For those who have been wondering when Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona might exact a certain price for the impact that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's candidacy for vice president had on his presidential chances, the answer is here:
"I'd like to see her compete,'' McCain said of the possibllty that Palin might seek the party's presidential nomination in 2012.
"We've got some very good candidates,'' McCain said in an appearance today on NBC News' Meet the Press. "There are so many -- there is a lot of fresh talent out there..''
But would he support Palin, NBC's David Gregory pressed.
"I'd have to see who the candidates are, and what the situation is at the time,'' said McCain, cautioning anyone against doubting his "respect, love and admiration for Sarah.''
While Palin initially proved wildly popular among the Republican Party's base, the nomination of the first-term governor and one-time mayor of tiny Wasilla became, for McCain, an increasing liability with each new national news interview of Palin, who revealed that she may not read very much about national affairs and ddn't know too much about foreign policy -- asking an interviewer, for instance, what he meant by "The Bush Doctrine.''
This was McCain's 54th appearance on Meet the Press, he was reminded -- and he is closing on the record 64 of Bob Dole, who also won the GOP's presidential nomination but failed at election. McCainl probably will have plenty of more opportunities to return, and talk more about how much he loves his erstwhile running mate.

I must wonder how the left-wing candidates would answer the "Bush Doctrine" question. . . or if they have quit beating their spouses.
Has been, never was, McCain would do well to kiss the hem of Palin's garment for the showing the Repubs made in the race.
Ask how many voted for the presidential candidate alone.

Reading the headline, I thought McCain had said something derogatory about Sara Palin. But reading the article, it's obvious that McCain didn't say anything bad at all about her. But the fact that the subject of her future came up merely gave an excuse for Mark Silva to editorialize against her.

LOL, his 'take a number' for his Miss Daisy is ROFLMAO material.
He's so oblivious to the world around him he probably hasn't bothered to watch and listen to her latest taped diatribe wherein she told hundreds of rapt fellow mouth breathers that there was no one on the
McCain campaign trail that she could hold hands with and pray for God's help to get her into our White House.
(She thought God's will would get her in the White House ...
we know she's not introspective nor intellectually skilled to recognize God's will kept her OUT of the White House)
She did omit to her minions that holding hands with her comes with the condition one would need a 36-hour long rape victim shower and years of therapy to clear out her "ick" factor.

Just another attempt to slander Palin. So tell us Mark Silva, what exactly is the Bush Doctrine? Oh yeah, you dont even know because it was a made up term by journalists.

With the headline, I thought it was going to be something bad too. That's what Limbaugh calls the 'drive-by media' where people just read headlines and think the worse and don't bother reading the whole article.
Why did they have to say 'one-time mayor'? It's a play of words to make the reader think she was a one-TERM mayor, but in fact, she held 2 terms. And you know how they have to emphasize on the "tiny" Wasilla. Yes, Wasilla was tiny, but like Palin said in her RNC speech when she was being attacked by the left-wingers, "A small-town mayor is like a community organizer except with actual responsibilities." =)

As a long time GOP voter, I am sorry to see that the Party is letting itself get high-jacked by the far right. Limbaugh, Hannity, Palin, etc.
This country is moving more to the center, because supporting the far right or far left has left this country with some big problems.
Conservative government spending for years will cost us many more billions, as this administration tries to rebuild, than if we had cared for our country earlier, by investing in it rather than Wall St.
-New Orleans washed away due to levees that we we knew were bad for decades, 1000 Americans dead.
-An interstate bridge falls into a River; 11 dead Americans, and over 1500 bridges are failing.
-An ice storm in KY and IL with 55 dead, as some seniors froze to death in their homes. It takes almost 6 weeks to restore power. No real power grids any more.
But, let's not leave a penny more debt to our heirs, just leave them a decaying infrastructure instead.
We will spend money for war and war profiteers before we spend on America first, why?. Rebuilding the US is not Socialism, it is the right thing to do! And it is way overdue!

What is the Bush Doctrine? Does David Gregory or any of the pundits or even Barack Obama know? There are at least four different respected interpretations of the Bush Doctrine. So how could Sarah Palin know what the smart people mean by the Bush Doctrine? Run, girl, run!

Why oh why or we discussing the race for presidency in 2012? Please, let's face the issues at hand for at least the first year or two. I personally am surprised that Sarah Palin is respected as a candidate. It is clear she lacks substance, although is full of color. Just because she was jumpstarted to national awareness, does not confirm her competence.
Posted by: bugsy | March 29, 2009 1:34 PM
No full endorsement, but McCain made nice comments about Palin.
McCain isn't the republican guru he failed to capture all republicans and independents.
It is funny that much of what McCain claimed/said during the election is now being parroted by Obama.
Posted by: Eric | March 29, 2009 1:38 PM
It's unlikely that "exacting a price" was the motivation for McCain's response to Gregory's question. At this moment there is no clear Republican standout for the 2012 race. McCain realizes that as do we all. For a politician, there's no sense putting all your eggs in one basket so early.

The"libracats" are still intimadated by Govenor Palin because she is much more qualified than the Obama dude who has never held a job or ran any organization of any kind other than a community activist group, and he is in so far over his head as president the only way he knows to how to handle the job is by president proclomation or blaming everything on Bush, three years from now he'll still be blaming Bush and still be as dumb and unquaified.

McCain and Palin deserved each other, and the Republicans deserved them.
Posted by: JLE | March 29, 2009 2:08 PM
I wonder how could anyone vote for S Palin for President? That would really be the icing on the cake...
Posted by: Glen W | March 29, 2009 2:11 PM
McCain's appearance definitely gives the liberal Tribune (oops, is the Trib still pretending they're conservative?) an opportunity to slant it against Sarah Palin. Worse, in my view was McCain's 'left-handed' endorsement of Mrs. Palin. After giving his candidacy its only real chance, he backhands Sarah by skipping the chance to say that he indeed would support her. In 2009 it really wouldn't be necessary to pre-nominate her, but perhaps it was just another example of McCain 'reaching across the aisle.' What he never bothers to admit is that when he reaches across the aisle, it's when he reaches toward republican or conservative ideals.

Well, McCain did not so much directly say anything negative about Palin; I think instead, and that's what makes this interesting, is that whenever questioned about his support for her or whether or not he personally thinks she should run, he skates around the question. Such a blatant inability to back up his former running mate is in itself an insult to Palin. I mean, he thought her qualified enough to be on his ticket right? Yet, he refuses to endorse her until "he sees the other candidates". If that's not enough to imply that "there are better people suited for the job; I'll only support her if there's no one better" then I don't know what is. That's a pretty negative comment, direct or not, if I ever heard one.
Posted by: cm | March 29, 2009 2:45 PM
Oh yeah, it is only Silva that thinks McCain is reluctant to endorse Palin. Read up a little...
Posted by: Goldenchic | March 29, 2009 2:46 PM
Narby: That is what is known as "media bias". The blogger wants his story read, so they sensationalize the headlines. Truly unfortunate when the media cannot be trusted. Palin was just as experienced as Obama was, but her PR was not as good. Period.

Good thing they didn't ask Obloated that question. He would have to wait for a teleprompt with the answers. I would take Palin anyday over the pork infested, Chicago Mobster style Dems in congress. All those wonderful lying, cheating Dems that now make up the administration.
The treasury who wants to dictate over private business, but reverses the rules about bonuses they already jnkew about..I duidn't think we could get any worse than Bush, but I was wrong. Now we have true pond scum in control.

Clearly Mark Silva and Frank James are infatuated with Sarah Palin. They love to mock her, put up photoshopped photos of her to demean her, and incite ridicule and mean-spirited conduct against her. This pathological schoolboy behavior would be pathetic if it weren't so dangerous because of the position they hold to negatively influence opinion about women in politics. We know you boys don't like girls except in the kitchen. We know a monkey reference gets you boys all worked up, because of course this nation that just elected a black President remains fundamentally racist. But bimbo and violence against women issues are never reported when it comes to Palin and Hillary because we have obviously moved beyond sexism. Silva and Frank - two men who never will get it. The reason McCain lost is the economic crisis, and McCain's foundering handling of it during the campaign. Period. Silva and James are helping to fuel the belief that no woman is ever going to be qualified to be elected President or Vice President. And for those in denial who say they would vote for a qualified female for President - name one, and then do something about it. Let the hateful remarks begin.

Palin, get in line. Not a bad title; just a fact of life.
Of course John McCain did not intend to "Dis" Sarah Palin (who he picked over other candidates who may have had better qualifications.) So people have said.
Now when John McCain was pressed to answer the question of whether he would support Sarah Palin for a president bid he was honest. Other well-known people want the job too. In other words just being a good Vice-Presidential candidate may not be the same as being a good Presidential candidate.
But what are the qualifications of Vice-President? In fact won't somebody tell us all what the Vice-President actually does?
I will try. The Vice-President in our history might have a job of doing virtually nothing. I think one recent Vice-President from Texas said the job, "wasn't worth a bucket of warm spit." The most important job of the Vice-President is to get the President elected. Period.
Smart politicians are going to pick the running mate who best helps them get elected. So in our political history there have been a lot of "strange bedfellows." Competence is secondary to helping the election.Early in our political history we actually tried competence by allowing the runner up in the election the post. That was found to be a bad idea.
So it foolish to believe that a Vice-Presidential candidate automatically would be someone's automatic choice for President. By the time the matter of succession might occur, the cabinet would be in place policy decided etc. Even a not very competent person could do well in that environment.
Think of Dan Quayle. Maybe not the sharpest tool in the shed, but smart enough to take advice and that is very smart indeed.
I imagine if Governor Palin does run and win the nomination she will pick a running mate to improve her electability, just like any other smart politician. Of course the best ticket might be the very reverse.
Unfortunately it seems that Governor Palin might have been a marginal Vice-Presidential candidate. Did she change anyone's mind into voting for John McCain. I know she changed some and also alienated others. If John McCain had picked someone else would he have won? One can but wonder.

Golly, much more interesting than McCain's comments about Sarah Palin is his claim that the GOP has lots of qualified candidates! Who might they be? Bobby Jindal? Mike Huckabee? Norm Coleman?
Posted by: athena | March 29, 2009 4:10 PM
There were only two reasons to vote for John McCain: Obama and Sarah.
Posted by: UnfrozenCavegirlBlogger | March 29, 2009 6:45 PM
Clearly Bemused is the one "infatuated" with Sarah. Every time her name is mentioned, Bemused shows up with her false claims of sexism, and obvious lack of knowledge of the world while making stupid remarks like "We know you boys don't like girls except in the kitchen." What world do you live in Bemused? Be glad you're not in Afghanistan.

Couric did every thing she could to slam her.The question of what she read was stupid. Alaska is part of the United States couric made it sound like it was a foriegn country. She look down her nose at Palin like she was better than her. I just don't see how.

Funny, flo. I always see you attacking me instead of defending women from attacks on this hate filled blog. Where were you with the photo shopped garbage. Or the rancid, demeaning attacks on women whenever Palin is mentioned. I don't always show up, but you certainly do to discredit any defense of women in politics, "flo." You kept saying you'd vote for a qualified woman for President - just "not this one." Name one, "flo." "Flo," huh? You sound like a woman-hating man dressed in drag.
Posted by: Bemused | March 29, 2009 10:18 PM
Bemused, as you should know, I would happily have voted for Hillary had she won the nomination. But Sarah's policies and qualifications certainly would not get my vote. So don't put words in my mouth.

Flo...You must know by now that even though we have stated we would have gladly voted for Hillary, that to bemused and her anger can only assume we hate her....maybe to her we hate women. However untrue this may be, she will never accept this. She will also never understand that we would not vote for a women.....just because she is a woman. How any PUMA thinks Palin is the answer is just absurd to me.

Fresh talent? I see absolutely no one in the GOP capable of successfully taking on Obama. Let's face it, the GOP has run out of ideas. I personally hope Palin does run because she's so extreme that it will guarantee a landslide second term victory for Obama!
Posted by: judith | March 30, 2009 2:11 PM
Anyone who supports Obama is a braindead media drone that believes anything they hear. Not even worth taking seriously, so far as I am concerned we have an unevolved ape in office. I can't wait in four years to have an actual person back in office. Yeah that is right, I said ape!
