This is what we learned today at Arizona State University:

"Harvard was the first university to confer honorary degrees in 1692. Since then it has become a recognized function of degree granting institutions. Honorary degrees are an opportunity for universities to single out people who have made contributions to society.''

A certain "body of work'' is usally considered. It's the faculty that nominates recipients at Arizona State, and they have a committee to review and recommend candidates for the consideration of the president of the school. They only hand out two or three a year, but they have conferred more than 200 such degrees at Arizona State since 1940.

Among the honorees: Blake Edwards, 2005

("Body of work'' includes: Breakfast at Tiffany's, 1961, Pink Panther, 1963, 10, 1979.)

Cesar Chavez, 1992

Walter Cronkite, 1989

Art Buchwald, 1988

Mo Udall, 1987

Henry Cisneros, 1986

Erma Bombeck, 1980

George Romney, 1962

Barry Goldwater, 1961

But President Barack Obama? Delivering the commencement address at Sun Devil Stadium on May 13?

No degree for him.

When the school announced its commencement speaker, it called Obama's appearance a "historic event.''

But, asked about the eligibility of the "historic'' commencement speaker for an honorary degree, university spokeswoman Sharon Keeler said: "Because President Obama's body of work is yet to come, it's inappropriate to recognize him at this time.''

Art Buchwald.jpg

Apparently, however, Obama's body of work has preceded him at Notre Dame University, because when the president delivers a commencement address there, two days before his appearance in Arizona, the school will give him an honorary degree.

Notre Dame, which hands out up to a dozen a year, always gives one to its commencement speaker.

The Notre Dame appearance by Obama has developed an entirely different controversy of its own.

Arizona State didn't have a problem giving a degree to the fake cowboy Republican village idiot from Texas (Bush), who committed war crimes and torture in violation of international law...but of couse, he loved the fetus which all good deadender "christian" Wingnuts claim to do. In reality anyone with even half a brain knows that the minute you are born the radical right-wing religious nutjobs will throw you under the bus unless you come from a silver spoon (white and wealthy) Rethuglican background like Shrub Jr did...

These people at ASU are going to look like right idiots through the lens of history.

Becoming this country's first African American President will be hailed forever more in this history of this country as one of the greatest achievements in Presidential history. ASU denying him an honorary degree - even in light of the academic achievements from the stellar institutions he came to this job with - is confounding really.

The honorary degree thing is a weird game and I don't put much stock in it because so many people who have little to no education are often awarded them, but in this case the bottom line is that the ASU committee looks downright stupid - and people will remember them in history books and laugh at them. These are the kind of people who make academia look out of touch and oddly elitist.

Mark,

Your "Journalism Degree" doesn't happen to be honorary, is it?

Let me know.

Good to see all the research you're doing on this, Mark.....

Shows you CAN do research. That is, you can do it when you think it will help your buddy Barack.

Since you've now shown such an interest in colleges, perhaps you can spare a few minutes now to find out what courses your buddy Barack took in college. And his grades.

Ask your White House buddies to release this information to the public. And when they refuse, as they have in the past,
then perhaps wonder why.

earned.

surprised!

Mark Silva posts twice on the outrage of Obama being denied an honorary degree. He posts once on Obama bowing to an Arab theocratic dictator - and has no opinion as to whether Obama even bowed despite clear photographic evidence. Do you keep a photo of Obama on your nightstand, Silva?

Chris, why don't you tell the funny joke about the teleprompter again.

Bruce & Chris & Bemused:

First, I don't think Mark is showing outrage from the tone of the article.

Second, what about exposure of your grades and if you earned your degree if you have one? Do you think your grades from years ago are anyone's business?

Lastly, I did not know that you were required to have a college degree and publish your grades in order to run for office in the United States. Where do you find this in the constitution?

Why don't you go look for Obama's grades yourself, you nutbag. I'm pretty sure Obama's grades are public, he doesn't have to hide them the way that Republican mental midget from Texas that you voted for twice did. You don't become President of the Harvard Law Review like Obama did with crappy grades, RNC Brucie.

The ASU review committee isn't made up of "elistist academics", instead they are bowing to the reality of Arizona politics. The current review committee didn't want to be thrashed by the conservatives that make up a great part of the Arizona electorate (and, more importantly, mnake up virtually all of ASU's big donors) by conferring an honorary degree on the progressive President.

Do you keep a photo of Obama on your nightstand, Silva?

Hey Goofball, do you still keep a photo of Hillary on your nightstand? Because from reading your past posts it seems that you are the last remaining PUMA deadender on earth.

Arizona is filled with bigots and ASU is number one in bigotry in higher education.

What can you say about a so-called "political blog" whose writers will investigate Erma Bombeck's (!?) college degrees, but not Barack Obama's?

As to what needs to be made public, "Wiki answers" (among others) notes:
"Barack Obama has not released transcripts for his grades from Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law. He has also not released his SAT and LSAT scores. No explanation has been offered for not releasing them."

When the Swamp investigates Barack Obama's college degrees as much as it investigates Erma Bombeck's; when The Swamp puts as much effort into investigating Obama as it does investigating Obama's choice of dog; then, perhaps, The Swamp can be taken seriously.

Bruce:

Again where are YOUR transcripts, SAT, and other scores? Why no explanation as to why you have not revealed yours? What difference does it make now that he is in his 40's? What do you hope to gain by harping on this in every post?

I you don't like this blog you can go to one that agrees with your point of view.

Bruce, why stop at his college transcripts? Why not demand high school, middle school, and grade school transcripts?

Lochness you really think the release of Obama's and Bruce's transcripts is an apple to apple comparison? On one hand you have the POTUS who works for the American people, who I think have the right to know the qualifications of their leaders, and on the other hand you have a private citizen blogger who's transcripts would have no political relevance. From your posts I know you are smart enough to know the difference which begs the question of why you are doing it.

As for ASU, I don't know their criteria for these honorary degrees, and I don't really care. I just find it amusing how the hypersensitive Obama lovers rush to his defense in the face of any real or perceived slight. Mark Silva normally being first in line.

Well stated, Herbie. The hypersensitivity and intellectual dishonesty on the part of some Obama supporters is stunning. I would have long ago given much more support to Obama but for the patently biased mainstream media and downright nasty, borderline insane Obama supporters.

Lochness, I would gladly reveal my SAT scores, undergraduate transcripts, LSAT scores, law school transcripts, and masters degree transcripts if I decide to run for President. It's fair game to question why Obama's undergraduate record at Occidental and Columbia remain unrevealed. It's fair game to know his college- era sources of income and tuition payment as well. We know what a patheticly unqualified person George W. Bush was; that's one of the many reasons I never voted for him. Obama to this day remains far less vetted, and that is why we still hear the doubts expressed by many.

Oh, and Johnnie Knoxville - bite me.

It's only a piece of vellum but the rudeness of this snub is inexcusable.

Crow has minced his words over the past two days. First it was ASU doesn't give honorary degrees to sitting politicians, now it's since he has been president they don't give out honorary degress to politicians. So how does he explain the degrees Barry Goldwater and George Romney received?

ASU is an arrogantly managed public institution that will benefit from Obama's support of education. Then we have the rude students and supporters of Notre Dame protesting Obama's appearance at their upcoming graduation.

The ugliness of America has peaked its head under the banner of higher education. These situations bring to mind my father's belief that there is nothing worse than an educated fool.

I hope the insta-minute media covers the fall out at ASU post the graduation. Someone is going to be laterally arabesqued-- not fired...just shoved in a corner until we forget about this incident...
