A legend is putting in his final day today at The Des Moines Register, before he becomes the director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

David Yepsen has been sizing up presidential candidates for more than three decades as the newspaper's political writer and later political columnist. His final column will appear in the Sunday Des Moines Register.

As someone who greatly benefited from his mentoring at the Register, it is hard to image the campaign for the Iowa caucuses without his work appearing routinely on the pages of "The Newspaper Iowa Depends On." In the video below, he reflects on presidential politics and the caucuses.
