President Barack Obama praised the House's action on a bill aimed at recouping the bonuses that AIG paid executives after collecting billions in federal bailout funds.

"Today's vote rightly reflects the outrage that so many feel over the lavish bonuses that AIG provided its employees at the expense of the taxpayers who have kept this failed company afloat,'' the president said in a statement issued by the White House.

" Now this legislation moves to the Senate, and I look forward to receiving a final product that will serve as a strong signal to the executives who run these firms that such compensation will not be tolerated.,'' he waid. "In the end, this is a symptom of a larger problem - a bubble and bust economy that valued reckless speculation over responsibility and hard work. That is what we must ultimately repair to build a lasting and widespread prosperity."

The House today passed a bill that seeks to recoup the lion's share of the $165 million in bonuses paid to executives of American International Group.

The House measure, hurriedly crafted at the demand of Democratic leaders, proposes a 90 percent tax on those who were paid bonuses at AIG and other firms if they received more than $5 billion in federal bailout funds.

The Senate is preparing a similar measure with a 35 percent excise tax on executive bonuses. The Senate could take up its measure next week, or reconcile with the House.

"Bonus tax a 'strong signal'

...and yet half of the Limbaugh Republicans STILL voted against it...

Ha ha ha !!

The big question here is: How is Grover "Bathtub" Norquist dealing with this?

Since the bonus tax is an income tax increase that presumably violates the Americans for Tax Reform Taxpayer Protection Pledge (which almost all Republicans in Congress have signed), will there be a Norquist-led GOP backlash against the Republicans who voted for the bonus tax? Or is Norquist's brain just melting and oozing out his nose?

All of the fake outrage and crying from the Republicans yesterday because these AIG bonuses were in the bailout (which were in there only because the treasury thought they were contractally obligated to let them have them)....and then today when they can vote have them taxed out?.....half of the Republicans vote to leave them in.

It's official--even the NY Times, the fishwrap of record, does more balanced reporting than the DNC Swamp. From the NY Times:

"The bill that the House approved on Thursday was offered by Representative Charles B. Rangel, the New York Democrat who heads the House Ways and Means Committee. [and is a tax cheat himself] It would take 90 percent of the A.I.G. bonuses back in federal taxes. It would apply to bonuses paid since Jan. 1 by A.I.G. or any other company accepting more than $5 billion in bailout money.

“This is not going to happen again,” Mr. Rangel said. “The light is flashing and letting them know that America won’t take it.”

Mr. Boehner was disdainful of Mr. Rangel’s proposal, calling it “a sham” and urging adoption of a bill to get back the bonus money at once. The $165 million in bonuses has spawned rage in part because it was paid to executives in the very unit of A.I.G. that arguably turned a stable, prosperous insurance company into a dice-rolling financial firm in search of quick profits.

The Republicans said their measure would get back all of the bonus money, not just most of it.

And they said it would do so within two weeks, as opposed to the year or so that the Democrats’ bill would take — assuming, that is, that the A.I.G. executives filed honest tax returns."

Assume Democrats file honest tax returns? If President Teleprompter's own cabinet doesn't do so, why should AIG Execs?

GOP Votes Against HR 1586 - TARP Bous Tax more than 1/2 of the House GOPers just said "NO".

It passed anyway.

The bill To impose an additional tax on bonuses received from certain TARP recipients just passed by the House.
.
87 Republicans voted against it.
85 Republicans voted for it.
243 Democrats voted for it.
6 Democrats voted against it.

When it came to correct the wrong - only half of the GOP could muster themselves to vote 'aye'. And their boss, Big Boss Limbaugh, is on the air saying 'so what' to the AIG bonuses.

Meanwhile, the Republican idiots are scrambling for a scapegoat.

They need to put Dodd and Obama's heads on a plate so that nobody will go back and look at how Bush's administration refused to unspool the threat that AIG posed.

The DOJ could easily have guessed that AIG was torquing up to blow. The SEC knew it was a ticking time bomb. AIG was operating under a deferred prosecution arrangement when we started to bail the behemoth out.

This was foreseeable, for as long as five years and maybe closer to a decade.

This is just the start, if you are on the democrats enemies' list, you are next. Do you think Big Oil executives could be far behind? What about big tobacco?
.
And if you loons think your are imune to this, remember, there will be a republican in the White House someday and maybe he will go after Big Hollywood salaries or how after the CEO's of GE, Disney, Viacom, and Time-Warner? Maybe it will be the Presidents of large labor unions - better watch your back Andy Stern.
.
These guys are starting to make Nixon look like a little playground bully
The ironic thing is it was BO's staff (Turbo Tax Timmy and Summers) and Chris "Waitress Sandwich" Dodd that enabled this whole mess with the Dodd Amendment in the spendulus bill that BO signed. Now BO feigns outrage (after the campaign contributions have flown in) while he taxes someone's income at 90%.
.
Shouldn't the majority stockholder have taken care of this liability to the employees when the federal acquisition was made?

Does this apply to the Fannie and Freddie retention bonuses that wer announced also? Do you think Brothel Barney would allow it?
.
Are you kidding, Brothel Barney and his brethern are bought and paid for - with gov't money none the less

So something like 85 Republicans, including Eric "ears" Cantor, voted FOR a tax increase. How interesting.

Obama neglects to note that he signed the bill which included the bonus language...without ever reading it. He has an obligation to know what's in each bill before he signs it into law. He likes to say that the buck stops with him but he doesn't believe it.

I've gotta hand it to Speaker Pelosi.

Today, she took the Repuglicans whining about AIG bonuses and gutted them in half by having them vote on it....and as expected, over half of the corporate loving Repugs ended up voting "Yes" to allowing AIG to keep their bonuses.

Well played, Maam, we've always known the Repugs were full of crap and fake outrage but it's even better when they put it on display for all of America to see.

This will leave corporate America wondering what happened to their republican bedfellows.

Barrett, not only does Obama fail to note that it was HIS sadministration, according to Chris Dudd that wanted a provision protecting such bonuses, but Corrupt "Journalist" Mark Silva keeps neglecting to report that bit of information. You see each day Mark Silva asks Obama, Emanuel and Axelrod, his true bosses, how far he is to bend over to cover their butts.

Wait a second here ... Obama is outraged that the White House put a provision in the bill allowing the bonuses ?

What is Terry's fascination with the sex lives of Democratic politicians? He can't make a post without making reference to their sex lives. It's really kind of a perverted fixation of his. He obvious has some rather deep personal issues that he can't help acting out on on this board.

These idiots in Congress should be ashamed of themselves for intentionally fomenting mob violence against private citizens. It would serve them right if they were targeted for similar treatment by outraged Americans for their hyper-McCarthyist tactics and bodily ejected from their offices.

Ahh, yes, the Right wing appeal for the violent overthrow of the democratically elected United States Government. Traitors abound on the right.

Tell me., VRWC, is it a hyper-McCarthyist(Right wing hero, BTW) appeal to mob violence when right wing politicians attack unions and their members and blame them for all the ills of the american industry, calling them greedy? Are you as concerned about how those private citizens are attacked? Were you concerned when McCain and Palin were stirring up their rallies against Bill Ayers, private citizen of the US? Did the cries of "kill him" ellict your concern?

Hey Judy,
.
The "Brothel Barney" name has nothing to do with HIS sex live, but with that of his roommate in DC that was running a brothel out of the townhouse they shared - unbeknownest to Brothel Barney - that's one sharp cookie.
.
Google "barney frank brothel" and choose from the 39,200 links to read from.

OK, Terry, more to the point, what's your fascination with the sex lives of Democrats and their roomates? I'm really not as interested in reading those tens of thousands of links as you are. I'm sure you derived hours and hours of purient pleasure from it, but I have an interesting enough life that I don't need to fixate on the sexilves of Dodd, Frank, Frank's roomate, and other politically connected folks like you do. Have you takljlked to anyone about this fixation of yours? Does your Wife/Girl friend/Boyfriend know about your extensive research on the sex lives of democrats? Do they think it's a healthy aspect of your sexuality? In the end it's your choice certainly, and I for one would never argue that against any adult expressing their sexuality with other adults in any way they want (as long as no one gets hurt), but It's just kind of out of place in these political boards.

Judy,
.
Why don't you go take a peak at past posts about Sen Craig, Sen Vitter, the NYTimes allocation of the John McCain affiar.
.
Truthfully, I really don't care about his sex life. The "Brothel" refernce is for his stupidity that he pleaded ignorance by stating he had no idea his roommate was doing this? He is either ignorant or a liar. I'll let you pick.
.
If you want to argue this 90% tax rate - bring it. I have made posts about this topic - you however seem fixated about ny passing reference to Barney's stupidity

Terry, you're either an absolute idiot or you're in the board of directors for AIG. Well, essentially both are the same.

This is not some simply a case of imposing a 90% income tax on someone who's making big bucks. Although a fraud like yourself would use this as the most prominent point in your argument.

This is about reclamation. It's about showing corporate bastards that if they use taxpayers' money for personal gain in a crisis, then it will be revoked.

Bobby,
.
Not sure what point you want to make except all the name calling, but thta is what flatliners do best
.
Gethnier was in on it from the beginning and the Dodd Amendment in the Spendulus bbill assured they got the bonuses. This is just a way for the dems to take cover after America is in an uproar over this.
.
This is really the democrats first version of a windfall rpofit tax. Just wait until Big Oil has another record year - you will see this type of tactic used by the dems.
.
You flatliners should remember, things run in cycles, the GOP will be in charge again in the future. I would think a tax on trial lawyers for any earnings on a case over $1 million dollars would be fair. What do you think or in your case feel?
.
Bobby - one more thing, you should take the advice of President Lincoln "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Advice you yourself should take ,Terry, before you refer to gay men as "queens" and before you make refernce to the sex lives of politicians like Dodd in unrelated threads. You've clearly shown that you live in the gutter, wallowing in you ignorance. There truly is no doubt what kind of fool you show yourself to be.

Judy,
.
Once again, you show your hypocracy by not calling out the following:
.
"Grover "Bathtub" Norquist" by Kalifornia
.
"the Republican idiots" by Walter Yasback
.
"Eric "ears" Cantor"by Flo
.
"the Repugs" by Vioncent Talbot
.
"hyper-McCarthyist" by VRWC
.
One more time you show yourself as an idiot. If you think Chris Dodd and the wiatress sandwich is about sex, then you have a problem. The Chris Dodd "Waitress Sandwich" epsiode, with his partner Teddy "The Swimmer" Kennedy has to do with the two Senators "sandwiching a waitress, against her wishes, and the sexually grinding her. Now if you think a man forcing himself on another woman is ones "sex life", you are one demented woman.
.
http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/politics/national/features/2165/
.
I can't wait to post something for me making fun of Teddy's athletic skills.

You know, the government is actually making a LOT of money off this subprime fiasco. Goldman Sachs paid back TARP with 23% interest in less than 6 months, Bank of America paid back with a hell of a lot of interest too. Now obama is taxing their bonus's by 90%??? These people make most of their moeny off the bonus. To put it into perspective, Warren Buffet's base salary is 100,000. His new "bonus tax" is worth more than the tax of like the entire state of Vermont probably. I think this tax is ridiculous.
