans) to decide if they like it, don't like it, should help, should not, -- come on - YOU LOST - Now it's the other guys turn, you've screwed up this country for 8 years - now you're going to sit back and complain? Go ahead - you still lost!

Currently, Obama is Pelosi's puppet. There is a power struggle between these two, and she wanted to make a point by passing it ASAP without even trying for Republican support to show whose in charge, her and not Obama. They are just disappointed that he is struggling and pulling at the strings instead of being completely in line. If Obama is able to separate himself from his puppetmasters, I think he will be an excellent president.
I just don't like that Obama used fear in his statements when trying to sell this to the American public, which the majority do not believe is the best way to go.

Stock market is down +25% since November- 40% since June ( when Obama was nominated)
Clearly this form of economics is not creating any type of confidence - stock pricing is a indicator of investor's "looking forward" confidence..
Obama's daily fear message designed to give him an out should (when) his New Deal on crack doesn't stimulate anything - is pretty much freaking everyone that might hire someone or buy something into putting off the hire/buy until his stomach ache goes away...
Nobody is willing to invest or let go of the HUGE amount of venture or general investment capital that is currently waiting on the sidelines hoping that a reasonable, non confrontational tax environment will develop AND nobody knows what more attacks this admin will place on the wealth and job producers in this country through class warfare tax policies that "spread the wealth " Obama has shoved down the throat of US busineses...
Those are facts -
Posted by: heartburn | February 17, 2009 6:07 PM
Setting the record straight... The president has the power to act in a time of war, not access funds for the war-- That's the Senate's job. Look who was in power in the Senate when we largely left Afghanistan and focused on the losing war in Iraq. Someone needed to approve those dollars other than the president. Furthermore, look at what is breaking our back as a nation: greed in general. Remember in 2004-06 when the Republicans were being blamed for the huge contractor deals and kickbacks (which is accurate...and so wrong), in 2007 when the Dems came to power the voices ceased because a new party started receiving the kickbacks. Follow the money, people.
For this pork bill, 36% of it is tax breaks. Hurray... HOWEVER, very few of the tax breaks are going to the small-med. businesses who employ, what was the number, over 70% of the US workforce?! You know, the people losing their jobs. It's really simple: high taxes on businesses eliminates jobs: lower taxes on businesses and they hire more employees. An actor was even smart enough to figure this out (Regan).
This multi-billion dollar addendum to put in a rail system from LA to Vegas is a joke. Greed is what put us in this position and now we are creating a 'stimulus' for people to indulge themselves further? Please.
One more thing: 3.5 million jobs? Think of 3.5 million laborers working on termed tasks, not long-term career jobs. Think about it... 2 years max and those 3.5 million jobs...POOF. GONE.

The Democrats are visibly nervous as their fiscal Frankenstein comes to life.
-
Notice how the White House said the porkulus bill would create 3M jobs... then it was 3.5M... then as the debate went on, it was 4M. Now that it's passed, it's already dialed-back to 3.5M new and "saved" jobs... whatever those are... and "patience" is urged before it's even been signed by Obama.
-
When it turns out to be like 1-2M in reality, or even a net loss, Obama and Emanuel will blame it on Bush, of course. Never mind that Ronald Reagan created 20M jobs, and he didn't need $800B to do it.
-
Unfortunately for Obama, they now own this clunker- they were looking for co-conspirators in the GOP to share the blame with when this irresponsible nonsense "stimulates" nothing but inflation... and of course, the deficit.
-
It will also stimulate the Republican Party... who will clean the Democrats' clocks in 2010 and 2012.
-
This bill likely presages the death knell of the mindless "Obamamania" phenomenon- a lot of you out-there are going to feel pretty silly in 12 mos or so.

Den C -- News flash for you: The reason the number of jobs created/saved went down is BECAUSE OF THE REPUBLICANS! Their only mantra through all of this has been "tax cuts . . . tax cuts . . . tax cuts." In order to try to get some cooperation from the Repubs, the original bill had to be scaled back. Pay attention. It was much, much stronger than it is now. But the Repubs had to whine and complain until they got their way. One-third of the bill is tax cuts and they STILL aren't happy. Not bipartisan? No Republican input? Not quite.
Posted by: Milw-Town | February 17, 2009 7:03 PM
It's hard to understand the Repukes "%100 obstructionism" stance when they must know that all of the campaign ads for 2010 will state: GOP representative X voted against "New Jobs" and against the largest tax cut for struggling middle class wage-earners in American history...idiots.
Posted by: CS Nowik | February 17, 2009 7:09 PM
This storyline is one that will haunt the GOP, hopefully for decades.
While the job of the minority is to oppose, it is also to offer alternatives. The Repugs tax cuts for the rich, the corporate and big oil brought us to the mess we are in now and so far that's all they've got. Maybe they'll change their storyline, but history and ideology make that highly unlikely. They keep trying to write FDR's history while failing to notice that they are acting just like the Hooverite Republicans did back then and that left the Repugs in the minority for a looooong time.

ration.
On top of that- this bills has nothing to do with stimulus and everything to do with Nancy Pelosi's liberal agenda.
Already tne market has spoken- time to flee
American investments and head for gold- b/c the only thing that will grow over the next 10 years in America is the number of gov bureacrats

Mike Buresh -- OK, let's check the stats from "The New Deal." Using the years 1933 - 1938, here are some basic stats for you: Unemployment from 25 percent 16 percent; GNP from 68 to 97; exports $1.6 billion to $3.1 billion. Did recovery take longer than expected? Yes. But do not say The New Deal didn't work.

"Eight to 10 dollars a week? How is that supposed to stimulate the economy?
Experts say a little goes a long way. Maybe you help keep a restaurant open by eating out when you otherwise wouldn't. Or perhaps you buy a pair of shoes you otherwise wouldn't (albeit not Manolo Blahniks). The bottom line, proponents say, is that money will flow into the economy that wouldn't have before. Critics say the tax credit frees up too little cash for individual taxpayers."-Swamp Writer James Oliphant in a stimulus FAQ story that conveniently had no comments board.
After that statement I don't know how the Tribune can still employ Oliphant without at least making him take a fourth-grade math class. How disconnected from reality are these idiots? What meal are you going to eat for lunch for $10 these days? Maybe McDonald's or Wendy's but that's about it. And stimulating the fast food industry is REALLY going to help the economy? C'mon, these are the places the democrats complain about creating "burger flipper" jobs. Jimmy John's and Chipotle ONCE a week are out of the question, too, if you want sides.
The question is, is Oliphant really this retarded - writing that while fantasizing about Manolo Blahniks - or does he actually believe the BS he just typed?

Posted by: heartburn | February 18, 2009 10:44 AM
Your missing the point, this isn't made to fix anything. This bill and it's contents(including the seizure of the census to distribute delegates to more left leaning states)are in-line with "remaking" of America, his term not mine. These both ensure a long tenure for both him and his party.Every bit given garners more dependance on a more social attitude concerning finances, the grand finale being seizure of all private banking and healthcare. What's next, abolishing term limits maybe?
