One will be missing today when the Senate votes on the economic stimulus bill that cleared the House this afternoon.
Sen. Edward Kennedy, battling brain cancer, is in Florida and will miss the final Senate vote. The Massachusetts Democrat is undergoing treatment and physical rehabilitation, spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner said today, and Democrats don't need his vote for final passage of a package that cleared the House today without a single Republican vote but probably has three Republican supporters in the Senate.
Kennedy had returned to the Senate on Monday for an earlier, test vote on the plan. It passed by 61-36, one more vote than the 60 needed to advance a vote.
Kennedy plans to travel between Florida and Washington for future Senate business "until the weather gets warmer here," Wagoner said in Washington.
Monday's trip was his Kennedy's first to the Capitol since he suffered a seizure the day that President Barack Obama was inaugurated. The 76-year-old lawmaker was stricken at a luncheon in the Capitol after Obama's swearing-in.
