South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's controversial stand against accepting federal economic stimulus dollars has been attacked by congressional politicians like fellow Palmetto Stater Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), a member of the House leadership.
Now Sanford is coming under fire from the Democratic National Committee which has a new ad that takes the Republican governor, thought to be a potential presidential candidate, for allegedly playing politics with the stimulus money.
Some Democratic critics have accused the governor of trying to better position himself with fiscal hawks in his party's conservative base by rejecting the money.
A line from the ad:
South Carolina is facing tough times - but Governor Sanford is playing politics instead of doing what's right
The DNC says this is its first ad since President Barack Obama took office.
Sanford's communications director, Joel Sawyer, has issued a statement in response to the ad:
"Governor Sanford continues to believe that problems created by too much debt will never be solved by more debt. It's time to put the partisan politics aside and for people who supported this stimulus legislation to start shooting straight with taxpayers on who is paying the bill for all of this spending. This so-called 'stimulus' represents a federal predatory loan, the cost of which will be borne by future generations who will never have a chance to vote from office the very people who are saddling them with unprecedented spending and guaranteed future tax increases."

Gov. Sanfords attemp to cement him as a leader in the GOP will only lead him to making shoes out of that cement. With his state is only behind 1 other in unemployment, there will be no alternative but to raise property taxes and listen to the outcry of the people of his state.
Bye Bye Sanford!!!

Here comes the Dems hate machine.
The Governor is just being responsible the people currently holding office should take up the good example he is giving. Most Americans are not in favor of this wild spending and giveaways I am afraid we are giving away our freedoms and our future.

South Carolina has one of the worst economies in the United States. It also has the 2nd highest unemployment rate (10.5%). If this dimwit Mark Sanford doesn't want to take SC's portion of the stimulus, deliver it to another state that will accept it. When he comes running the the federal government for diaster relief, due to a hurricane or flooding, I would tell him to get lost, there is none available for him. This moron Sanford should be thrown out of office for not serving the interests of the people of South Carolina.

The Republican is trying to tell the Democrat, if we take this money with the strings attached by the Fed' Govt', it's just like the housing market and balloon payments.
The Fed' money creates programs that are paid for for a couple of years, then the States have to start funding the programs.
Unlike the "you mean I have to start paying a mortgage after 5 years with a balloon payment", The Republican is trying to be fiscally responsible for the State.

Republicans in South Carolina are bashing him too; so I guess they have a hate machine as well, Paul. Hopefully, for the suffering SC economy, the legislature will override their idiot governor.

Why place restrictions on welfare programs anyway?
Give the States back their money from the people without restrictions, and next time have Congress and the President read the bill before it's signed into LAW. LOL

Reforming state government leads to job growth? What? That's so stupid, even Sarah Palin is shaking her head. (Joe the Plumber, on the other hand, probably thinks it's sheer genius.) On the other hand, plenty of other states not stupid enough to elect someone like Mark Sanford governor would be more than happy to take that $700 million in stimulus money.
South Carolina is one of, if not the biggest, wefare states in the country!

I find the totals of the emergency stimulus package somewhat mindboggling. I see Mark Sanford's callous, political move to reject monies due South Carolina is an abomination, and downright racist in many respects, to my opinion. His jockeying for political hay is transparent, and self-serving. With our current unemployment rates and suffering of peoples of many demographics and socio-economic status, his self-serving declaration rings out as a self-promoting, insincere declaration that will only leave the citizens of SC behind and bewoed, as other states benefit from Obama's stimlous package. Although my family and I may not be direct beneficiaries of many of the outlined programs, our neighbors and fellow South Carolinians will. In turn, we will benefit from our brethern who now have money in their pockets and are off the political dole. Mark Sanford is a showman and a thief, stealing from the very least of ours, knowing they probably didn't vote for him and never would, giving him the so-called license to disregard their needs and the benefits to South Carolina in total. Shame!

Denying your state money towards unemployment benefits when more and more people in your state are losing their jobs every day...that's a real smart "strategy" Sanford.....NOT!

It is like Margret Thatcher and the Poll tax -- Take your sword -- put the point firmly in your Solar Plexus -- now drive it through your Liver -- Now die your Political Death -- Good Luck Gov Sanford and Sons

I think that if governor Sanford were serious about his economic conservatism he could accept the money, spend it wisely, estimate what effect it will have on the tax revenues of the state and lower taxes by that percentage. But when you only want to make the point that you are an unimaginative conservative who cares little about the economy of your state. Another possibility is you are economically so ignorant that you think your state will do better than the neighboring states that accept stimulus. If this is the case then you belong on Rush Limbaugh's program where the ignorant or the the untruthful display their wares.

I played the video expecting it to be Gov. Sanford, because I didn't check it's titles (my fault), but a Democrat add. So I went and found a video of Gov. Sanford explaining it from HIS perspective.
The article and most of the post and the BS from the Politicians, is misleading. Check the figures I give below.
Out of the $870 Billion Bill that no one read but voted on, Gov. Sanford said they expect to GET $2.8 Billion. They intend to SPEND $2.1 Billion, and not take the $700 million because of the Welfare strings attached by the Federal Government who didn't read what they voted on.
So, it's NOT that he's NOT going to take Stimulus money, it's he's NOT going to take 700ml, out of 2.8 billion. All approx' figures.

It's good to see politicians who are ideologically pure.
If only ideological purity could pay the bills and put food on the table.

So by PG's reckoning he's not "ideologically pure" anyway. And PG obviously isn't a resident of South Carolina who has been laid off.
Sanford cares more about his Presidential aspirations in 2012 (slim as they are) than about the people of his state.

It's so easy.
Just don't spend it on new programs with future increases in spending.
Spend it on one time shovel readies, exiting programs, and relief. This turd wants other people to suffer for his ideology.

The stupidity in this comment section is sad, especially Poli Science Prof (dear God I hope not, but considering the current state of academia I wouldn't be surprised) claiming Sanford is a "racist" for not accepting this idiotic stimulus package. Try thinking for a moment: What happens in a couple or years when the money dries up and states are left with more responsibilities, workers, etc. Where will the money come from then? Also, doesn't anyone realize that if we don't fix our financial institutions that none of this money will help in any way? Even the Congressional Budget Office says that it will actually SLOW the economy down in long run. I know it's hard for you liberals, but try actually thinking for a change.

You know what really sucks about this? There are a lot of military families in SC who are on food stamps and need all the help they can get and yet their asshole governor Sanford is doing what all the Republicons are doing - playing politics and sticking to their already failed ideology while ignoring reality.
The Republicons can cry and act like petulant children all they want but it wasn't President Obama or the Dems who put them in the moinority, it was their own stupidity and greed that did that.

As a South Carolinian, I am proud of what my governor is doing, and stand behind him 100%. I feel that this money is a big mistake. I refuse to allow the future pay for the mistakes of the past. Mr. Governor is say your right- return to sender!
Posted by: T. Trueman | March 14, 2009 2:00 AM
It's all show. Sanford knows the General Assembly will take the money. Clyburn added that provision with Sanford in mind. He can "stand on his principles" for 2012.
I agree with Sanford that the spending is a mistake. However, WE HAVE TO PAY THE MONEY BACK, WHETHER WE TAKE IT OR NOT. Therefore, we might as well take it.
Posted by: JimBeam | March 14, 2009 8:30 AM
Correct. They will cry foul and not take the money. Knowing, their State Assembly will take it for them. Give him the white towel and bowl? Anyone? Pontius Pilot has spoken!

Man, you people like to take shots at others and ignore facts.
Who's playing Politics when the DNC, their Politicians and loyal followers on this board, don't tell the truth. It's not a lie I guess it's just not telling the truth.
If you can read; Out of the $870 Billion Bill that no one read but voted on, Gov. Sanford said they expect to GET $2.8 Billion. They intend to SPEND $2.1 Billion, and not take the $700 million because of the Welfare strings attached by the Federal Government who didn't read what they voted on.
Answer 1 question? If it's a stimulus from the Federal Govt', using taxpayer money (that's you) why is Congress forcing States to make changes to their Laws/rules. With money the taxpayer money money collected from the State's sent to DC and let lying Politicians tell States how to accept their own taxpayer money.
Please get off the Political Bull S', and look at the facts. Not what DC says to you, "lordy, it must be true, because Washington DC said so". But at least listen to some people who have read the bill. You know that little 870 billion taxpayer money without interest voted on without DC reading it..

So what if there are guidelines for the unemployment insurance portion of the fed. money?
Who thinks a corrupt local good ole boy 'govmint' doesn't need oversight?
The strings do require third world states like the former antebellum states to upgrade their unemployment insurance laws to late 20th century standards.
Posted by: C.Morris✈ | March 15, 2009 12:30 PM
with unemployment already high and more people losing their jobs,SC has the worst system to help people who are hurting financially. They have no where to turn in emergancy situations.Gov. Sanford help your people! How can you look in the mirror and know how people in your state are hurting and doing nothing to help?
