Report of right-wing extremist threats is part of Homeland Security's job.

Janet Napolitano, homeland security secretary, says her agency's report on the threat potentially posed by right-wing extremists "struck a nerve'' with her.

The former U.S. attorney says that because she was "personally involved in the Timothy McVeigh prosecution," she paid attention in the briefing she got on this report, produced April 9 but only publicized this week.

The Homeland Security assessment of the threat of right-wing extremism -- while citing no specific threats -- suggested that the political and economic environment today, including the election of an African American president, offers recruiters for extremist groups a ripe opportunity. It is reminiscent, the report says, of the environment in the mid-1990s, when McVeigh bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City.

But this does not mean DHS is targeting political activism, she says.

"Let me be very clear: We monitor the risks of violent extremism taking root here in the United States. We don´t have the luxury of focusing our efforts on one group; we must protect the country from terrorism whether foreign or homegrown, and regardless of the ideology that motivates its violence," Napolitano said of the right-wing extremist threat report in a statement issued today.

"We are on the lookout for criminal and terrorist activity but we do not -- nor will we ever -- monitor ideology or political beliefs,'' she said. "We take seriously our responsibility to protect the civil rights and liberties of the American people, including subjecting our activities to rigorous oversight from numerous internal and external sources.''

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) was looking for more than a statement today. he was looking for an apology from Napolitano.

Among the factors to be taken into consideration today, the Homeland Security report noted, is war veterans returning home and having trouble reengaing in society. Some could be vulnerable to recruitment by extremist groups.

McVeigh was a veteran of the Gulf War.

"To characterize men and women returning home after defending our country as potential terrorists is offensive and unacceptable.'' Boehner said in his own statement today. "The Department of Homeland Security owes our veterans an apology.

"Furthermore, the Secretary of Homeland Security owes the American people an explanation for why she has abandoned using the term 'terrorist' to describe those, such as al Qaeda, who are plotting overseas to kill innocent Americans, while her own department is using the same term to describe American citizens who disagree with the direction Washington Democrats are taking our nation.

"Everyone agrees that the department should be focused on protecting America, but using such broad-based generalizations about the American people is simply outrageous."

When a home made bomb goes off next to you, you end up just as dead whether the bomb was built by a leftist, a rightist, a radical islamicist, or a white supremecist. Timothy McVeigh or Osama Bin Ladin, there is no difference.

The veterans bit in the report was out of bounds. Unless you can back up the allegations with specific plans/plots (which they can't), or at least point to statistical data that puts veterans at a higher risk of crime than their comparable counterparts in civilian population (e.g., generally men 18-50), then show a little respect for them. In the deluded mind of liberal democrats, profiling Arab males at an airport, a group entirely responsible for carrying out 9/11, is out of bounds, but singling out our own veterans for extra scrutiny and painting them as a dangerous bunch of nuts is just fine. It's this kind of backasswards thinking that makes people hate liberals.

GROW UP RIGHT-WING PSYCHOPATHS!

The Republican party runs their outfit like some sort of third world dictatorship. If they happen to lose an election (or two in their case) they start going around shooting people and blowing up stuff. They're acting like a bunch of petulant children....only with guns.

DHS is a useless joke. Just look how they run airport security. Checking the shoes of 12 year old blond girls is about as silly as you can get. Why not find and deport illegals from the middle east? Why nor secure our borders and ports? DHS is just another layer of government that doesn't do anything but spend money.

Maybe you should have brought that up when REPUBLICAN President George Bush was busy creating it, Mikey.

Right-wing extremism is a problem in America. Undiluted, It can be equally potent as al-Qaeda's ideology. This has nothing to do with most Republicans and their stupid tea parties but it has everything to do with the Klan, neo-Nazis, militia groups and other assorted monsters who also associate themselves with the Republican party.

Republicans know this and are trying to use concern about it against Obama. In their perfect world, violence by reactionary whites would go completely unnoticed by the feds, who apparently should focus and rounding up and abusing brown people. Republicans are playing with fire in this case, and they know it.

Okay, Mike C. I'll bleach my locks and won't be dangerous anymore.

In this single act Napolitano REVEALED THE NEW HYPER-PARTISAN POLITICIALIZATION OF DHS.

This supposed report has nothing to do with "intelligence" or "security" - whatsoever. Sadly, it is, in fact, an overt partisan 'scare tactic' device, designed and crafted to disparage and make 'suspect' - ALL THOSE Americans who (dare) disagree with the present Admins PARTISAN POLITICAL POSITIONS.

CLEARLY, THE REAL DANGER exists at the top of DHS; directly with Napo and her hyper-partisan and misguided functionaries.

It appears there is NO office in this administration that Obama, et al., will NOT EXPLOIT and manipulate for additional political control. The statements, party positions and grotesque assumptions cited in this report are NOT about national safety. Rather, they are designed with the intent to create an apparent 'legitimate fear' (where one does NOT actually exist), then magnify the false fear and use it as basis to obtain additional control over our nation - - under the FALSE PRETEXT of legitimate national security.

DHS is now being grossly manipulated as a political party tool. - Napolitano is completely UNFIT TO SERVE IN THIS OFFICE.

Flo, you'd have to become 12 again, too!

Don't look now, but your living in a Police State. It's time for a new Homeland Security Head. Napolitano should submit her resignation immediately, And anyone else that had a hand in this latest disgrace.

Other than Clinton making some sort of vague reference, what is the Terry McVeigh - Right Wingnut connection?

With all due respect, bombings always seem to be the work product of Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers and Weathermen Friends, the Kacynski bomber guy, all revered, venerable Leftists. Here's a legitimate teaching moment, Leftists. Who was the source of inspiration for Terry McVeigh? I understand that he attacked a Federal building, but who was his surrogate philosophical guru that spurred him into action. Or is this just pure Clinton anecdotal propaganda that just resonates no matter what? I never considered him to be no more than a despicabe domestic terrorist that was kept alive too long on the Federal dime. I would be receptive to an explanation as to how Terry McVeigh legitimately represents the thinking of a Right Wingnut, like what you may tend to find in a Swamp.

What concerns me most is this statement: "rightwing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat." Google "Terrorist training camps in the U.S." and see who's operating them. If DHS (and Congress) think the biggest threat is the rightwing, that implies they know nothing about Jihadist camps right here in America!?? How can we ask foreign countries like Pakistan to shut down their camps when we allow them to continue operating on our own soil? How can we call the “greatest” threat rightwing Americans when the report is full of speculation on what “may” or “could” increase recruitment, while Jihadist camps are operating in full swing across the nation? How can they afford the effort to worry about what "may" be when they should be countering know threats right here on U.S. soil?

I’ve written all of my representatives expressing my concern over the Islamic training camps. I suggest everyone reading this do the same. Our nation’s resources should be directed toward addressing known threats, not making up threats based on very, very poor evidence.

Hmmmm, environmentalist whackos burn down ski resorts, bomb car dealerships, but nothing on that. Code Pink goes after people and throws things at them. Left wing student radicals throw pies and God knows what else at guest speakers they disagree with. Yet, it's the "right wingers" we must be wary of. Yet, the "president" has no problem with cavorting with left-wing bombing nut William Ayers. Give me a break! This abomination of an administration needs to be evicted. .. . immediately! Do we have recall power for the president??

This report is the kind of thing that drives our country farther apart, and rightfully so. I personally think there should be a few jobs on the line here, starting with Janet Napolitano. There is clearly a political agenda being pushed here. After reading this report I would not blame anyone who feels they fall into one of the categories, which is about half or more of this country, to start stocking up on weapons and getting ready to defend themselves, against the government. Watch how the sell of weapons is going to keep going though the roof. History shows us that this is how fascism normally starts, and has led to the slaughter of hundreds of millions of people around the world. For a report like this to be put out by our government, there is no excuse for it. President Obama needs to do the right thing here, and step up to the plate, fire Ms Napolitano, and then apologize to everyone who was offended by this report, and let it be known that this will not be allowed on his Watch. Anything less will be taken as he agrees and supports it, and will continue to drive this country of ours farther apart.

Django, McVeigh was hanging out with the "right-wing" militia crowd and conspiring with Terry Nichols, etc. It's not too hard to find some background on him. Got google?

Quark, where are these "jihadist training camps" in the U.S.? Gimme a map, or a few addresses, and I'll write. Not gonna write on the basis of a blog posting short on details.

This just released report was ordered by the BUSH ADMIN.

Flo,
Thanx for the explanation. I shall do precisely as u suggest. By"right-wing" militia crowd, I presume that you mean folks so mad that they are just going to storm whatever they need to storm and take over. Kind of like the SDS Types of the 60s and 70s. I don't dispute their existence, but I do have a hard time seeing the "McVeigh Is One of Them (Right) Wingnuts" kind of connection that always permeates the discussion on Who Is and Who Isn't the Real Extremist. I can guarantee you it wasn't folks like me that allowed him to hang around for as long as he did, after his guilt was legally established.
