Meghan McCain put her two cents into the cable babble discussion on the "Democratic plot," as Rep. John Boehner calls it, of a second stimulus package, telling Fox & Friends this morning that it would be a "disaster."
But last night, during what McCain Twittered was a "fun, provocative interview" with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow ("P.S. she's got great style..." continued the Tweet), McCain confessed she doesn't know much about the economy.
McCain: Spending freeze? You know, econ - economic things, I said this last night on Hannity, I said is my -- I didn't even take econ in college. I don't completely understand it so I'd hate to make a comment one way or the other. That's - truly of all the things - I keep reading and I just don't understand it.
Like father like daughter. During his presidential campaign, John McCain's assertion that "the fundamentals of the economy were strong" was used to paint the Arizona senator as out of touch from Wall Street to Main Street.
Maddow reassured McCain that she wouldn't press her on the issue, saying, "You're not here to be the economist-in-chief." Perhaps if McCain had appeared instead on Jim Cramer's MSNBC show - lately slammed by The Daily Show's Jon Stewart for his pumping of Bear Stearns just days before the stock tanked - he could have given her a run for her money.

Comments
Meghan McCain is one of the only sane Republicans that I've heard from lately. Her dad should listen to her more often.
Republicans need to quit listening to batsh*t crazy ideologes like Druggy Rush, Coltergeist, Drudge and Faux Noise etc or they're going to be relegated to a very small minority status for years and years to come.

Like father, like daughter.
Would it hurt any of the McCains to maybe read some books? Maybe open a newspaper?

Memo to the Obama White House: Rebecca Cole is worth every penny you're paying her!

Don't worry about it, Meghan....
You probably know more about economics than Grampy does:

I'm sure continuing to demagogue John McCain and his children will get us out of this economic mess. Great job, media.

p.s. Not having taken econ means Meghan only knows a little bit more than Obama about the economy...

I understand Meghan took some shots at Ann Coulter in her blog. It's nice to know there's a person right of center (besides my 85 yr. old mother) with the guts to do so.

Jeff - I'm sincerely curious where you see a "demagoging" here. The reporter writes matter-of-factly about the fact that Megan McCain went on two shows and said things that contradict each other: On Rachel Maddow she says she doesn't want to comment on ecomomics because she doesn't feel qualfied, but on Fox News she makes a judgement on ecomomics after all. Do you see a spin there? I see only the bare bones facts.
And please note the fact that she must have gone on these shows by her own will - no one forced her into the spotlight or forced her to say something she didn't want to.
I also find it odd - did she feel she could only comment negatively on Obama's economic proposals on Fox News, and not on Rachel (presumably because the former is conservative, and the latter liberal)? But if so, why? Rachel explicitly and without hesitation or complaint eschewed further questioning when she indicated she didn't want to say anything about this topic.

If that were Meaghan Clinton, Meaghan Gore or Meaghan Kerry in an interview on Fox, she would have been crucified by the right.
Maddow, realizing the embarrassment her question is causing her guest, handles it like a pro.
And you fools continue to cry about the so-called liberal media.

John McCain knows volumes about the economy and financial matters, and has years of experience being on Senate committees dealing with budgetary issues. His daughter may not have that kind of experience yet, but whatever she learned from her father is certainly correct. God help us survive the financial wizardry of the current administration!

The tape of Cramer touting Bear Stearns was humorous. I do not expect him to be perfect but he speaks as if he never makes a mistake. There he was making a foolish remark, foolish because of how serious he takes himself.

Look for Ann to go even more Man.
Leather outfits,
Provocative epithets directed toward leading member of the Administration.
[Ann, babe, that old "fag" line just doesn't cut it any more.]
As she and the others in her MCC are increasingly marginalized by reality, she'll really have to get some new schtick, won't she?
Maybe pose on her Harley for Hustler Magazine?
Ann, those pies you ordered, did you want banana creme or lemon merangue??

Jeff- It's going to take more than demagoging grandpa McCain to get us out of the economic mess created by George Bush and the rubberstamp Republican Congress. It was quite ignorant for McCain to state he doesn't understand economic principles. I wonder what your shallow comments would be if Chelsea Clinton said she didn't understand economics.

Candia, why is it a story at all? A LOT more important stuff happened yesterday in Washington than a young woman who holds no public office and who didn't study economics saying she didn't know that much about it on a television talk show! Frank James is supposedly a journalist, but seems to function more as a full-time PR arm of the DNC.
There's STILL been no swamp story about the earmarking scandal involving Congressman Mollohan or the Obama CTO appointee whose office was raided by the FBI.
Don't you think a congressman under investigation for kickbacks or a recent appointee's office being raided by the FBI are more important than ANYTHING Meghan McCain said in New York on Rachel Maddow's show? Just maybe, even?
But there seems to plenty of time to talk about Jon Stewart, Jim Cramer, Meghan McCain and other people who hold no office and are doing nothing but promoting themselves to Frank.
I long ago canceled my subscription to the Tribune because of the dumbing down of the news it began engaging in in the early 2000s, but I still enjoyed reading the stuff from Washington to keep informed. Now it looks like the one last bastion of good Tribune reporting left with Jeff Zeleny. Face it, the swamp is now the washington version of RedEye. I don't subscribe to people magazine for the same reason.
But don't let me bother you, please get back to your very important conversation about Jim Cramer, Jon Stewart and Meghan McCain, I'm sure that will fix all our problems.

Good point, Why not do an article on Chelsea Clinton, and ask her about economics, her time at the White House with ALL of it's situations etc.....
Posted by: PG | March 13, 2009 12:06 PM
Doug, the same as my "shallow" comments on Bristol Palin and other comments about non-elected offspring of politicians: That it shouldn't be news. I've NEVER attacked anything Chelsea Clinton or any other democrat's kids have done or said.
John McCain knows more than Obama ever will about our economy and we're going to unfortunately have to bear the brunt of that inexperience for at least the next four years. I'm hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, like millions of americans.

Jeff: Considering that the republican party doesn't have a real spokesperson, Meghan McCain will have to do. She is the only one ignorant enough to appear on live TV to tell us that she knows nothing. I haven't seen Bobby Jindal making any more political moves since his speech following Obama's tanked miserably. Palin has resigned, doing AK a big favor and the country an even bigger one. And Schwartzenneger is turning into a radical in the oppions of the RNC by promoting the legalization of marijuana. The only remaining visible parts of the republican party are Rush, Hannity, and Colter. Democrats are giggly with joy that Meghan McCain is the most intelligent and visible personality that the GOP can produce to further it's agenda, and that's not saying much. And she's not just the offsrping of an elected official. She put her hat into the ring by becoming a blogger that blogs about what she does not know. Her opposisiton has no choice but to discredit what she says, afterall she is making HERSELF the voice of that party. Obviously this isn't the biggest news story to hit the airwaves, but some of us read more than just the headlines and can handle thinking about more than one issue at a time. It would be irresponsible to not pay heed to anybody who makes political assertions on behalf of her readers, even if they can't figure out what to say or not say. I guess it's just a sad day for the RNC to see their poster-girl with a familiar name turned into Ms South Carolina.
