President Obama showed up in the Oval Office in shirtsleeves the day after inauguration. So did President Bush, pictured here in 2001 with Harriet Miers. (Huffington Post photo)
by Mark Silva
So, little more than a day after Andy Card, a chief of staff for former President Bush, blasts President Obama for breaking the Bush dress code - jacket and tie in the Oval Office, please - out comes a photo of a jacketless Bush in the Oval.
Credit the Huffington Post (see below, too) for a dilligent search of the photo files that could cause Card some pause before he pursues the line of argument that he pursued on CBS' Inside Edition earlier this week - "that there should be a dress code of respect....I wish that [Obama] would wear a suit coat and tie."
Obama's often informal sartorial approach - and we're talking about removal of the suit-coat here, for crying out loud, not boxer shorts and in the Oval - has created a bit of a stir since he showed up in shirt-sleeves the day after his inauguration.
The photo of Bush is date Jan. 22, 2001--two days after his own inauguration.
"The Oval Office symbolizes...the Constitution, the hopes and dreams, and I'm going to say democracy,'' Card said. "And when you have a dress code in the Supreme Court and a dress code on the floor of the Senate, floor of the House, I think it's appropriate to have an expectation that there will be a dress code that respects the office of the president."
And that's Harriet Miers in the picture with Bush - the friend and counsel whom he nominated for the Supreme Court - only to withdraw her after she started speaking in public.
The HuffPost also reminds us of a tradition that Card has overlooked: shirtsleeves. See the Post's photo collection here and on the next page:

Someone needs to remind this guy Bush is no longer in office!

I think people need to stop caring about insignificant things like this. I don't care what the President wears in the Oval Office if he does the job correctly. Bush may have upheld a strict dress code, but I wouldn't exactly say that it helped him make better decisions.

did we elect a suit and tie or a person?
seems to me that people can be a little far off on the stuffy side when it comes to clothing.
i always found a tie to feel more like a noose around my neck - and they're not even functional.
i'm far more concerned about what Obama DOES than what he WEARS.

Just another misinformed Bush administration lackey driven by small minded ideology. Why are we not even barely surprised by this episode?

The man is working and in shirtsleeves, jogging suit or barefooted the word here is "working" so lighten up. My director takes off his suit coat and rolls up his sleeves when he enters his office. That means he's ready to dig in....
Posted by: Anonymous | February 6, 2009 9:03 AM
The big deal is not that he had his coat off, but that he had the heat turned up to 80 degrees when he said we need to turn ours to under 70. can you spell elitist ?

Typical republican tactic. Will Andy Card criticize Bush for doing the exact same thing?
Posted by: NoConservativePropaganda | February 6, 2009 9:09 AM
I'd rather have a president in the Oval Office in his shirt sleeves working hard and solving problems and getting things done.
Unlike our former president who wore a suit, left the office at 5pm every day, took more vacation time than any other president ever did, and still screwed up every single thing he did as president.
He's the president. Why can't he just CHANGE the dress code for the Oval Office? He's the boss of his workplace after all!

Who cares about the problems of our country as long as you follow the dress code. Maybe that is why we are in the state that we are in.
I heard that this idiot is the one that was sent out for cheese burgers at one of the sessions. Great to know that there are these idiots roaming around in Washington.
I hope they give this President a chance but I doubt it, they are more interested in their own agenda as the likes of Rush L., O'Rielly or whoever.
United States, I do not think so.

Andrew Card needs something to do.
Something more important than making ridiculous commentary.
He obviously has too much time on his hands. . . . . .
Posted by: RikM | February 6, 2009 9:26 AM
The criticism was dumb, but this 'response' was down right idiotic.
How many years do we have to put up with the 'logic' of "Bush did it"? Who cares what Card says... obviously Obama supporters. Grow up and ignore him, that is what the comment deserves.
Regardless of what Obama wears, he is having a TOUGH time right now... let's worry about that! My god, he has resulted to fear tactics to pass a bill that only 38% of Americans think is a good idea! His own party is working against his agenda, and they are losing ground to the Republicans over this partisan wasteful bill that even the OMB has said (again) is WORSE than the possiblity of a depression in the long run!
Posted by: Matt | February 6, 2009 9:29 AM
Will the media stop at no lengths to defend Obama? Maybe they should be spending more time looking into the backgrounds of cabinets appointees instead? Might actually find something of substance there, folks.

Great pictures of the Supreme-seated Bush and President Ford wearing only shirtsleeves while in the Oval Office. Was Bush all spiffy and wearing a jacket when he inserted the famous 16 word lie into his SOTUA? The pugs are petty and sore losers. Andy Card is a loser for making an issue about jackets. He wants to obscure the fact that this is the Bush recession/depression. Pugs throw mud filled with red herrings and boomerangs. Note to Andy and Dick--you and yours were voted out. You were all weighed and measured and found to be derelicts.

Quite a few times in life I have said stuff that has proven me to be a fool: having done so has assisted me in recognizing others when they are being a fool. Perhaps Andrew Card will now be in better shape to recognize fools in the future.

You lefties are great at changing the subject. The "point" of the story of Obama's jacket-less office is that he'd cranked up the heat how he likes it ("you could grow Orchids in there"). This from a guy telling the rest of us how to set our thermostats.
But, hey, when all else fails, Blame Bush.

The country & the NEWS MEDIA have more important things to think about than whether the president wears a jacket in the Oval Office. I could care less as long as he is working to fix this mess.

Unlike Bush who did little or nothing constructive while in the Oval Office (I suppose that gave him spare time to think of nonsense like dress codes), Obama has a TON of work to do with the mess he inherited from Bush. SO WHAT if he rolls up his shirt sleeves while getting to work on that mess?
Posted by: VA | February 6, 2009 10:19 AM
Obama was not a confirmed alcoholic but was an admitted "partier" mixing cocaine and booze. Calling him an alcoholic goes too far.

Wait a minute...
"...Andy Card, a chief of staff for former President Bush, blasts President Obama for breaking the Bush dress code - jacket and tie in the Oval Office, please..."
The Bush dress code? Isn't Bush out of office? Seems to me that President Obama can make any rule he wants in HIS office while Citizen Bush is no longer relevant.
Andy Card is even less relevant than Bush. Why are we wasting any time with what this moron says. Put him in the closet with Rush and all his cronies and let's get back to the business of running this country.

Only one thing matters as far as the Oval Office - that the people who work in it deliver results that contribute to a better life for Americans. If the president came to work dressed in only a jock strap, that wouldn't help the results much, but suit coat vs. shirt and tie is pretty much immaterial to results.

Did President Bush replace Andy Card with Josh Bolton because he wasn't enforcing the dress code strictly enough as Chief of Staff? After six years of front line experience in the West Wing the best piece of constructive criticism Mr. Card could offer President Obama is that he shouldn't remove his suit jacket in the Oval Office? That is truly sad.
Posted by: Form Over Substance | February 6, 2009 11:10 AM
This is why so many former-Republicans voted for Obama this time around. The Republicans are so busy sweating the small stuff that they have no clue what is really important to people. Bush wore a suit and tie most of the time but made bad decisions all of the time. We weren't fooled by the costume.

Wearing a suit coat at the desk all day is a waste - and it isn't good for the coat (wears the elbows, ruins the press - and think of all the wrinkles in the back. Card clearly doesn't value good clothing.

I'm not a fan of Obama but since when does he have to abide by the rules set by President Bush. Each President sets their own work rules. What about that picture of Bill Clinton? Is he in his pajamas while doing a radio message? More importantly, which one of his bimbos is under the desk? He is such a pathetic human being.
Posted by: Tired of Politics | February 6, 2009 12:22 PM
I think it would be perfectly ok if President Obama wanted to walk around with fishing gear on whatever makes his job happy as long as he puts jobs back into this country. Maybe some of our congressmen would like to donate some of their warm clothes to the people who are in tent cities so they could be warm at night. Also some good foods like red, yellow and green peppers. How about fruit. Foods that are nutritous so they too will want to have a job too. This comment is for our President, his cabinet; also for God and our country.

Clinton: zipperless trousers, internes must wear blue dresses at all times.
FDR, Truman, Ike , JFK...etc. all observed the coat and tie rule.
Sort of like the Ivy League colleges up to about 1970.
Barack needs to tweak image just a little bit, to insist on the respect that the Royals do in England.
He's not just a political icon now; he is also the personification of the United States of America (among other things), the Head of State, as Elizabeth II is of England.
And, as Arthur Miller might have said,
