Those were some pretty costly shoes Iraqi journalist Muntada al-Zeidi threw at President George W. Bush late last year.
I don't know what they cost al-Zeidi to purchase but they're going to cost him three years of his life, his sentence for tossing the shoes at Bush last December at a press conference during the then American president's farewell visit to Iraq.
BAGHDAD (AP) -- The Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at then-President George W. Bush was convicted Thursday of assaulting a foreign leader and sentenced to three years in prison, lawyers said. He shouted "long live Iraq" when the sentence was read. The verdict came after a short trial in which Muntadhar al-Zeidi, 30, pleaded not guilty to the charge and said his action was a "natural response to the occupation."
Some of his relatives collapsed after the verdict and had to be helped out of court. Others were forcibly removed by security forces when they became unruly, shouting "Down with Bush" and "Long live Iraq."
Al-Zeidi could have received up to 15 years in prison for hurling his shoes at Bush last December during a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

that should give him enough time to improve his aim

Ornery, let's hope with that improvement in aim he is able to use against Obama. And let's hope that unlike Bush, Obama gets hit with the shoe. And let's hope that the shoe at the very least bloodies Obama's face or maybe even have a hidden bomb in it!
Seriously, now, if it was Obama who was the target the media would not have made light of the situation. The Left would have been horrified. There would not have been jokes about it. This guy tried to assault the president of the U.S. and no matter who the president, that is serious and not something to make light of.

That's excessive. It was more of a political statement than an actual threat to Bush's safety.

You better be ready to do the time if you're going to attempt to assault a foreign leader...

That shoe throwing incident was amusing. I laughed out loud when I saw it. Then it was played over and over again. Bush looked like he dropped one in this trousers.
Did the individual who threw a pie into former governor George Ryan's face get sentenced to prison??

I hope someone has called the FBI on John D's threats against the President up there.

The shoe thrower guy is hero to everyone....except the batsh*t crazy Republicans here in America....

Yeah, too bad a connection was not made. See, then schrub could say he was attacked by radical Islamists and that he fought back and had the scars to *prove* it. LOL. Schrub is such a joke. I think the sentence of 3 years is a joke, and the guy will be a folk hero to many in the world. He will probably write a book about his experiences and live the American dream and probably be exhulted to god-like status in the rest of the world.

The shoe thrower is a world wide hero. In Iraq they've already built statues of him.
The shoe thrower is more popular around the world than the Republican party is.The only one's who don't like the shoe thrower are the knuckle-dragging Wingnuts here in America and they're already disliked by 3/4 of America and most of the rest of the world..

Cherly, your ignorance of the law is appalling. See Watts vs. United States for why John D's remarks are protected speech. http://supreme.justia.com/us/394/705/

Oh Cheryl, you are typical Loony Lefty who can't read. If you read my previous post, you should be clearly able to read that I am not making any kind of threat to President Obama. The first paragraph is parody of you Loons. The second paragraph clearly states that ANY president, regardless of party, should not be threatened with harm and that it is wrong for the media and the Left to make light of the situation.
But, Cheryl, dear, let's look at other posts here. Hey Joe says the only ones who don't like the shoe thrower are Republican knuckle-dragging wingnuts. NonXcellent Form is sorry that there was no connection, that Bush was not hit with the shoes. And there are plenty along those lines.
So, while my post of "what if it was Obama" is parody, we have countless posts just here in the Swamp wishing the guy did hit Bush. And, I would be willing to bet Obama's $3.75 trillion budget that just about all of you Lefty Loons would have celebrated ad naseum if Bush was assassinated or injured as president.
In fact, I remember a couple of years ago when the wheels on Air Force One blew out. There were posts from the Lefty Loons in the Swamp wishing the plane had mechanical malfunction in flight, wishing all on board died.
Truly the worst and most worthless mankind has to offer: the Freakin Loony Left!

With the signing of a troop withdrawal plan this week president Obama apparently wants to concede defeat in Iraq. Iraq always wanted to outlast on her home turf American aggression. The proud Iraqi fighters created enough unrest to apparently defeat the best laid plans of American military commanders. The rebels use car bombs and improvised explosive devices at an alarming rate to scare the coward Americans into leaving.
With a few good construction efforts totaling some $200B Iraq comes out way ahead in defeating the cowards. The failed effort in Iraq stems from an uncontrollable impoverished country Arab attitude towards the west.
In the past the U.S. policy in leaving combat involved moving positions in the world and not merely escaping a threatening and annoying situation. Less Americans will be put in harms way and less will die.
The fight will for control of Iraq will go on in a civil war way with terror groups using many of the new facilities as bases. President Obama knows how to lick his wounds and go away from a situation that will not heal. The only advantage of leaving troops involves putting the terrorist enemy on note that deterrence to terrorism remains.

I think John D should be reported to Secret Service. The BS argument that portraying explicit damage to the president is somehow protected (must be some sort of exec order Bush passed amping that one up) is just that. FALSE. YOU FLUNK JOHN D.
And there is no parity between the statements John D says 'lefties' made and the explicit statement he made.
Give it up Swamp---turn the sucker in.
And JOHN D--- rot in hell like the president who let his sycophant (or was it his 'handler') Karl Rove steal 2 elections.

Three years is excessive. I would have given him a large fine, and community service. Washing police cars for three years. . . .

They should give the guy a medal. And Bush should have asked for no punishment for the man. That would have been the gracious and appropriate thing to do. But then, the Shrub was never gracious or appropriate. What a loser!
The Secret Service should be looking into John D -- that was an outright threat to Obama. I hope they catch him!
