When you're a member of the White House press corps traveling with the president to cover his out-of-town events, there's the inevitable downtime as you wait to be screened by the Secret Service before being placed in the bus that travels with the motorcade to the event site.

You try to stay busy, of course. Peter Nicholas, one of our Tribune Washington Bureau colleagues who covers the White House, is no exception. He found himself this morning taking a photograph of a stray basketball shoe.

Actually, it wasn't just any basketball shoe. It was a size 23 number autographed by the Phoenix Suns superstar center Shaquille O'Neal who presented it on Tuesday to President Barack Obama.

It was sitting on a table at the Intercontinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley, AZ. presumably waiting to be inspected by one of the bomb-sniffing dogs.

Among the many questions that needs answering, what the heck is Obama going to do with this shoe?

OK, that was just a sneaky way to get around the moratorium on dog stories.

Ya got in 2 references to dogs, actually.

the K-9 corps,

and , dogs as in feet.

I wouldn't be surprised if the GOPer Murdoch Post has another monkey cartoon in store to commemorate this with....idiots.
It's no wonder 3/4 of the country hates the GOP.
