Former President George W. Bush may be building a presidential library in Dallas, but he won't have to make any room for Dick Cheney's records in the near future.
The former vice president, who wants to keep his records in Washington while he works on a book about his memoirs, is asking the National Archives to take care of them for a while - which is ironic, in light of the fact that the former vice president never would tell the Archives how much material he had classified or declassified, because he claimed he didn't have to comply with his president's executive order requiring this annual disclosure of all executive agencies because he was "not part of the executive branch,'' but rather a legislative creature as president of the Senate.
Got that? We broke the original story about Cheney's classified records being off-limits for the Archives at the Tribune.
Anyway, the Dallas Morning News notes, Cheney's records will be welcome at the new Bush library at Southern Methodist University. But Cheney wants to keep them close while penning that memoir.
"It made more sense and was more convenient to keep them in D.C.," Cheney spokeswoman Lucy Tutwiler told the Morning News.
Dan Quayle's papers joined former President George H.W. Bush's collection in College Station, Texas, and even rested with his boss' stuff in a converted bowling alley until his library opened at Texas A&M University, the Morning News notes.
"During talks last year, the National Archives suggested that Cheney's artifacts - like a set of gold Murano glass candlesticks and bowls from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi - be sent to the Bush library,'' the paper reports. "That way they could be displayed with Bush's items, including the 9 mm pistol that Saddam Hussein held when captured by American soldiers in Iraq.
"The VP preferred to have the VP artifacts remain with the records," said Sharon Fawcett, assistant archivist for presidential libraries.
We assume the sunglasses will stay in Jackson Hole.

Every time war criminal Darth opens his mouth it reminds people of how thoroughly repugnant the Republican Party is. Not even Rush is as effective at turning people off.

I wonder if he's going to tell us about his 5 deferments (to avoid combat in VietNam) and his 2 drunk driving convictions or his 11% approval rating when he left office?? Or how patriotic he was when, after the United States was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, he was hurried off to a secret undisclosed location where he remained in hiding for weeks.

You recall the Inauguration where Shooter had to be wheeled around in a wheelchair?
The story put out was that he had "strained his back" lifting some boxes.
I thought: doesn't he have some lackey like Atterburg or Atterberry or whatever Scooter's underling's name is, to tote boxes for him??
But then I realized: these were "special" boxes, full of things Shooter wanted personally to put through the shredder.

Cheney's records are grand jury material; indictment time.

Let him publish whatever he wants. I wouldn't trust a word he says, whether about him, about things he's done, about things he's been involved with, or just things he's observed. Maybe if I could just read the book and then figure that whatever he says is the exact opposite of the truth? Nah -- it couldn't be that straightforward.
