The Swamp

He will not be "Sir Ted,'' but he will receive an honorary knighthood: British Prime Minister Gordon Brown today is announcing the honor for the ailing Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass), known in Britain for his advocacy of peace in Northern Ireland.

Real knighthood has been reserved for the likes of Paul McCartney and Elton John. Only the true British knights are not entitled to the honorific of "Sir" or "Dame.''

The British government said today that Kennedy will be awarded an honorary knighthood for his service to U.S.-U.K. relations and to Northern Ireland. After Brown delivered an address to a joint meeting of the U.S. House and Senate today, Kennedy's son, Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), stepped up to shake the prime minister's hand.

Knighthoods are bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II, the honorees chosen by the government or an advisory committee.

"Kennedy, scion of an Irish-American political dynasty, is known in Britain for his involvement in the long process that led to Northern Ireland's 1998 Good Friday peace accord,'' the AP reports from London.

The 77-year-old brother of the late President John F. Kennedy has served in the Senate since 1962. He is being treated for a brain tumor.

Other Americans who have received honorary knighthoods: Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

It was in 1997 that McCartney, the best-known surviving face and bassist of the Beatles who had once joked about smoking marijuana in the Buckingham Palace toilets, faced Queen Elizabeth in knighthood for helping to revolutionize pop music. Elton John, singer of the "Candle in the Wind'' tribute at Princess Diana's funeral, was knighted in '97, too.

That's not true. I am watching it live and Gordon Brown said he will be knighted as SIR Edward Kennedy. He's NOT supposed to be SIR if it is only "honorary".

Say it ain't so, Teddy ! Nothing from the British Crown, but get out of Eire. They have raped and pillaged, their way across countless countries and many pages of history !! The least told story, the one of Eire, and her noble struggle to maintain her existence, is one of ethnic cleansing, before the word was coined, centuries before !! The claim of a famine, was in fact, a ruse, just look at the ships' manifests that were leaving Eire's shores, for England, during the time of this fictitious " famine ". They were laden with Irish food stuffs, grains, meats !! It has been a sad hoax, history has perpetuated, to the benefit of the British government and at the cost of Eire's citizens.
My deepest hope is that, Senator Kennedy, a life-long supporter of Eire, will remember her killed and murdered, at the hands of that great civilized nation, England !! Let him refuse this " award ", in the name of all those dead souls, that died for Eire's struggle for freedom, against the English brigands !!
I hope, Senator Kennedy, you are holding your own, against your illness and you are in my prayers. Good luck, " Old Warrior !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Queen Elizabeth mis-uses these honorary Knighhoods all the time. This is just another quite gross example of that.

Be careful Ted Kennedy. No matter how well meaning the Senator's honorary knighthood is the Article 1 , Section 9 of the US Constitution says:" No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state."

I love it!! The Swamp Censor Thugs censored my post!! What ARE THE odds???
We'll try this again: I didn't know knighthood was given to murderers.
Now, Swamp Censor Thugs: Was or was not Mary Jo Copechne in Ted Kennedy's car? Did she or did she not drown in Kennedy's car? Was Ted Kennedy in the car, too, and did he not somehow manage to escape while poor Mary Jo drowned? How many days passed before Ted Kennedy reported the accident? At the very least, Ted Kennedy committed unlawful accidental death. If he was drunk at the time, what happened could be charged as murder or manslaughter. Please, Swamp Censor Thugs, stop letting your own biases get in then way of reality or facts. Though, you are Chicago Libune employees and there facts do take a back seat to Libune biases.

Well, well, well, maybe this SOB can take Brown for a ride in his car, be sure that he doesn't go near any WATER !!!
I wonder if Mary Jo's kids got to go to school !!!! Oh no they never had the chance !! The world will a better place soon.
God help him !!!!!

The Brits want America to throw more of our money to them and to the rest of the world. They are afraid that America will (gasp) think of Americans first during the Rescue Plan. Brits are here to sing sweet nothings in order to sway Obama, the House and Senate to screw Americans and to love the EU more. Keep Gordon Brown and Tony Blair out of American politics. They will not be able to reelect Obama--only we will. Why a knighthood for Kennedy now--now when the Brits are close to a Depression and want more of OUR money? Why not years ago, or months ago when it was announced that Kennedy was ill?

Sorry, BBC, the only thing that comes to mind when I hear Edward Kennedy's name mentioned is the death of Mary Jo Kophechne. How on earth can this man be awarded a honorary knighthood. No doubt Gordon Brown is behind this in his bid to inflate his flagging popularity

Kick him out of the Senate:

"No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state."

Ross at 2:01. Precisely.

If Teddy's a knight, what does this make Mary Jo Kopechne? Does Ann Bolyn come to mind? Same conclusion but a different means. Ann lost her head; Teddy left Mary Jo to drown. Obviously, British standards for knighthood are rather relaxed.

40 years ago, John D, 40 years ago it was investigated; it wasn't murder you idiot.

Teddy Kennedy is a selfish, senile old man. He should have retired years ago, but surely now, considering both his age and his health, he isn't being fair to his constituents. He politiked to gain a Senate seat for his niece so she could continue to promote his family's legacy, which hasn't been enhanced by the personal problems of the male members of the clan.

Now this bizarre knighthood. T

Dear Res, Senator Edward Kennedy.
I wish you Great health and long life. My family from my parents to my children is great admirer for your noble work, concern and care for down trodden people .When I heard that British Government, especially British royal family has a plan to award you knighthood. Sir, please do not degrade your great service to humanity, your great sacrifice for poor people and your whole life you worked for common people and at this stage of your life you want, or you are ready to accept this kind of award it has no value but sold out morale . Please refuse and maintain American pride, Irish dignity, and Democratic Value. I with all my respect and admiration wishes you Enlightenment on this issue, and long life.

I love Ted, but we have a problem here. A leading Lawmaker accepting a title of nobility from The Queen of England! So, what did we fight The Revolutionary War for? Either the title must be rejected, he must step down, or Congress must hold a vote and approve. Americans need to not only read the Constitution, but understand the meaning. Read Section 9, article 8 and get real. 'Nuff said!

We British are not overly impressed either. Ignoring Mr Fitzgerald's childish and ignorant rant, we are not happy that Sen. Kennedy, who was somewhat partial to the murderers, torturers, drug dealers and robbers of the IRA, has been honoured in this way. Honourary knighthoods should be given to those who deserve them.

Stewie's Stuufed Animal,
.
"it was investigated; it wasn't murder you idiot."
.
If you think that was investigated, I have some Kansas ocean front property to sell you.

Be knighted would just give Teddy another excuse to not save a woman that was drowning since his suit of armor might rust.

Don, don't forget pumping the gross national product of India into the Bank of England all those centuries.
Lots of colonies have not so fond memories of the Brits.

However, don't forget who the early settlers of US were.

By early, read 17th century.

I find the announcement by Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Edward M. Kennedy's forthcoming elevation to the (Honorary) Knighthood by the British "Crown" to be ill advised and undeserved. Senator Kennedy is an unindicted perpetrator of the criminally negligent homicide of Mary Jo Kopechne. As such, he deserves no such honor.

Mr. Brown comes to our shores, hat in hand, for an audience with our newly anointed messiah, whom he hopes to convince to assist in a "World Bailout". Frankly sir, considering the amount of American blood left on the beaches of France (and elsewhere) during World War II, not to mention World War I as well, I hardly think the US owes Europe anything.

I suppose the Queen shall feel compelled to carry out this farce of a knighthood ceremony but there are many of us in the former "colonies" who will wonder if Her Majesty has gone 'round the bend!

Rupert, it was investigated and found that he did indeed manage to escape from his car but he then quietly went home and said nothing about Mary Jo drowning for how long? Quite some time. Teddy is a coward and a snake. He can never change that. He failed his test in life.

Mark, I would greatly appreciate it if you would investigate whether Congress has, or is planning to, pass a bill allowing this knighthood to be accepted under our Constitution.

As others have noted, Kennedy must either get permission from Congress, decline the knighthood, or resign his Senate seat.

The relevant passage of the Constitution:

No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no
Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall,
without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument,
Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or
foreign State.

three questions:
1. what comes to mind when we think of knighthood? chivalry
2. what comes to mind when we think of Ted Kennedy? chappaquidick
3. Is there any possible way to link chivalry with chappaquidick? no

Sir Chicken of Chappaquiddick

Did they give a knighthood to Ted Bundy too?

Since American politicians are precluded from accepting any titles of nobility as included within the Constitution, would appear that this is another political move of the global government to negate our Constitution, actually.

And if Kennedy were to formally accept (although now deceased from last nights reports), was guilty of treason at the time of the acceptance.
