President Barack Obama, ready "to go at it'' with a news conference timed for prime-time television tonight, will make an appeal for bold federal spending and action in the face of a persistent economic crisis.

The presidential news conference arrives as the Treasury Department announced a strategy this week for relieving banks of bad debt clogging the credit markets, a move that rallied Wall Street with a nearly 500-point gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday.

Yet the architect of the plan, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, has faced increasing criticism from Congress over the nearly $200 million in bonuses that American International Group paid its executives after collecting nearly $200 billion in federal bailout funds.

The president's second prime-time appeal to the public in front of the Washington press corps arrives as Obama presses Congress for approval of a new $3.55-trillion federal budget with a broad array of initiatives in education, energy and health care and also an annual deficit of more than $1 trillion.

It also comes as he prepares for his first trip to Europe as president next week, with Obama today calling on the G-20 at its summit in London to make a global commitment to restoring economic balance in the world.

"What the president will do tonight is update the American people on the steps that this administration is taking to get the economy moving again,'' Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said on the Today show this morning.

Obama has staunchly defended his Treasury secretary, declaring in an interview aired by CBS News' 60 Minutes on Sunday that, even if Geithner were to submit his resignation, Obama would tell his secretary: "Sorry, buddy, you've still got the job.''

""He's got a lot of stuff on his plate,'' Obama said of Geithner in the 60 Minutes interview. "And he is doing a terrific job. And I take responsibility for not, I think, having given him as much help as he needs."

American public outrage over the AIG saga is focused on not only AIG, but also on Congress and Geithner, according to the results of a Gallup Poll released today.

"A majority of Americans are dissatisfied with the way AIG management, Congress, and Treasury Secretary Geithner have handled the matter,'' Gallup reports. " Only President Obama gets a more positive than negative evaluation.''

On Monday, a reporter called out a question to Obama as the president made a brief appearance with Geithner at the White House to ask if he could offer "any assurances to taxpayers who are skeptical'' that the Treasury's bank rescue will work.

"You know,'' said the president, "I'll have a full press conference tomorrow night, and you guys are going to be able to go at it.''

The president and the press will "go at it'' in the East Room of the White House this evening, starting at 8 pm EDT, with major broadcast and cable networks providing live coverage of Obama's second news conference as president.

Another Teleprompter show.
Wonder if he will read it off correctly.

Tonight is all about shoring up Obama's political capital and erasing 60 minutes and AIG and everything else that happened last week from the minds of Americans.

What is it with Obama and his insensitivity towards people who would rather watch their regularly scheduled TV programming instead of more campaign speeches? Why do the networks let him do this? Never mind - people running the networks aren't too smart in the first place. Are we going to hear anything new?

Yes indeedy Inky. While you have convinced me that President Obama can't speak, you have also reinforced my belief in the earth is flat and conservatives actually are conservative. After hearing so much from the dillweeds that Obama was not born in Hawaii or that his birth certificate is fake, it is refreshing to hear you give all that up to pursue a more ridiculous rant of his inability to speak. It is clear you have spent sheepless nights listening to Rush.

Hopefully, the media will not be required to submit their questions in advance so Bama can have the answers on TelePrompter. Let's see if the media have the guts to go after their hero as they did Bush.

Yes Mr. President, let's go at it, because your speeches are getting old.

If he laughs and giggles alot tonight--check out his eyes, they may be glassy. Then you have to ask yourself...Is the pressure of the office too much for him and he reverted back to his old ways.

Some take longer than others to learn, billr. You'll get it eventually. Some of us who live in the Chicago area know who Obama is and who Rahm is. We weren't delighted with McCain, but we certainly knew that you people were opening the gates to rampant fascism by voting as you did and we couldn't vote with you. Now we are all living with your stupidity, and we know it will take a while for you to recognize it and admit it.

The only hope we all have is that Obama's absolute incompetence will prevent him from shredding the Constitution and "remaking" our country into a totalitarian state.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. The men's NIT basketball and women's NCAA will be on at the same time as Obama's propaganda "Big Lie"
appearance. There's probably a rerun of Leave It to Beaver that would provide more of a view of the state of the nation than President Doom's imitation of Wally reading his script.

Obama has a positive view because he has no idea as to what's going on.

but we certainly knew that you people were opening the gates to rampant fascism

"You people" need to get your name calling straight. One day it's socialism, then communism, now facism. Granted, as long as you use a name that one can pretend to be patriotic in attacking, you feel much better. After 2 years of campaigning, and winning, you must be out of touch(to be nice)to believe Obama can't speak. It is absurd and you only seem like fools to argue the point. Hey...not that that ever stopped you before.

So to believe that Obama is not as great of a speaker as has been advertised is to believe that the Earth is flat, eh, bill r.? See, and here I thought you were an intelligent man who understands that when even the New York Times takes time to write an article chiding their man for relying overmuch on his teleprompter, this insinuates that his over-reliance on the teleprompter is now as well documented as the fact that the Earth is round. Stop pretending otherwise, and try, for once, defending the actions of this president, rather than pretending that our choice somehow lies, not between this president's current actions and better ones, but between this president's actions and the mythologized ones of his predecessor.

Isn't it time to get past the "empty suit -- can only read from a teleprompter" nonsense. Americans -- at least the majority not blinded by political partisanship and deafened by right-wing talk radia -- have seen enough of Obama to realize that he is very intelligent, more learned than we are used to in a President, and highly articulate. His so-called "gaffes" are remarkable only for the ridiculous fuss made over them by political opponents and headline writers. As a communicator he is what I would expect from a former senior lecturer at the U. of Chicago. Having graduated twice from that great institution I can assure you that they do not let empty suits or dummies stand up before students. If you want to believe he is the Antichrist, or a reincarnation of Karl Marx that's your privilege, but stop trying to convince us he is something he clearly is not.

The teleprompter story is a deliberate right wing myth.

The one pool reporter who covered the story has stated that Obama was clearly joking when he thanked himself. He was trying to be self-deprecating as a way of deflecting embarrassment away from the previous speaker.

Then some right wing blogs deliberately distorted the story, and that distortion was reported as news by the twittering 24 hour news cycle, without any of the actual traditional journalistic practices like confirmation from actual witnesses.

The decline of real professional journalism is a reat threat to our democracy.

Hagar,

Forget to take your meds again? Better put on your tin foil hat.

How is Obama shredding the Constitution? Illegal wire tapping? Torture? Oh wait, that was Bush.

billr you gotta get off that kool-aid pal, your brain is turning into mush. Our president can't get out of campaign mode and he better start to realize the world is not his oyster for the taking.

Plans that have no details as we've seen are a BUST! This AIG thing is nothing but a smoke screen and that's exactly what president Obama is best at - the political campaign smoke screens to detract from his many shortcomings and inexperiences in leading anybody, anything in any direction.

The poor guys spinning in circles, tossing out continual rhetoric as if he's still campaigning for the job and his pals in crime are turning out to be bigger flunkies than he is.

Wake up and smell the coffee, that is if you can get your nose out of the kool-aid jug!

Enough already. All O'bama has done to date is confirm what we already knew about him. He has never been in charge of anything in his life and now the world can see why. The guy is a lightweight that keeps peeking out from underneath the shirt of Nancy Pelosi. He has removed from the balloting for Rookie of the Year. He has turned the WHite House into Animal House with his Wednesday night parties. Nice swing set in the back yard too. And the lovely Michelle. Nice photo opt in the new garden. Never did see anyone dressed like she was going to work in a garden. This is the biggest bunch of phoney balogna that we have seen ina long time and I never thought anyone could ever be as poor excuse for a President as Jimmy Carter. Where is that Mission Accomplished banner when you really need it?

It's funny, I can remember DICK cheyney saying budget deficits don't matter and the rest of the 'party of no' agreed. Now that we are in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and we have a President doing something about it the 'party of no' is all aghast and against the federal spending. Wait-I already know their plan: sit around and do nothing while their frinds rob the treasury. What a bunch of hypicrites.

Um, will anyone ask about how we'll pay for all of these TRILLIONS? Every economist outside the reach of the Obama administration has said it's a DISASTER! WE CAN'T AFFORD THIS!

I love how some of you conservatives still pretend like the media is on Obama's side. Obama has been under the microscope more in two months than Bush was his entire eight years (e.g., his first 100 days and so on. . .). Yeah, Bush was the constant butt of jokes, but I don't ever remember him being intensely and persistently questioned by the media at every step as much as Obama. Word of advice to Obama - stop trying to prove your self to the cynics and detractors, there are people out there who will never like you, just continue to do your job and stop allowing the media and these conservative saboteurs to undermine your every move. Stop trying to appease these people with these press conferences - you run the risk of over exposure (as if he hasn't already been overexposed)!

Nattering nabobs of negativity.
:-)
Almost every post here.

I appreciate Obama's effort to 'bring the presidency into the living room' but really wish he'd just do his job and quit trying to convince us every other day that this is the best plan we got. The more he tries to convince the public the more skeptical the public gets. And every time I hear him talk all I hear is him creating a sense of urgency so he has a window to push though his liberal agenda. Not thanks, Mr. President.

hey everybody--look at me!! i don't know anything myself, but i'll happily parrot out everything i heard on fox news today if you'll think i'm smart!!

Gosh, some of you need to stop drinking the kool-aid.

He and his handlers know that a lot of people just love to hear him talk. They love to see him give speeches. They love the sound of his voice. If he doesn't stay real visible, he risks losing that affection, which would be disastrous for him as he cannot rely on his skills and judgment to prop up his approval rating.

Here we go again. More lies straight from Princess O's mouth to pass yet another bankrupting scheme. Only bright spot, networks lose millions in advertising when Princess O speaks. She should do one a week.

Ha! Hagar, we are a long way from fascism. Don't use such terms if you don't know what they actually mean.

I guess he can fool the general population with his speechs read off the teleprompter. This is his way of avoiding the press corps!! Too bad they don't make mobile teleprompters!!!

Your hope for change will be smashed by your trust in government.
Both republicans and democrats are at fault over the last 16 years. That's right, I'm bashing both parties so shut the pie hole.

The answer is simple:

1). vote out ALL incumbent republicans and democrats, these rats need to be drug down Pennsylvania Ave. by their ties to a molten pot of tar and subsequently feathered on national T.V.

2). let AIG and big banks that took too much risk fail. Hello you IDIOT politicians, no bailouts = no bonuses.

3). let those home owners who took those bad loans fall flat on their faces. If you can't understand the terms of your loan and took on WAY TOO MUCH RISK... YOU DESERVE TO FAIL.

It almost seems like we have an accountability problem in America. RETARD Politicians don't read the bills and idiot buyers didn't read the terms and conditions of their loan. Neither deserve any sympathy or pity.

For those of us who ACTUALLY followed the rules, pickup your pitchfork and torch and join a tea party on April 15th: http://taxdayteaparty.com/

For those who voted for "change" I leave you with the solace of Samuel Adams:
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Sorry I have never listen to Rush
might try, any thing is better than Obama's TV Clowning.

Who has been preselected for asking questions this time?

Do you think he will tell us that the national debt ceiling will be raised to $20 Trillion next week when we blow through the current $11.3 authorized ceiling.

Do you think he will tell us who he is going to tax when we go from 2 million people making over $250,000 to less than one million people making over $250,000.

Let's have a 90% tax on athletes, Hollywood, and the music industry. They have too much money, live in big houses and let's face it, there are a few conspicuous consumers among these groups. These people have so much money they don't need and don't know what to do with it. We would be doing them a favor to tax these industries at 90%. And the money could be used to further the Obama/Pelosi/Reid agenda. Sounds like everyone wins.

This is just another show to get the Obamabots into a frenzy. But the real anger should be fired at the naif in the WH for his power grab. Will any Media outlet even question his socialist-pacifist agenda? Will someone remind him this looks like Italy in the '20's when Mussolini used their capitalism as corporate Fascism with socialism thrown in to 'rescue the economy.' Will anyone ask him about his policies on Mexico cartels, jihadists and illegals swamping our SW border towns? Will someone ask him whether he will support Israel if they take out Iranian missiles with nuclear capability? If so, will he be revealed to be the naif he is?

Does "go at it" mean choosing pre-selected questions from fawning Obama lovers? Oh, I'm sure we'll get at least one question from Fox News that the messiah can dance around and show what a great orator he is. What a bunch of cr*p. It sounds like a must-miss.
I promise I will give Obama at least as much respect as libs gave George Bush when he was president. Half the time the networks didn't even bother to televise President Bush when he did prime-time news conferences.

It is absolutely hilarious watching these liberals desperately hanging on to the notion that they picked the right guy for the job as they all stick their collective heads deeper into the sand in ignorant bliss. Obummer is a boob. Count the number of "uhms," "errrs," and dead air when he's off the teleprompter and convince yourselves what an articulate speaker this moron is. Get off your lazy dead a**ses and take care of yourselves. Obummer isn't going to do it, despite his "articulate speech."

Yikes. What happens when Mr. TelePromptor decides to go on strick? Who really believes that "reporters" can have a go at it (meaning the telepromotor). He could just send out the campagin answers. I'm really sick of this.
