On the way to his appearance at the FBI on a sun-splashed morning in Washington, President Barack Obama was asked about that "photo-shoot'' that one of the presidential aircraft had with an F-16 making passes over the Statue of Liberty this week.
"It was a mistake, as was stated,'' said Obama, whose administration had issued an apology about a "photo-op" fly-over that scared many in a city once traumatized by stray airliners, "and it will not happen again."
The president suggested that he was just as surprised as the media were about the New York flyover of the Air Force jumbo jet and trailing fighter -- the White House was caught off guard by questions about it at the daily press briefing on Monday.
"It was something we found out about along with all of you,'' Obama said, asked about the event by a reporter today, "and it will not happen again.''

Could you image of Barrack Hussain Obama was a Republican! The media would have a field day with the administration!

"A mistake," he says, without acknowledging that it was his White House that made the "mistake." Almost 100 days and Obama has yet to admit to being fallible even once. Beware of arrogance and ego, a bad combination in a dicta...I mean, a president. Incidentally, reading or watching the liberal media, one would never have known it was the White House which ordered the plane incursion into NYC. Obama doesn't need his own Pravda; he's got the NYT, WashPost and the SunTimes.

He just keeps making Bush look highly competent, which is simply amazing. O'Bozo indeed.
Posted by: O-Bummer | April 28, 2009 12:11 PM
Yeah, just a mistake! And why are the feds spending all that cash for a "photo op" in this current economy? Maybe the prez just doesn't care?
Posted by: Sheila | April 28, 2009 12:16 PM
Just can't get out of the campaign mode - photo - op for the White House?
Posted by: springfieldspringfield | April 28, 2009 12:26 PM
Man these people are just out of touch with the world. Stupid and insensitive. And how much taxpayer money did it cost for this photo op?
Posted by: Mike | April 28, 2009 12:27 PM
Amazing that Obama can get away with this. He is claiming he didn't know about this operation but isnt it his job to know? When will the media stop giving him a free pass?
Posted by: Mike | April 28, 2009 12:56 PM
This administration keeps getting ODUMBA by the minute!
Posted by: j | April 28, 2009 12:56 PM
WOW !! You mean "The Pres" missed a photo-op? Guess the Air Force didn't tell him?
Posted by: Bud | April 28, 2009 1:18 PM
I find the White House's shock laughable. The White House is constantly updated on the status and location of ALL Presidential transport including backups! They knew. Just sounds better to say they were in the dark about it.
Posted by: Rich S. | April 28, 2009 1:23 PM
Yeah, a mistake, But the press seems to be giving BO a pass (again). One can only imagine the press furor if the previous administration had made the "mistake".
Posted by: joe | April 28, 2009 1:28 PM
Pass the BUCK....
Seems to be the story w/ Mr. O. and his awesome team in the White House.
If NOONE in the white house knows where Air Force One is who does???
But this is the typical answer from the Present President.

How about putting out a memo to all government departments stating that they should refrain from making any expenditure not vital to the day to day operation of the government. You know, kind of like any other business would do.
Although in terms of the overall fed budget, the cost of this was insignificant, every penny does count and the photo op was not necessary.
Posted by: Drez | April 28, 2009 1:35 PM
A mistake? Its a whooper. What a bonehead stunt. What's funny is the dems from N.Y. that put you in office. And you scared the hell out of them. Well all you who voted him your President, I guess you will just have to live with him for now. Heads should roll big time. But, its probably just another oversight. Since this guy took office we have had a goof up after another. Its time to look in the mirror, and you people ostracized President Bush.
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2009 1:39 PM
All of you are stupid . Bush started a war that has taken thousands of lives for no reason and you are complaining for air force one flying in New York. STOP WATCHING FOX NEWS > IT IS KILLING YOUR BRAIN CELLS.
Posted by: O'rlando | April 28, 2009 1:47 PM
This is a hugee stpory. The implications will haunt our country for decades. Dozens, I repeat, dozens of people were scared for a few minutes. This is the greatest tragedy in the history of our nation. Pearl Harbor and 9./11 pale in comparisson. Can we surrvive as a people after this trauma? Will anyone ever forget where they were when they heard a plane flew by New york City?We must immediately remove this governmnet as a result of the henious crime against humanity.

At what cost? Sixty Eight Thousand Dollars per hour to fly Air Force One.

Fox is not carrying Obamas speech tomorrow. That's awesome! We all know the Obama experiment is one big failure, why keep watching him lie over and over again?
Posted by: bill | April 28, 2009 2:15 PM
This isn't about Bush. This is about Obama and him messing up! This was a major screw up and now he is trying to pass blame. This isn't a republican or democrat issue... this is a common sense issue! don't use a grave site for thousands of innocent Americans for your own personal gain!

"'It was something we found out about along with all of you,'' Obama said, asked about the event by a reporter today, 'and it will not happen again.'''
He found out about it along with all of us?!!! And he is the Commander in Chief of the Air Force and other armed services? Oh! I feel much better now! Yeah, we're safe!

This is EXACTLY why the Military Types should NEVER be allowed to implement anything without civilian approval.
Posted by: rico | April 28, 2009 2:27 PM
If and when Obama’s “photo op” mistake rises to the level of unnecessarily killing two hundred thousand men, women and children, the loss of four thousand precious American Servicemen and Women with countless wounded and the waste of trillions of dollars, I guess then we will have to take the insipid drivel of most of these commenters seriously.
Until then we’ll just have to endure the mindless babble of the same people that have destroyed our economy and moral standing in the world while we work to once again repair our country from the damage caused by these naive sheep.
No matter how hard you scrape at those “W” bumper stickers you are still responsible for this terrible mess.
Posted by: Matt | April 28, 2009 2:31 PM
Wow, these are frightening comments. It just goes to show that there are a lot of people who will not support a democrat under any circumstance.
1) Can you honestly think that the President of the United States is involved in EVERYTHING? Not a stretch to take him at his word that he and the senior staff of the government found out about the mission when everyone else did.
2) Obama has been refreshingly up front about taking responsibility for mistakes, especially compared to Bush II. I realize it's a low bar, but that was probably Bush jr's biggest failing. A total inability to admit a mistake.
3) Not everything Obama does will be "right" or we will all agree with, but I think it's CRYSTAL CLEAR that Obama is a better choice than McCain, Cheney of Bush II.
4) I violently disagreed with the Iraq war (I was Army Infantry under Reagan and Bush 1 - both great presidents) but tried my best to support Bush II. It's easy to snipe from the couch, isn't it?

Posted by: DD | April 28, 2009 2:39 PM
Can't wait to see the figures on the estimated FINANCIAL IMPACT of this stunt. An apology? No thanks. The Obama government owes some businesses some COMPENSATION. Buildings were evacuated, for pete's sake. Business came to a standstill, and for what? So Obama's people could put together some Nice Photographs for the NEXT Presidential campaign? People were genuinely frightened. I HOPE THEY SUE!
Posted by: Bluejeans | April 28, 2009 2:51 PM
wow...a plane flew too low?? what a horrible president!!
the only way he could be worse would be to like, lie to the american public and the world turning america's worldwide image into a joke, start 2 unnecessary wars costing hundreds of thousands of lives, and "lead" the way into the worst economic crisis in decades by fattening the pockets of his already too-corrupt and rich friends.
oh wait.............................
Posted by: joe | April 28, 2009 3:00 PM
What a sad time to be a Republican. Bush sends thousands of US troops to their deaths in Iraq, as well as billions of our taxpayer dollars to a pointless "war", and then you turn around and get outraged by the current administration taking a few pictures of a plane? Amazing.
Posted by: Mark | April 28, 2009 3:07 PM
The dums have everything - they have a dumocratic house, a dumocratic senate, they have a dumocratic president, they have an embarrassingly friendly press..
Those of you who still have some judgment, please ask yourselves this question: If this had happened with a Republican president would it have been treated in the press like this, more or less like just a "mistake"?
Just ask yourself that question and answer it HONESTLY. You don't have to respond to me, that's not important, but what IS important is that you DO ask yourself that question.
Posted by: Terry | April 28, 2009 3:11 PM
For the record, it's not actually Air Force One until the president is on board.
And stop being nincompoops. This is a non-issue compared with everything else that's going on.
Posted by: Rich R | April 28, 2009 3:18 PM
this would NEVER have happened to a republican president!!!
he would have been on vacation in texas 40 of his first 100 days in office letting his VP ruin the country for him.
Posted by: joe | April 28, 2009 3:20 PM
Obama is sending thousands of US troops to their death's in Afghanistan and soon to Pakistan and don't hold your breath too long folks - Iran and eventually N. Korea.
I guess he'll have a bigger "War Monger" reputation than any other US president. Amazing when you actually think about it.
Where's Don these days and his daily body count from Afghanistan? BRING THEM HOME SAFE NOW! HUH DON?
little billr - you got nothing to say about the death tolls lately?
Posted by: springfieldspringfield | April 28, 2009 3:23 PM
Really, you think the President is updated in his daily briefings about this stuff? He signs off on photo shoots of a plane, not his plane??? Give me a break. That is so much worse than starting a war on a lie.
Posted by: Jean S | April 28, 2009 3:26 PM

Posted by: marsha mattocks | April 28, 2009 3:31 PM
It's amazing to think that in the name of trimming budgets, anyone could suggest a military unit's readiness should be compromised. There's no effective difference between the Presidential Airlift Group involved here and a fighter wing based in Bahrain. Both units have an obligation to keep their birds maintained and their aircrews qualified. That means air hours, whether it's an F-22 or a VC-25. So they overflew New York. That's airspace the pilots of the PAG need to be familiar with.
This was a routine military training flight the White House would not have known about and it would not have needed to approve.

Posted by: juantwo | April 28, 2009 4:28 PM
only idiots could have voted for this boob!!!!!
Posted by: juantwo | April 28, 2009 4:29 PM
So Jim, instead of using the planes GPS this one particular pilot needed to be familiar with flying much lower than cruising altitude over lower Manhattan, and not on a flight path that would avoid downtown (i.e. if he was planning to land at one of the NYC airports). The only reason he would need to "be familiar" with flying this type of pattern would be if he was planning on flying a plane into a building. He in effect spit in the face of all the surviving family members of the people who died on 9/11 and all the people who survived themselves. Even if you voted for Obama how can you not be outraged by this?
Posted by: Steve | April 28, 2009 4:50 PM
Hearkening back to the Bush administration every time Obama makes a mistake is getting very tiresome.
Will this go on for four years? Eight? Twelve?
Should we all now remember back to when the Democratic Party was the party supporting slavery? When Lincoln, a Republican, fought to hold the union together and then freed the slaves while the dems did everything they could to stop him?
If Obama messes up, which he will, (he isn't really the messiah) admit it. Admit his part and move on. To do otherwise would be much like what you say the Bush administration did.
Posted by: Charles | April 28, 2009 4:59 PM
Obama is an idiot, and his 'appointees' are criminals. Why is everyone so suprised by this? How many millions of people voted for this guy? Sad...the lunatics are running the mental hospital.

Posted by: Makanda | April 28, 2009 5:18 PM
stop making excuses for him. he's the freaking president and he needs to take responsibility for something that happened on his watch. imagine the terror that people felt yesterday. stop making it a non-issue. it's a big deal, and if it was bush, dems would have a field day with it. dems have such a double standard. they can say whatever they want about bush and republicans, but republicans have no say in how we feel the president is doing. this is crap. and this man of "integrity" you elected is allowing unborn children to be murdered. his admin. says we should suspect returning soldiers to be terrorists, and interrogation that saved countless US civilians lives when we were in grave danger is now a crime. welcome to your crappy change, America.

It just reinforces the value of communication.
If it had been announced a couple of days prior that one of the presidential aircraft would be flying low over the Statue of Liberty in order to get a shot of the two of them together, it would have been an event that people would have turned out to see. Schedule it during lunch hour so as not to disrupt business too much. Instead, it's a surprise, and New Yorkers, understandably edgy, are up in arms about it.
It's a big communication and PR failure, nothing more. I hope they'll learn from it and do better next time.
Posted by: DaveB | April 28, 2009 5:41 PM
Another bamboozel by Obama. These guys just don't connect with what happened on 9/11 or the whole issue of terrorism and the importance of interrogation.
Posted by: Chuck | April 28, 2009 5:43 PM
Real precious, those complaining about the expense.
How much do you suppose it cost to drag an aircraft carrier to the coast off San Diego so that a petulant little boy could dress up in a flyer outfit, fly in on a aircraft jet and make a "mission accomplished" speech that proved to be six years premature -- and counting?
Posted by: a blinkin | April 28, 2009 5:47 PM
Initially it took me by quite a surprise, then I thought about it for a second and I wish they would do the low pass with the jumbo jet and fighter jets at least once a week.
Obama took the state of New York in the election, and the majority of the elected officials in New York are Democrats, so they deserve nothing but the very best the White House can give them.
I also hope that the Mayor and Gov keep raising the taxes on them....tax the liberals to death!!! Go for it. Take every dime they have.
Posted by: TI | April 28, 2009 5:52 PM
Its a typical lie from our president again. His party also is built on nothing but lies and tax cheats. When are the people going to understand the person they put in office. When they do it will be too late.

The White House didn't decide to do this "photo op". They knew nothing about it. The president doesn't decide everthing that happens every day! He isn't responsible!

Yes, Mike. It is the leader of the free world's job to know where every Presidential transport is at all times. That's next on his to do list after the Presidential Daily Briefing. "Catch-22 in Iraq. Check. Swine Flu Pandemic. Check. Collapsing Financial System. Check. Okay wait, I'm missing a 747 and an F-16, where are they?!?!" Moron.

Where's my jet?
.
Has any one seen my 40 foot tall, 140 foot wide airplane?
.
I know I left it here...
.
Come on Secret Service, you tryin to put one over on the B Ho?
.
Come on man, that thing costs $100,000,000, that's almost a days worth of spending for me.
.
C'mon, someone?

Whether you a republican or democrat we both must agree what was done was not right to the people of New York. Some people were not thinking clear with this decision. How does Obama or his staff not know the where his other plane is? Its sort of hard to understand.

Posted by: Terry | April 29, 2009 11:14 AM
Lou, I haven't followed the pattern of Pete's comments (has he made many?) but his comment didn't strike me as particularly belonging to any wing. Considering the history of the past several administrations, there's been lots of stuff going on that didn't go down well with the public.
And Pete, "we the people" ARE in charge. Our misfeasance or nonfeasance while we're in charge doesn't make us any less so; it just means that the ship of state has no rudder. I keep saying: One of the great things about this country is that we can hold a revolution every second November, without firing a shot. All we have to do is, do it!

And if the White House used Photoshop for the picture, Terry would be the first one here screaming about how the Obama Adminstration was being dishonest using doctored photos and that there should be an immediate criminal investigation ( using any torture necessary) to find out what they are hiding.
