People are missing the point in President Barack Obama's encounters with other worlds leader and the responses that Obama is getting.
The point, says Obama adviser David Axelrod: "Anti-Americanism isn't cool any more.''
This follows criticism for Obama for not standing up to hostile Latin American leaders -- shaking the hand of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez at the Summit of the Americas over the weekend, welcoming Cuban President Raul Castro's offer to put "everything on the table'' and talk about things with the United States.
"I think some people misinterpreted what happened this past weekend," Axelrod told a group, as reported by the Huffington Post's Sam Stein. "I think the real message of what happened this past weekend with the Cuban regime's response to the president's decision on remittances, or the overtures from president Chavez. I think what has happened is that anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore."
Axelrod was addressing the Religious Action Center, a Reform Judaism organization that seeks to influence society and politics. He spoke of Obama's experience in Europe as well -- with positive responses from leaders and the led alike.
""It has been just 100 days,"Axelrod said. "There have been a lot of difficult decisions to be made and some we never anticipated. The pirate thing was not in the handbook, in any way...
"When you look at the fact that the Cubans for the first time are saying we are wiling to talk about democracy, human rights and political prisoners... When you look at the fact that Chavez has said we want to talk about returning ambassadors and restoring relationships, these are first steps,'' he said. "We are not naïve we know there is a long way to go... but I believe we have made great progress."

It's going to take a long time to repair the damage that Bush and the Republican party did to our image the past eight years but President Obama has put us on the right path.

Does this mean that Michelle is going to straighten out her act?

So that's what foreign policy is to these guys. A popularity contest. We make our decisions based on whether Castro and Chavez will think we're "cool" or not. Glad to see "the grown-ups are back in charge," as the Left is so fond of saying.

The Repugnants belittled Obama's community organizer skills pre election..
What more of an important skill could you have in a world community?
Thanks to Shrub Jr and Darth, it is the USA's past aggression and opression that has caused the worlds ills.

You know... I get the feeling that this guy may be the real president now.
Obama does 2-3 public events per day. He's a PR face.
SOMEONE has to be doing his real job. I think it's this guy or Axelrod. Another true believer.
Say goodnight, America.

So that means that Obama, Michelle, David Ayers, Rev. Wright and the rest of the left wing numbnuts are no longer cool?
Posted by: Dusty | April 20, 2009 6:31 PM
it seems to be pretty cool for the Tea Party crowd

I'm still trying to understand that the Obama administration says one thing and means another.
Things like Freedom of Choice and Fairness Doctrine still confuse me.
Now this. The Prez goes around the world apologizing for America and doing his global best to undo what we stand for, and Axelrod comes up with this explanation?
Odd, very odd.

Other countries, perceived prior enemies or not, should never have felt that "Americans" were the problem and not to be trusted. It is the American government owned completely by corporations, too fat congressman, and Israel that should never be trusted.

More spin from the king of spin. Anti-Americanism has existed since the inception of the USA. Many books have been written about it, many theories for it. No, even the Messiah can't eradicate it despite the delusions of the hope and change crowd, who seem unable to grasp the need for anti-Americanism as it serves a variety of purposes for a variety of nations and people.

Hillary was right on the money. Obama is naive.

No misunderstanding at all. Obama the Unqualified isn't for America, he is for himself. He does not have the best interests of the United States at the forefront. Never has, never will. Impeach!
Posted by: Darkwater | April 20, 2009 7:17 PM
OH No!!! If Anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore what will become of the democratic party.
Posted by: Paul | April 20, 2009 7:50 PM
So anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore?
So does this mean that Obama is going to sever his ties to William Ayers once and for all?

Thought Axelrod was too smart to made a remark like this. Guess he has developed a taste of Socialism while being in the White House, Wonder who will be next, Hillary?
Posted by: Inky | April 20, 2009 7:52 PM
Why does Chavez dislike the US? Could it be that the Bush Administration tried to overthrough Chavez after he was first democratically elected back in 2002?...Um yeah. Maybe the right-wing lunatic fringe should sit down, shut up, and start taking notes on how foreign policy is supposed to be conducted.
The war mongering "shoot first/ask questions later" foreign policy that the Neocon Rethugs used the last eight years is finished! Get over it, you chickenhawks!

.
Yeah, it is nice to see the grown ups back in charge, isn't it. Thank god we won't be wasting billions of dollars getting millions of innocent people killed because the adminstration decides that they want to trump up a war (Iraq) with someone just for the fun of it like the BushCo Republicans did.

Not the best choice of words by Axelrod. What's more descriptive is that Obama is very popular with the various leaders' constituents. Chavez is no fan of the U.S., but he's sucking up to Obama to please his home crowd. The protesters at the G8 said as much as well. The hard left and nationalists around the world continue to despise U.S. dominance. Anti-Americanism is alive and well. Obama's mass appeal just makes it more difficult for leaders to publicly indulge in it.

Interesting observation: re the Obama/Chavez handshake...
President Obama and America are being attacked for a handshake, but it is being done by a bunch of Right Wing, frightened children from the Republican Party like Pat Buchanan, Joke Scarborough, Nutty Right Wing Politicians, Talking Heads and Right Wing Reactionary "Strategists"....Anotherwards, the same frightened children who supported President G W Bush, who betrayed the Constitution and the Rule of Law and lawlessly invaded an innocent country. But, that is the reaction of Fear Filled Minds...on the right these days, as it always is.

The biggest "anti-American" out there is Obama himself. He does nothing but go to Europe, central America, Middle East, wherever and cite what he considers to be what's wrong about the United States...then apologizes for US! But notice, he always exempts himself. And why not? He was brought up in radical Indonesia so HE'S not responsible for how bad America is. In his mind, that is.

Obama got nothing from the G-20 despite his smiles, back slapping. He asked for soldiers in Afghanistan...he received trainers...people to help train Afghanis to farm, learn policing procedures.
Axelrod is losing his touch..."it's not cool to be unamerican.."
how sickening.
Obama speaks, the world kneels.
Obama is out of his league. He is a neophyte that is struggling.

Cool or not - sometimes our Presidents have to meet with some nasty folks. Roosevelt met Stalin. Nixon met Brezhnev and Mao. Even George Bush was seen palling around with Vladimir Putin. ..............

Yep, and during the last eight years, when they weren't invading countries based on trumped up intelligence, the Wingnut leadership was....kissing and shaking hands with our "enemies"?

If chicken-hawk Republicans like John Ensign and Gingrich quake with terror at the sight of President Obama engaging in polite small talk with Hugo Chavez at an international conference, it's a wonder they find the courage just to leave their house every morning.
What fearful quivering ninnies these Republicans are! In hysteria over the totally imaginary prospect of losing their assault weapons. Seeing the spectre of Socialism in Obama moving to rescue Wall Street. Insisting that illegal torture is the only means of protecting America in the world. Wetting their pants because of a few hundred Somali wretches in fishing boats. Treating gay marriage as something that somehow reduces their own civil rights and the numerous other fantasies that they make up to scare the Republican deadenders to death with every day.

I'm not surprised that the lunatic-left doesn't realize anti-Americanism existed long before Bush. The hope and change crowd is ignorant beyond belief.
