When the president speaks, the picture is everything.

There were plenty of flags arrayed on stage when President Barack Obama delivered his midday address on the economy this week at Georgetown University.

But there was no Jesus.

Georgetown covered up the monogram "IHS"-- symbolizing the name of Christ on the pediment of the stage where Obama spoke in Gaston Hall because the White House had asked the Jesuit-run university to cover up all signs and symbols there.

""In coordinating the logistical arrangements for yesterday's event, Georgetown honored the White House staff's request to cover all of the Georgetown University signage and symbols behind Gaston Hall stage," Julie Green Bataille, associate vice president for communications at Georgetown, told CNSNews.com.

"The White House wanted a simple backdrop of flags and pipe and drape for the speech, consistent with what they've done for other policy speeches," she said. "Frankly, the pipe and drape wasn't high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross above the GU seal and it seemed most respectful to have them covered so as not to be seen out of context."

The White House says that it simply wanted a backdrop for the president's speech consistent with his other appearances: Flags and drapes.

"Decisions made about the backdrop for the speech were made to have a consistent background of American flags, which is standard for many presidential events,'' a White House spokesman, Shin Inouye, said today. "Any suggestions to the contrary are simply false."

Georgetown, run by the Jesuit order, is one of the most prestigious Catholic colleges, Cyperspace.net notes. Roman Catholics traditionally use "IHS" as an abbreviation for Jesus' name. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia: "St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted the monogram in his seal as general of the Society of Jesus (1541) and thus became the emblem of his institute."

Beginning to wonder-
Obama blocking the news media and now the Churches-
What nexrt?

Catholic League founder Bill Donohue's fuse is burning fast on this one ..... expect a foaming-at-the-mouth outburst before sunset!

Goes along with Obama forgetting that America was born on Christian principles or that Christians are a majority in America. We are basically a Christian nation that promotes religious freedom. Our most precious founding documents and laws are based on Judaeo-Christian beliefs. I think he has too many years of listening to Rev. Wright, his Muslin buddies from the Chicago south side, and the lefties who love to blame America for the ills of world. But here sure does reach out to the Islamic world. Interesting article, Mark, thanks.

Religious diversity should always be respected and not hidden. I am sure had he been asked to respect other religious symbols for his speeches his office would have complied. I am quite surprised and disappointed at the University covering IHS, when even on our money we state "In God We Trust." I learned of this happening from ThisIsDiversity.com and am saddened that it has not become a larger discussion.

Gosh, Bubba, what were you spiking your tea with yesterday? Your thinking is so biased I fear you are dittoing. Religious freedom means just that.

Sorry to break this news to Inkster, but a very large number of people believe Barack is an instrument of His will.

He didn't move from East View Park to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. on dumb luck.

So, the right wing fanatics who wanted to use government to impose their religious views on everyone else, had better think again.

Separation of church and state should look better to them now that a liberal Christian is in the position to impose his views.

You wouldn't want that, I'm sure.

Oh, so are Muslims not as American as Christians and Jews? Where do the Hindus fit in? The atheists, Bhuddists, and Native Americans?

Are they all to get down on their knees to the Superior Christians and Jews to thank them for allowing the other religions to be practiced? Are they to hide their faith so as not to upset the Christians? Must they convert to become as American as Bubba?

Bubba-
Yee-Haaaww! You betcha!
I say we go shoot them muslim lovers, those non-American Christian haters! Yes sir, either pony up to the Christian view of things or you can just leave the country. While we're at it, we'll get all those nasty perverted gays, all those libs spending tax money (not George Bush, he was a good Christian all into smaller government and tax cuts during wartime)
Yeee-Hawww! I'm gunna go fire up my pick-em-up truck and down a few beers, then I'm gunna throw a tea party and show off my American pride, cause if you dont agree with me, YOU CAN LEAVE! YEE-HAWWW!!

Your friend,
Cleetus

(No offense intended to non-christians or gays named Cleetus...)

Bubba, you are a relic living in modern times....like most pugs are. If only you pugs lived by example, maybe you would have better luck converting the world to your belief system. For the record, I am undeclared with a leaning towards budhhism if anything. I would certainly not consider myself a christian anymore as I tend to see that as a brand of either ignorance or living in the past.

The Jesuits should have explained to the White House why they could not comply with their request and if Obama decided not to speak at Georgetown, so be it.

Go read what it says on American Money, are you not an American.

Many religions practice In God We Trust Inky. Not just Christians.

There is no end to the harping by the Obama haters. Anything they can do to try and divide Americans. Religion? Taxes? Puppy dogs? Pirates?

No real surprise. Fear, Hatred and Division. It's all they've got.

Good point Gladys-
But In God We Trust is need more than ever with Obama in office and especially bowing to a King.

"Then Peter remembered the words that Jesus had spoken: "Before the cock crows you will deny me three times."
May God have mercy on the souls of the Georgetown administration. By covering up the name of Jesus, they have denied Him.

"Wheresoever any are gathered in my name, there am I also."

You are totally over reaching with your argument – there is nothing in our constitution that either "allows" or "dis allows" the practice of any religion. Because we are a nation that was formed an the basis of Judeo Christian philosophies and thought ,is no threat to the beliefs you speak of- in fact, I would challenge you to find any other society that is based on the belief that your humanity, regardless, of your faith provides you with rights for no other reason other than your existence. This basic foundation of our founding documents was completely based on the Judeo/Christian, value of human life belief system. Ironically enough, I would especially challenge you to defend the human rights , or religious freedoms of societies whose dominant religion is Islam…
The separation of Church and State was one of the key drivers sparking the revolution in this country- this is also a fundamental philosophy of the founding documents.
This has been morphed into a convenient argument for the complete removal of religion from anything considered part of the "public" domain, which seems to be the basis of your argument. Government should have no say in the support or the non support of any religion. Somehow we have gotten to the point that we should be protected, by law, from being exposed to any religious symbolism or speech.
This was never the intent of the founders- who did base much of the creation of the constitution on their religious beliefs....that’s just how things are.
... that Georgetown allowed the symbols of state to cover the religious symbols-which are the foundation of that college , to me is pretty spineless- that President Obama thought it was necessary to cover up the religious imagery should scare anyone of faith regardless of religion. But I guess he got his photo op..

This makes me so sad.
What IHS means to me:
I remember fondly writing that inscription on every paper I ever wrote as a child at Holy Trinity School.
IHS-The pride it gave me to be associated by my father, brother, myself and son and daughter with Gonzaga HS, Georgetown, Georgetown Medical School, Loyola University in New Orleans, St. Louis University, and Jesuit High School in Tampa, FL.
I have had my moral compass tuned and pointed on the right path by amazing Jesuit priests who taught me to think and have the courage to stand up for Jesus in His Holy Name as a woman for others.
I would not have covered up the IHS symbol of The Society of Jesus for any man and I really don't think St. Ignatius would have either.
It is not the Jesuit Way.

Boo Hoo...my facts speak for themselves. I never intended to marginalize any religious beliefs, that is why we have it in the Bill of Rights. Our Constitution does not contain any Shira laws that would prevent Flo from using her computer, going to school, or "slapping her around if she disobeys a male relative rather is based on Judeao-Christian tolerance that allows her to do so. You lefties only tolerate diversity and the freedoms that suit your clueless ideology. A proud vet who stand on his own merits and resents being labeled a "potential extremists" by the Obama kool aid.

But In God We Trust is need more than ever with Obama in office and especially bowing to a King.

I can tell this "bowing" thing real has you bothered Inky. What exactly do you have against respect? You didn't seem to mind Bush kissing the Popes ring. I thought your religion was about respecting others....guess I was wrong.

That was not respect- that was deferrence and bowing is a symbol of subjugating yourself. You can be respectful and bow-but as the POTUS who is representing the US he has no right to present himself ( on our behalf)as beholden to any world leader.

As to the kissing of the ring- if you are a Catholic, the pope represents Christ on earth- that simple...you can agree to that premise or not and a case could be made that since Bush is not Catholic, why would he do this... thats a reasonable argument. The point you are missing is that the Saudi king represents a politcal relationship- not a spiritual one... or at least that is what Obama tells us anyway.

NEWS FLASH- Georgetown has joined Notre Dame as NO
LONGER CATHOLIC!!
If Obama is a Christian as he claimed then WHY??? Must IHS be covered? Why No Jesus???????? It is my opinion Barack Obama is an anti-Catholic biggot. His actions in appointing marginal Catholics who do not practice their faith to political appointments, attemtping to appoint those who insult the Holy Father with their beliefs to the ambassadorship to the Vatican and nowthis! Again it is my opinion that Obama is an anti-Catholic biggot.

"Our Constitution does not contain any Shira laws"

Our Constitution also doesn't contain any Judeo-Christian laws. It is a secular document of a secular government not a religious tract.

Georgetown University is Catholic first, American second. By covering up the IHS, they have stated their priorities loud and clear. Not only Catholic, but all Christians should be outraged at this travesty of a university. And Obama is about as Christian as Saddam Hussein.

Wow guys...really ignorant aren't we? So since when does religious freedom mean freedom of all religion? I love how you twist the words of our forefathers...clever. The freedom to practice your own religion means being able to ACTUALLY practice it without being condemned. This "american" who claims hes christian needs to hide it? Because hes really muselim or because he has no backbone. Or C..all of the above.

I am guessing that had the President given the speech with the religious symbols in view, he would have gotten all kinds of flack from the far right for using religious symbols as props or trying to make it look like he was speaking in the name of Jesus. Not to mention all the shrieking about a pro-choice President speaking at a Catholic university.

We do have separation of church and state (Thank God!!) so I don't have a problem with a Presidential policy speech given without religious symbols in the picture. This administration hasn't done anything to restrict religious freedom, so I am not worried about this kind of thing.

PS. I have a master's degree from Georgetown.

To respond to one comment above, being other than Judeo-Christian does not make one less of an American. However, it is not particularly supportive of America to deny its heritage. There are countless writings by the founders about this issue. Even Newsweek reports that the vast majority of the founders writing are based on the Bible. That would be a Judeo-Christian foundation. And there are more specific Christian roots as well. A slogan during the Revolutionary War was "No king but King Jesus." On different occasions the U.S. Supreme Court declared that this is a Christian Nation (not in requiring Christianity, but in its history and foundations). The founders were also smart enough to write a Constitution that referred to "God."

Much of this was summarized nicely in U.S. House Resolution 888:

http://churchvstate.blogspot.com/2008/05/house-resolution-888.html

Where does this 'a nation founded on your Bronze Age sky buddy' stuff come from? The first successful colony in what became the US was established to make money for its investors back home in England.

This Kool-Aid-serving phony wanting a backdrop of flags is just as idiotic as him wanting anything religious covered up.

When you're done looking at in god we trust on that bill which started in 1957, look to the left of it at the Great seal of the United States. The Latin phrase: Novus Ordo Seclorum translates to The New Secular Order. It dates back to our beginning as a republic.
