Michael Steele, with a knowing laugh, notes how "packed'' the shopping malls are these days, in the midst of a daunting recession.
The Republican National Committee chairman was commenting on a caller's comment on Bill Bennett's radio show. The caller questioned how bad the economy really is, considering the fact that when he looks around he doesn't "see people spending any less money than they have been.''
"I've heard a number of people say that across the country,'' Steele replied with a laugh, and pretty well laughing all the way through the nodding comment: "The malls are just as packed on Saturday.''
"The malls are just as packed,'' the caller said. "You still can't get seat in a restaurant.''
This, naturally, prompted a harrumph from the Democratic National Committee: "This callous statement just proves how out of touch the Republican Party is,'' DNC spokesman Hari Sevugan said. "Michael Steele may be worried about his ability to get a reservation at the latest DC restaurant, but there are too many Americans worried about just putting food on their kitchen tables.''
Then again, when Attorney General Eric Holder looks around the shopping malls, he sees something else: An unrelenting racial divide in America.
Holder's comment about "a nation of cowards'' on the question of race drew its share of harrumphs from the other side of the political fence. But there truly is a persistent problem in America. President Barack Obama, too, has noted that, while these are tough times for all Americans, they are "tougher times for African Americans.''
We have a relative whose observations of the shopping mall scene have convinced him that obesity is epidemic in America.
Is it possible that the shopping malls of America may not be the best barometers of much of anything? Or is it true that we are shopping our way through a so-called recession, marching in racial lines through the check-out lanes and Cinnamon Bunning our way through life?

I believe racism still exists by the callous comments some spew on this blog.
As far a the shopping malls, just because people are there, does not mean they are spending any money. When we were young parents, we went there often just for something to do especially in the winter. We would window shop and let the kids walk around. I'm sure young parents still do this today.

What else can you expect from an Idealess Party, other than phantom WMDs !! Typical mindless, cold-hearted Republican response, the Party of WMDs !! Go find an idea, that doesn't breakdown, at the moment of scrutiny !!

As a retailer in a mall, I can tell you first hand that the stores in our are NOT seeing business as usual. Most are down in the 30 to 40 percent range. People might be out and about, but they're not spending like they used to. Steele, the RNC and the sheeple who follow them really don't have a clue.

Seems that the Republicans have nothing, no leadership, no cohesive message, no plan, nothing--not even a sense of reality.

The "new" republican spin? : There really was NO recession. Brilliant!!!! There hand is on the pulse ha ha ha!

Nobody should be surprised that this rock-head Steele behaves this way. The Republicans represent the interests of the rich, and the rich are not as affected by this crisis as the poor and the middle class. The rich don't care if bad things happen to the poor and the middle class as a result of this crisis; in fact, the suffering of the poor and the middle class is often to their benefit. That's why Republican "leaders" laugh at this crisis, because it doesn't affect them very much. "Let them eat cake" or "Let them go bankrupt" are the motto's of these people. This crisis was precipitated by the rich, or more precisely the richest of the rich. I would laugh too if a crisis that I caused affected people farther down the chain, and I came out of it unscathed.
If I was a Republican 'leader" I would laugh too because the people that these Republican "leaders" represent are some of the dumbest people in America and they are at the bottom of the food chain. They don't really fight back and when they do they are easily manipulted into doing stupid stuff like holding "teabagging" parties where they go out and protest against their own well-being and against the wealthiest 1-2% of this country paying their fair share of taxes. It would be hilarious if it were not so tragic.

After years of conducting mulitple interviews and doing numerous scientific studies, a member of the right-wing lunatic fringe (Joe) has just announced that: "Racism IS A MYTH INVENTED BY LIBERALS".
....Wow, who knew?
Thanks for clueing us in on how the Wingnut mind works, Joey!

This is the incredibly stupid 'truthiness' that has come to define the Republican party.
HEY IDIOT CALLER: YOU CAN"T TELL HOW MUCH SPENDING IS GOING ON BY 'LOOKING AROUND' THE MALL! (Yeah, it's shouting, not emphasis.)
Jeez, what a metal retrograde. Steele and the other cretin, also.
So is this the Republican position?;
'There is no financial or economic crisis'
For cripe sake, I can't tell if people are driving less by looking around the freeway and saying, 'gee whiz, people are driving just as much as ever'.
Stupid is as stupid does. I guess those 650k layoffs aren't really happening.

OK, for all you dick heads that say "NO ideas", tell me what does "change" mean when a candidate runs on a platform of 95% tax cuts, you freaks.
Also, lets steal the money others have made and give it to students who don't pay income taxes to pay for their education, you freaks.
Also, lets pay for all the illegal's healthcare, education by stealing money from others to pay for illegal aliens, you freaks.
OK, freaks, with all the "change and new ideas", where is all this MONEY coming from that Pres. Obama and Congress want to spend.
Let's make it legal stealing and raise taxes on some and give TAX breaks (oh, that NO idea that doesn't work) for about 50% that don't pay income taxes, oh yeah, Mr. wonderful, he really came up with a new idea. Lets steal from the rich and give TAX breaks to the rest. Now that's real change, right freaks.
What I find unbelievable is how many want to trash TAX CUTS from the GOP, and are happy to accept TAX CUTS, from the Democrat controlled Govt'. It's perfect for your narrow view of accepting what really happened. Just like he didn't bow, and what is-is. freaks lol

Would that be like the "rich" that took 3 trillion in real estate value from Americans? You still are a little confused....this crisis didn't start from Main Street, it came from Wall Street. Would they be the ones the republicans want to triple down on tax breaks for?
ps...nice shotgun rant.

Hey, moron, just because you are a dodo of a Republican, doesn't mean that you have to show us your stupidity, all the time. How about using adult words and phrases, instead of that schoolyard language !!? Typical Ridiculous Republicans, you can't reason, so you just call people names and sell fear !! What leadership qualities !! No wonder, your Party, the Party of WMD, are out, on your ear. You haven't grown up, yet !! We'll see you, in about 20-25 years, when you have broaden your vocabulary and matured a good deal more !!

and just imagine if the republicans got their way on Social Security and all those "smart" investors got ripped a new one. The republicans don't like big government that takes your money.....they like big companies that take your money.

Sorry, libs, but racism largely is dead in America. How is this country racist when blacks and whites are friends? When blacks and whites play sports together? When Will Smith is the number one movie star? Oprah the richest TV star? We have a black president. The last administration had two black secretaries of state, a Hispanic attorney general and several other Hispanics in Cabinet posts? Are race relations perfect? No. But to act like this is a racist country or a country in which the races do not get along is ridiculous. But then being liberal is ridiculous.
Posted by: John D | April 12, 2009 2:11 PM
I just wanted to feel at home insulting others with a different opinion.
I guess limited intelligence and truth is difficult for some. Let's see Wall Street doesn't have a vote in raising or lowering TAXES, do they? Yes or NO?
I guess Congress didn't force the change of lending rules, the people (main street) didn't take advantage of those rules knowing they couldn't afford it and lenders didn't take advantage of main street. While Congress received money, and votes back from Corp', Main Street, and Unions. Nothing but a bunch of crooks.
Oh, and the 401k's (hurt) I guess that only happened to the left and not the tight. Are you really that stupid.
And not one of you couch mouth's has taken a shot at Congress for continuing their perks and giving themselves pay rises in a recession.
Posted by: PG | April 12, 2009 4:52 PM
What I also find amazing is how you ignore ALL the TAX points and just take suggestive shots at me.
Question: Did P. Obama run on TAX CUTS or NOT?
Posted by: PG | April 12, 2009 5:08 PM
Tax cuts aren't the subject of the post, PG. And NO Congress doesn't make lending rules. And yes, you know nothing.
Posted by: mort | April 12, 2009 6:33 PM
Hey Genius, how is Social Security funded (TAXES) and how much money is there in the Government run system (0)? Oh yeah, they do a much better job. It's a "take as you go" system.

Posted by: PG | April 12, 2009 8:27 PM
Mort, Mort, Mort, sorry to inform you but Congress does and did set forth lending rules. In fact, during the Clinton administration it laid down rules REQUIRING lenders to provide loans to people regardless of whether they could actually pay those loans. When will Loony Lefties EVER learn and understand history? Never, I know.

Absolutely 100% false John D. Read the act and you will see it told the banks NOT to abandon safe loan practices. When will the RABID ever learn that? READ THE BILL!
Posted by: bill r. | April 13, 2009 7:43 AM
Lenders set lending rules, John D. Your statement is false.
Posted by: mort | April 13, 2009 8:06 AM
The Act requires the appropriate federal financial supervisory agencies to encourage regulated financial institutions to meet the credit needs of the local communities in which they are chartered, consistent with safe and sound operation.
Read the Bill and learn!!!!!!!!!

Minorities take note: Republicans like John D say you are lying. They say that there is no racism and that you are making it all up. They say YOU are the problem. Remember that next time you vote.
Posted by: Mel | April 13, 2009 12:12 PM
billr,
Right you are. Crazy John Devola is lying again.
The Wall St. capitalists and the unregulated mortgage houses did the deed. They were called 'liar loans' and the likes of CountryWide, Ameriquest and IndyMac pushed them knowing they were bad. Regulated banks made almost no bad loans.
And you are right, good loan practices were required under CRA.
Crazy John, you are a naked liar.
