Closing the border won't work, he says, but staying off subways a good idea.

Vice President Joe Biden, calling the closing of the Mexican border "a monumental undertaking'' and not an effective means of combating the spread of swine flu, offered his own personal prescription today: Stay off airplanes and subway trains.

And the White House stood by Biden's advice today, while maintaining he meant to say that it's actually ill people who should avoid public transportation.

"I would tell members of my family, and I have, 'I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now,''' Biden said in an interview on NBC News' Today show this morning.

"It's not that it's going to Mexico... It's that you're in a confined aircraft, where one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft,'' Biden said, asked about the wisdom of traveling to Mexico. "I would not be at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway....

"If you're out in the middle of a field and someone sneezes, that's one thing,'' the vice president said on Today. "If you're in a closed aircraft, or closed container or closed car or closed container, it's another thing.''

The White House was quick with an explanation this morning, Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander issuing this statement: "The vice president was asked what he would tell a family member who was considering air travel to Mexico this week. The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico.''

"If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways,'' she said. "This is the advice the vice president has given family members who are traveling by commercial airline this week.''

The State Department has issued a travel advisory warning against travel to Mexico.

The vice president also defended the Obama administration's position that closing the border with Mexico, where more than 150 are believed to have died after contracting swine flu -- though the World Health Organization has acknowledged only several deaths -- is not an effective means of fighting the spread of a disease already present in the United States and appearing in growing number of states. It also would be "a monumental undertaking,'' he said on CBS News' Early Show.

"We're on top of this thing,'' Biden said on the Early Show.

The White House wasn't the only party commenting on Biden's comments. The travel industry had something to say today, too:

Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, today issued this statement following Biden's comments:

"Americans should heed the advice of medical experts when determining how best to manage health concerns during the ongoing swine flu outbreak. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and countless other experts, swine flu should not discourage people from traveling to or within the United States.
"Elected officials must strike a delicate balance of accurately and adequately informing citizens of health concerns without unduly discouraging travel and other important economic activity.

"According to President Obama, swine flu is a cause for concern, but not panic. President Obama's measured and responsible comments are appropriate and should provide useful guidance to other elected officials."

With confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States growing and spreading to more states, the White House continues to face questions about closing the border with Mexico.

Health officials in the U.S. and at the World Health Organization have called border closings ineffective with a disease that already has been confirmed in many nations and is close to being declared a pandemic by the WHO.

President Barack Obama, asked about this at his news conference last night, said: "At this point they have not recommended a border closing. From their perspective, it would be akin to closing the barn door after the horses are out, because we already have cases here in the United States.''

"We have contacted and been in contact with the leading health experts in the world,'' Biden said this morning on Today, "and they have suggested that is not the way we should move...

"What they have suggested is that we should deal with mitigation... Closing a classroom and closing a border are two fundamentally different things.''

The president has suggested that local officials might consider closing schools temporarily in places where swine flu emerges, and some schools have acted on that advice.

CBS'Maggie Rodriguez, on The Early Show, asked the vice president about the one swine flu fatality reported in the U.S., the death of a toddler from Mexico at a hospital in Houston.

"Now that a toddler has died in this country from it, why shouldn't we close the border with Mexico?'' Rodriguez asked.

"Closing down a classroom where... there's a detection of contagion and, you know, that's how the virus spreads, or closing down public meetings, is one thing,'' Biden said.

"But closing down an entire border where -- as you know, this is most communicable when, in fact, you don't even know whether people are not even showing the signs of the flu -- is just a monumental undertaking, and would not have nearly the impact would be to take these mitigating circumstances.''

The best medicine for parents, Biden said in the CBS interview, is washing hands, making sure their children do and "making sure that they are not in public places touching items that, in fact, have been touched by others, et cetera.''

"Stay off airplanes"?

Does that mean Biden will follow his own advice and not fly anywhere this summer?

we can only hope.....

Let's just create a panic Joe....tell everyone to stay inside, don't go to work, don't go to school, don't go to church.

Are you kidding me?

Over 200,000 people are hospitalized each year in the United States with the Flu. The Flu kills over 36,000 American's each year.....more than 100 people per day on average. Do we stop flying because of the flu? Do we avoid the subway because of the flu?

Let's just shut down the country for a few months, what do think of that Joe?

Biden shows just how incompetent this administration is regarding the southern border and allowing infected people into this country from planes from Mexico. Just keep letting thousands of possibly infected people in every day from Mexico instead of closing the borders. This is an amazing Keystone Cops administration.

Many of us like Joe Biden, even though we may not always agree with all his politics. But Biden sure can put his foot in his mouth. I guess all of us are now supposed to stay home, don't go to work and hide under our beds. I came to downtown Chicago from Northbrook on METRA this morning. Should I find another way home? But I am now getting worried. Maybe the Obama Administration knows something about the Swine Flu that they are not telling us. This would not be the first time that politicians have kept the truth from the public.

And Sarah Palin was the one that got made fun of? I think his plugs got planted too deep.

Biden's an idiot!!!!

No problem Joe! I'll just ride around in my government paid for motorcade to get where I need to go. Isn't that what all people do?

Talk about a classic case of being in government too long. This is a person with no idea of how ordinary people live, from working class people up to and including successful private sector management.

...now… I'm dead serious: Joe Biden has irreversible brain damage. Just look at his face.....

Folks. He was talking about air and subway travel in Mexico. Read it again.

What do you suggest a couple million of us do, Mr. Vice-President? I have to take some sort of enclosed public transportation to and from work every day. I really don't think this is so awful. I've always been aware of people sneezing, coughing, then grabbing the rails on the El, but it hasn't stopped me from just washing my hands when I get to work. If you can't practice common sense like washing your hands and not touching your face every two seconds, then maybe, yeah. Walk or bike or drive. But I think the vast majority of us have a couple brain cells that rub together on a fairly regular basis and we're gonna be okay.

Biden's an idiot!!

I see the crazies are having a ball, because Vice-President Biden offered some simple advice to the nation. What churlishness !! Can't these Republicans just find some sensible policies to champion, instead of mocking our Vice-President ? No wonder they are losing members of their Party. It is easier to mock someone than to establish, and be loyal to, principles. I think Senator Specter is the first, of several, that may leave that bankrupt Party !! They basked in Bush's shadow, no not Cheney, but the Incompetent's Presidency and rode it for all it was worth. Now, the ship is listing and they get religion. No, it is not a vaudevillian show, these are the Dixiecrats, masquerading as Republicans !! They want you to believe they have found their way back to conservatism and yet, they continue to try to belittle our elected officials !! Simply because, they offered the nation some advice, which may save a life or two. I sincerely hope that the swine flu doesn't find any of these crazies, or their loved ones !!
Keep up the good work, President Obama and Vice-President Biden. America appreciates your dedication and determination.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

This guy is an idiot.. I see an Airlines bailout on the horizion

Biden is not directing this toward the American public. The Tribune is the only one reporting this and taking it out of context. Lets not start a panic Trib.

Good God! This guy is a nut case. Another doom and gloom democrat, and not a very smart one at that, attempting to tank the ailine industry. Does this mean that this white house will stay home this spring and summer too - and spare us from their visits to all the little people out there. Just have them send empty planes around our cities as they did with their $300,000 plus trip this week in NY.

@Ana. From the story:

"If you're out in the middle of a field and someone sneezes, that's one thing,'' the vice president said on Today. "If you're in a closed aircraft, or closed container or closed car or closed container, it's another thing.''

How does this not discourage travel? This has nothing to do with Mexico.

What a moron!

@ Suicide Doors

From the article.

"I would tell members of my family, and I have, 'I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now,'''

Oh, I see he was only directing it at his family, not the American public, I feel better now.

That's a good point, Jack. If only this administration had closed the border earlier and not let those Catholic school students from Queens return from their holiday in Mexico! Such a Keystone Cops move, as you say. Obama should've just let those kids stay in Mexico.

Here's some more good advice: ignore everything Joe Biden says.

And if Biden was advising people not to ride the subway in only Mexico City, he did a poor job of communicating this to the public.

Keep scaring the public Joe, I need those airline stocks to drop another 14%, so that I can make a healthy profit on the rebound next month. Thank you.

Folks. He was talking about air and subway travel in Mexico. Read it again.

***

Of course he was talking about his family traveling on the subways in Mexico

**

Biden also said on NBC's "Today" show that he is advising his own family to stay off commercial airlines and even subways because of swine flu. If one person sneezes on a confined aircraft, he said, "it goes all the way through the aircraft."

Within two hours, Biden's office issued a statement backing off the remarks and suggesting he was talking about travel to Mexico.

His precautions go beyond official advice from the U.S. government;

Just remember....this is Joe Biden. He never fails to meet your expectations!

I believe he's what P.T Barnem had in mind years ago.

Does anyone wonder why he's the poorest man in Washington?

Leave it to Joe to throw out the seeds of panic.

Biden can ride around in his chauffeur-driven, gas-guzzling armored Chevy suburban SUV with five other SUVs as
escorts. For us the rest of us in the Obama proletariat who depend on public transit, well, we can just walk while Obama refuses to close the border to the flu carriers.

Honestly, why do they let this guy speak in public. That's just fantastic advice number 2, now go back in your hole.

Maybe the White House should stop apologizing for Biden? The apologies/explanations/excuses just highlight Biden's gaffes. Of course if the media didn't report every little idiotic comment made by a politician, this never would be an issue in the first place. Tabloid-style, Twitter-style sound bites really have no purpose other than to annoy.

No, Joe, keep those borders wide open 'cause you Democrats want all of those illegal immigrant voters to join the party!

This doesn't sound like Amtrak Joe! In his backward way, he must have--must've!--been telling people who are already sick to avoid confined spaces. But I couldn't believe my ears--don't fly? don't take the L? I have 100% better chance of catching a cold on the way to work than catching this celebrity pandemic.

This putz won't close the border which is doable and would, al least, slow the virus. President Teleprompter and and VP Village Idiot.

Ha ha Joey. You got a better chance of getting shot by a gang banger in Chicago than getting this flu! What an idjit.

Watch the video. He said "I wouldn't go ANYWHERE in a confined place..." if he had alternate means of transport.

"It's not that it's going to Mexico, but you're in a confined aircraft...."

Pretty clear.

open Biden mouth; insert Biden foot. Poor JB, he just doesn't know when to stop.

Glad you brought up the Tribune, The Tribune biggest problem they have turned into "A Socialist Rag"

Keep it up, Joe !! I love these crazies moronic postings. They are all very amusing and filled with fear, the very thing that allowed you and President Obama to be elected. Come on, you Republican crazies, let's have some more of your incredible wisdom !! I need a good laugh, again !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

You have Obama saying he can't close the border because the horse is out of the barn and you have biden saying to avoid subways but he wouldn't cancel his vacation to mexico.

Just yesterday these was an article that commedians were having a hard time making fun of this administration.

With this kind of comic material, you have to be kidding me!!!!

Yeah Jack - the previous president did such a wonderful job at closing down our southern border, right?

Has anyone release the toddler's Medical Record??? Isn't it fair to analyse if this little boy was ever vaccinated, if his immune system was already low, or some other reason why he died of the disease? Why hasn't any journalist considered doing this? Isn't this disease supposed to attack more healthy young adults? So having a toddler be the ONLY confirmed severe case in the country contradicts that fact, doesn't it? I'm confused. And what happened to the Economy? I haven't heard much about our crisis since the pigs took over our news.

Ignore practical advice, folks; don't check your tire pressure either, it might save on gas.

Closing the border won't help because you can't close the border (unless you send troops there).

Lucky Joe is not President would be worse that Socialist Obama.

Another example of Blow Hole Joe opening his mouth and putting his foot (up to the knee)in it

I remember when the liberals used to jump all over anything Bush said if it didn't come accross just right. It looks like a little payback time. Thanks Joe for letting us conservatives have a little fun.

I don't want to be in a confined area with this idiot. I might catch stupidity!

So Joe, due to a few hundred flu cases, only a few of which have been fatal only to the very young, old and/or already sick with pre-existing conditions, you suggest basically shutting down Chicago, New York and possibly other mass transit-dependent cities. This is beyond ridiculous.

I wonder how much the airline's stock dropped today based on Joe "I love plagairism" Biden's comments.
I have a question for those Loons on the Left who think Biden is all great and what he said is wonderful, but how many Americans who travel to Mexico ride Mexico's subway? And why would Biden be talking about what to do or not to do in Mexico this way? Is he not talking to Americans here?
This badministration is destroying this country and about 40 percent of the people are OK with that and 20 percent are clueless as to what is taking place. That's the real story going on here.

Biden is, was, and always will be gaffe-o-matic. He was known for his stupid off-the-cuff remarks well before he was picked for the VP slot. He's like the Quayle of this generation.

We all remember some of the silly, goofy, and stupid things George Bush said. Those were Bushisms. It's like when he said his favorite book is 'My Pet Goat'.

Details to follow on this Saturday's episode of Saturday Night Live.

Ah yes....Obama/Biden - Real Men of Genius!

He seems to suffer from mouth works faster than brain syndrome.

Who threw the chum in the water this time?

"Just one heartbeat away from the presidency."

God, save us all.

God help us if this guy were ever to become President. "Stand up Chuck!"

Hey Don F. what's the body count today in Afghanistan?

I was told that if I vote for McCain that we would have an idiot as Vice President. Man, were they right!

But Joe is Amtrak safe?

Biden is just saying it like it is. Only if the rest of the politicians would speak the truth instead of filtering it through the pr machines.

I guess Americans are use to having their press reports from the government officials sanitized.
