Michelle Obama's royal touch: Queen's: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

That touching -- literally -- moment at Buckingham Palace where the Queen apparently abandoned all of her own protocol and reached out to the visiting first lady from the former colonies has gotten the world talking about the power of touch.

royal huggers.jpg

"The Queen put her arm round the First Lady,'' the Times of London reports.

"It is less than 20 years ago that the Australian prime minister was branded 'the Lizard of Oz' for committing the supposedly heinous crime of putting his hand on the Queen's back during an official tour of Australia,'' they add with a historical note.

Yet there seemed to be some debate over who touched whom first.

"Given the Queen's track record -- she is not a woman known for doing warm, at least not in public-- the fact that Mrs Obama is American, and that the president spent most of the first part of the day putting his arm round Gordon Brown, it can safely be assumed that it was the First Lady who took the initiative.

"This was a mutual and spontaneous display of affection and appreciation between The Queen and Michelle Obama," a Palace spokeswoman explained.

Prepare for more tasteless comments from the rabid. Some with their obvious racist taint.

Michelle is just like Barack. She can do no wrong! Everything she does is just so right and wonderful. I read it in the papers, so it must be true.

Why she's been in London less than a day, and already she's close friends with the Queen!

And look at her BEAUTY...she's just like Jackie!

I am so proud to be a subject of the Obama administration. I swear eternal adoration.

Nice preemptive race card play, Bill.
It appears that Michelle can do no wrong.

It is clear in the photo that the queen has her hand on the First Lady as well...The stupid queen and her stupid rules, give me a break!

Sounds like you are a racist through and through.

Amazing how, (actually not) the people on this board who just attack others ignoring the articles, facts (like above) by dismissing a moment, are not worth mentioning their names.

I'm finding racist, tasteless comments come from those who are racist and classless.

Of course you wouldn't find "Blackie-O" offensive.......you agree with it. It's all good fun behind closed doors...right?

I do feel proud of our first family. They seem so approachable. Just what we need to heal relations with other countries!

Forget the psychological binding of being called a "racist".

No white guilt, here.

Negative press for Hillary, negative press for Laura, negative press for Pat Nixon, negative press for Betty Ford, negative press for Nancy Reagan.

No more white guilt, it's a psych trip.

Time to stop being worried that you're labeled a "racist".

Speak your mind. There are lousy people of all races and every time there is some negative comments the word "racist" is tossed out.

The problem arising: people become immuned to the word.

Speak your mind, release your inhibitions or else you are condemned to silence.

In watching the video of the first couple meeting the Queen and her husband, Prince Phillip yesterday, I was struck by the way Michelle edged Prince Phillip out to stand directly next to the Queen for a photo op. Not what Prince Phillip wanted at all. He had gestured for Mrs. Obama to come to his left side so he could remain by the Queen's side. I think it was a breach of protocol and no one noticed. Prince Phillip looked a bit ticked off...several other people I know saw it.
Don't they have people who direct visitors on the right way to stand and greet the monarchy?
I don't give one wit about the monarchy...but as someone representing the US...you'd think it would be good form to know and defer to the host?

In case you have not figured it out, there is an Obama force field, electromagnetic charisma.

Not at all surprising that Elizabeth, who's met every world figure since FDR and Churchill, would bond with Michelle.

Folk down in Hyde Park know firsthand since a little over 4 years ago he was our state senator.

Is that unbelieveable, or what?

Oh, please.

Just reading your comment gave my diabetes.

If you don't see it....you must agree with it.

Michelle O is a good role model for young black girls.

Maybe black females will start dressing more appropriately, learn to speak properly and take their education seriously.

That is the least she will do.

Perhaps, other foreign countries can move up black candidates for office. Where are black jews for prime minister, where is the black French president, where is the black English prime minister, the black Spanish leader, the black Japanese leader?

Why do black people always think black and nothing else. Why we have to move black officials up because we have a black First family? So isn't this reverse inequality?

This guy is a TOOL! First a DVD set and then an iPod? Ghetto chic, Mr. President.

In no way has Blackie O taken over from Jackie O.

These anti-British stunts should tell you whether Obama, in his heart, considers himself more Kenyan-African, or more American.

Maybe his next gift to a world leader can be some nice rims or spinners for their car.

He is Robin Crook from the Hood.

Thanks for making my point. I did a search for "Blackie-O", in this article and the link.
Not there. Apart from making racist, classless comments, now creating stuff that's not there. I guess that's called lying, or fabricating facts/points.

I'm going to make a wild guess and say the queen put her arm on Michelle first, maybe to encourage her to walk beside her rather than behind her, and Michelle responded spontaneously by putting her arm across the queen's shoulder. It's lovely on both their parts.

bill r. you are absolutely right. Day after day we are subjected to the same classless, tasteless, vile, racist,(yes racist) postings and garbage on these boards with nothing constructive to say or add. Most are by people who do not even read the actual stories. They are too blind and ignorant. What is most incredible about their rantings is that you would think for once they would be happy that we now have a President that the rest of the world respects, admires, listens to, and who is a true leader. A man who is restoring our standing in the world, which was ruined by the previous occupant of the White House.

joh dey, I have no guilt because I know who I am. But letting people brand you/me as a racist, now thats different.
It's time to stand up against bigoted people, who create false stereotypes.

I guess it's how many times are you going to be hit in the face before you hit back. It's that simple, for me.

Michelle gets the warm and almost-unheard-of embrace and Nancy Reagan refused to curtsy. The Queen knows class when she sees it.

The country is circling the drain and this is what outrages people??

Didn't we fight a war to get away from these "royals" and their uptight rules? I think the queen could use some reality checks and if the worst is a first lady putting her hand on shoulder, she is pretty darn lucky!

HM, looking a bit frail, looked up at Mrs. O immediately after this scene, and suggested they keep in touch. I don't think the Queen is a punster, which suggests that she meant it.

It's okay if you speak your mind and if you dislike the president, that's okay too. Just don't bring up race. If you look at other Swamp columns, you'll see your share of black/muslim rants.

maybe i'm being thick, but how is anyone getting "racist" out of this article?

I believe most of us are excited because for the first time in eight years our President and First Lady are visiting other countries and being welcomed warmly. It is a good feeling. Do the naysayers really want the rest of the world to hate us and say we are arrogant (insert GWB)? Really. Is it not better to be welcomed and received graciously. This will allow us all to work together to avoid more senseless wars and dissent.

In case anyone has noticed, the Royals have dispensed with quite a bit of protocol over the years. This is a true display of admiration and appreciation and the Queen is truly a gracious lady. So, too, is Mrs. Obama. I, too, appreciate having an approachable First Family here on this side of the pond.

As long as Barack does not give the Queen a neck and shoulder massage, he is doing better than our previous president.

These comments say a lot about the Chicago of today, which is my home town.

If the adoration of the Obamas offend you, you may now see what is was like for those who did not understand the fawning oover Nancy and Ronald Reagan. Newt Gingrich seems to have dedicated his life to them.

Either way, how can you be so upset that someone is well-liked? Did you beat up the popular kids when you were in school?

Their was a statement put out by Buckingham palace that said that she did not break protocol... um, i dont believe i have ever been ashamed as I am now at you Republicans.... shame on you...shame. Quit your gripping and start coming up with some Answers if you want to be taken seriously... here and abroad. Conservative nations like Iran and Isreal would love to have ya!

Maybe it's time to toss caution to the wind, get the stick out your arse, forget protocol and just relax! Besides it's nice to be touched, try it sometime maybe you'll loosen up. Why can't we all just get along!!!

Why is it such a big deal to touch the queen? I'd love to see someone be a bit more brash and walk up to her, smack her on the butt and ask her 'what's happening, toots?'

That'd be the day.

Aww. Isn't the rule that if the Queen initiates, you are then allowed. Well, the Queen is doing the same.

Are you too lazy to read others threads? If I was posting a comment on a thread with no comments on it yet....how the hell do you think I would be talking about posts from this thread. There is a deffinite taint to the threads with Michelle on them. So tell me....do you find it offensive or not?????????????????????????????????

The Queen has a gift for making everyone feel comfortable, even pushy Americans who shove the Prince out of the way to get into the center of the picture picture. Some Americans have no clue as to what protocol is (hence the Ugly American phrase). The Queen was very gracious to the crass.

Obama has tapped his base...moveon.org to get out, defend and post positive Obie notes.

It is much easier when one feels free to do so, and not motivated by $$.

That such an innocuous story could generate such vitriol is a sign that our conservative brethren are suffering from Obama Derangement Syndrome. Maybe taking a nice walk and clearing your head would be a good idea.

Who cares about what the first lady is wearing....This trip is nothing more than a smoke screen from what is going on this week in Congress (Cap and Trade, which will result in HUGE increases in energy bills and prices at the pump), plus the Fed Budget which will grow the debt for many years to come.

So just keep fawning over the fancy dresses...but your grandchildren will be paying for Obama's run away spending.

It must be exhausting to everyone to willfully spend so much time in front of a magnifying glass looking for something to complain about Obama. One might think you all had some kind of anger issue.

I agree with Dave. I cringed when I saw the coverage of that sexist gesture by Bush. It was embarrassing and shameful and no amount of spin could make it otherwise.

Just another of the endless gaffes from the Obamas. Yet another diplomatic blunder from the One who was to restore our standing in the international community. Their arrogance and presumption is embarrassing. Only three years, nine months and eighteen days more of this.

George Bush evil , barrack good. I glossed over John Stewarts poltical coverage and now I am informed.
Sincerly,
A. Moron

Why is anyone so upset over the protocol issue! Prince Phillip may have been a little annoyed as he seems to be a very serious protocol person. The Queen, especially in her old age, seems to be getting more and more adorable. As her mother and sister and many other close friends have passed on and her son has finally settled down, she probably needs a nice hug from someone. Michelle is quite a warm person and the two of them probably just “hit it off” instantaneously.
The fun of growing old is the ability to loosen one’s grip on protocol. Go out and give your grandma a hug or at least give her a call.

"As long as Barack does not give the Queen a neck and shoulder massage, he is doing better than our previous president."

Angela Merkel was asking for it, dressing the say she did. :-o

Actually, Dave, W's big gaffe with the Queen was winking at her. Yikes.

Can't wait till the Obamas visit France!

Let's see is Blackie O speaks french.

Right Wing Conspirator, how much do you know about the Queen and what is correct and not correct, You are a HATER and maybe you have only 3years 9 months and 8 days left in this life.

Obama is not what I would call a good example of what a President should be. He does not project the air of being the most powerful man on earth. The President is not a good old boy and the position should be treated with the utmost respect and reference. The Presidency is an institution not a person. Some say he is bringing the postion down to earth, I say I don't want it brought down. But look at what we have to deal with so I guess we will have to put up with it. I don't want people to see our President and think he is just a buddy they can have a beer with. The position is more important than that to me. I guess we will have to consider what we elected and just try and get through it with Obama.

Oooooh, good one Joe. I guess you told me.

Idiot.

GW Bush famously pecked President Merkl of Germany on the cheek, a faux pas that many Republicans here are failing to mention.

"Only three years, nine months and eighteen days more of this." Add another 4 years to that total, please. (Heh Heh). Then get over it, and get used to the idea, because this country has changed for the better, and we are not going back to the dark ages, thank God!

It is very important that no matter how stilly we think another's customs and culture are, we still need to acknowledge and respect one each other's, especially when in another's country. Just as we expect others to do when in the U.S. It was a slip up by Michele, and she should be trained better when traveling abroad and representing the U.S. I don't think though that it was that serious to cause any long term feelings of animosity between us and the U.K. Better manors next time, we all make mistakes.

The White people that have a problem with the Queen and the First Lady showing affection for one another is a JEALOUS racist. The rest of us don't give a flying fig. If the Queen is not having a problem with it, Oh well.

I've seen it several times, PG; look at the JKRowling story.

eileen, Your not thick. Read the very first post in THIS thread.
It explains a bias, to create/lie about something that wasn't there and stir up people who take offense at reading a post from a thread that has nothing to do with that article as you correctly mentioned.

Many of the posts from the Obama Haters and the Cult of Obama Apologists are making a mountain out of a mole hill over the meeting of Barack and Michelle Obama and the Queen. The attacks from both groups range from the silly and ignorant to hateful. As a former McCain supporter who does not always agree with the President I believe Barack Obama and the First Lady have represented the country very well so far. I wish the Obama Haters, who are not representative of the Republican Party and Conservatives, would stop their groundless vicious attacks, and the Obama Cult would stop calling anyone who questions or opposes any of the President's programs racists. Both sides come across as vicious and hateful people. The United States and the World are in the middle of the biggest financial meltdown since the Great Depression. Although it is all right to offer constructive criticism of the President and be part of the loyal opposition, we all should hope Obama succeeds in successfully confronting this economic mess.

I saw the video this morning on the news. The Queen put her arm around Mrs. Obama first, then Mrs. Obama reciprocated. I think theObama's are doing a wonderful job representing the United States. I am proud again to be an American. I don't feel sorry for the sore losers and narrow minded people in this country who have posted nasty comments about the Obama's on this blog, but I do feel sorry for the people who have to live with them.

Hey, just be thankful it's not the Clintons visiting the president of France and his wife. Can't you just see Bill with Mrs. Sarkozy? For Mrs. Obama, give her a break. I'm one of those "right wingnuts" you folks talk about and I think she's doing a pretty good job in untested territory. It would have been nice if the Left wingnuts had ever said the same thing about a truly class lady, Laura Bush.

Notice the word some? Funny how that becomes a "hit in the face" for you. You still didn't answer...do you find Blackie-o offensive?

She should have given the queenie a good smack and said "when are you gonna knock off this royal nonsense and act like human beings?"

Please keep in mind that the Queen will be 83 in a few weeks. Perhaps protocol is more relaxed these days.

Actually, when you view the ENTIRE ceremony it becomes clear that the Obamas kept their BACKS to the cameras for far too long.
OK, you shook our hands, now stand by our sides so the photogs can see something besides your arses.
The Queen was directing traffic for the neophytes.

When is the world going to stop putting these royals on a pedestal? We are talking about the heirs of people who made themselves rich by raping the wealth of the people of the UK. There is nothing honorable about their position in society or their wealth. Who cares if Michelle touched her first or not!

Are you really that thick or is it you don't understand english? You point out THIS thread as if that means anything. What part of "prepare for" don't you understand? It had nothing to do with this thread...it has to do with posts on threads about Michelle that you can plainly look up yourself. Great googly moogly are you a sandwich short of a picnic?

OK, I find you referencing Mrs. Obama as "Blackie O", extremely offensive when it was never mentioned in this article.

Do I find it offensive, yes. Unfortunately it's people like you who want the black v white thing to continue.
You mentioned racist, you mentioned Blackie O, not me.

I imagine your next response will be of other's who have used that description. That has nothing to do with this thread, does it.

Boy I wish Princess Di was still around. I would love to see her and Michelle touching each other...

I imagine your next response will be of other's who have used that description. That has nothing to do with this thread, does it.

It most certainly does when you say "Prepare for more tasteless comments from the rabid. Some with their obvious racist taint". It is an observation from past threads about Michelle that contain SOME who have posted shady comments. If you find Blackie-O offensive....why are you so upset with my post. There most certainly are SOME offensive posts...this do not mean all....or yours.

Can't wait till they are in France!

Find the socialist agenda offensive.

Only British subjects are required to curtsy to the Queen. You can look it up.

But Obama gave the Queen a two-handed handshake, which was a violation of protocol.

I think that perhaps the dumbest people on the left and the right responded to this article. To those of you that think that criticizing the President is racists, give me a break. To those who think that unintentionally violating Royal protocol is a major offense, are you serious? We need to find a very large hole and bury the rabid morons from the left and right in it!

For heads of state, the reason for not touching the queen, as she is the British head of state, is to avoid the appearance of showing 'control' or superiority over her, thus patronizing the British nation.

For non-heads of state, the reason is to avoid over-familiarity, avoid security issues, and for to respect her 'personal space', just as one would anyone else's. People often get a bit over-excited about meeting someone famous and act in ways they would never dream of acting with anyone else they had just been introduced to. Sp, there's protocol to fall back on.

Bottom line: Barack is head of state, Michelle is not. Barack touching the Queen that way would have been patronizing, Michelle was not. It was on a personal level, after they had been talking for awhile, and it was not presumptuous in any way.

Now can we move on?

Man, what is it you don't get.
Don't you understand the generalizing... No, what the article was about, and what the first post said, is nothing more than Political activism.

This person is a racist.
This person wants the trash of black v white to continue.

I read the article, said how they had a moment, (adding now) and it is unfortunate the very first post contains attacks at black racists, and white racists. Also to prepare for the tasteless comments from the rabid.

Does that mean the black haters and the white haters.

There is a definite problem with this person because he can't get past the fact his post had a negative overtone to it when THE article didn't.
And I'm not upset. Just want facts to come out.

Seriously? After 8 long years of the uber "good old boy" in the Presidency, you honestly think that Obama is not a good example of what a president should be? The reason we suffered through a 2nd term of Bush was precisely because people saw him as someone they could sit down and have a beer with. Sorry, but I think you're just a bit confused.

Obama is busy dragging the country down the tubes and we get called racist for pointing out the fact that he has done nothing but throw money at problems like an out of control gambler. Must be disappointing to have supported him only to find he is already backing off of his promises the same as any other politician. Of course you will never admit you screwed up and put the most powerful contry in the world in the hands of a idividual who just did not have the background to do the job. You voted for him because some movie star or rock star told you to. Of course he will be forgiven for all in over there because they are still star struck. By the way, he is only half black and is half white so this title of first african american president is inadequate. Stop playing the race card everytime Obama screws up and we call him on it. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. (That is just an old saying and is not a reference to him being black and that he should be working in the kitchen)

And 20 years in a white hating church with reverend Wright.

Shall we overlook the negative statements from the preacher about whites?

One doesn't spend 20 years and not hear what is being said. Barack and Michelle heard and approved of every word Wright said.

Wright married the Obamas.
Wright baptized their 2 girls.
Wright was a "second father" to Obama.

The spewing came from the "church" the Obamas attended.

Don't forget the past, it predicts the future.

The Royal Press Office says no breach of etiquette took place. Time to change the headline.

The fact that it was the Times, and only the Times, that went into a tizzy over this says it all. The Times, lest one forgets is owned by Murdoch.

And I want the facts to come out. The fact that there are SOME who still have a racist tone in their posts. Pointing out racist comments does not mean I wish it to continue....quite the contrary....I want it to stop. Being oblivious to these comments does not further race relations. Pointing them out and condeming them does. Maybe you could take the time to object to what is offensive then I won't. Why is it you find it necessary to complain about my post when you make no mention of offensive ones? As far as negative....holy cow....have you even read the posts.

"The President is not a good old boy and the position should be treated with the utmost respect and reference." Posted by: quills

Aren't you a few months too late? It seems to me the last one was the one everyone thought of as a good old boy and everyone wanted to have a beer with.

Good grief, dont' the protocol police in England have nothing else to do except look for little breeches?

Gee. Where was all the anger, outrage and hatred when Bush gave Chancellor Merkel a freakin' back rub?

Who cares? Didn't we fight a war a couple hundred years back to be free of some inbred monarchy? These Republicans would have us living under British rule. Disgusting how much their lot hates America.

My Michelle is first class. America's first black princess. Disney could not find it to give us a black princess.

The Queen knows royalty when she see it.

Welcome to Bamelot.

Race, Race, Race, that's all you hear, it's the media that keeps it up. so what. The President is a person of color. He is also half white, but that is never brought up, why not? He is not a full fledged African American at all. Black, white, pink or Green the democrats are wrecking havoc on this country. Raising the debt that our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will have to deal with for years to come. I am not a dem or a gop, I do research and vote for the person I feel would lead our country in the right direction and it wasn't either one of them. This race nonsense is getting ridiculous. If it was a caucasian president would the media be all it. Quit the race garbage and get to the story,

This is just the first of many "human" things we will be seeing the Queen of England do.

There are going to have to be some significant changes in the Monarchy soon. The curtain isn't down on the Queen yet, but she's end the last act.

The problem is that the monarchy hasn't kept pace with societal trends, so much so that it is an anachronism now. So some bridges have to be built between the proper monarchy of the day that is occupied by a completely controlled automaton and the hip monarchy of tomorrow that will be occupied by a flawed human driven by his heart.

That's all this is. The Queen just wants to create a smooth transition for her son, and toward that end she is ready to send the new-age signals her handlers have been begging her make for a decade.

She doesn't have many opportunities to send these signals, and this opportunity gives her a big bang for her buck.

Every GOOF on the planet will answer this article including me. For those who object that the first lady touched the Queen, get over it and the racist SOBs keep your crap in the basement where it belongs.
By the way I am white and am a independent. I guess the losers will go to extremes to discredit our President.

The President BOWED to the King of Saudi Arabia today, thereby disgracing the office of the President of the U.S. Another break in protocol---the King gets a handshake.

This bow was for our benefit. Obama bows to a Muslim king and the first lady degrades the Queen by touching her, a gesture that breaches protocol that goes back to the Middle Ages.

What a deadly duo.

The Queen was frisking her to see that she didn't make off with any of the silverwear,

Note the queen did NOT touch Ms. President, She had gloves on.

Wow! Mrs. O is the best! The queen should feel honored that Mrs. O showed compassion towards her and put her arm around the aging monarch. I'd say to Michelle, "You go girl!"

White House press sec. Robert Gibbs on Obama and Queen Elizabeth ( April 2009 ) :

The president remarked to me this morning that, uh—uh, her sensibilities sort of reminded her a bit, uh, of, uh, his grandmother only with a much bigger house.

Barack Obama on his Grandmother ( 2008 ) :

She is a, uh, typical white person who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know, you know, there’s a reaction that’s been bred into our experiences that—that don’t go away and that sometimes, uh, come out in—in the wrong way.

"What a deadly duo."

Oo-oo-oo! "Deadly!!"
Someone is taking himself WAY too seriously!

Great stuff here....

http://www.3stuff.org

If you look at the video, it looks like the Queen was going to introduce Michelle to the woman on their left. That's why her hand was on Michelle's back--to steer her to their left. Furthermore, the Queen's hand is closed, and it's in the middle of Michelle's back, not around her waist.

I also read that Michelle curtsied to the Queen. Americans don't curtsie to anybody!

Michelle should have taken the time to learn the proper protocol before she left. Come on, get it together.
