Remember that "shining city on a hill" that President Ronald Reagan alluded to in his farewell address to the nation in 1989?
Perhaps it should be changed to the "shining porkopolis on a hill" now that the House voted 371-19 last night in favor of shelling out $1 million to celebrate what would be Reagan's 100th birthday.
The legislation would fund the "Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission" to help various governmental agencies and civic groups plan events to mark the anniversary of Reagan's birth in Tampico, Ill., in 1911.
The majority of Republicans and Democrats alike voted overwhelmingly in support of the measure. Earmark-buster Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Ron Paul were the only two members of the GOP who voted "no."
In the days of trillion-dollar stimulus packages, $1 million may be a drop in the bucket. But Democrats voting to spend taxpayer dollars honoring the patron saint of tax cuts, limited government and deregulation -- which some argue chart a straight line to the current economic crisis -- is interesting.
Why not hit up the pro-business groups that Reagan showered love upon during his tenure in the era of Gordon Gekko, as the nonpartisan Washington Independent suggests?

The so called "Reagan Republicans" Are Trying To Return To A Past That Doesn't Exist. You can accuse Republicans of a lot of things, but you should never accuse them of not being unified in their thinking. A month into the Obama era, the GOP may seem demoralized and disorganized. They may have no clear leader other than Druggy Rush, and their bright young hopes (Kenneth "the page" Jindal) may keep flaming out faster than they can schedule press conferences. But the diagnosis of the predicament they find themselves in is remarkably consistent. Republicans all agree on the solution. They must go back to their small-government, Reaganite past!
"If we return to our roots, to our belief in freedom, opportunity, security and individual liberty, our party will come back stronger than ever. -John the Boehner
"Movement conservatives are ready to reassert themselves in order to return our party to its roots of smaller government." -Newt Gingrich
"The basic principles that Ronald Reagan talked about in the '80s are just as important today. If we return to those basic core values we can continue to be successful in future elections". -Saxby Chambliss
"Limited government is based on the truth of history. We need to do what Ronald Reagan did." -Mike Pence
"We must return to the common-sense Reagan Republican ideals". -Mitt Romney

Here's where the Repuglicans run into a little problem with their blind Ronny Raygun worshipping:

Contrary to the lie perpetuated by Repubs (and bought into by the media) NONE of the past three GOP presidents - Reagan, Bush I or Bush II - were fiscal conservatives. In fact, their hero Reagan not only didn't care about the deficit, he exploded government spending with a military spending free for all that lasted nearly a decade.
$780 billion to stimulate the economy? Reagan would have laughed you out of the room. Inheriting a (relatively) measly $74 billion deficit from Carter (which was the same number Carter had started with), Reagan instantly doubled the government's entire military spending in his first year. All told, the Reagan Administration spent a massive $1.5 trillion on the military in their first five years, the largest build-up in the history of the world when there wasn't actually a war going on.
What's that you say Bobby Jindal - volcano research is a waste of money? Reagan dumped billions into the controversial, unproven Star Wars program with the goal of nuclearizing space. Reagan wanted to spend $1.6 trillion on that program alone.

Talk about a complete waste of the taxpayers money. Reagan was the most overrated President in U.S. history. He was a Democrat his entire life until he met Nancy Davis and divorced his first wife. He was also the first divorced American (Republican) President. He was an actor who pretty much acted out his Presidency at the instruction of others. Mr. Reagan, tear down that wall!!

This administrations budget for '10 is $3.6 trillion. What does one trillion
$ look like before it's spent on entitlements? Just for funsies, take a gander:

Pork in the name of glorifying an American myth is not pork at all; it is the hamburg and french fries of American politics. Reagan destroyed as much good as he created, however he did do much to change this country but I agree with Ms Cole that the source of the funds is incorrect.

I have no complaint about this; but I hope all the righties who whined about Obama recognizing Lincoln's birthday, etc. etc. will be posting their objections to this. Here goes another mil all you earmark haters.

It's only fitting to spend money on Reagan. He preached a big game as the national debt doubled under him. The gross federal debt now stands at 63.5% of GDP. Of that, 33.5 percentage points were contributed by Reagan-Bush, 6 points by G. W. Bush, and 6.1 points by printing money. The remaining 18 points are left over from WWII.

I love the "conservatives" big government, big spending cries.....The national debt doubled under Reagan and Bush. Hey...but they're conservative........in who they spend on.

More pap from the world's worst "news"rag, the Obune. Rebecca, dear, the Reagan economy, which lead to 25 years of overall prosperity, did not lead us to where we are at today.
Anyway, while Reagan was one of the best presidents we ever had, I do not believe it is necessary to put aside $1 million to celebrate his birthday. States, towns and the feds can celebrate it however they wish without it costing taxpayers a $1 million, though to be honest $1 million is nothing in regard to government spending.

Some of us actually think a million dollars IS a lot of money. Can't they just order a cake, have a photo op and call it a day?
When I think of what a million dollars would mean to, say, the Meals on Wheels program that's been pared down, or a Head Start chapter... I have to say I'm offended.

If Reagan were alive, I doubt if he would want this $1 Million spent. Likewise, he is probably rolling over in his grave having a federal gov't building named after him.
.
I find it interesting that all the dems voted for this. If there is gov't money to be spent, the dems are lining up to do it. As bad as the GOP was from 2001-06, the democrats are true pros at this.

Raygun was a liar and a hypocrite just like you are, Trickledown. He railed against the Fed gov't and yet never once did he offer to give up those big paychecks he was getting from the Fed gov't all those years.

Reagan did nothing for my family while he was here. Why would I want to spend money glorifying the man who made us live paycheck to paycheck. We barely scraped by while his was in charge. Aren't we already paying for his library?

Same as the unprecedented efforts to squelch talk show hosts (even paid TV ads against Limbaugh, with some in Spanish), the Left is out to pre-emptively trash Jindal and any other percieved threats, even a shameful attack on the legacy of Ronald Reagan.
-
Barack mantains his internet army on the message boards and chatrooms, FaceBook, etc- and keeps the criminals of ACORN in reserve. If they destroy all past and potential future GOP rallying points, they might be able to hold off a resurgent Right in 2010.... but I doubt it.
-
For the record, Ronald Reagan was a man of valour, honor, and principle. In contrast, Mr Obama has a record of consistently adopting pragmatic, self-serving platforms that get him the power and positions that serve his aspirations... first and foremost.
-
Obama had spoken during the campaign of reaching an accommodation with determined and aggressive foes of the United States, such as N.Korea, Iran and Syria... exactly the kind of appeasement of an insatiable enemy that Reagan warned us about for years.
-
Reagan created over 20M jobs…growing the country’s real GDP by almost 30% in the process. Those kind of results makes one wonder why Obama’s trillion-dollar spending plan would impress ANY-body, with his pledged 3.5M new and “saved” jobs (whatever those are)… a paltry figure 16M jobs shy of The Gipper’s towering accomplishment.
-
Ronald Reagan gave 8 of the best years this country's ever seen.
-
This misguided serial-opportunist Obama couldn't hold The Gipper's jockstrap.

Little cranky today? Monthly visitor? Did he give up his paychecks? I'm sure $400K would have made a big difference. Get a Clue.

Honestly, I understand that time and denial make us temper our visions of the past...The 9 inch Trout that becomes the 16 inch mega Trout over time...But just as we call out that exaggeration, why is it that we never call out the flawed, over exaggerated Reagan myth??
Reagan spent more money than all President's prior to him resulting in a deficit larger than all previous Presidents combined...
The tax legislation that passed in 1984 was more Dick Gephardt's than Ronald Reagans!
He had such poor performance in his Cabinet in his first term that he loaded up with Democrats in his 2nd term!
His 8 years began the cycle of Gordon Geko and Wall Street greed as well as a crime rate that grew and grew under he and Bush Sr. before Clinton finally got it under control...
I could go on and on about the real legacy of the man, but it doesn't matter because hero worship appears blind...
Not to mention he was the one that created the Evangelical wing of the GOP blurring the lines between Church and State and ensuring people like me will not vote GOP...You can talk of fiscal, small government Republicans all you want, but until the GOP drops Social issues out of Politics, it is destined to be a fringe party...
He was a good orator, he used sound bites to distract from the realities...
But in the end, he benefited from a good Congress, a land locked Soviet Union that had already bankrupted itself and the Pope's influence on his native Eastern Europe to end the Cold War.
