Michelle Obama departs Tuesday for her inaugural European trip as First Lady, joining husband Barack as he makes the rounds during the G-20 summit in London.

With much ink already spilt over the first lady's style - Those arms! She wears J-Crew! - comparisons to Jackie Kennedy's iconic fashion and her success on the world stage are inevitable.

An article in Politico today has a good overview of the facts, but we decided to take our own informal poll and see how the two stack up.

Obama: Arms
Jackie: Long white gloves
Winner: Tie

We've judged this one a tie. Why? Because Jackie had a set of pretty nice arms as well, and showed them off nearly as much as Obama does, with sleeveless ball gowns and A-line dresses. But she managed to stay within the bounds of early 1960s-era propriety by covering up nearly to her elbows.

Don't believe us? This HuffPost slideshow of Jackie Kennedy should refresh our collective memory:

Obama's arms have certainly garnered a lot of attention, both positive and negative, but we say if you've got 'em, use 'em! (Although maybe not in the White House kitchen -- brr.)

(White House photo of the first lady by Pete Souza)

Obama: Curve-enhancing, waist-cinching belt
Jackie: Pillbox hat
Winner: Jackie

Although Obama's waist-cinch trick does a great job showing off her curves and long legs, she can't win this one. The enduring image our nation has of Jackie is in that bloodstained pink suit and pink pillbox hat, cradling President Kennedy after he was shot in Dallas. Although she sported them throughout her time in the White House, that's the image we remember.

Obama: Bouffant bob
Jackie: Bouffant bob
Winner: Tie

What can we say? They look practically alike in the hair department.

Obama: J-Crew separates
Jackie: Jodphers
Winner: Obama

Do people, other than the horsey set that hang around Camilla and Prince Charles, even know what jodphers are anymore? Although they did make a brief (thank goodness) comeback a few years ago on the runway, Obama's casual and colorful first-mom ensembles are here to stay.

As President Kennedy admitted during one state visit to France, where the people adored Jackie, he was just the sideshow - "the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris."

Will Obama have the same effect, overshadowing her husband as he tries to soothe world fears over the economy and global finger-pointing at the mess that Wall Street wrought?

President Obama can only hope.

Does Michelle know French? Jackie was fluent. She even studied at the Sorbonne during her junior year in college. It is one of the reasons that JFK referred to himself “the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris” during their 1961 visit to Europe.

Seeing Michelle encouraging young girls, or watching her with Alice Waters turn the dirt on the White House lawn for a vegetable garden, or watching her talk in front of groups, she seems like she was born to represent us on the world stage.

Michelle knew how to get her hospital a seven figure gov't stimulus and herself a nice pay raise. Something Jackie never did.

The first lady is traveling to Europe with an entourage of 8--all on the taxpayers' dime.

Jackie O never soaked the taxpayer that much.....

Enough with the Kennedy-Obama comparisons!!!

Michelle is beautiful and well spoken, Laura Bush was a stepford wife who was tanked up on tranquilizers most of the time....

After so many years of feeling that politicians were completely out of touch with reality (Bush/Cheney), this magical couple, the Obama's, prove to us that this country we live in has hidden magic in the children of broken homes, in the underclass, in the inner city, if we could only somehow give them the opportunities and hope that Barack and Michelle received.

Yes...there's nothing like a Stepford wife.

Please do not criticize Michelle. She is beautiful and intelligent. She is an everywoman. If only all women could be like her, this world would be a better place. I am as proud of her as I am of this great country. She sends a tingle down my leg every time I see her. You go girl!

Michelle Obama is a role model for black women, not hispanic women, not asian women, not white women.

Stop the written adulation. It won't influence the public. As a matter of fact, it is becoming too predictable as to what an article will say about Michelle.

Stop with the "arm" stories. Is that all she is worth? Paragraphs on her arms and her clothing choices.

Stefford wives - I see the head loon got the talking points out to all the little drones

Speak for yourself, Teresa. You're radical rightwing sociopath and your kind are in the minority now because you DON'T speak for everyone.

Michelle is NOT just a role model for black women, you racist.

Sorry, but I'd have to disagree with you. Of course she is primarily a role model for African American women, but she is also a role model for ALL women. She came from modest means, worked her tail off, got into a good school and made something of herself before she even met Barack Obama. That is something we can all aspire to and admire.

Ohdeargawd not the Blackie-O again..........

Pres. Obama can only hope? That Michele will be idolized by Europeans. Let's wait and see. My big prediction...NAH!

Comments like the ones from John W and Terry make me think they really hate women.

Please stop with the "Camelot" comparisons. That was 50 years ago and no matter when you grew up you either had a mama who taught you manners or you didn't. Both exhibit style and grace and both are educated women. Both should be respected in their own right and in their own time.

What??????? I guess a bigot can only be a role model for another bigot.

Lochness,
.
What I stated was pure fact. Her husband became a US Senate, her employer gets a seven figure grant and then she gets a huge promotion. Facts!!! Nothing to do w/ hating woman, just facts.

No John, Michelle was not raised as a member of the privledged elite like Jackie Bouvier. She couldn't afford to spennd a year at the Sorbonne on mommy and daddies dime.

I know it bothers follks like you that Michelle didn't recognize her place, and rose above her assigned station. I know that many people like you worship the trust fund east coast elite and could never acknowledge that a woman from a more humble background like Michelle could ever be their equal.

Unfortunately for you, the world has passed by people with outdated snobbish attitudes like yours. Learn to live with it.

Whitney Young, you've completely missed the point.

Many MANY women more worthy of respect have earned it. Marrying someone isn't an accomplishment.

Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't realize that Michelle Obama came out of the Chicago Public schools, got into Princeton, Harvard Law, and got a position at a prestigious law firm, all because she married Barack Obama. I didn't realize marrying him negated her own accomplishments after that time. That's right, married women, are just a reflection of their husbands. Nothing to admire about them at all. I stand corrected. Michelle clearly earned nothing by her own skills, hard work and determination. Thanks for clearing that up for all of us. Now go findyourself a nice man so that your accomplishments will be meaningless too.

Actually Whitney....I think this sums it all up with Cavegirl.

Okay, Whitney, since when does learning French or any other foreign language require growing up in a privileged class? The answer: It doesn’t. Foreign languages are taught in many public schools and most colleges. I know a lot of working stiffs who are bi-lingual. My mother, who had little better than a high school education, could speak five languages fluently. (Although she had to in her particular circumstances.) The question I asked about Michelle Obama’s language abilities was a fair one because the thread was about comparing her to Jackie Kennedy, and Jackie Kennedy was bi-lingual.
.
Your assumptions that I view all of this as a class issue, and/or that Michelle Obama is “unworthy” and above her station because she did not come from an east coast, trust fund type, elite family are all FALSE. I am not a snob. What I would like to know, however, is: What label you would apply to someone like yourself who jumps to outrageously incorrect and mean spirited assumptions about other people?

Oh, sorry John W, was I unfairly making assumptions about you while you were unfairly attacking the First Lady for not attending the Sorbonne? I guess higher standards apply to you than you apply to yourself.

By the way, yes, she did study French at Princeton. Is that good enough for you?

Whitney:
.
I wasn’t attacking Michelle Obama for not attending the Sorbonne. I was merely making a positive observation about Jackie Kennedy when I mentioned that she attended the Sorbonne in her junior year of college. You know, like, “Yay, Jackie!” Not all distinctions drawn between people are intended to be negative comments.
.
And then you wrote: “By the way, yes, she did study French at Princeton. Is that good enough for you?”
.
Yes, it is. That’s wonderful. That actually makes her more favorably comparable to Jackie.

Monster,
.
I keep forgetting: Does your brain work full-time or only part-time? Nothing I said could remotely be construed as a negative comment against women. The subject matter was a comparison between Michelle O and Jackie O. I was drawing people’s attention to a positive feature of Jackie Kennedy. How could that possibly be hateful toward women?
.
The answer is: It can’t. But it wasn’t what I wrote that made you think it was hateful. Instead, it was all of the biases and assumptions you carry around with you that made you think it was intended to be hateful in some manner. It’s people like you that make me begin to wonder whether or not I still live on the same planet on which I was born. Plain English never seems to carry the same meaning to anyone any more - because of everything that gets read into the words.

Thankfully you don't live on the same planet you were born on. You live on a planet where a black man can be President of the United Sates. You live on a planet where most people view women as fully equal to men. You live on a planet where the white anglo-saxon Protestant male isn't the only demographic that matters.

I think we should all be thankfull that none of us live on that planet anymore. I think we should all be thankfull to live on a planet where unthinking expressions of sexism, racism or other bias are unacceptable. If watching our words closely is a result, it's one I'm willing to live with. Much of what you see as being "read into words" are in fact subtle, possibly unintended, statements of bias. Those statements should be challenged. They should be questioned. We all make them at times. If unintentional, it is a good corrective for us to have these things pointed out. If intentional
there is no excuse for not directly confronting the bias, and stating that it is unacceptable.

Don't just dismiss this as "Political correctness" John, because you are likely of a group that little of the bias is directed at. It hurts all of us, not just the groups being put down.

Whitney,
.
Allow me to say this as bluntly, honestly and un-politically correct as I am capable:
.
You are full of crap.
.
I said nothing to deserve any of the B.S. from the thought police. I made some perfectly benign, positive statements about a woman. For some reason, a question of comparison between two people - neither of whom I attacked - got turned into a pissing contest over who was a woman-hater.
.
No, I won’t brush this off as an instance of “politically correctness.” It’s just plain stupidity; that’s what it is. It’s your stupidity. And I am directing these comments at you not because of your race, gender, country of national origin, sexual preference or political or religious persuasion. I am directing these comments at you because of the obvious emptiness of your skull. I am an equal opportunity critic. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Watch. And. Learn.

Michelle will end up being almost as popular world wide as Barack.

Plus, I'm so glad Hillary lost the primary for the additional reason that had she won, y'all would be making invidious comparisons between Jackie O. and Billybob.

And they would be invidious indeed.

Oh no can we please have respect for the deceased and not compare Michelle O to Jackie O? No comparison in class, beauty, ideals etc
