Obama: Fighting 'rise of privacy' (piracy): The Swamp

President Barack Obama is taking a stand against "the rise of privacy'' in the Indian Ocean.

Say what?

Obama at DOT.jpg

The president clearly meant the "rise of piracy,'' but his brief statement on the rescue of the American container ship captain held hostage by Somalian pirates came so quickly today that he didn't stop to correct himself. He did note, however, that those "who commit acts of piracy'' must be "held accountable'' for the crime.

Obama, calling the safety of the captain "our principal concern,'' started by saying that he is committed to fighting the "rise of privacy'' in the region.

Obama's few words on the situation, delivered in an economic-stimulus promoting event at the U.S. Department of Transportation today, marked his first public personal comments since Captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage Wednesday in the failed hijacking of the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean.

Navy SEALs rescued Phillips on Sunday with sniper rifles, killing the three remaining pirates aboard an unpowered lifeboat holding the Alabama's skipper hostae.

"His safety has been our principal concern,''' Obama said, "and I know this came as a welcome relief to his family and his crew.''

The president, who had spoken by telephone with the captain and his wife on Sunday, said his wife called the rescue the best Easter imaginable.

"I am very proud of the efforts of the U.S. military... I share our nation's admiration for Captain Phillips' courage and leadership and selfless concern for his crew,'' said Obama, echoing a written statement that the White House issued for him Sunday evening: "I want to be very clear, that we are resolved to halt the rise of privacy in that region... We are going to have to continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks.''

We'll hand one thing to the White House's stenographers, however. Whenever former President George W. Bush tripped over his own tongue, which happened with some frequency, the official transcripts proved true to the words.

And with Obama, less prone to the trip of the tongue, the same holds true in the transcripts.

This in now, from the White House:

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you, everybody. I hope everybody had a wonderful Easter. I just came from the Easter Egg Roll, and it was a spectacular -- spectacular outing. All the kids were out there having fun and it reminds us of why we do the work we do.

Before I discuss the purpose of my visit to the Department of Transportation today, I want to take a moment to say how pleased I am about the rescue of Captain Phillips and his safe return to the USS Boxer this weekend. (Applause.) His safety has been our principal concern, and I know this came as a welcome relief to his family and his crew.

I had a chance to talk to his wife yesterday and, as she put it, she couldn't imagine a better Easter than seeing his safe return. And I am very proud of the efforts of the U.S. military and many other departments and agencies that worked tirelessly to resolve this situation. I share our nation's admiration for Captain Phillips' courage and leadership and selfless concern for his crew.

And I want to be very clear that we are resolved to halt the rise of privacy [sic] in that region. And to achieve that goal we're going to have to continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks, we have to continue to be prepared to confront them when they arise, and we have to ensure that those who commit acts of piracy are held accountable for their crimes.''

Great. Now we have to be subjected to more incredibly stupid teleprompter cracks from the idiots on the right...

http://www.political-buzz.com/

Hmmmm Hmmmm..red meat.

Well if privateer is another word for pirate maybe Obama wasn't wrong?

I'd rather have a President who occasionally uses the wrong word than one who occasionally uses the right word.

It really doesn't matter-whatever the teleprompter tells him to say, he says.

Paulo

This should never have been a political issue. And for most red, white, and blue Americans it was about as non-partisan as it gets. But some nutballs on the fringe right (Limbaugh, Gingrich, Faux Noise) just couldn't help themselves: while armed terrorists were holding a brave, innocent American at gunpoint, a few right-wing lunatic fringe extremists elements were barely able to contain their glee at the thought of the terrorists winning, or at least for Phillips to remain captive or worse, all so that they could try and make the President look bad for a news cycle or two. What was for the rest of the nation a joyous Easter miracle has right-wing eliminationists furious. They’re angrily denouncing the details of the rescue, vainly trying to revise events to fit their failed ideology. It's revolting, beyond the pale, and something this nation will not soon forgive or soon forget.

I seriously hope that he does not say what ever is on the telepromter. Who is doing his thinking for him in that case?

It became a Political issue when an vessel sailing under the American flag was attacked by Somali fishermen/pirates/terrorists. And your opinion is pure Political activism. But it's your opinion.

Let's attack the right and stir up some BS. The Seals did a wonderful job, after they were cleared to kill these thugs.

It's revolting, beyond the pale, and something this nation will not soon forgive or soon forget.

Your post is a joke- no reasonable person was hoping the terrorists ( your words- they were not terrorists) would win..

As to Obama---
We elected a guy who has, other than his politcal campaigns, never led anything where he was personally reponsible for it's outcome - his MAIN REPONSIBILITY is his leadership of the US armed forces...his performance doing this will always, and should be political...

You apparently had already forgotten when the type of reponse you are referring to was the business as usual liberal criticism ....remember when nobody would publicly denounce the Betray -us ad run by the move on maniacs?

Next thing you know - congressmen might be calling our soldiers nazi's or viet cong for their "gulag" treatment of the poor kidnappers...were you critical of Dick Durbins masterful speech when he used this rhetoric?

Murtha accused our troops of "cold blooded " murder - before he knew any of the facts ... you or I would be facing a slander lawsuit if we had done this...

Or could you imagine if our senate leader would suddenly declare the "war on piracy" a loss and demand we bring the navy home ...Harry Reid has never backed down fro this stupid remark...

Many people perfomed extraordinarily here- Obama deserves credit- as he would also have been responsible if the navy had failed-

That idiot Bush would have invaded Somalia or something like that in a situation like this.

Hulk SMASH:

Obama needs no help looking incompetent.

Every good person was praying for a good outcome. Obama had very little to do with it. The military gave him a menu of options. He's so inexperienced that I'm sure most things are spoon-fed to him.

Big mistake electing a Marxist pantywaist who struts around Europe and then genuflects to his Muslim masters. What a disgrace he is! And what a bunch of traitors you who voted for the creep are!

Did not see the talk, speech.

This was not extemporaneous?
A teleprompter for this?

Finally, the press acknowledges an error on the part of Obama.

It's okay, we all make mistakes, misspeak. Obama gets a pass.

People are forgiving, it's when the press and Obama's thugs try to cover up flubs with lies.

It's when Obama treats the press like students, a classroom. "Come on, guys", Obama says, when reporters ask questions and he doesn't want to answer and the press backs off.

He treats the press with disdain, like he is a ruler, a god and that is not good.

The press shouldn't be any president's friend. They have a job to do. And the press have failed in the past few years to do their job.

There is a prejudice against the republicans by the press.

Shame on the press.

Perhaps the Wingnuts should have mailed teabags to the pirates. That'd show them!

As usual, your post is a bunch of B.S. That goes for the person on DailyKos from whom you copied your talking points.
.
I saw NOTHING in the sources you cited as hoping the President would fail in the hostage situation with the Somali pirates. Strangely, the person you copied your post from didn’t make the same accusation. Sure, some people on the right weren’t exactly confident that Obama would do the right thing. That’s not the same as saying that they hoped for a failure. They, too, were worried for Captain Phillips. In fact, I can’t think of anyone who didn’t rejoice at the end result. Even Sean Hannity gave props to President Obama for authorizing such decisive action in his radio show today.
.
If you want to criticize someone, at least you can criticize them truthfully. Your lies are despicable.

Has anybody ever asked this guy how to spell potato???

Hey Hulk SMASH....now that it fits your agenda...you use the word "terrorist." Remember...this administration doesn't want you to use that awful word! These guys were just teenage criminals, led by a sixteen year old wearing a Reebok Tee shirt and our president gave the order to shoot to kill. How about you liberals supporting our troops when they kill the real terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Hulk SMASH, I couldn't have said it better myself. Republicans really have become a bunch of sour-grapes, whiners and complainers with no new ideas.

Oh, isn't this just a grand Freudian slip of the tongue.

At least it would suggest the privacy issue ways heavy on the brother's mind.

Because, Obama knows that if he continues Bush's pillage of the 4th amendment - his precious Progressive base may not be there the next time around.

I see I've hit a nerve with all of the thug Wingnuts on here..ha ha ha! They hate it when they have their own words repeated back to them. I guess your de facto leader, Mullah Limbaugh, was "off message" then, huh?

Here, I'll let CONSERVATIVE blogger Ann Althouse fill you in on what you're lying about....I mean missing:
.
"I was listening to the beginning of the Rush Limbaugh show as I was cooking lunch this morning, and he was going on about the U.S. crew that was taken hostage by pirates off the cost of Somalia today. He'd slotted the story into his Obama-doesn't-know-what-to-do template and was riffing away about Obama's indecision and what he must be fretting about and how he'd probably want to apologize to the pirates and so forth. The big show was steaming along. (I thought a good ending would be: hostage crisis... it's Jimmy Carter all over again.)"

Fearing or, as was true of Limbaugh, anticipating failure isn’t the same thing as “hoping” for a failure, you dolt. You’re still the liar for claiming that Limbaugh or anyone else on the right hoped that the situation with the Captain and crew would be a failure.

I don't know who are the bigger liars - the GOoPer leadership or the GOoPer minions?

Before yesterday's remarkable success story on the high seas off the coast of Somalia, the right-wing blowhards were calling Obama "President Pantywaist". One of these blogs had the following classic line:

"Navy SEALs are certainly no pantywaists, but unfortunately their commander-in-chief is."

Hit a nerve? Lets see...Your posts don't make any sense and then you confuse criticism of your gaps in logic and lack of common sense as hitting a nerve? And then the best you can do is continue to post other peoples words to defend yourself?

Finish your jello and get back to the TV room before you miss your soap..

PrePuke,
HulkSMASH just handed you and your Wingnut pals your a*ses with your own "leaders" words....

Thanks for playing...:)

Here's a video summary of the various luminaries of the Republican lunatic fringe digging themselves into a hole that they're deadender foot soildiers (John W, heartburn etc) are having such a hard time digging themselves out of today:

Oh, great. Here’s JohnEEEE-boy showing up as “antacid” to lend support to his other alter ego HulkSMASH! We know who you are. You are the only poster here consistently as obnoxious as Bender the Robot. Can’t you ever be content with yourself?

While he probably meant to say 'piracy', the term he used is still correct. The word 'privacy' is just another word for piracy. Privacy is (alternatively) defined as 'an act committed by privateers (pirates).

I watched your DailyKos video, JohnEEE-Boy. There was still not a single word from any of the featured GOPers hoping for a failure on the ground. That, by itself, reaffirms what I said about you being a liar. Again, expressing doubts about the measures undertaken by the current administration has taken (or lack thereof) did NOT equal an expression of hope that the crisis would end in tragedy. You’re nothing better than a drone if you can’t tell the difference.

sdf: About the possibility that "privacy" might actually mean (something akin to) piracy, I thought about that too. I'm going to check the OED, if possible.

More proof that Republicans and their mouth-pieces were rooting for the pirates to defeat President Obama and America.

"Republican spokesman Brad Blakeman was on MSNBC this morning predicting that the U.S. Navy would fail in its mission to rescue Captain Phillips. Over at This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Newt Gingrich went on the attack against the Obama administration, betting against the U.S. Navy."

Unbelievable, how asinine some can be about a slip of the tongue. I suppose I should find it a good sign that this is all the sore losers can find to gripe about, even as I am perplexed by your very short memories. George W. Bush mangled the English language nearly every time he opened his mouth. Obama's slips don't even register on the "mangle scale" when we have such memorable gaffes as, "Is our children learning?", "I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family.", "They misunderestimated me.", or my personal favorite, "Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country." If President Obama ever starts uttering nonsense like that, I'll take seriously any criticism challenging his intelligence or his oratory skills.

The President's language is correct, though bordering on archaic. It's fascinating that he seems to have made the leap from "privateer" to "privacy"...as in "Piracy as a private, non-governmental attempt to convert commercial property on the open seas." Did he stretch? If so, there's nothing to do but follow. How refreshing after 8 years of ill-literate mangling...

I guess you don’t watch the videos yourself. Had you done so, rather than simply relied on a blogger from the rabid left, you would have found out that none of the named Republicans expressed a desire for a failure on the ground. Again, they simply expressed their doubts about how the matter was being handled. Go watch the video clip with George Will and Newt Gingrich in it, and then compare it with what said by the blogger you quoted.
.
Now, I realize that doubting your Lord and Savior, Barack Obama, is heresy in your opinion. You and a number of others seem to make the immediate leap in logic that doubting LAS Obama means a desire for failure altogether. That is not rational. Learn the difference.
.
To a small degree I take back what I said about you being a liar. Instead, I think you are pathologically addicted to believing whatever people in your “tribe” happen to say. This is why you engage in no apparent truth testing. As a result, you are lead around by the nose by those who would use you to disseminate their disinformation.

It is frightening how defensive Obama supporters become when we chip away at their god. So when Obama errors the left say, well Bush did worse...
Not the most compelling argument. But ok.

And when the left thinks Obama has done something wonderful they say... see look how incredible Obama is? He is like no one else. I guess it's a win win for them.

Big Deal. A typo on a teleprompter. The only stupid thing is the suggestion that "privacy" is also correct. Wrong!

Now, Obama just ordered to shoot 3 Somalian pirates who were between the ages of 17 and 19 years old. If Bush had done this, just imagine the accusation and cries of murder for killing three teen-agers. NO, Obama can't do wrong. See, how the big CNN and other leftist work. BUNCH of BIG HYPOCRITES!

@ Matt: "____ is the dumbest president in history. I can't believe we elected a moron like_____." Just change the name from Bush to Obama. Don't forget how the left acted just a few short months ago. Don't be a hypocrite.

Those of us whose reading goes beyond Dick, Dora and Spot the dog may realize that the President's use of the word privacy was not a slip but is the correct adjective to describe the acts of privateers.Privateers use privately owned armed vessels in the pursuit of acts of piracy. Take a moment to Look up acts of privacy on the high seas.

I didn't read all the comments... but hey don't gripe when the right points out Obama's misspeaks, the Left felt the need to invent a new word under Bush...Bushisms...and lets face it, both are intelligent men, both graduated from Harvard, both were able to rise to the office of President. These are not stupid men, however one thing to notice is that Obama's may not have been a misspoken word, it may have been a Freudian slip with everything else he is pushing to do with socialist propaganda...

The level of discussion and argument here exemplifies the lack of the general American public to properly articulate a position, and the lack of any genuine political awareness whatsoever. Left/right, liberal/conservative? Zzzz. You're neglecting the big picture by arguing about BS.

You know what? Whenever there is a well known person speaking, SOMEONE is going to say something about it. Might I remind everyone of 'nucular'?

Yes, so he goofed. I personally think it embarrassing for him. All the mistakes he makes and all the left-wingers back him up no matter what.

People will typically defend their side and ridicule the opposition. Is this really new?
