Barney Frank went to Harvard.
(Undergraduate and law school.)
So the Massachusetts Democrat should have known what to expect when he went to talk at the Kennedy School of Government, where a student rose to challenge the House banking chairman for pushing an economic stimulus bill that he "later attacked" and for accusing critics of "being racist and so on.''
"Who did?'' Frank asked with some indignation.
"You're a public representative and I'm a student,'' the young man said.
"Which allows you to say things that you don't back up,'' Frank replied to laughter.
This wasn't nearly as rough as the cable-grilling that Frank got, on-the-air, from FOX News Channel's Bill O'Reilly. (See the classic below.)
Yet, complained Frank, "This is an example of the right-wing's efforts, frankly, to change the subject from getting regulation.''
"Stop labeling,'' a woman called out, "and answer the question.''
""I am labeling,'' Frank said. "I think labels are important. And I think there is a systematic right-wing attack to try to divert the blame for deregulation.''

Comments
Barney Frank needs to be either hospitalized or imprisoned. Anyone who challenges him gets called names.
In July 2008, Barney Frank said that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were sound, they were strong. One month later, both went belly up. Barney Frank for years fought against any regulating or fixing of Fannie and Freddie. He is directly partly responsible for the problems at both and within the banking industry. Then a couple of weeks ago, Braney Frank called Antonin Scalia a "homophobe." The Tribune did print an excellent column from a legal scholar who clearly pointed out how wrong Frank was for calling Scalia a homophobe. Meanwhile, where is the media investigation of the hundreds of thousands of dollar Frank got from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while he covered for their problems?
Barney Frank is the typical liberal politician: he demands perks, he demands his power and he will go after anything that he thinks challenges his power. Barney Frank is running amok and the media covers for him. How dare a student challenge him? You do that and you get called names by Barney Frank. Frank is a crook and needs to be treated as such.

Queen Frank, the financial wizzard was the cause of the housing market crash as well as the current ecomomic slump.

Once again the crook, or fox garding the hen house, Frank cannot answer a question of responsibility. Then the elected public servant attacks the student accusing him of right wing tactics. Well Mr. Frank, this was an American citizen asking you, an elected public servant to answer the question, you liberal elitist crook! You are a coward to no end sir and you once again, with your lispy voice and liberal mouth turns blame to a right wing conspiracy like most liberals do. It is just like the liberal to not give a straight answer to a question...private citizens are being attacked for a contrast of views. Once again, socialists and elitists are at work, not being public servants as they smore an oath to.
Face it Mr. Frank, you lied on the health of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac knowing full well what you did...lie to the American people and then with your cowardly liberal mind attacked the right wingers as the blame. It amazes me that the voters of Massachusetts voted this idiot to the nth power onto office who could not run a part time dog catching business. What gives Taxachussets people?

After watching Bill O'Reilly's crossfire, I now see the elitism with Frank looking down on people rather than answering a question to admit culpability. I am a Harvard grad too and believe me, he will be called on the carpet with Harvard alumni for not being man enough to accept a mea cupla. Bush spent very badly and O'Reilly is correct that both parties and Bush share the blame. However, Frank took it a step further and used his elitist liberal position to wring his hands and blame vast right wing conspracies. How can that be whn the liberal trifecta of power is running the store now? You can no longer use right wing conspracies as your answer and get away with it.
There is a brewing pot boiling over with seething voters and I believe the only way we are going to topple the trifecta of liberal power is a revolt of voters goinf to the polls and elect leaders that put America first, their constituents a close second, and be held accountible as public servants. Barney Frank is a crook and a liberal socialist elitist who does not belong in public office with his arrogance and "you can't blame me" attitude. Yes Mr. Frank...and I say that with the least respect possible...it is on your watch and you are culpable...RESIGN!

Acorn tanked the economy! Didn't you hear? And they did it with the help of Fannie, Freddie, Amanda Terkel, Frank, Dodd, MSNBC, Mark Silva, the CRA, Hollywood, flying unicorns and some magic pixie dust !!
Isn't that the Rush Limbaugh/Republican party approved, trademarked and patented talking point as to why the economy tanked under Bush's "leadership"? That it was the Dems who used brute force to force Fannie and Freddie to make all those bad loans...? Ha ha ha!

Lets get real about when the problem arose....by 2005 the damage was already done. The end of 2005 was when the bubble burst and the problem exsisted the years before that. Once again....by 2005 the damage was already done.

It is a shame that Barney Frank used such poor skills to deal with a simple question.
The yamulke questioner was composed, quiet, not nasty or vindictive sounding. He just asked a question!
Frank was obnoxious. Attacking the questioner, making fun causing the audience to laugh at the questioner; when all Frank had to do was answer the question.
Frank's eventual answer was fine. His nasty attack showed the malice and character disorder.

Bush and the Republicans could have regulated Fannie and Freddie more than they did no matter what Barney Frank said about it. Republicans were the MAJORITY party and Bush was the PRESIDENT then and during that entire eight year span Republicans didn't give a damn what Democrats thought about anything.
And because Barney Frank said that he thought Fannie and Freddie were strong awhile back then he is the sole reason why the economy tanked under George Bush's leadership?

So..... is it your contention, sir, that Republicans wanted to loan money to poor people who couldnt afford it? Trickled on Terri,
No, the balls are still in your court, girl friend. That's why your team (Repub) has been blown out in the last two elections.
Just because Barney Frank is a gay America citizen doesn't mean that Rethuglican bigots like you can blame the entire economic collapse, that happened under Bush Republican leadership, and expect anyone other than your fellow deadender wingnut sheep to believe it.
Your logic may fly in the land of the brainless 28% of Republican sycophants who supported Bush through thick and thin the last eight years, but here in the real world we all know you're full of crap, no matter how many right-wing sites you link to back up you science fiction world.
Posted by: you | April 8, 2009 11:38 PM
Terry,
Bush could have done whatever he wanted with Fannie and Freddie, IT DIDN"T MATTER WHAT BARNEY FRANK SAID.
Besides, Fannie and Freddie were actually victims of Bush's crap economy, they didn't cause it...
Here's the thing, Terri. All this right-wing garbage that you repeat to yourself everynight on here, where you're vainly trying to blame the Dems for the last eight years of BushCo rule....it's hilarious! It makes sense to you only because you're an insane right-wing psychopath like Bill-O and Limpbaugh, but the rest of us live in a place that you've never visited and it's called: "Reality".
PS - your posts are so funny/delusional that I always copy/paste them and then send them off to every single left wing site that I can think of just so everyone can get a good laugh. Keep them coming, you wanker.

Gee, you've gotta love all of these bigotted comments about Barney Frank on here from the Republican knuckle-draggers (Terry, John D). If Republicans aren't bashing gays then you can be sure that it's only because they're already busy bashing minorities. It definitely fits the profile most people have nowadays of Republicans being out of touch with main stream America and full of hate for everyone and anyone who doesn't look or act like they do...meanwhile, two of the biggest scandals in Congress the last few years have involved in the closet gay Republicans - one (Larry Craig) was caught soliciting men in an airport bathroom and the other (Mark Foley) was caught e-mailing and texting young boys and asking them for sexual favors...
Republicans have never been smart enough to have learned the "Glass Houses" theory as can be seen by their irrational hatred of Barney Frank...

As long as the real Republicans hitch their wagons to these slug boats, they aren't going any where near our White House for the next 20-30 years !! Keep up the good show, O'Really, you are making our case for us, in terms of not wanting, any incompetent Republicans in our federal government !! The question that flustered poor victim BBBBBarney was "do you hold yourself in any way responsible for the economic crisis?". It was a direct question that could have been answered simply.
The fact is that BBBBBarney does not see himself, in any way, responsible for the decisions he's made.
I see that Obama press secratary Mark Silva is at his usual level of journalistic competence.

Barney Frank should be touted as the Official Poster Child for why there should be term limitation in Congress.
He is a spineless, gutless, politically corrupt coward whose only weapon of choice when his back is against the wall is belittlement and name calling.
Frank is a national disgrace.

Terry,Yes, it is sad when a Congressman overreacts to a question for a student. What's even sadder is that your only reaction is homophobic slurs. Quit worrying about Frank's sexuality, and think about yours. Think about all the time you spend fixated on what male Democrats are doing in bed. Think about what you're really trying to hide from yourself. Terry, your homophobia is a classic case of repressed desire. Let your self go Terry, you'll be much happier when you admit that you are same sex oriented.

Don't forget the Congressional hearings in 2004 when Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, and other democratic congressional members told bank regulators they were on a witch hunt for being critical of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac lending practices. They went as far as to praise the CEOs of each as excellent leaders of each. Now he is the greatest critic only when he had to be. Barney Frank is an idiot. We would be better off with Barney Fife instead of Barney Frank.

Posted by: Right | April 9, 2009 9:39 AM
At the very least, it's disingenuous for Frank to deny culpability in the financial mess we're in. Yes. He DID have a part in delaying and derailing legislation that could have alleviated the stress we're facing now. And he WAS heavy-handed in dealing with questions from this college student. Hardly necessary given their relative power-positions.
This is, however, in the context of Republicans who are ALSO denying their share of the blame for bringing down our economy ("What??? No, not ME!!! I was NEVER in favor of an unregulated economy!"). Somewhat less successful in denying blame are the lending institutions and marginally-qualified borrowers who let greed get in the way of their own decent common sense.
The blame-denying is pure b*****t and I'm not buying it from any of them.

The real problem here is that the government is involved in the first place. It's not just Barney Frank, or just the Bush Administration and it's certainly not a lack of regulation. Fannie and Freddie are backed by the government. Had they not existed, and they shouldn't exist, this mess could not have happened. The government, Republicans and Democrats both, needs to stay out of the economy and let free markets work on their own.

ComeAsYouAre, please point out my "bigoted" comment about Mr. Frank. I would love to know what I wrote that was bigoted. Or is that any criticism of a Democrat, and especially one that is gay or black or Hispanic or Asian or fat or whatever is considered bigoted for the meer fact that one is criticizing that person?
Regarding the banking mess or mortgage mess, in the 1990s, the Clinton administration put forth a requirement to make it easier for anyone to get a loan. That opened the door for folks getting loans they could not pay back. Now the mortgage companies went overboard with interest-only loans and other things so folks could get those houses. There is plenty of blame for all regarding this mess: Democrats, Republicans, bankers and more importantly WE, the people.
