White House sends Burris a warning: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

In what sounded like a veiled threat, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs called on Sen. Roland Burris to "take some time over the weekend" to explain once and for all exactly what happened before his appointment to the Senate and to consider "his future."

While not saying that President Barack Obama would join the swelling chorus for Burris to quit the Senate seat, Gibbs left the impression that something like that could happen if the White House is left unsatisfied with Burris's actions in coming days.

"The appointment of Sen. Burris and his taking the Senate seat was based largely on the ... factual representations that he made to the people of Illinois through interviews and through his testimony to the impeachment committee," Gibbs said. "It has been reported extensively (that) some of the stories seem to be at variance with what's happened and that the president is supportive of an investigation that would get some full story out.

"I think it might be important for Sen. Burris to take some time this weekend to either correct what has been said and certainly think of what lays in his future," Gibbs said.

Gibbs' statement came on the same day that Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn called for Burris to resign, one of an increasing number of Democrats to issue such a call. Burris's political troubles arose after he changed his story several times as to the number and nature of the contacts he had with former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the former governor's inner circle.

After first saying he only expressed his interest in the Senate seat vacated by President Obama to Blagojevich's confidants, Burris has drawn heavy criticism after finally admitting this week that he offered to raise money for the former governor at the same time Burris was seeking the Senate appointment.

Burris has maintained that he never gave the former governor any money, but that argument has failed to quell the growing demands for his resignation. Many critics believe he would not have been seated to begin with if he had told the full truth when he testified before the Illinois lawmakers during the former governor's impeachment.

Resign. We want real leadership. Blag had no right to appoint you. Get out. We want to make our own choice.

Obama's two rules for handling political allies:

1. At the first hint of political embarassment, throw 'em under the bus.

2. When in doubt, refer to Rule 1.

Burris got his title. Which is all he wanted for his tombstone.
The people of Illinois got the shaft and we have to foot the bill for the new election and the prosecutors.

Burris should make up his mind; is he a Senator of strong mind...or...is he a dodering old man? Roland Burris was the Attorney General in Illinois and Comptroller he should be held to a higher standard. When he was questioned in the Senate he was sitting next to his lawyer and advisor. He knew full well why he was there and what they were looking for yet he chose to be combative instead of cooperative, looking out for himself and the Senate seat NOT the people of Illinois.

Hey...when the Messiah needed him for his vote on the Stimulus, all was OK.

Now....it's throw him under the bus.

But , of course, it's all transparency!

Looks like Obama finally realizes what a liability the crook Burris is. This just weeks after Obama forced Harry Reid to seat him. I guess the messiah makes mistakes, after all.

The press secretary should know the proper use of lie and lay.

Will someone please tell Obama he is the most powerful man in the Western world and he doesn't need these Illinois political hacks anymore. Throw the corrupt Daley Machine, Crook County politicians, and various members of the Illinois Combine under the bus, and move on, and he might have a chance for a second term.

Jeff -- the Messiah needed 60 votes for his pork bill. Burris was useful for that -- wouldn't have passed without him. Now Obama has signed the pork bill into law -- without waiting the 5 days he promised -- so Burris no longer needed and is now a liability. Under and out!

Hang 'em high, you good, old constitutionalists !! Ride those bill of rights, out on a rail !! Illinois, the odious Land of Lynchings !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

C'mon Mark, it's Gibbs, what do you expect? He's just hoping to keep the ums and uhs down to a reasonable level and to only be humiliated by Jake Tapper catching him in a lie once a week.

Hang 'em high, you good, old constitutionalists !! Ride those bill of rights, out on a rail !! Illinois, the odious Land of Lynchings !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Mark Manuel:
It was more likely than not a VERBAL statement. That said, it's the blogger's error in transcribing and/or lack of editing.

Unfortunately, this has become an accepted error, such as '500 words or less'. Your point stands solidly, though. He should know the correct syntax.

Burris should absolutely keep his seat. Blago had every right to appoint him, and Burris has done nothing illicit to get that appointment. This is another witchhunt to extract even more blood from Blago.

The only transparency of the Obama administration is the obvious: Born of the Chicago Machine Politics, Use em & loose em, I love you but too bad for you politics and the "protect yourself at all times" mentality.

Of course president Obam has made several mistakes on this one charater study of Illinois politics from which he came. He first must have thought that his "Baby Momma of politics", the Chicago Machine, would not be a liability once he made it to the White House. Secondly, he has made the error of bringing too many Chicago scum with him that have the skelatons to ruin his presidency and he obviously believes his own hype and rhetoric.

This is a large gaping wound, that if left untreated could turn gang green very quickly. If he doesn't put a tourniquet on this, stop the bleeding and spread of infection, he's in big trouble.

Calling in the Wolfpack - where's Rahm?

"The press secretary should know the proper use of lie and lay."

Yes, Mark G. Manuel. And he should also learn that "either" needs an "or" and not an "and." Did he actually prepare that statement?

Don wrote: "Hang 'em high, you good, old constitutionalists !! Ride those bill of rights, out on a rail !! Illinois, the odious Land of Lynchings !!"

Don, I know I can always count on you to defend the indefensible.

I guess the word transparency means something different in Democrat lingo. Now everytime I hear any politician use that word it makes think..lie, liar, and lying. Nothing transparent in that!

Told you so

Stephanie - what difference does it make whether it was a verbal or a written statement? It's still wrong. And a press secretary should know the difference.

Frank James should have typed "think of what lays [sic] in his future," Gibbs said."

Oh well - whatever they take away from Roland Burris, they can't take away that tombstone. And it will always read SENATOR. Sad, sad, sad that a man would sacrifice his entire reputation for something so small.

Senator Burris has an affliction.
He like the vast majority of Illinois Politicians has a "truth impairment" Basically, he just does not know right from wrong. As an "honesty challenged" unelected official he needs our sympathy and help not our scorn.
If we are looking for a replacement I think that Mel Reynolds should be appointed to the seat. Mel has a complete pardon from President Clinton for his various crimes and is now on the government payroll as a stooge for Jessie Jackson Jr.
He would fit in well with the current crop of Illinois unelected officials.

As quoted in this article "Many critics believe he would not have been seated to begin with if he had told the full truth when he testified before the Illinois lawmakers during the former governor's impeachment."

Of course...that's why he lied...He should be charged with Perjury! Illinois deserves better!

Roland Burris is a credit to his race; this is all just another example of The Man holding a brother down.

I doubt that the White House has enough strength to push Burris out. Obama takes his orders from King Daley. Obama has never had the smarts to go against the Chicago Machine that put him in the White House. Obama - Unqualified, Empty Suit, and Puppet of Daley!

Obama will never admit one way or another on Burris. As he is like being on a log in water, if Obama coments he will tilt either way.

Liars poker. Rodland's up.

this is the beginning of the end , but many in the know thought that it would take at least 6mos. before the defecation into his mess kit would begin the CHICAGO CURSE never fails to amuse me as i watched it going on for 65 yrs. 40 of those connected sort of close.

His tombstone should read:
Here Lies Roland Burris
The former
Junior PIMP from Illinois

NOW its getting really interesting. Called on to resign by the governor, the major paper in the state, counteless citizens, and now the President. Plus his chief of staff fled the sinking ship.

Will he resign? He must be so torn between the humiliation of the public outcry against him and keeping the seat he wanted so badly. Poor Rolo, he loves being called "Senator" so much. Loves the deference, the chauffeuring hither and yon, the illusion of being important, all the perks and status of being a senator. It's all he ever wanted, the title.

What a fraudulent, phoney poltroon.

Looks like the RNC has come up with some cash and has its munchkins out in force today!

Burris will not resign, nor should he.

The fact is, he has not given untruthful answers, either under oath or otherwise.

And none of the above munchkins can contradict that by quoting any Q and A where the A was false.

Darkwater, there are reportedly some good drugs for severe dissociative episodes like you and King Daley seem to be having; talk to your doctor or your local Chicago Machine Operator.

Springfield, what is gang green?

Obama wanted this clown in, yet he won't come right out tell him to resign. Protecting his color?

Would Jeff, Beth and others of their ilk please stop referring to our president snidely as "The Messiah" - it is pretty much offensive to, uh, everybody.

I would think they could strike a deal where Burris could stay in office if he agrees not to run for election. The Dems need that extra vote and they don't want a special election.

"Rod Blagojevich is delivering for the people of Illinois."-Barack Obama

The White House Press Secretary? I bet Burris is quaking in his boots over that call. Who's next, the Under Secretary of Underwear?

C'mon saviour Obama, get serious.

One of the big campaign promises Obama used to pander for votes was to change politics as usual. We are witnessing demagoguery at its best. How hollow "change that we can believe in" is becoming. The Burris mess reveals politics supersedes the will of Il. voters for Obama. His Chicago roots and senior WH advisors will continue to tarnish his term. All he has to do is what is morally correct. It is truly disappointing.

American Ideas vs Blagojevich-Burris! .

This is America, a nation of laws! Not China or Russia! Whatever happened to Due Process? Innocent Until Proven Guilty? Regardless of what you or I may think about the Blagojevich scandal, removing a sitting Governor based on allegations from a U.S. Attorney is setting a terrible precedent

Blagojevich or Burris may or may not be guilty; but this RUSH to judgment has the state government looking more like a KANGAROO government in some totalitarian country rather than one governed by the rule of law in the United States.

Regarding Senator Burris, I think this issue should be addressed by the STATE of Illinois, not the Office of the President. It is best for U.S. Presidents to try to limit their interference in the affiars of the state government

Iraq, Guantanamo, Abu Grave, Wiretaps, Trial by Jury, Blagojevich, now Burris—History will show how we are departing in this century from the American ideas that have been cherished for centuries by people around the world.

As of today, Governor Blagojevich has not been convicted of any crime; therefore, I do not believe that any STATE should have made or enforced any law that would abridge the basic rights of a U.S. citizen.

I also believe that Governor Blagojevich should have been allowed to confront the witnesses against him and there should have been a process for Blagojevich to obtain witnesses in his favor. America is hailed as a Beacon of Light because we have protected these basic rights of every U.S. citizen for centuries.

If Illinois removed a two-term sitting Governor, I'm sure that you can remove a newly appointed U.S. Senator. The State of Illinois, however, should allow the investigation to proceed before initiating steps regarding Senator Burris’ future.

If the State has lost complete confidence in the process, since Senator Burris was appointed, another option is to allow Senator Burris to remain in place and proceed with plans for a SPECIAL ELECTION.

Peace Across America and in the World

The president is supportive of getting "some full story out?"
I spotted several grammatical errors in this new press secretary's responses. What's the matter--teleprompter in the White House not working?

Most importantly Capt Mark Kirk that wildly popular commando/congressman still is not a US senator

Orney

You are completely wrong. Burris did lie under oath. He has changed his story 4 times already. Of course, if you go by the law, which states that a person may amend his sworn statement with a new one, admitting that he left out/forgot/etc certain facts, then your are correct in stating he did not perjure himself. However, the fact remains that Burris did lie, and didn't correct himself until after he took the oath of office. That is not only wrong but totally wrong. He can not be trusted ever again. The Office of Senator is too important for a sleaze like Burris.

Give me a break...this is getting very old.

I am not so sure President Obama is protecting color - but more as the comment above said about the "log" - if he comments direclty he tips the log. I think he's walking the political tightrope and trying to disassoicate himself with the Illinois corruption while at the same time trying not to bite the hand that fed him - quite a balancing act. I think if Roland Burris said he would raise money for Blog during the search for the senate seat - well, he ought to step down for the good of the state and let IL try to find someone untainted to be our Senator.

Where is our other Senator? He should be showing the leadership missing from his office and demand that Burris resign immediately. It was wrong for Burris to accept the appointment and it's wrong for him to keep it. The people of Illinois demand that he RESIGN!

I'm sorry, before I sign a judgment order convicting someone I'd like to see the quoted questions and answers in their complete context, proving they lied.

Until that is produced, this whole thing still appears to me ginned up by those not few who want his seat. You know who you are.

I don't think there is any there there, certainly not enough of a there there warranting spending millions of taxpayer dollars in Illinois on a "special election". $12 million for the Rosty-Rod-Rahm seat is enough of an insult to the pub lic purse.
