Bill Clinton had his designer-putting green on the South Lawn.
George W. Bush and Laura Bush had their rubberized walking-path along the driveway that runs the perimeter of the South Lawn.
The Obamas have their swing set.
First daughters Malia and Sasha Obama came home from school today to find a swing set installed while they were away, set up within sight of the Oval Office.
"A spokeswoman for the first lady said the girls, 10 and 7 years old, squealed with delight upon seeing the swing set,'' the AP reports,'' and the girls played on it for almost an hour on a chilly, wintry day in Washington.
The Obamas have been trying to make the White House feel more like home for the girls. Thus, a 100-percent wooden swing set, made by a South Dakota company.

Comments
If you are going to put a swing set on the lawn of the White House, at least make sure it is safe. There is no mulch or soft surface for the girls to fall on. The manufacturer recommends this in the installation instructions. My neighbor's son broke his arm falling off of one of these sets. They didn't have any mulch either.

I'm waiting for Jabba the Rush and the bat sh*t crazy Repuglicans to start calling the Obama girls swing set a: 'socialist/terrorist' swing set.
Calling everything Obama and the Dems do to try and fix the mess that the BushCo Repuglicans made: 'socialist/terrorist', is about the only trick they have left in their trick bag anymore.

That is so sweet, I'm glad she is trying to keep the girls well grounded and keep their family values. I love the new first family.

I wonder if we'll be able to make it through this posting with only aww's or how cute comments instead of this somehow symbolizing something awful that this says about the Pres.

Now they get a swing set? After daddy said last fall that he'd never let them "be punished" with a baby? What more could these kids want?
ABORTION NEWS ALA OBAMA
Hialeah, Florida abortion mill owner, Belkis Gonzalez, was all in a dither.
A customer/client, teenager Sycloria Williams, 23 weeks pregnant, delivered a baby sitting in a chair in Gonzalez’ mill, apparently after Gonzalez had botched aborting Williams’ baby.
What to do?
Well, our new president set the standard, no? After all, he voted, twice, as an Illinois state senator to just let babies die if they happened to survive a screwed up abortion. And, he had voted in the U.S. Senate in favor of partial birth abortions whereby full-term babies could have their lives terminated and their bodies dissected piece by piece.
(Please see http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=803 for background on the Hialeah “incident” and http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=787 for an extended piece on your president–not mine–and why your president–not mine endorses the literal murder of defenseless infants. His rationale? “Well, look, if the mother-to-be decided she instead wanted to kill her baby, who are we to disagree? Trash the damned baby!”)
What else could Gonzalez do? Defy her president’s wishes?...

It's nice that the folks at RainbowPlay.com got this. We've had their swing set for years and it's held up right. I'm sure it will last 8 years for the Obamas.

It nice to see that Obama and the family are setting in. Like many Americans they want the best for their children. But his policies are not good for America or his children. He is putting them in "HOCK". Every time he looks out and sees them swing he should save AM I DOING WAHTS BEST FOR THEM. WE MY POLICY OF APPEASEMENT KEEP THEM SAVE.?

MSM, please continue to bring us these great articles on Obama’s neckties, puppy vetting process, and how he likes to play basketball.
-
Don’t worry about his attempts to run socialism in through the back door, petty vindictiveness and attempts to squelch all opposing voices, myriad broken campaign promises, the political smoke-plume coming out of Illinois with Blago, Rahmbo, and Rezko... or Obama's dreadful cabinet nominations; that’s all just a “distraction” from the "hitorical moment"… and our intentions SHOULD be suspect if we ask to know all the details, right?

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

Yea! It's nice to have a family with kids in the White House instead of a corrupt administration.
Let the mud slinging begin!

At taxpayer expense, of course.

Gene:
Only you would find fault with a frickin' SWING SET at the White House. What do you think the kids are going to do....sit inside and do homework and watch TV all day?
Only you would turn a nice story into something idiotic. Take your hatred somewhere else, wingnut.

Reaganite Republican:
As long as you're a bleating sheep for the Druggie Limbaugh you don't stand a chance for your fascist rants. Obviously all the illegalities were ok when Bush/Cheney was in office - because the Republicans were doing it - but all of a sudden the people UNDOING the mess handed to them are somehow at fault for trying to reverse the damage. But, obviously, you don't see that there's any damage. It's likely all in your pea brain.
You don't have a chance in h*** in '10, no matter now much you crow and complain about it. The longer you have Rush as the face of your party, the more you'll lose. And it's already not looking good from initial reports.
You probably think that Palin's still a viable candidate for 2012. Keep smokin' those funny foreign ciggys, dude.
Idiot.

I wonder if the swing set was made in a socialist country?? Evil Socialism. That's a word that scares the ignorant Republicrats to death.
Posted by: Doug R. | March 5, 2009 10:17 AM
Reality Check: I guess you consider not paying taxes (3 Obama cabinet nominees in a row!) to be legal? The only change Obama has brought to Washington is a new leval of audacity. Obama tells us all we need to sacrifice but then buys a play set for his kids... hypocritical and ignorant. Please check back into reality.

Oh, good grief. There's grass under the swing set, not concrete. Big difference. It's their yard, aka a lawn. Let it be that. My four siblings and I played on a playground style swing set our dad set up in our yard, and we got hurt sometimes. Kids do get hurt on swings. It happens. It's part of a normal childhood. I'm beginning to think few children have normal childhoods anymore because of their over-protective neurotic parents. Give the kids a break. I'm no big Obama fan but I applaud them in their encouraging their girls to play outside rather than vegging in front of computers and TVs.

I don't like Obama as a politician, but he does have kids, he is a father. We need to separate the two. I'm happy these girls have a place to escape to and be kids. None of us will ever know what it is like to be the child of a president, always under Secret Service watch and always in the public eye. I also think it's nice to see kids in the White House - shows there is more to life than politics.
For those complaining that it was on the taxpayers expense - remember every president comes in and makes changes like this. FDR added a swimming pool in what is now the press room. Nixon had his bowling alley. This article even pointed out Bush had a rubberized walking path. It's one of the perks of being president - you get to make the White House a little more like a home.

I hope he dont fall and break his Obamaneck!
Posted by: judd | March 5, 2009 1:28 PM
Joe, it would be a LOT easier to separate the two if Stacy St. Clair and certain other reporters from the Trib didn't seem to be staffed as nothing more than the personal PR promoters of the Obama family.
The reality is, this should have been a one-line note in a washington recap and not a full news story. Unfortunately, the Tribune seems to think it can get out of bankruptcy through Obama boosterism.

People, it's a friggin' swingset, for crying out loud. And I did read that they paid for it themselves. Not everything the Obama's do needs to be tied to politics or lambblasted. They are parents, and good ones at that.
Good for you, Obama's. Have fun, girls. Part fort, part swingset. Yoweee!

I wonder if that was part of the stimulus program - that s/b a couple of jobs created.

I think the swing set was a good ideal. Kids need to be able to play inside and outside. I think they should also put a pool for the kids in the summer. And get them some jump ropes. Outside playing is so much fun. A tree house would be good too.

You'll be happy to know a friend of mine that works for the company says there is plans for rubber mulch under and around this swing set- they're just waiting for the weather to warm up a bit!

You people are pathetic! I logged onto this nice, MiamiMoms website only to find that you have nothing better to do than rip on the president for getting his girls a playground!!! Oh, its not safe they might fall, he's against abortion, he's for abortion, its about the stimulus package.....what is wrong with you people?????? God forbid any of you go out and buy something for your kids! What bad parents you must be to get something fun for your kids!! What a bunch of losers you are!
I'll never come back to this website.

It's good that he encourages his kids to play outside.
But how is this news? This not relevant to anything in his presidency other than he covered a pretty basic gesture in good parenting.
