Has the dust settled enough from the dust-up over Radio Rush Limbaugh's "I want Barack Obama to fail'' saga to determine who won?
In what the New York Daily News dubbed "an elephant-on-elephant slapfest,'' have either the self-anointed Limbaugh or Michael Steele, the elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, emerged as the voice of the GOP after Limbaugh lambasted the president and Steele dismissed Limbaugh as an "entertainer,'' only to later apologize for the affront to "Rushbo?"
And has the Obama White House succeeded in portraying the radio-man as the mouth of the Republican Party, which would seem to have been President Barack Obama's and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's desire from the start? These are no fools who have rushed into the debate with daytime radio.
Or, has Steele succeeded in "the Hip-hopification'' of the Republican Party,'' as Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report asks.
"It's an elephant-on-elephant slapfest - and the White House is likely loving every minute of it,'' the Daily News noted.
"Tuesday is Day Two of evaluating the great GOP debacle: big-mouth radio host Rush Limbaugh vs. the weak chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele,'' writes Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star editorial page columnist.
"For weeks now,'' writes the Washington Post's media watchman, Howard Kurtz, " El Rushbo has been riding a publicity wave, fueled by an unerring sense of showmanship and his bald-faced declaration that he wants President Obama to fail. The media, finding Limbaugh far more fascinating than Mitch McConnell or John Boehner, have staged endless debates over whether the radio talk show host is the new leader of the Republican Party.
"The conventional strategy in such cases is for the administration in power to avoid talking about a mere radio critic. That would elevate him to the level of the president. Which, it turns out, is exactly what the Obama team wants.''
Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro of NBC give air to a line that the DNC's Brad Woodhouse launched: "Backflips for Rush: Rush Limbaugh might not be the "voice and intellectual force" behind the Republican Party, as Rahm Emanuel asserted on Sunday. But this has become increasingly true: When Limbaugh says jump, Republican officials quickly respond, "How high?"
"Hold on! So who's really leading the Republican Party these days?,'' asks Black Entertainment Television. "This past weekend, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel insisted that Rush Limbaugh - the bombastic, liberal-baiting, Obama-hating shock jock - is the heart and soul of the conservative movement in America....
"But Michael Steele, the bona fide leader of the Republican Party, isn't feeling Limbaugh, or those responsible for crowning the radio host king of the right wing. "I'm the de facto leader of the Republican Party," Steele snapped to CNN on Sunday. "Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh's whole thing is entertainment. Yes, it is incendiary. Yes, it is ugly."
"Of course, the vociferous Limbaugh didn't take the comments in stride. Lashing back on his radio show Monday, he accused Steele of being in cahoots with the honchos of the opposition party - President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Steele seems like he's "obsessed with seeing to it President Obama succeeds," Limbaugh bellowed. "I frankly am stunned that the chairman of the Republican National Committee endorses such an agenda. I have to conclude that he does, because he attacks me for wanting it to fail."

the problem with rush is the fact he is rooting against the country. why should we listen to some one that has so many idea on how the country should be run when he is to selfish to run for office? he is a greedy as the ceo's n wallstreet. he tells s he not willing to take a pay cut. Obama , McCain, Palin, and Biden all have somthing in common...they are willing to put there lives to hold to better the country. they have diffrent ideas on the direction OUR country needs to go but they all want the country to be better of from there idea and are wiling to give up personal interest to help the greater good of us all. rush only wans his pay check to keep coming. he could care less about as a whole. whylisten to him and take any advice and idea from him. rush its time to put up or shut up. freedom of speech is a beautiful thing, he just uses it for a paycheck. so to the people out there defending him think about it. why listen to a person who is out there to only make money for himself. we dont care for telemarketors or greedy salesman but you take everything he says as facts. so ask yourself would u take advice from the next telemarketor that calls?

When the Republicans are done bitching at each other like pre-teen girls, they may notice there are some people in the country that have real problems. How did these guys lose again?

Obama's mentor Saul Alinsky's Handbook for Radicals outlines the techniques used by this administration to try and break any link between Rush Limbaugh's influence and the GOP. The president knows well that marginalizing and demonizing his strongest opponents could intimidate the fainthearted into supporting or withholding criticism of his policies... and increase his chances for success. It's basically a divide-and-conquer approach. It's obvious that the goal is to single Rush Limbaugh out, pick him off, and pull him away from influencing the GOP.
-
Where the Democrats are wrong is that every time they attack Limbaugh, his audience grows. Republicans can keep him at arm's length, as Cantor is doing, while enjoying all the benefits of Rush's daily assault on Obama's character, policies, and judgement.
-
And I love how these Democrat hypocrites are condescendingly referring to Limbaugh as an "entertainer"... please.
-
Yeah, he IS and "entertainer"... and an influental one, who became highly successful in the free market- because millions of people want to hear what he has to say. And a lot of conservatives are glad he's around, because a lot of it needs to be said... when nobody else in the party is saying it.
-
I don't listen to the show actually, but you don't see the GOP putting him in the Senate, do you? Or any office whatsoever?
-
Just compare that to Al Franken... has Obama forgot all about that, already?
-
Franken's radio show was a flop because few wanted to hear his boring anti-American drivel, but when that became futile, the DNC put this bozo on the ballot for Senator- good grief.
-
And they'd have done the same for Chris "Tingle" Matthews if the polls wouldn't have revealed widespread revulsion at the thought.
-
Has that Franken done anything in his life other than "entertainer" and author... same as Limbaugh?
-
So, a failed entertainer is OK for Senator... but a successful one (who is a major threat to Obama, apparently) isn't allowed to even have influence on his own political party?
-
Limbaugh and the GOP would be well-advised to ignore these malicious hypocrites, don't take the bait and play their game. Obama looks desperate going after Limbaugh, so just let him go down with his ill-advised policies... shouldn't take long.

Wow. Democrat Mark Silva consults other Democrats (Washington Post, NBC, Black Entertainment TV, et al.) about a "controversy" that Democrats in and outside the media stirred up, and concludes that--a Democrat is doing well!
I'd urge conservatives not to respond further to Silva's Limbaugh postings. He's just trying to gin up the numbers for a blog nobody reads, by waving a red flag to Leftist bloggers. The Swamp is in fact just another Left wing blog, sponsored by a bankrupt newspaper.

I find it funny that the party that spent the last 8 years calling everyone who didn't agree with them "un-American" or "Traiters" is now rooting for the downfall of America.

Let’s take a step back, simplify and clarify a few things. rush said the remarks more then once, he has repeated them and also clarified what he means. He wants Obama’s plans and ideas to fail. He does no want more taxes on him and his cronies. rush is not worried about our economy, he told Barbra Walters that he chooses not to participate in the Recession. That’s because he a millionaire. he makes more money for sitting behind that “GOLDEN EIB MICROPHONE” than any one man needs. He is eating surf and turf while the people who listen to him eat fish and chips from Long John Silvers. So if Obama fails and the economy worsens, rush still makes his 30+ million a year. Obama Plugs the leaks and repair the sinking ship Rush gets a tax increase. I am really hoping people see why rush wants Obama to fail. Now let’s throw in another curve ball. If rush is the Messiah!!! Then why doesn’t he run for office? Is he afraid of loosing? I think not. Is he worried that people might realize he is blowing hot air? Not that either, rush already knows that we know. Or maybe because he is too worried about HIMSELF and HIS pocket!!! Winner Winner, chicken dinner… rush will tell you himself, he’s said it countless times on his show, “I WONT TAKE THE PAY CUT”. Let that one sink in. The person that so many people are defending is not willing to go to bat for them. He won’t take the pay cut to help out his country. He has so much to say about what’s wrong with OUR country, but no pride to make the changes himself. rush limbaugh is no different from the CEO’s on wall street, in putting themselves before their country.
Thank you for your dedication to the people rush!

.....Why do So many people find it hard to believe Limbaugh (& others) want Socialism to fail…… I have yet to hear Limbaugh say he wanted the Stimulus (such as it is) to fail (I have yet to hear our Grand Illustrious Media make this distinction). Is it possible so many have interpreted Limbaugh’s comments as they have due to the Media coverage.
................Some say that Socialism is like a ‘four wheel drive’ — It just gets you farther ‘off’ the road before it gets you stuck. Young people are especially prone to the Romantics of Socialism till they see it Fail (the Soviets tried it for 70 years w/o ever making a decent society — too bad so many present day voting youngsters missed that, or just didn’t see it for long enough; or pay enough attention).
................If the Stimulus had been true Stimulus Limbaugh’s comments might have been diffirent…
................Isn’t it interesting how the Media keeps calling it a Stimulus Bill (Wall Street didn’t think so) even though it is at least 50% a Spending Bill (more of their subtle, or not so subtle Repetitious Indoctrination).
..................For this bill to have truly been a Stimulus Bill it needed to be at least 70% Stimulus, and if Obum had been true to his word it would have been 90% Stimulus – Real Change or just “Change you can Xerox”.
.................Half of the spending (if not more) will become long term Social Programmies (many of which the Demi-Dems had been frothing at the mouth over for years). Short term spending is what is Real Stimulus, not stuff spent over 2-3 years or more (if not in Perpetuity).
...................Why does the Media not explain this clearly, over & over, in depth so that it becomes part of the Public Consciousness like they did with Dick Cheney’s hunting accident (which in NO way affected National or International Policy).
Posted by: Da Truth | March 3, 2009 3:52 PM
Brian,
You did not listen to Rush or at least pay attention. Most likely, your opinion is based on someone else’s assessment of what he said. Rush said he WANTS THE COUNTRY TO SUCCEED and for that to happen, Obama's plan has to fail. No country has ever taxed itself out of a recession. Bush screwed up a number of ways. The last time was when he started bailing out the banks. That started the line of businesses at the Whitehouse door. They should have been left to fail for practicing lousy business ethics/models. There are enough good businesses out there doing the right thing to take their place. It would have hurt more in the short term but would have left us with stronger, smarter businesses in the end.

This is such a weak azz argument. You call it socialist.....therefore you are a proud American to stand up to it. Once again the dittos wrap themselves in a flag to show how patriotic they are. It's Rush's party now. So why shouldn't he run for president in 2012? Make Palin his veep - and be done with it.

What's really dangerous to the left about Rush that most people don't realize is that they discover how wrongly he's portrayed if they take enough time to listen to his words instead of accepting others words about him as fact.

The democratic strategy: get republicans to talk about republicans, so the public will ignore everything else that is going on.
Rahm's strategy solidified republicans. Made them unify.
Next election Obama is OUT!
And it is necessary to elect republicans at all levels of government for democrats TAX at the local level, at the state level and OFCOURSE at the federal level.
Vote for republicans to balance out the Congress.
Things are going to get worse economically. Be prepared. Your taxes are going up (for those that DO pay taxes).
Focus on what the democrats are passing.
Rahm Emanuel made $18,000,000 through investments after he left the Clinton White House.
Now, Rahm, Obama, Pelosi could careless about your investments.
Obama is not worried about those invested he is worried about those who don't pay taxes. That is where his focus is.
Obama thinks that the bottom is going to move up. That will not happen. People who have no financial savvy will continue creating debt for themselves.
Let's remember part of this stimulus bill is to pay down the debt incurred by credit charges.
Raising people from the bottom doesn't teach them about careful spending.
Angry about paying other people's credit card purchases off.
BOO to Obama!

Limbaugh and his party are deathly afraid that the Democrat's Stimulus bill will be successful. That's why he is doing everything he can to prevent it from happening. The cries of "socialism" are just a smokescreen to fire up his followers. If the Stimulus Bill does what it is supposed to do it will mean that Democrats are right and Republicans are wrong.

The Only Person Less Popular than GW Bush is Druggy Rush and the 2009 Republican party.
The Obama people are frakking brilliant. Really, they spent 3 years running against GW Bush's unpopularity, destroyed the GOP at the polls with it, and then found the one GOP "leader" even less popular, and with higher negatives: Rush Limbaugh.
Total props to the GOP for playing along too. It's going so well you'd think they secretly want to lose.

Anytime a President or one of his mouthpieces attacks a private individual - who is not a politician, the President loses.
Why? Because Obama has now elevated Rush to a position as Obama's equal. There was nothing Rush could do himself to attain that status.
Considering Rush has had very little effect on the election of any political candidate over the course of his radio show, Obama has made a very serious mistake; one that he will very likely regret.

Ah, the lefties, so little said by so many for the tanker. Give these failed policies another 3-4 months, as people's 401Ks and pensions bomb, retires lose their income, and the nanny state marches forward paid for with hard working Americans, while BO riles against the private sector and straw men fat cats, continuing to blame Bush (not!). This country will turn against his big socialist government with a vengeance. What, no stories on poll number dropping? The stealth massive carbon tax will be the last straw when the facts come out and the deceived middle class understand the truth. Bye-bye.

Limbaugh did everything in his power to prevent McCain from being the nominee and failed. He is out of touch with the mainstream supporters of the Republican party, not to mention the mainstream citizens of the United States. But Limbaugh said he wanted McCain to lose if he was the nominee and he did, with Limbaugh's help, so he is not completely inconsequential. He holds sway over the hearts, minds and pocketbooks of about 20-30% of the strong Republican party supporters out there. Unfortunately it is much better for Rush if the party loses and he is left as the voice to complain about it.
Posted by: AndyShep | March 4, 2009 7:56 AM
Hazmet,
There is lots of conventional wisdom to support your posit, and you may be right.
But, todays politics are nothing, if not dynamic.
Kerry's campaign proved you can't stand by a let yourself be attacked repeatedly without responding.
In the old days the press may have provided a counter-truth, but with the demise of the Fairness Doctrine, press consolidation, and general cowardice on their part, direct reply may be the only solution.
And, I am still waiting for a quote or link to some Dem. congressman, or a liberal poster here at the Swamp that said 'I hope Bush fails'.
The Cons have repeatedly said it, but can't prove it. On the other hand Rush has said it re. Obama loud and clear.

Obama elevated Rush to an equal level and that fact alone makes Rush's argument all the more persuasive.
The nonthinkers on the left have to resort to name calling because they are so tanked on Obama, they may be living off of the methane being expelled at the White House.

"Obama elevated Rush to an equal level "
Your comment has some merit.
But Rush and Republicans are coming out way way on the short end of the stick.
Rush wants Obama to fail. He said it.
Americans know that means more bankruptcy, lost jobs, homes, families.

Rush IS the leader of the Republican party. But that's the problem. The Republicans need to get back in touch with America and put forward a positive agenda. I don't agree with half of what Obama wants to accomplish, but I'm also turned off by the Republican's knee-jerk negativity and the divisiveness of their comments.
