President Barack Obama maintains that his $787-billion economic stimulus will create or save 3.5 million jobs.

They've found 250 in Chicago. "Serious'' jobs.

The $16 billion provided by the stimulus bill for weatherization projects is responsible, Vice President Joe Biden, who is overseeing the program, said today in conjunction with Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, the senior senator from Illinois.

Biden singled out Republic Windows and Doors, a Chicago window manufacturing plant shuttered late last year, laying off 250 union workers. Republic was bought in bankruptcy court last week by Serious Materials, a California-based company that makes energy efficient windows.

"Serious... has announced plans to reopen the Republic factory and to eventually rehire all 250 of its laid-off workers at their former pay levels,'' Biden said today - pointing to the Serious statement that it picked up the closed Republic because the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will boost demand for its products.

""The reopening of this factory and the rehiring of these workers provide an excellent example of how the money in the Recovery Act is targeted to spur job creation quickly," Biden said today. "These workers will not only earn a paycheck again; they will go back to work creating products that will benefit America's long-term economic future."

"When Republic shut its doors in December, the jobs Illinois lost were not only good paying jobs, they were good for the environment too," Durbin said. "Those are the very jobs we need to preserve in order to put our economy back on track. The economic recovery package has recreated a market for energy efficient materials that virtually disappeared as our economic crisis deepened.''

Keep the bacon coming home to Illinois, gents! America will soon see the ground breaking for the "shovel ready" high speed trains from Chicago to downstate and cities of the midwest. Kiss the fantasy land/gambler express goodbye (never get the environmentalist OK, save the pikas!). Resign Roland, we do not need a second Senator!

What a joke. The company closed because the need for its product collapsed. Why are union jobs more valuable then non union jobs?

The GOP has a very clear-cut definition now: they are the party representing the interests of the top 2% of wealth.

It's a definition they've earned and proven since the Reagan Revolution. They used values conservatives, but only used them. They've been entirely about making us a corporate-military state benefiting the top 2% of wealth-holders and telling everyone else to be "personally responsible" (read: you're on your own suckers).

And increasingly, when the GOP talk policy, they talk the policy of the corporate-military state. They've stopped trying to hide it. Now they're at the "If you don't agree you're just too stupid to see how your being bankrupt makes the rest of us stronger" stage.

And that's the anvil we need to continue to tie round their necks.

How many of those 250 employees are illegal?

Wow 250 jobs out of the $15.74 billion (1/50th of the $787 billion for Illinois) / by 250 jobs = $62.96 million per job!!! Oh, that's low paying union jobs that are in the pockets of the D u m b o c r a t s.

250 jobs, $16 billion.

$64,000,000 per job.

Wow, 250 jobs. How many jobs are missing because Chicago refuses to let Walmart in? 1,000? So they stop 1,000 jobs, but cheer because they got 250.

Interesting math, those Democrats.

So $787 Billion saves or creates 3.5Million jobs. That's $224,000 per job that pays an average of $50,000 a year. Where is that extra $175,000 going????

Hello? Democrats? Care to answer? Hello media? Care to ask any questions?

I don't live in Chicago, but I have a feeling you all need way more new jobs than that. Take 250 and put 2 or 3 zeroes behind it.

There will always be jobs for serious Democrats. It falls into several categories i.e. politics as usual, the
good old boy network or who do you know, and last but not least how much would you like to contribute?.

Serious picked up the closed"Republican"? Don't you mean Republic or was that a Freudian slip?

Hey Mark...is it Republic or "closed Republican?" You're so used to criticizing Republicans....I think you might have made a typo???

I'm glad that those people got their jobs back, but saying it's because of the stimulus is just a bit of a stretch I think.

This is laughable. This deal was before the bancruptcy court well before the stimulus bill was signed. If the Obama administration is going to take credit for creating these kinds of jobs, the economy and unemployment are going to be in big trouble. Is this the kind of "3-4 million jobs saved" he was talking about? Come on! They can't possibly be given credit for this.

And the funzzy math of a "saved" job begins.

More lies from our Senator and VP. The stimulus package only finances short-term jobs, nothing permanent. As for the 250 "new" jobs - that is a lie too. That was not created by the stimulus.

Isn't this interesting? I was told last week by the Director of NAEDA that windows and door replacement was not part of the weatherization program because that alone could cost around $12,000.00 per house.
.
To weatherize 500,000 homes the first year for 4.5 billion that will come to 9,000.00 per home as part of the stimulus money. However, the director said that $5000.00 will be the average cost per house and this is in line with what I see put out at the state level for some states and others include no figures at all.
.
I want to add that he didn't seem too happy to talk to me and I would guess that he'll be less so next week.
.
It is almost $2000.00 more per house than previous years for the what I believe is the same work.
.
This is where it starts to really get stupid. Now, they don't do windows and doors and remember this is for low income people right, so what are the chances that their windows and doors don't leak like a sieve?
Zilch!
Still they're going to go through the motions to install a blower door to locate leaks in the structure. They should be looking for leaks in their heads because that's really what's at issue here. They're gearing up to provide centers where people will undergo two to eight months of training to do what will result in a so so job This isn't rocket science folks you just need to have a little bit of sense that's all.
If it were me, I'd give 'em all the $200.00 for the insulation and let them go down to Home Depot and buy the insulation and HD will let them use the blower for free to install it themselves. You can do more houses, faster and then you can save more money because then you'll have to pay for less oil or gas as part of their heating fuel assistance program that they're on to boot. You can then send someone out to check their heating unit and fix or replace that and still be able to give them a check for a few thousand dollars as well.
If they're too old or disabled then do it for them, of course. But don't blow the thing out of proportion and fleece the people because that just pisses me off no end.
It's called abuse and it's running rampant everywhere and at all levels. Lowering the bar is not what we need to do here.
Hey Smilin' Joe, thanks, at least you're good for something.

What a joke!

The worst part about this story, is the writers believe 250 union jobs is something to crow about!
Unfortunately, 100 times that number of union jobs will be lost because of the administration's lamebrained "carbon credits" scheme.

Out of 3.5 million jobs created Chicago is getting 250! That will really help lower the unemployment numbers! There's something to boast about!

I spoke to the director of NAEDA last week inquiring as to the discrepancy between the $9000.00 of the stimulus bill for weatherizing a house to the amount of $2980.00 previously performed under the WAP program. He said that the actual average will be $5000.00 per home. He also stated to me that window and door replacement is not included in the stimulus bill. Isn't that a bit odd? The more I learn the stranger this thing gets.
Big surprise huh?
If you hear anything about this in the upcoming days you'll know it was me.
I'm a real prick sometimes.

No !! No !! No!!....The serious jobs will go to the crooks from Crook County,.. Daley, Davis, Stroger, DeLeo, Cellinni...Nothing new here.

OMG. Four years will be a long time unless you are a Union boss getting paid off.
