Republicans to Obama: We have ideas. You ignore them: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

President Barack Obama yesterday told Republicans, politely, to put up or shut up when it comes to his proposed $3.6 trillion federal budget.

In asking for their ideas, he told the opposition party that just saying no was not a responsible position.

Republicans have their response in the form of a video statement to the president by House Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner in which he reminds the president that the Republicans have offered ideas recently for an economic stimulus which Democrats rejected.

Congressional Republicans are fighting back against Democratic attempts to define them as the "party of no." They'd like the Democrats, instead, to be cast as the "party of no" for rejecting Republican approaches to helping the economy.

As for Republican ideas about Obama's budget proposal, Boehner essentially tells the president "we're working on them" but he provided some broad outlines.

An excerpt:

"Families and small businesses across America are hurting, and they're counting on both parties in Washington to provide real solutions to help create jobs and end this recession. Mr. President, you've submitted your budget, and we appreciate you seeking input from Republicans on how it can be improved.

"As you'll recall, our Republican Whip Eric Cantor and I personally delivered to you our Republican stimulus alternative during a White House meeting. Unfortunately, that plan was rejected by Washington Democrats, even though it would have created 6.2 million jobs according to an economic model developed by your own advisor, Dr. Christina Romer. That's twice the jobs at half the cost of the trillion-dollar spending bill you ultimately signed into law.

"Republicans are eager to offer better solutions on the budget as well. Mr. President, with all due respect: your budget spends too much, taxes too much, and borrows too much, and that's going to do further harm to our economy at a time when it desperately needs our help.

"We believe there's a better way - better solutions to restore some fiscal sanity here in Washington while encouraging more job creation and more investment. Our alternative, which is being drafted as we speak by Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and others, will reflect core principles that should guide us as our nation works to emerge from this crisis stronger than ever.

"First, our budget alternative will help create and protect jobs by letting families and small businesses keep more of what they earn.

"Second, our budget will make sure the federal budget doesn't grow faster than family budgets. Americans are making tough spending decisions every day. It's time for Washington to do the same...

Dear President Obama.......we would like you to consider the same tired old ideas that brought us to this disaster. Please ignore the fact that we conservatives took our deficit from 5 to 10 trillion in normal years.

ps...we hope you fail!

The Republicans will, of course, propose tax cuts. According to the GOP tax cuts will do the following - cause Oprah to lose weight, make rainbows sprout out of billionaires tushes, cure cancer, balance budgets, walk your dog, make the whole world hold hands and sing about Coke, grant every American their very own dragon so they can fly to work and save money on gas, make your reproductive organs larger, etc etc.

Boehner is right. If the Republicans can stand behind their core values (which they largely lost during the Bush years), they have the answer to get us out of this terrible plight.

What the congressionals Dems and White House are doing in the area of increased taxes and more major social programs during a period of weak economy is exactly the opposite of what our nation currently needs.

Please, restore the sanity in Washington!

Well put, " bill r ". These NeoCons want to sell us some more of the snake oil that the Moronic President was selling, for the last 8 years !! No, they had more than a chance to do right by America, instead, they stuck it to America !! Now, all of a sudden, they got religion, now that they got rid of Craig, and maybe, Vetter !! What kind of nonsense are the Bush-McCain-Limbaugh cabal going to try and sandbag America with, now !! Let President Obama do the job he was elected to do: Clean up the mess, the ridiculous Republicans, have left behind !! The best the Republicans can do right now, is, to support President Obama's initiatives, advice and consent !! The Republicans have already did their damage to our country !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I think the recover plan for AIG should be stopped now and the money should go back to the government. I also think instead of helping all these companies that are failing & getting bonuses we should help the American people, why not give all of us a stimulus plan so we can continue to live in our homes, have jobs & thereby will spend money? What is wrong with this country? We are always helping others and no one is helping us, not even our government. Give the money to the people & stop giving money to these corporations that are just giving themselves bonuses for screwing up!

My thoughts were already posted at 11:19AM by bill r.

I would appreciate an explanation for the downside of spending on education that wrests power from the entrenched interests and promotes some of the ideas Republicans have been talking about for years. When Republicans distance themselves from Obama on education they distance themselves from their own ideas. If that is smart politics, I'd like to know what planet they think they are on.

Republicans have had no credibility with me not because their ideas are not good but because they have ulterior motives as can be seen by their lack of interest in Obama's approach to education. All they wanted was to dethrone the teachers union and they care little about public education.

I think the recover plan for AIG should be stopped now and the money should go back to the government. Well we know one thing for sure, any plan the republicans have won't help the middle class, only the rich.

"Second, our budget will make sure the federal budget doesn't grow faster than family budgets."

Dear Mr. Boehner:

What the hell were you doing when President Bush and both houses of Congress were in control by Republicans 2001 - 2006 and the federal budget rose 45%? But now that Senator Obama has been elected president and is trying to clean up YOUR MESS, suddenly you give a damn about government spending?

Please, just STFU!

I like the Republican idea.
Like all responsible Americans I am going to take any tax savings the Republicans can get for me and use it pay bills that I would normally have to pay anyway.
I know Bush was hoping I'd go out and buy a new computer but
I used Bush 600 dollar rebate I got last year to help pay my monthly mortgage.
Will I use the money to stimulate the economy?
Not in this economic environment.
Better to save any tax savings than spend right now with so much uncertainty.
The only way you can guarantee that the money get plowed into the economy is to let the government spend it. Some of it will get wasted ...but it will get spent.

Mr. President, We are offering the same crap ideas that got us in this mess in the first place. Why are you rejecting us? We want to dig a deeper hole, we want to creat more failure, so our Leader Rush will be right. Let us help you, John Boner

""Second, our budget will make sure the federal budget doesn't grow faster than family budgets. Americans are making tough spending decisions every day. It's time for Washington to do the same..."

This is from the leader of the Republicans in the House. Be afraid, be very afraid if these "ideas" are ever put into place. Boehner still doesn't understand that there are different economics models when comparing family and government policies. What works for the family unit does not work for government.
Quoting Boehner on economics is like quoting Einstein on how to find a mailbox; neither has the faintest idea of what they are talking about.

I'm guessing the Einstein analogy will go over most of your reader's heads.

Fault the media-television and press for not putting forth the republicans' ideas.

There is a definite favoritism for the democrats and their policies.

Maybe is the media actually let the other side give their ideas to the public a happy balance can be met.

Who knows, maybe the republicans have a lot of wrong things in their proposals.

We don't know because the media fails to present ideas, programs of the opposing party.

What about libertarians? What are they presenting?

The media has failed this country.

Looking for fiscally conservative democrats, republicans, liberterians. Or is that just a wrong statement?

Get rid of the manipulation of the media.

Yes, the Republicans do have ideas:

Tax cuts for the extremely wealthy.

Torture.

Union busting so that the american worker makes less.

Telling the unemployed that they are on thier own.

More tax cuts for the extremely wealthy.

Pretending like the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan don't cost any money so deficits look smaller.

Gutting environmental regulations.

Did we mention tax cuts for the extremely wealthy?

The "We used the formula your own advisor made and it says we'll make a bajillion jobs!" canard has been shot down and debunked repeatedly.
===

It says a lot that the GOP has to rely on repeating a lie over and over and over again when trying to make their case.

Your ideas over the past 8 years haven't been working too well Mr. Boehner. Your ideas have pretty much failed this country. You lost the last 2 elections big. You may lose again next year Stop you whining Mr. Boehner. You are a fake. We need new ideas and new direction. By the way...how about a 25% pay cut for you and a reduction in your health care coverage.

This talking point that the Republican alternative stimulus plan of no actual stimulus and a bunch of corporate tax cuts would have created twice as many jobs at half the cost, and even Obama's advisor Romer says so, is a flat out lie. Romer has debunked it. They made it up. It sounds too stupid to be true because it is.

Plus I love how they keep saying "we have good ideas! Why aren't you listening to our good ideas?" and then proceed not to actually submit any new ideas. Their one idea is tax cuts. Sorry, that isn't doing to do it.

We've heard the delusional Republican mantra for years - VooDoo Trickle-down economics. Using this redistribution of wealth from the poor to the wealthy and cutting taxes to the bone along with enormous defense spending, both Bush and Reagan managed to double the national debt. Why would anyone in their right mind, including the rich, want more of the same?

You're lying again, Boner!

"Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) for admitted that he has advised his fellow House Republicans to no longer think of themselves as "legislators," but rather as mere "communicators."
.
"As I told my colleagues, we don't have enough votes to legislate," Boehner said, according to Saturday's New York Times. "We are not in the majority. We are not kind-of in the minority; we are in a hole. They ought to get the idea out of their minds that they are legislators. But what they can be is communicators."

Now THAT is a good motivational speaker! I know if I were a Republican, I wouldn't want to do anything at all, taking them from the "party of no" to the "party of nothing"

The Republicans have apparently decided that their role is to simply oppose anything President Obama tries to do without offering any actual ideas of their own. I guess they figure that's been working out well for them so far:

"Since President Obama unveiled his budget last month, Republicans have been relentlessly attacking his comprehensive proposals. Last week, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) said that Obama "should be focusing on the ‘economic crisis,’ as opposed to holding four-hour meetings on health care." Today on ABC’s This Week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) kept up the drumbeat, saying, "It taxes too much, it spends too much, it borrows too much."
"However, host George Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed McConnell for a comprehensive Republican alternative budget. Each time, McConnell simply attacked Obama’s plan. He said that he and his colleagues would be offering amendments to "reframe" what the Democrats have proposed, but don’t plan on offering a comprehensive plan."

The Republicons don't have any idea's...other than their old standby (tax cuts for the rich) and their on their merry way to going down as being some of the most ignominious asshats in American history.

Of course Mr Boehner says here is true and correct- and Obama is simply hectoring the GOP, attempting to label them is "bad" if they oppose his birdbrained schemes.
-
President Obama has zero business experience or sense (unless you count pay-to-play arrangements or public-housing scandals with felon Tony Rezko). He put-together a cabinet with no CEOs or anybody else that could upstage him. He unviels wild spending plans embedded with pork-n-welfare totalling trillions of dollars... when we are already running record deficits.
-
After this, he holds some fake summit and with no sense of irony portrays himself as a deficit-hawk.
-
SOME journalists and talk-show hosts come out publicly against his plans... so he launches attacks, including paid TV ads against them. (can you imagine the uproar if W had done this?)
-
When the GOP members of Congress that Obama promised for over a year to work with in a new, post-partisan manner voice their concerns, he tells them "I'll trump you on that" and "I won". -
Obama then employed shameless and reckless fear-mongering to frighten legislators and the public into backing his porkulus spending binge... effective politically, but often inaccurate historically... and betraying very poor leadership qualities and scruples.
-
This arrogant charlatan is ramming-through a far-left agenda few want, and that he knows we can't afford, so later will "have to" crank-up taxes to eye-watering Swedish levels ... thereby running through the back-door the soaking of the job-creating "rich" that he has long dreamed of.
-
As for 2012, the GOP could win 40+ states running Gilbert Gottfreid.

Every GOP congresscritter needs to be asked if they agree with Rush Limbaugh that the AIG executives deserve millions of dollars in bonuses, paid by American taxpayers, even when they caused massive losses and failure for the company.

Long live the myth of conservatives and small government.....has happened except for Nixon. That's right....the messiah Ronnie Raygun was a fake.

Republicans are almost as dangerous when they're out of power (Timothy McVeigh) as they are when they're in power (Iraq, torture, war crimes).

From Reaganite Republican(those would be the bad Actors on the far right):

President Obama has zero business experience or sense (unless you count pay-to-play arrangements or public-housing scandals with felon Tony Rezko)"

Well, the last MBA president sure showed those dems how to turn a surplus into a doubling of the national debt in 8 years. Speaking of which: Has any company or country under Bush's control EVER made money. I know he BKd Harkin energy and another oil company he ran, plus while running the Texas Rangers traded Sammy Sosa( who is a home run hitting BUM) for nothing.

This is an easy one RR. Name one company that George W(ORST) Bush has ever run successfully.

If Boner and the GOPer's had any new good idea's they wouldn't have lost the last two elections in a landslide.

Perhaps if Boehner had been part of a search for a saner fiscal policy when Bush was President, his "ideas" would be more believable now. I don't recall a whole lot of Republican outrage over the kind of spending throughout the past 8 years that put us in the mess we're in now, unless of course you count the post-Bush revisionists that waited until late in 2008 to express their concerns. As for right now? All the "ideas" I've seen from Republicans is "I want Obama to fail." Looks they're taking Reagan's ideal of drowning the government in the bathtub a bit over-literally. "Smaller" might be fine, but they want to destroy the whole government.
.
That kind of idea, we can do without.

We want his vital org long form birth certificate and other documents !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is a fraud !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With Pleasure:

Hello, I am an ignorant, scared bigot. I believe every thing talk radio tells me. I truly believe there is a world wide Muslim/ Marxist/ Media/ Bankers conspiracy which has made Obama President. I am incapable of constructing complete sentences and I can not spell.

President Obama claims he wants input from both sides of the aisle in Congress.

If this is factual then he should inform Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to at least allow the Republicans the opportunity to present their ideas to Congress.

The AIG mess was created when Pelosi and Reid created a bill without any Republican input.

Obama cannot call for bi-partainship and then allow one side to be completely ignored!

Who can beat an idea that keeps deficit around 10 percent of GDP? That sure is a winner

Kelly, my sweet, I don't know how to break this to you.
The direct approach probably is best.

It is McCain who is not the "natural born citizen".

He was born on a barge in the Panama Canal.

By C section.

The vault copy of his birth certificate is in the First National Bank of Panama City, Panama. Somewhere down there.

There, there, Kelly.

It is time to wise up! So many people hate the rich but fail to realize how much they contribute to our economy (their taxes amount to 50% of their income). Small business owners hire many people. . . if they fail, many more jobs will be lost.

You will not get this information on ABC or the Huffington Post. As for NBC or MSBC they no longer have any creditability whatsoever.

Obama is real change. He changed from passing bills with 3000 earmarks to bills that have 9000 earmarks.

And his entitlement programs will bankrupt America. If you think health care is expensive now, wait until it's free.

President Obama's budget scares the heck out of me. Sure would llike to know what the republican alternatives are. Tonight he mentioned that the critics haven't come up with a budget of their own. Let's get the republican version out. If Obama was serious (and I think he intends to let the crisis ride until he gets a socialist agenda) he would have addressed the toxic assets immediately and to create jobs and get the ecomony going he would have moved a serious energy policy that includes drilling for oil immediately. Hydrogen, by the way, looks better every day as a road to take. His budget(Obama) is a non starter. It's true that the deficit shot up last fall but before that the deficits the U.S. was trying to manage were significantly less than his targeted "cut in half" level. His deficit levels are completely unsatisfactory and unwanted. Stop the spending and bailouts and let the market self adjust.

In case some of you NObama supporters have forgotten; the US of A is a capitalist, free enterprise society. Our strength is derived from this very important fact. Nobama is pushing forward ideas and solutions that have been tried and have failed in many European countries. Yet for some strange reason, he seems to think that he can make them work here. The fact is, his agenda is a SOCIALIST agenda. You can argue all you want. You can specualte all you want. Fact is; we're stuck with this inexperienced idiot and his ideas until the next presidential election. The housing crisis was caused by Clinton when he pressured the lending industry to relax lending rules so that everyone could afford the American Dream; even if they really couldn't. Now NObama wants to continue that legacy as well as several other misguided attempts to entitle even more citizens and freeloaders alike to get a share of more government handouts. Hell, why work when you can get money for free from the rich. All you need to do is look to Robin 'Obama' Hood. Anyway, the pendulum will swing in the other direction eventually. People, including independents, will realize that they made a mistake in 2008. The mistake will be corrected in 2012. Hopefully the damage that NObama is doing, and will continue doing, can be reversed.

b. hussein, your arrogant what you’re doing will not work; I pray you fail at everything you do even if it does destroy this country, does it really matter anyway? What you have done in less than 45 days will be next to impossible to reverse. Historically free countries have lasted only 200 years and we have exceeded our time. The freedom we had was good while it lasted.

In response to 'ornery'; the facts are as follows:
Any child born outside of the United States, who for reasons of travel, vacation, duty assignment of the parent(s).....etc..., and would have otherwise been born in the United States, is considered to be a citizen of the United States upon return. The parents of course have the option to claim nationality of the foreign country on behalf of the newborn child if they wish. So just because Senator McCain was born in Panama, on a barge, does not mean he is not a US citizen. His parents, upon returning home, made sure he was a U.S. citizen; by law; as entitled. Obama, on the other hand, is not covered by this situation. He was born outside of the U.S. and his parents did not choose to elect U.S. citizenship for him.

Remember the Carter years, high interest on mortgages,Banks closing,People out of work, gas lines,Then my President Ronald Regan came into power and saved America. The Clinton's and Barney Frank got us into our banking problem, or did we forget about the non verification loans, variable interest rates that Frank and Fannie Mae/Mac created, and the greedy banks that bought these loans trying to make a buck on risky loans from people that never should have approved to begin with crying foul. Did we also forget that Frank,Clinton, Obama, yes Obama got campaign donations from these groups in the 100s of thousands, why aren't they given this money back.Democratic control in Congress got us into this mess, or did we forget that the democrats have controlled Congress for how long? Mr. Obama needs to listen to the republician's and take the example of Ronald Regan, not Jimmie Carters or Teddy Roovervelts mistakes. I believe he doesn't care at all what the Republician's think, he has his own Socialist agenda and no one is going to stop him from his plan except the Americian voter, I say stop the lies,Impeach before it is to late.

People have to start to realize that the Republican Party has made large movements away from the party of Bush and will continue to do so.

The grassroots Conservative movement is starting to take over the Republican Party. People want their country back.

People don't want a far left President spending us to an "make it fair utopia" oblivion.

I am amazed that so many want to blame the Republicans and Bush for all the woes in this country. Do you not remember in April of 2001 when Bush was taking an early and strong stand against the risk involved in sub-prime mortgages? Where is your outrage that Barney Frank's ex-boyfriend was on the board of FannieMae and made millions thanks to Frank's corrupting support of sub-prime mortgages? Where is your outrage that Franklin Raines made $90 million dollars as the head of FannieMae over the last 5 years - why isn't ACORN driving by his house?

I suggest all you "blamers" consider that maybe you just haven't really done your homework and maybe you cannot honestly say that you really, really know what all went on the last 8 years and how much of the spending was done by the democrats (community reinvestment act) and the Medicare Prescription plan which was a compromise between both parties.

Also, why is you enjoy so much the thought of taxing the extremely wealthy so much, so as to punish them? And yet you are quite silent regarding the complete tax dodging done by Rangel, Chris Dodd (whose wife lives in CT but works in Bermuda, a tax haven, for AIG), Geithner (yeah right he didn't "understand" that a swanky summer camp for his son is not considered "child care"), etc. ad nauseum. Maybe you all would have much more credibility if you would hold those in charge accountable for their own purposeful efforts to avoid paying taxes instead of making wealthy, successful people the bad guys.

I would like to know, if you made say $10 million dollars a year, would you rather pay 60% of that to the government so that it could be wasted, watered down, skimmed off of, or would you rather give 30% to the govt and take the other 30% and donate it yourself, to who you want to donate to, to who you want to help, to help what you are passionate about, since after all , you earned the money? Why don't ya'll think about that?

P.S. I am a middle-class American and the Bush tax cuts helped me and my family tremendously - we actually were able to fix stuff, by a few wants, and save money for college. I feel bad that none of you can admit that you were helped by the tax cuts and I cannot believe that you can't see the writing on the wall with all the liberal agenda that your expenses will go up about 20% plus - might want to open your eyes, think, use common sense and logic, add the numbers up, and then maybe your eyes would be opened.

I'll take any tax cut the Republicans can get through and if half of the money is spent and half is saved or used to pay bills GREAT! Not one dime of that money will be wasted! But if we allow the Obama administration to filter all our hard earned money throught government programs we KNOW at LEAST half will be wasted and the rest will be spent on failed programs, funneled to pet projects, handed to those who have gotten themselves into bad situations through their own personal decisons and now don't want to take responsibility for the consequences of those decisions, or just plain "lost" in transition! So let us keep our own money and let big businesses and those who made bad decisions take their punishment! I'm not interested "investing" in Obama's idea "fairness", I'm interested in working hard and being allowed to keep the greatest majority of what I earn!

The liberal comments are amusing in a sad way. It's stunning how so many have no idea how our own government works. The congress controls the purse, so the budget shortfalls and nat'l debt can be attributed to them, not the presidential administration. The U.S. economy started to tank in 2007, the same year newly elected Democrats to congress were getting seated (including Obama). How does the American electorate react? Why, put in more of the people who created the mess - more Democrats in congress!

For those pointing out the increase in nat'l debt and bemoaning the doubling during Bush's eight years, stand by; Obama will do that in about half the time (source: Wall Street Journal analysis).

For those who think Bush provided tax cuts to just the rich are fooling themselves. Compare your tax return this year with next year's - I'm hunkering down for at least a 30% increase in my family's effective tax rate, and we are certainly NOT rich!

To all Americans: Good luck, and watch your wallet!

If you think this stimulus is going to work, maybe you should talk to some of the people whose backs you want to ride on. We're tired of packing everyone who wants a free ride! Maybe everyone who is standing in line waiting for BO to solve their problems, should stop thinking the world owes them a living. Our money is out of this market, invested in other areas and in other countries. There are more like me who are not willing to "make the sacrafice" so the rest of the population can ride on our coat tails. And if Dems or Rep think BO's plan is bad, wait for the International Banking/monetary system. Wake up people. Who do you think will run it? Run by concensus? When you place your ability to operate in the hands of someone else you will fall. If you are unhappy with the quality of products and safety issues relating to other countries- wait until they are the majority in the World Finance. You'll swallow the contaminated food and your kids will eat the lead paint whether you like it or not. Those countries are not democracys and could care less what one member wants. Buyer beware.

Thank you Mr. Obama for leaving me more debt to pay when I grow up then even the Republicans did. My Grandpa says you ran on a platform for changing Washington so I would not have to pay for the debt created by the Republicans. Now, I not only have to pay for their debt, but the debt you are creating. Then you will increase my Dad's taxes and then my taxes will go up, when I have to pay them, leaving me less then what you and my Grandpa had. You should have the courage of your convictions and do what you said you would do, clean up Washington spending so when I grow up I will be able to give my children good educations and nice homes. Right now I am only 2 months old, but I will end up paying for this reckless spending your are doing. I wish I could vote, I would vote you out for lying to the American people, but that seems to be a common trait for people in Washington, whether Republicans or Democrats. I hope my generation does something better than yours is doing.

Oh yes Mr. President, keep spending money like there's no tomorrow and there won't be a tomorrow. We will come out of this, but in what shape will we be. I can't wait for the next four years to criple the US and those who voted for you will see what a community organizer and divider you are...I have realized it and will never vote for another Democrat until they change!

Third time tried this, your stupid anti spam letter looks a lot like an I to me but get message place correct letter in box!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You Very Much!!!!!!! I say IMPEACH The whole bunch throw them all out. Don't leave J. Bidden, he will be worse. For the record I Didn't vote for this certified Idiot. But I know some who did, and they wish they haden't.
