Why did Republicans lose the White House and congressional seats in the 2008 elections?

Iraq war? Poor economy? Government's response to Katrina? Republican scandals? Republicans acted like Democrats?

Liberal media?

This is not a test - this is part of Michael Steele's survey on the "State of the Republican Party.''

Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, maintains that he is looking for change - "not a change of our core values, but real change of how we go about listening to our supporters, how we communicate our message to all Americans and how we organize and win elections....

"Successful campaigns cannot be run from a building in Washington,'' the chairman says in an email to supporters. "The strength of our party comes from people like you who believe in our values and ideals and promote them in their communities.''

So Steele is taking a little online survey on the State of the Republican Party, with an attempt to encapsulate what his party's people are thinking these days.

He's also looking for some other change as well: Asking that no one "sugarcoat'' their responses to the party survey, but tell it like it is -- and, when they are finished with the survey, "please make a secure online contribution of $1,000, $500, $100, $50, or $25 to help move our Party forward and elect more Republicans in the 2009 state and 2010 congressional elections.''

It's a turn on the old penny ($1,000) for (with) your thoughts.

Answer: Lots of reasons, of which the Liberal media is the biggest reason. If Mark Silva (aka "the Liberal media") ever talked to a Republican, he would know how Republicans would answer this question.

If......

I agree with Palin on this. Defeat came because they didn't pray together.

Dismal!!! That's the state of the Repub party. Did anyone see that ridiculous interview he gave where he said, "no, no, I meant to do that."? Trying to make himself look good after the fact. With friends like him, the Repubs don't need enemies. First he says women have the right to choose (Duh!), then, no the choice is up to the states -- huh? Does he know what he's saying before it comes out of his mouth? And comments like Fred Thompson made about wanting the President's policies to fail are part of the reason they'll never come into the light again. You don't think the American people will be turned off by that nonsense when we are facing so many problems? They will forever be viewed as a not very important party being run by a fringe group of right-wing extremists (conservatives). They put us in the mess in the first place and now they're concerned about the deficit?! And Michael Steele is a very dishonest person. When he was running for the Maryland senate seat a couple years agowhich he lost, he hired homeless people from Philly to come and hand out his dishonest flyers that implied he had the support of democrats, which he didn't. He also put out bumper stickers that read, "Steele - Democrat." He couldn't even give his true party affiliation or he wouldn't get any votes. What a lying hypocrite. And that's who the Repubs put in as their chairman. You might as well change your name to the Lying Hypocrite Party. Pathetic.

The reason for Repubs failures - is people like "Dissent", Paolo, Jeff, Jerry White etc,,, who refuses to evaluate the GOP strategy and just blame others.

That's like the Cubs just blaming the Dodgers on why they lost but not looking at what they need to do to improve their team and their approach to the game. Repubs think blame results in self-improvement,,,,, it doesn't.

Yuk, yuk, yuk !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Mark, are you proud that your columns attract 6th-grade intellects (such as "gus" and "nancy") with their 6th-grade "liar, liar, pants on fire" style name-calling?

Explain, please, how those comments are different from your comment here, ex-Dem.

Repubs lost because the general populace is completely ignorant as to basic Economics 101... and our Country as a whole has become a nation of gimme, gimme, gimme... it's not fair that I don't have what he/she has.....

Great comment "Proud Conservative." The way to start winning elections again is to call the voters ignorant?? And I suppose you thought the Republican ticket was real sharp on economics expertise. Who is ignorant?

GOP lost for 1) trying to act like democrats and 2) their scandals (which I guess would also be acting like democrats).
.
As bad the GOP Congress behaved the past few years, the democrats will spend more and spend it quicker. The ONLY hope is the GOP might have learned a lesson. Otherwise the country is on the fast track to bankruptcy since we know the dems won't slow down the spending train.

To Proud Conservative: Please cite one example of an ordinary person claiming that it wasn't fair that someone had more than they had. The only people I've heard saying "It's not fair" are rich people who are being asked to pay an appropriate share of the taxes.

Ricky,
.
Ordinary folks generally don't get quoted, but have you listened to any of the democratic leaders. Remember, what BO said to Joe the Plumber

The GOP lost because their stated ideas are not supported by a majority of Americans. While this had been true in previous elections, it has become impossible, in the last few election cycles, for the GOP to scare folks into voting against their own interests and principles.

The GOP lost because they brought this country to its knees giving 99% of the nation's wealth to the Rich, corruption, greed, power, scandals, lies, distractions, suing 9/11 even today for self interest ignoring the pain of families, trying to prevent Americans from getting healthcare when we pay for theirs, refusing to give ordinary Americans an increase in minimum wage for 8 years, failure to provide our troops with the equipment they needed/body aurmor, failure to provide adequate medical care for injured troops including PTSD, failure to vote to give Women Equal Pay, Katrina failure for days while Republicans sat on the sidelnes and many died, and so on and so on.

Since Mr. Steel Has to ask, the party has even bigger problems!

lol, you poor libs, you can't even enjoy your victory because you're so addicted to hatred. Proceed, and enjoy.

The GOP has lost and will contiue to lose because most (obviously) Americans see them as totally incompetent when it comes to governing for the people. Now if corporations were the only entities(sp?) allowed to vote then the party "of the wealthy, and for the wealthy", would still be winning elections. Part of the problem recently, is they no longer control the entire message machine. T.V. radio and newsprint used to be the sole delivery of info. Now, with the wide use of the free internet they have too hard of a time stifeling the truth. It's harder now for them to use misinformation. Too many watch dogs out there now. Good for a true Democracy, bad for the GOP.
