Let's agree from the outset that political correctness for the sake of political correctness can be a real bore.
So I write this with some trepidation. But I don't think it's being politically correct to say it was truly wince-inducing and disappointing to watch President Barack Obama on the Jay Leno Show deprecate his bowling abilities by referencing the Special Olympics.
Here's the exchange:
LENO: Now, are they going to put a basketball -- I imagine the bowling alley has been just burned and closed down.THE PRESIDENT: No, no. I have been practicing all -- (laughter.)
LENO: Really? Really?
THE PRESIDENT: I bowled a 129. (Laughter and applause.)
LENO: No, that's very good. Yes. That's very good, Mr. President.
THE PRESIDENT: It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something. (Laughter.)
LENO: No, that's very good.
THE PRESIDENT: No, listen, I'm making progress on the bowling, yes.
Put yourself in the shoes of an intellectually disabled kid hearing that coming from a president's mouth, maybe a child whose highest aspiration is to participate in the Special Olympics.
It would be hard to come away from that with anything other than the feeling that you had been dissed, that the president had demeaned you for the sake of an easy laugh.
I imagine such kids know they're different and have limitations compared with a lot of other people, that they're reminded of their differences all the time.
They didn't need a president, especially one who has positioned himself as the avatar of hope, to make such a careless and hurtful remark,
Obama seems to be a fairly sensitive and compassionate man who wouldn't purposely set out to offend the disabled and those who love and befriend them.
He's also usually cautious in how he presents himself, with the little editor inside his head constantly at work when he speaks off the cuff, though there've been some notable exceptions, of course, like the people-clinging-to-guns-and-religion line.
That's why it was so striking to hear him so casually toss out that joke.
It's especially remarkable since he sits at the same desk in the Oval Office that was once used by one of the greatest leaders history has known, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a man with not an intellectual disability but withered legs who was still strong enough to put the world on his shoulders, helping it endure two of the worst catastrophes of modern times -- the Depression and the Second World War. You would hope that alone might give the president an extra sensitivity, Roosevelt being one of his heroes.
Also, there are Special Olympics bowlers with significantly higher scores than Obama's best score. So his joke is off-base there too.
The joke clearly marred his appearance and is getting a lot of criticism, from his usualconservative detractors as might be expected but from those on the political left too.
The White House shovel brigade has also come out to try and clean things up. But this is one of those instances where nothing but an apology from the president himself will probably do.

Comments
I'm sorry, but I don't see how this is really news. I mean, yes, the President used a poor choice of words to describe his bowling game, but he was not putting down the Special Olympics. I think the White House issuing a statement as quickly as they did probably added fuel to the fire.
Overall it was a pretty good spot and I think he came off well.
BTW, an interesting and humorous take on this topic here: http://tinyurl.com/obamabowlsturkey

Not to excuse the President, but I think the common interpretation of this event in all the news stories is wrong. The President was referring to the Special Olympics, but I believe not referring to his own score, but to Jay Leno's congratulations of it. It doesn't make it better, but I think the difference is important.

it seems most of the media isn't covering this story. how pathetic
Posted by: rob | March 20, 2009 8:26 AM
The joke was the high point. The whole show was a shameless political setup of inane and self serving questions by someone truly in love with the President. Michelle would have at least delved a little deeper.

Not good, BHO.
Cut the comedy. Joe, you too. It doesn't come off well. It's not the first time he has made me wince, and it's nothing to do with PC. It's to do with the feelings of challenged kids and adults.

Who sabotaged the teleprompter?
Posted by: Terry | March 20, 2009 8:33 AM
This is BS.
The President's remark can easily be interpreted as an inspiring remark as follows:
"I'm working on my bowling skills in spite of special challenges, and I'm not letting these challenges intimidate me."
Just think of your favorite politician making this remark after it has become well-known that he is struggling with a given athletic area. It is painfully obvious that you are applying a double-standard here.

We all have prejudice.
It's his view on being handicapped.
No wonder he made comments about Palin's youngest son.
Everyone needs to try and stop censoring people's words, thoughts.
He was a little too loose. But it does sound like to talks this way alot.

Get a life, will ya? Minor comment, quickly repaired. He did fine on Leno.

I can see why the tard pugs would take such offense to Obama's joke. For the restofus, it is quite funny and is not as bad as the headlines make it sound. I'm glad you included the quote Frank. I'm getting real sick of worry about everyone's "feelings" and their fake offenses they claim. It was a joke, it was in good taste, and it does not mar the special olympics or the challenged in our society.
Posted by: Xcellentform | March 20, 2009 9:02 AM
I was stunned by President Obama's remark. I coach Special Olympics kids and have a son with Down Syndrome who loves Barack Obama. When he saw the news this morning, I tried to talk over what Obama was saying. My son heard him say "special olympics'. We happen to be going to the Vermont games today and mys son is a participant after a couple of months of training on cold days. He said, "Is Barack coming to the ceremony?!" As a Obama supporter myself, I just said no, but winced and felt very let down by the President of the United States where all are equal. Very sad.
Posted by: Tom McEvoy | March 20, 2009 9:04 AM
Good point Frank. Only a personal apology will suffice. Let us hope to see one without the TelePrompTer, otherwise it becomes only political cover for a another off the cuff insight into a carefully handled political rote.

If a Man says "I ate like a pig" Or "I can eat a horse" Did he? or does he? Or what about Crying like a Baby? Everyone wants to look for the bad. It couldnt possibly have meant that in regards to Bowling he feels a little handicapped. It wasnt intended as an insult to those with disabilities. Maybe I dont have a leg to stand on.
If I use a poor choice of words am I insulting the poor? Get on with your lives the expression was not directed to insult. Oh and by the way Golfers judge Rate their skill of the game by using term "Handicap" Whats yours?
Posted by: John B | March 20, 2009 9:50 AM
I was very disappointed by the President's comments. How can this be taken other than disparaging to disabled people? When he has his teleprompter he talks about how we are all equal, disabled not disabled etc... But when he is just speaking his mind the truth comes out. That he holds disabled people in low regard by saying the fact he is bad at something puts him on par with them.
Even an apology can't make up for this. However if he fixes the economy I'll think he is an asshole but at least a good politician.
Posted by: Robin Crusoe | March 20, 2009 9:57 AM
"For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." (Matthew 12:34) The only people who think this comment was insignificant are those without a special loved one in their lives. This man is not my president.
Posted by: Nicole | March 20, 2009 9:58 AM
As an advocate for people with disabilities, my first reaction was "yikes". But after thinking about it, any activity that segregates a portion segment of the population perpetuates that those who are forced to be part of that "special" activity - because of being excluded from the typical experiences - are already stating "you are not good enough". Special Olympics means well, but it is also part of the problem and barriors to true inclusion. Instead of figuring out how to include people of all abilities, Special Olympics is where a person is expected to go if they are not of the same level as others, or they are labeled with a disability. You can't on one hand say they aren't good enough (which they are and can be, or could be supported and have adaptations to be) to particpate in typical recreational activities and sports, but on the other hand have a segregated organization that no one can comment about the realities of it being in existence?

But some meaningless political artist melds the chimp attack with the stimulus bill that's gonna kill our economy.......and there's universal outrage from the blacks about that?
So, its wrong for us to not even make fun, but possibly imply that the chimp is obama, lending to individual interpertation.... but its ok to make fun of handicapped people.....?
Wow president obama sends a great message....

What an amazing lead into this story!! Democrats and liberals who invented "political correctness" all of a sudden find it a "bore" when one of their own puts their foot in their mouth. If a Republican made such an ignorant joke...like Obama did last night..I believe Frank James would be viciously attacking an out of touch, knuckle dragging Republican who is insensitive to special needs children. Then of course, the next step in the liberal playbook is to hit the blogs so their counterparts in the media will build the story up. And of course an interview with a crying special needs child. Now that the stage has been set... liberals would be demanding an apology or a resignation. But it was a Democrat who made the ignorant statement....so let's just forget a bout it!!!

And WHO is surprised by this gauche and downright cruel comment? Trouble is that the REAL Barack tends to leak-out when he's not hard-wired to a TelePrompTer-
-
Narcissists are often callous- and even ruthless. They tend to lack empathy and/or a conscience. This is evident in Obama's lack of interest in his own half-brother who lives in poverty in Kenya, or his aunt found living in public housing in Boston.
-
Obama's almost certainly a pathological narcissist... the most dangerous charismatic leaders are, comes from an insecure childhood (like Barack's).
---
Indicators include control freakery, grandiose self-importance, feeling "above the law", interpersonally exploitive, inability to handle criticism, lack of empathy, arrogant behavior, surrounds himself with sycophants... sound familiar?
-
Obama is a mess- and his insecurities, bad childhood, and irresponsible, far-left-wierdo mother are now all OUR problem, too-

Frankly, I am disabled now and am no more inclined to watch the Special Olympics than before I
was disabled. The whole notion of the Olympics in Greece was to celebrate beauty in its athletic
form--beautiful, muscled bodies in perfect form, and a group of the disabled competing, however
well, is not beautiful. Although the human spirit is beautiful, a crippled body is not, and the whole
idea of the Special Olympics getting the kind of public attention and traction that it does I have
always found somewhat ridiculous, and it probably only got the attention because it was a
Kennedy behind it and no one wanted to speak truth to power. It's like, "let's all be in denial" and
say how beautiful it is to watch crippled people try to do the same things that the Olympians do,
but it is not beautiful, it is excruciating.
Having said that, Obama--who I campaigned and voted for enthusiastically-- shouldn't have made
the wise-crack that he did because it was demeaning of the disabled and demeaning of the
Presidency. I guess he's not perfect after all!

One of the most redeeming qualities of a human being is the ability to laugh at one's self, at others, and at life--absent the intent to inflict hurt. As I believe this is the case here. I watched the show last night and this whole incident was lost on me because of the innocence of the remark. I think the president is confident, relaxed and has a sense of humor. I'm still chuckling.

Remeber Don Imus' Comment?
Obama said: "He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It’s one that I’m not interested in supporting."
Therefore, laughter and the lack of reaction from Obama’s remarks suggest Americans have a set a rules for race, class and gender: If you touch them you will pay.
And another set of rules for individuals that have a mental or physical disability: If you touch them, it’s ok if you apologize. Oh, and by the way, it’s okay to laugh at the jokes that come at the expense of the latter.
It is just cruel.

The whole 2 party system is such crap and only makes for false associations and polar division. All this talk about "libs" and "conservatives" as if there are only 2 ways of seeing the world is ridiculous.
Obama is human...he will make mistakes. What he said was inappropriate. But not nearly as important as what he does to help our economy and our image abroad.

Honestly I think either way it's stupid.
The president had enough brains to get to where he is now by thinking before he speaks. He purposefully did this in order to gain some kind of publicity.
In a way he in fact did insult. I know for a fact his response was not professional at all. Not saying that since he's the president he has to be in the right and political all the time. But he does need to understand hundreds of thousands view that show and even a cough would send the slightest message to all.
Down to it everyone has their own opinion of right or wrong. So there is no right or wrong. S
Therefore Barack Obama did nothing wrong, he did nothing right.
Just know that somebody is always going to be offended just because they can.
It's called state of mind and state of reality, also known as your opinion.
This is the truth so if you are offended sorry, if not then you have to move on especially if he was/was not directing that towards you personally.
Perhaps in a way he was saying how bad he was, and that special Olympians are much better (which is true) and that can be taken either way.
