First the Democrats call Rush Limbaugh "the voice of the Republican Party.'' Then the chairman of the Republican Party calls Limbaugh up to apologize for calling him an "entertainer.'' The Democrats are laughing all the way to the blood-sport bank.
Limbaugh is not "the bogeyman,' the chairman of the GOP says.
Just the "spokesman'' of the GOP, Democrats insist.
Credit Mike Allen of Politico.com for writing the newest installment in the saga of the GOP and for whom the party toils, Limbaugh?
Michael Steele, the Republican National Committee chairman, said this about radio's Rush in an interview with CNN host D.L. Hughley Saturday night: "Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh -- his whole thing is entertainment. He has this incendiary -- yes, it's ugly."
Today, Allen reports, Steele was putting it differently.
"My intent was not to go after Rush - I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh," Steele (pictured here in a photo by Brendan Smialowski/Getty Images) said in an interview. "I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. ... There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.''
Steele, who won his party's chairmanship after several ballots of split voting, is attempting to forge a consensus among the conservative base and the rest of the Republicans whom he says should not be cut out because they only agree on about 80 percent of the issues. Steele called on Limbaugh after his radio show today, after listening to his own comments about the commentator.
""I went back at that tape and I realized words that I said weren't what I was thinking," Steele told Politico. "It was one of those things where I thinking I was saying one thing, and it came out differently. What I was trying to say was a lot of people ... want to make Rush the scapegoat, the bogeyman, and he's not."
Not the bogeyman.
Tim Kaine, chairman of the DNC, issued his own statement tonight: "I was briefly encouraged by the courageous comments made my counterpart in the Republican Party over the weekend challenging Rush Limbaugh as the leader of the Republican Party and referring to his show as 'incendiary' and 'ugly.' However, Chairman Steele's reversal this evening and his apology to Limbaugh proves the unfortunate point that Limbaugh is the leading force behind the Republican Party, its politics and its obstruction of President Obama's agenda in Washington.''
Just Limbaugh the spokesman of the Republican Party, as Rahm Emanuel, the president's chief of staff, and other Democrats would like to have it. And for the record, while acknowledging that call-in surveys are no sort of poll, when the Tribune asked online readers of the Limbaugh versus Emanuel debate today if they think Limbaugh is the spokesman of the GOP, two-thirds voted yes.

Ha ha ha ha !!
It took Steele less than 24 hrs to kiss Mullah Limbaugh's ring.
I expect Cantor to be the next GOoPer to go begging for Druugy Rush's forgiveness, he basically said the same thing that Steele did yesterday.
Watching the Repuglican party implode makes for great entertainment.
Pass the Popcorn!

So much for Steele showing surprising backbone and guts in standing up to Rush.
This only proves that he is the all-powerful high priest of the GOP and its conservative base.

Lets face it, Limnaugh gets paid to rant and rave, not to affect policy and change. Steele was right the first time....like everyone on the left and the right whose only job is to peeve some people off and tell others with no minds of their own how to think the guy is an entertainer.

The Republicans have become the distilled essence of Republicanism. All the moderating influences have been cooked off. Any sense of responsibility to the country or to King George Bush which might leaven the party is gone. They are free to be themselves, and this is what we see.
The conservatives have painted the Republican party into an extremist corner, and as long as El Rushbo sits on his throne in that corner it's going to get pretty uncomfortable for any Republican not safely ensconced in a deep-red House district.
This is the logical conclusion of a "play to the base" strategy, which Karl Rove in his architecting days may not have foreseen. The base (the South) gets baser, and everybody else runs for their lives.

Nice tie, Mike.
Check out Rush's wardrobe malfunction at the Replican convention this weekend.
Black shirt.
Someone should tell Rush the black shirt sort of went out of style (in Italy at least) around 1945, when they hung up Il Duce with piano wire.

Rush Limbaugh for President!!!!
Michael Steele has a lot of learning to do. Why not send him back to grade school and get us a REAL chairman.
Posted by: Thom | March 2, 2009 8:02 PM
The Republican Party is currently the party that determines its conclusions, then cherry-picks facts, polls and opinions to 'prove' their case.
The rest of us are reality-based.
Which means...yes, Limbaugh is an entertainer. Period. That's what the rest of his family calls him, and they've known him all his life.
Posted by: Tom J | March 2, 2009 8:11 PM
The GOP never will come out looking good in the eyes of Democrats such as Mark Silva.
We all know that. We also know that the Left has got to always demonize someone, anyone--it's in their genes--and Limbaugh is merely this week's target.
Perhaps if Mr. Silva was a journalist, and didn't take his marching orders from the Obama White House, he might ask why a president of the United States (the alleged "healer') is demonizing opponents. A real journalist might even talk to Mr. Limbaugh, or hear his take on things. A real journalist might even see what Mr. Limbaughh has already posted on his website, for all to see but evidently hidden to Mr. Silva. A real journalist might .... but a partisan flak won't.
This MSM hit-job scenario will be played out dozens of times in the next 4 years. Conservatives have become used to it, and a little bored by it.

I love it! Steele uses the defense that I keep hearing time and again from Republicans. "Rush is just an entertainer. Yada yada yada." But he does it clumsily and backtracks. Hmm, could Rush and his camp have put pressure on Steele to retract his comments? Doesn't do much to dispel the argument that Rush Limbaugh is right now the most prominent voice of the GOP -- and the one most feared figure. This should be fun.
Posted by: P Reis | March 2, 2009 8:12 PM
Let's just call him the Grand Poobah, every Republican must kiss Limbaugh's ring and apologize profusely if they make the mistake of thinking and speaking for themselves. I'm loving how radio entertainer Rush Limbaugh has become the tail that wags the dog that is today's Republican party.
Posted by: Quippy | March 2, 2009 8:24 PM
When some of the Republicans wanted to work together with President Obama to build a united front to the economic problems, Rush panned them. They quickly rolled over for him. So now we have a pill popping, whore mongering loud mouth as the leader of the Republican Party. This is very sad. Goldwater, Reagan, Eisenhauer and many others must be looking down in shame.
Posted by: Saxxon Domela | March 2, 2009 8:26 PM
Limbaugh is an example of what is driving so many middle of the road people away from the republican party, including me.
I think he is the guy who said "I want Obama to fail". He would destroy this country, already reeling under the results of 8 years of Bush, as long as it keeps the right wing Bush republicans in power.
Back in 1929, our economy collapsed into the great depression, and it ushered in an 18 year reign of the democrats, with all kinds of social progress, including taking care of our elderly in their old age. If I were the republicans, I would trash Limbaugh, and the whole religious "right' who would make our country into a Christian Taliban theocracy. I would reach out to the middle class, if any of us are left there, and HELP Obama to save this nation from total economic collapse.. Then they could take some credit, become a centrist party, and have a fair share of input into the govt.
But the republican party, controlled by the superwealthy whose moral values are based on their God of Greed and total corruption, is destroying itself with its total intransigence. Ultimately Pres. Obama will stop reaching out to them, He will succeed, and be vindicated despite the costs of undoing republican catastrophe.
And over time, the republicans of George Bush and the religious right, which includes those whose forbears gave us slavery and segregation (as democrats long ago) will become totally disgraced and destroyed.
So be it. Steele has a terrible job - to tear down much of what he has inherited and rebuild it, or to let it die.
And the great majority of the nation will come to finally understand that George Bush, grandson of the Neo-nazi Prescott Bush, whose bank helped finance the rearmament of Germany in the 30s, has been America's greatest disaster, a fitting legacy.
Posted by: SteveMD2 | March 2, 2009 8:28 PM
Rush Limbaugh, the great big pumpkin leader of the Republican party is a fitting leader for the party of greed and feed. He says, "Republicans love people" but forgot to add as long as they don't want some of my money. If Obama is not for change, why is he hollering so loud and throwing a temper tantrum?! He's afraid and rightly so, that Obama is going to take some his money and use it to help educate our children, provide health care for those who can't afford it and buidl the infrastructure. Yes, it won't be politics as usual in Washington and that's what the Republicans want. Well, Obama will succeed because the people are really seeing that the Republican party is one of Greed. Rush, you're obviously greedy but Obama is going to take some of your money to help the American people and you should be happy because you "love" people.
If it's too painful why don't you dip into your stash of Oxycontin.

Ha ha ha ha ha ho ho ho ho....well that didn't take anytime at all for the x defacto head of the party to slobber up to ol' Rush. It's like throwing a ball to see who will dunk Rush next in the bucket....Cantor? Palin?... Mr.Jingles?...ha ha ha ha ha..........Maybe we should leave it to women..they always have more guts. Are there any republican woman who found his remark about ugly women and womans lib pffensive? Oh probably not....what are principles when it comes to politics. All hail Bloato....congrats...you're big time now....ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha h!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never listened to Rush much before this democratic non-sense but lately I've been listening to him a lot. I would rather die and roll over in my grave than stand for the tyranny Obama is thrusting upon the country. Obama - worst president ever.

GOP politicians have been traumatized by Rush Limbaugh into being his subjects, reduced into whimpering apologies to him should they dare to criticize him.
Posted by: Manuel Nunes | March 2, 2009 8:57 PM
Rush Limbaugh and Al-Qaeda both want Obama to fail. It's as simple as that. If you listen to Blimbaugh, you might as well translate a few tapes from Osama bin Laden and listen to them.
Posted by: Stuart Smalls | March 2, 2009 9:08 PM
LOL! Wasn't one of Rahm Emmanuals arguments basically saying the proof that Rush is the leader of the GOP is in the fact that whenever a big Republic player criticizes Limbaugh they immediately offer a lame apology?
Posted by: D. Novitsky | March 2, 2009 9:15 PM
The only good thing about Rush making these comments is it makes it easier to summarize the overall perspective of the Republican party. And it's a ridiculous perspective, laced with immaturity, sensationalism, and a lack of substance. See, I would listen to Republicans more if there were actual reasons and details behind their beliefs, not to mention an alternative to the stimulus plan. Which, if I recall correctly, was Bush's plan from the start.

Did anyone see the Black State of the Union over the weekend? I was watching in disbelief how Steele was finally making sense! The other panelists urged him to look for ways to work with the President to move forward. To find common ground and let the politics go.
I read his comments about Rush the following day and really thought he took the panel's message to heart.
Sadly, it seems he has not. Why? Republican first.

Are the fashion cops still too busy checking Michelle's latest dress?

While you're correct that your call-in or internet poll is not scientific, what results would you really expect from a city that has a democrat for a mayor, is the hometown of the sitting president, etc?
This whole issue of who is really the spokesman for the GOP is distracting. Doesn't the current administration more important things to worry about than what a talk show host has to say??? I mean afterall, they're screwing with the economy using methods that have not worked in the past. Has anyone been listening to the financial and economic experts in this country?

He is evil incarnate. Just like Cheney, Bush, Atwater, Rove, Colter, and many up and commers too. DO SOME HOMEWORK FOLKS! No wonder Rush recently signed a $400M contract. That's a lot of listeners that see through our empty suit leader of libs.
Best not take on Rush on the issues, your lying chief exec provides fresh fodder on a daily basis

When so many on the right are swept up in the desire to see Obama fail, it really makes no sense trying to rationalize anything when it comes to the economy. They will bark, they will bite, they will distort, and yes they will lie. Funny how the "bloated one" seems to be upset with obama and the doom and gloom.......holy cow!..just read the posts from the right. Trying to have any argument with them about the country is as hard as El Bloato trying to lose weight. Somehow I think Ronnie Raygun would be turning over in his grave at the thought of an ill mannered oaf as the head of the republican party.
Posted by: bill r. | March 2, 2009 10:27 PM
Dear SteveMD2,
You're not a "republican" who has left the party, you're a democratic sheep. Your not so blind hatred of Bush is evidence that you've become brainwashed by the democratic party.
Your allowing democratic spin to drive your hatred against all republicans, because from your perspective all republicans are just like Bush.
Well, let me tell you; we're not.
The latest garble coming from the WH is more of the same blame game. Now that Bush is gone, they need a new target to point their fingers at. That's all this story is. The WH is trying to place a face on the enemy because they know that half of their battle is won by keeping their constituents off of the fact(s) (zero confidence economy brought about by poor government from all sides and soaring unemployment).
If you're going to be worried about something, be worried about why our elected officials have allowed this mindless story to be the topic du jour. Look for what the media isn't telling you, and then ask yourself why. You might just see the makings of the shortest presidential honeymoon in the history of the USA, that's why.
The WH is trying desperately to keep the nation's eyes off what the real issues are, and this little stunt is completely transparent. The WH is out of options and they're just trying to take our minds off of where we're going (11~12% inflation rate and 15% unemployment by my SWAG).
For my part (and most republicans I know), I will continue to pray for the health of our nation and continue to support it, regardless of the current president's party affiliation.
Perhaps you should do the same.

Comrade Steele dutifully apologizes to the Grand Poobah Leader and offer his regrets to his fellow comrades in the movement. Re-education camp will follow shortly. This climb-down marks the end of establishment Republican resistance to the Poujadist pontificator.
It's Rush's party now. So why shouldn't he run for president in 2012? Make Palin his veep - and be done with it.

You folks said the surge in Iraq would fail. You folks said the war in Iraq was lost. You folks have talked down the economy for eight years -- even when the Dow was past the 14,000 mark.
Limbaugh wants Americans and the U. S. to succeed. He just wants Obama's socialism to fail. So do most intelligent-thinking folks.
Posted by: John D | March 2, 2009 10:54 PM
Funny how all the libs hang here in the swamp with all the non-stories while the real discussion about the way Barack is turning this country into a socialist state is full of concerned Americans that do not feel that the government is more qualified to spend their money on social programs.
You will see that by taxing everyone until incomes are the same, the final result will be stagnation of this country with mediocre service provided by the government. When everyone is entitled to the same quality, the quality will go down to a sustainable level.
I find it very hard to believe that the journalists are so into this concept. Their freedom will disappear down the road of this socialist trip we are on.
Best of luck getting out of this recession when all the "wealthy" stop spending their disposable income because they are afraid of the taxman. It is already happening.
Anyone with half a desire to continue the American experiment started over 200 years ago hopes that Barack fails in his attempts to turn this country upside down. If he succeeds, we'll all lose.

I also think it's hilarious how eager Republicans are to predict failure on Obama's part and piss and moan about it all. Especially after eight years of Bush in office and his many failures while in office, not to mention him spending two months on vacation.
And you know what? Even as a liberal, I really don't like Daley or Blagojevich. It's not a Democrat thing; it's an educated person thing. And as an educated person, I'm appalled the Republicans are so focused on watching the country crumble and burn just so they can say "See? I told you so!".
And I have to repeat myself: the stimulus plan was Bush's plan first. It's not an ideal plan, but in this economy, can you really rely on the banks and auto makers to just pick up the pace? Do you have any idea what would happen if they all fail and go bankrupt? If you don't, consider the subject of Michael Moore's "Roger and Me." Not the whole movie, just the subject.
Posted by: Michael | March 2, 2009 11:29 PM
Is the GOP so thin-skinned that Steele can't even state the obvious? Of course Limbaugh is incendiary and ugly. That's what sells talk radio/books. Ask Ann Coulter, Al Franken, et al. This has nothing to do with political affiliation This all about media pyromania. Start a fire then reap the financial benefits by fanning the flames. They are all morally bankrupt. Steele is a smart and capable guy. I'm disappointed to see him kowtow to that fat gasbag.

RUSH LIMBAUGH IS A STARK EXAMPLE OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF BLIND HATRED
Rush Limbaugh is a disgrace to humanity and Americans. If Democrats had said that they wished that our president failed in his invasion and occupation of Iraq, that would have been the same as wishing that our soldiers suffer the consequences of that failure by getting killed and or wounded. Republicans wishing that our president fails in his efforts to prevent America's financial collapse is the same as wishing that millions of American families lose their jobs, their homes and their ability to feed and clothe themselves and their children. Millions of Americans would become homeless and starving. Osama bin Laden is also wishing that our president fails, because he knows what that would do to the lives of millions of working class Americans.

Dems don't fear Limbaugh and Coulter - they represent a minority percent. They may have 20 million listeners, but like Howard Stern- they are entertainers, not elected officials. Those 20 million (while, maybe 5 million - just guessing) don't jump just because Rush says to.

Fortunately, the RNC will have little influence on those voters who will go to the polls to begin the process of pulling this nation away from those who would "remake" it into a Socialist state. Obama/Pelosi/Reid are sowing the seeds of their downfall by their own actions. They've gone too far too fast, and even the fools who elected Obama are beginning to see the calamity they produced. Watch the Obama approval polls as they continue to drop.

Read your hero W's secret legal opinions about wiretapping everyone before you start in on a lecture about Obama ending freedom.
As far as the recovery acts being enacted into law, go back and check out what Barack said in all those speechs he gave in the election campaign.
He won the election, and he is delivering what he promised.
If you don't like it, I suggest you find some candidate to run against him who has some chance of winning.
You won't be able to, because when the recovery acts have been implemented Obama will be viewed as the architect of the recovery.
Indeed, he'll be viewed as the savior of the country.
