The Obama administration will declare greenhouse gases a threat to public health today, sources said, marking a major step - both practically and symbolically - toward federal limits on the carbon dioxide emissions scientists blame for global warming.
The move by the Environmental Protection Agency is prompted by a two-year-old Supreme Court decision. It paves the way for the White House to regulate emissions from vehicles and effectively force the U.S. auto fleet to be cleaner and more efficient - a plan the administration is expected to put in place soon.
It also opens the door to broad emissions limits in all other parts of the economy, including power plants and construction sites, which critics say could further chill an already recessionary economy. Administration officials insist they'd prefer to let Congress set those limits, and that they will help spur millions of clean-energy jobs in the years to come.
Environmentalists are celebrating the so-called "endangerment finding" as the biggest statement yet that the federal government, after years of downplaying the dangers of climate change under the Bush administration, is now preparing to act boldly to combat it.
The is a "landmark moment in environmental history," Frank O'Donnell, president of the environmental group Clean Air Watch, said in a press release anticipating the decision.
"Where the Bush administration lagged, the Obama administration is now leading," said David Bookbinder, Sierra Club Chief Climate Counsel. " There is no longer a question of if or even when the U.S. will act on global warming. We are doing so now,"
Critics warn that the policy could cripple small businesses and kill economic growth.
"An endangerment finding would lead to destructive regulatory schemes that Congress never authorized," a group of eight leading conservative and free-market activists - including Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform - warned the EPA in a letter this week, adding later: "the Administration will bear responsibility for any increase in consumer energy costs, unemployment, and GDP losses" that result.

I've spent 30 years in the air pollution control and water pollution control industry. The issuance of this report by EPA has completely destroyed its credibility and it has most definitely become a shill for the extremists. It reminds me of the Soviet propaganda machines in the 60s and 70s.

I don't think that this has anything to do with small business. Its autos and coal plants for the most part. The problem is that we can limit CO2 gases until the cows come home, but the worlds greenhouse gas problem will not be alleviated by the US alone.
The problem on a number of fronts and not just this area is China, plain and simple. If the UN for instance imposes rules, do we think the Chinese will follow them? I don't think so.
And when the cows do come home, put a roof over their head.

Everyone should protest by having a fire in their back yards, every single day.
I wonder how they'd tax that?

This will now allow the government to literally regulate human breathing. Have you paid your breathing tax today?

President Obama does not disappoint! This declaration is on track !

Let's get one thing straight. Contrary to the article above, EPA has not issued an endangerment finding; the Administrator today has signed a proposed endangerment finding. An endangerment finding by itself does not trigger regulation, but it is a step.
Read all about it at:
http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/endangerment.html
There will be a period of 60 days after the proposal is published in the Federal Register (look for that in about a month) during which anyone who wants to can comment. If you like what EPA is proposing, say so; if you don't, tell EPA. Nothing is final yet.

Judging by some of these pro-pollution posts, if it were not for EPA regulation we would still be using DDT and dumping mercury and every other toxin in streams and rivers. As long as we put it in someone else's backyard, then it's OK....right? We can't control China so why should we do the right thing? Sorry, but that is the wrong attitude.

Sweet! More government regulation from the Obama administration! What's next? I can't wipe with more than one piece of toilet paper?!!

I think we need to invade China for having weapons of global climate destruction

Thanks, TomS, for a level-headed response! Complaining that we can't force China to comply shouldn't be a reason for us to ignore it.

Fortunately, VivianT, our government doesn't regulate the poor choice of the use of the word "literally" when people make posts! They won't regulate that any more than regulating your or my breathing, regardless (note please, it's not "irregardless") of inflammatory postings.

The SKY IS FALLING!!! The SKY IS FALLING!!!

I've spent 30 years in the air pollution control and water pollution control industry.
I breath and drink water everyday and I've noticed that everybody is in my face telling me what to do, when to do it , and how to do it !!!!!
obama go tell China, India, Cuba, and every other third rate country on what THEY need to do about CO2...then come back here and hobble the US economy !!!!!
When you get buy in from them THEN come to me!!!!

Carbon dioxide is now dangerous. I wonder how many times he had to say it to believe it.
I remember the ozone scare (O3), we were depleting the ozone layer. We never knew how to measure the ozone layer. Same science applied here.
Next will come nitrogen.
And in reality, oxegen is far more toxic to humans than either of these other gases. We can only survive in a finite window of concentration.

It's at times like these that I will miss George Carlin the most.
Some say the northeast will become too warm to support the sugar maples and the ski season.
Others say it will become colder and snowier because of the slowing of the ocean conveyor.
This thing is kinda like a little religion in a way, huh?
I've been reading where some scientists are predicting an ice age instead of global warming.
Why don't you get on the same page before you start going around with your collection plates please.

The future is LED home light fixtures - why are we stuck on using bulbs? They are designed to be temporary - changed and disposed of (especially those with mercury). Lets think long term results and returns!

Pollution is pollution whether it be on land, in the air, or in the water. Why can't we leave things a little cleaner for our children and grandchildren regardless of what the rest of the world does? You have the power. You can choose to be part of the problem or part of the solution!

Next up; a EPA reg on banning "farts"! How about that mercury in the energy bulbs. Don't bust one or you need a EPA clean-up permit. Ban cow also, too much flatulence. Whoops, there goes meat and McDonalds! Gloda- warning/climate BS is just ignorant lefty hype. Obama and his pals are going to continue to pander this charade until they destroy our American economy and our lives. This is madness. Yes sir, coming soon from the Obama transportation corp.(note not motor)...camel power! Think of it...camel trains instead of those nasty diesel trucks. No need for roads, tear up those parking lots, plant grass to absorb the dreaded gas. They conserve water too. Man, I could go on with 100's of uses. But, do you dare abuse your camel. PETA on your a**. Sounds wonderful, the glorious new EPA/lefty way of life. So rid-dick-us.

Yeah, guys I'm agree with you. It is very important to stay on top of your health and have a check up at least once a year to ensure that you remain healthy. Many health problems are curable but you need to catch them in time.

And Rob, I also read that they are blaming the next ice age on global warming now. How ludicrous. What are they going to get away with next. This group is out of control.
