In the midst of a government-declared public health emergency involving "emerging cases'' of swine flu, President Barack Obama said today that he is closely monitoring a situation that poses no cause for alarm.
At the same time, the president said this morning in a planned address to the National Academy of Sciences, the obligation to cope with situations such as the outbreak of swine flu points to the need for a renewed commitment to an American investment in scientific research.
The president, citing the race to place an American on the moon in the 1960s as "the high-water mark'' of the U.S. commitment to scientific research, pledged today to commit at least 3 percent of the nation's Gross Domestic Product to research. "If there was ever a day that reminded us'' of the importance of that, he said, it is this day.
"We are closely monitoring the emerging cases of swine flu,'' Obama said, only briefly addressing an outbreak for which the federal government on Sunday declared a public health emergency. "This is obviously a cause for concern... but it is not a cause for alarm.
"I'm getting regular updates on the situation from the responsible agencies,'' the president said.
The Centers for Disease Control are providing regular updates on the situation, with at least 20 cases confirmed in the U.S., though none fatal. With more than 1,500 cases of swine flu reported in Mexico, more than 100 deaths have been attributed to the disease.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano also will be providing regular updates, the president said.
"One thing is clear,'' the president said. "Our capacity to deal with a public health challenge of this sort rests heavily on the work of our scientific community.
"This is one more example of why we cannot afford to let our nation fall behind,'' he said, and "that is exactly what's happening.''
The space race represented "the high water mark in national research and development,'' he said, but since then other nations have jumped ahead of the U.S. in their commitment to scientific education in the schools and their commitment to scientific research.
"It is not in our character, the American character, to follow,'' Obama said, delivering a "commitment'' today to invest at least 3 percent of the GDP to research. "It is our character to lead.''
The president struck a welcome chord when he spoke of his own commitment to science - following in the path of an administration, the Bush White House, which was widely criticized for allowing politics to interfere with science.
Obama has overturned a Bush executive order banning federal funding for research involving new lines of embryonic stem cell research, and his Environmental Protection Agency has moved swiftly to declare greenhouse gas emissions, seen as a contributor to global warming, a public health threat.
"Today, of course, we face more complex challenges than we have ever faced before,'' Obama said, pointing to " a medical system that holds the promise of opening new cures and treatments, against a health care system (that holds the potential of ) bankruptcy for families....
"At such a difficult moment, there are those who say we cannot afford to invest in science... I fundamentally disagree,'' said Obama, drawing applause from the academy as he called science more crucial "than it has ever been before.''

Mexico’s Flu Virus Underscores US Geosecurity Risk
www.dailyexception.com
While America focuses on Iraq and Afghanistan, this weekend’s flu outbreak highlights that events in Mexico may be the more enduring determinants in US national security over the longer term. Iraq will fade away over time, but the Mexican border won’t. The movement backwards and forwards of Mexicans and Americans across this shared frontier ensures linkages at a human level also. And with NAFTA, Mexico has become one of America’s biggest trading partners ensuring enormous ties at the economic level. The outbreak of Mexican swine flu is a global problem. But have no doubt that the country most at risk is the United States. Our common border ensures it. To deny this geography is dangerous. If the Mexican swine virus shows us anything, it reminds us that what happens over there matters over here.

Here's what I think about Obama and anything he says:
Mr. Obama:
I have had it with you and your administration, sir. Your conduct on
your recent trip overseas has convinced me that you are not an adequate representative of the United States of America collectively or of me
personally. You are so obsessed with appeasing the Europeans and the Muslim world that you have abdicated the responsibilities of the President of the United States of America. You are responsible to the citizens of
the United States. You are not responsible to the peoples of any other country on earth.
I personally resent that you go around the world apologizing for the United States telling Europeans that we are arrogant and do not care about their status in the world. Sir, what do you think the First World War and the Second World War were all about if not the consideration of the peoples of Europe? Are you brain dead? What do
you think the Marshall Plan was all about? Do you not
understand or know the history of the 20th century?
Where do you get off telling a Muslim country that the United States does not consider itself a Christian country? Have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States? This country was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the principles
governing this country, at least until you came along, come directly from this heritage. Do you not understand this?
Your bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia is an affront to
all Americans. Our President does not bow down to anyone, let alone the
king of Saudi Arabia. You don’t show Great Britain, our best and one of our oldest allies, the respect they deserve yet you bow down to
the king of Saudi Arabia. How dare you, sir! How dare
you! You can’t find the time to visit the graves of our greatest
generation because you don’t want to offend the Germans but make time to visit a
mosque in Turkey. You offended our dead and every veteran when you
give the Germans more respect than the people who saved the German
people from themselves. What’s the matter with you?
I am convinced that you and the members of your administration have the historical and intellectual depth of a mud puddle and should be ashamed of yourselves, all of you.
You are so self-righteously offended by the big bankers and the
American automobile manufacturers yet do nothing about the real
thieves in this situation, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie
Gorelic, the Fannie Mae bonuses, and the Freddie Mac bonuses. What do
you intend to do about them? Anything? I seriously doubt
it.What about the=2 0U.S. House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses
to their staff members – on top of the $2.5 million in automatic pay raises that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average
House aide got a 17% bonus. I took a 5% cut in my pay to save jobs with my
employer. You haven’t said anything about that. Who authorized that? I surely didn’t!
Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be receiving $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that's $45 million
more than the AIG bonuses. In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded $51 million – not a bad take. Who
authorized that and why haven’t you expressed your
outrage at this group who are largely responsible for the economic mess we have right
now.I resent that you take me and my fellow citizens as brain-dead and not caring about what you idiots do. We are watching what you are doing and we are getting increasingly fed up with all
of you. I also want
you to know that I personally find just about everything you do and say to be offensive to every one of my sensibilities. I promise you that I will work tirelessly to see that you do not get a chance to spend two terms destroying my beautiful
country and that includes your non-chalant attitude about this swine flu. If you had any decency as a man, much less a President, you would seal up every border to Mexico and never let ANYMORE in immediately - but NO, this is just another way of trying to
destroy our country. Your words are meaningless and worthless and of no merit to even listen to. You turn me off in every single regard.

Feel free to post your partisan rant, but at least be acurate. It seems only the rabid are increasingly getting fed up. Most Americans are willing to give him time. Your feeling of "increasing" anger is only fueled by the feeding frenzy of the ankle biters. 5 sharks in a feeding frenzy seems like 20.

Dear Mr. President:
Thank you for your support of scientific research. Of course we must be leaders and not followers in science.
Your thoughtful words regarding the so-called "swine flu" outbreak are welcome too.
More generally, however, I'd like to thank you for your balanced and respectful approach to matters domestic and international. It must be a terrible burden attempting to ameliorate the colossal messes of the Bush Administration. How quickly we people forget.
Take care and God bless you, sir.

Why is it that with every "crisis," the Obama sadministration seeks more government?
U.S. pharmacuetical companies already spend lots of money on research, but then Obama and his trial lawyer friends continually seek to sue them for every person who has an adverse reaction to every medication possible.

If this "Betty" actually had time to sit down and write what looks like a one to two page blurb on how she feels about how President Obama is handling different situations in the world and in our country, then obviously she has way too much time on her hands and has nothing better to do than to try and put down someone who was voted in to office by the majority of the American people. I just find it interesting that those people out there who are wanting Obama to fail seem to not care or realize that if he does fail we all fail. How could we put the blame of failure on one man if a high percentage of the American people were the ones that chose him to lead our country? Those who voted for him would be the ones to blame as well. After the job that Bush did to this country it will take more than one term to fix it, and Obama had stated that in his speeches numerous times. Obviously some people don't want it to take time. They want the country to be fixed right away, which is not realistic. If it took 8 years for this country to be in the shape that it is in because of Bush, then anyone with common sense would know that it will take just as much time, if not longer to fix it. If Obama fails as President then that will push this country back even further and it will take even longer for things to get back on track. People now can not afford that.
Posted by: Kristyn | April 27, 2009 11:41 AM
I think the "killer flu" story is overblow. The only people it killed are in Mexico, a place with far worse healthcare than in the U.S. No people in the U.S. have died, and there is nothing to indicate people are going to be dropping dead by the thousands.
Posted by: hmm | April 27, 2009 11:45 AM
Would Obama just be clear. We're not children. We understand that panicking is not helpful but I still need to know if this thing is serious or just a minor flu.
Posted by: JOE | April 27, 2009 11:57 AM
I personally think for the time that he has been in office he's handling different situations fairly well. This is just the beginning. The country may not see a drastic change for quite a while. People just have to learn to be patient, which I know is hard for some. I say, if people wanted a quick turnaround time to fixing this country, then why didn't they run for President and see if they could do it faster than Obama with all the mess he has on his plate left over from the Bush Administration.
Posted by: Kristyn | April 27, 2009 11:58 AM
Now how can Barry and Pelosi have the media spin this to be all Busgh's fault?
Posted by: BDD | April 27, 2009 12:00 PM
Betty, Show me one spot in the US Constitution that references "Judeo-Christian" ethics and principals. Find me one reference to God in that document at all.
What exactly is wrong with visiting a Mosque?
Your xenophobic, hyper nationalist, Christian-centric nonsense sickens me. Muslims-Americans are as American as you are. Most of them more so because they undertstand that this secular government and it's secular Constitution offers equality to all, regardless of religion.
Posted by: Salaam | April 27, 2009 12:02 PM
Yeah right Barry, this flu is spreading like wildfire.
This could potentially become a pandemic... My family has Cancun vacation scheduled for June, it looks like they might have to reschedule those plans at the rate this thing is spreading.
I agree we shouldnt panic but to say - 'Its no 'cause for alarm' is ignorant.

With 20 cases in the US you may wish to "get alarmed". I suggest you get an N95 health mask, wash your hands frequently, and don't touch your keyboard. There may be germs on it.

Betty, I love this reference right out of your heroes Rush and Sean about Obama visit with the Saudi King. Do you have any idea how uninformed listening to these political marketing guru’s. Betty, that’s all they are, they do not have your best interest in mind it’s their pocket books. Great American’s and Sean Hannity in the same sentence is the biggest oxymora.
First, do a quick history check how often did the Bush administration visit the Saudi King in the last couple of years; Cheney and Condi were over there begging him to increase oil supply and lower the cost per barrel.
Second, where do you get this idea the Constitution and Declaration of Independence was founded on “Judeo- Christian ethics and their principles governing this country.” You better go back to grade school because you flunked. They speak of God in the D of I, not that he or she is a Judeo – Christian.
Third, you referred to the Marshal Plan, again go do a little research and find out what party opposed the plan…drum roll please, yes the Republican Party was again promoting isolationist and limited government spending. Again, push yourself away from the TV and radio and go do a little research or you will again open mouth and insert foot.
Forth, better go back to who created this mess, it’s the very people I’m sure you voted into office. Betty, I could go on and on but I’m sure you’re a blog and run.

.
Well, well, well! Hope that made you feel better.
.
Not that I'd mention it (far be it from me!), BUT let me just mention that if you had posted that in the last administration, complaining about Bush, with a message that was similarly opinion/rumor-heavy and fact-lean, and as rhetorically angry as this message was, you would have had right-wingers coming from the rafters suggesting you loosen your tinfoil hat and take your displeased, venomous self to another country never to return if the current administration irked you so much. They'd have pointed out to you that speaking in such a disrespectful manner about the President of the United States of America was unpatriotic (after all, even if you disagree with the man, the office still should be getting your respect, shouldn't it?) and that your words were causing morale problems for the troops that are out there in Iraq and Afghanistan every day risking their lives for you. Perhaps words like this might be causing the death of one or more of our best fighting men. They'd have told you that there is NO place in this country for ignorant, rambling malcontents, and they'd have tried to shame you for your anger and un-American point of view.
.
Isn't it wonderful that we live in a country that accepts diverse viewpoints and allows you to disagree with its leadership in such a manner?
.
You have a BLESSED day! God is watching out for you!

The President says the swine flu outbreak is no cause for alarm, yet the U.S. government has declared a public health emergency on the basis of this flu.
Can we get our stories straight, D.C?
Posted by: SharonD | April 27, 2009 2:56 PM
In this case Betty you would be right. Far right-winged nut jobs would be coming out of the rafters regarding statements like the ones that were posted and would most likely make statements that you just made. And after reading what they would write I would just laugh at them because no one in this country is a true American and anyone who says they are are only fooling themselves. How can anyone be a true American if their ancestors came from different countries. Even if you were born in America it doesn't make you a pure blood American. Not unless you have Native American ancestory.
As far as the troops...they didn't ask to be there this long. Yes there are men and women who signed up for the services because they want to protect our country when called for, but there are also a number of men and women who signed up because they needed money to pay for college thinking that a war probably wasn't going to happen any time soon. Not to say they don't want to protect the country when called, but they factor in that they would get money for college if that is their wish. The troops understand that they have a job to do there and that there are people here who do support the them. There are quite a few here, though, that just do not support the war and the reasons why they're there. I support the troops 100%, but have never supported the war. Two wrongs don't make a right. And of course the government is not going to tell us 100% why we were attacked on 9/11. They always hide something and have us believe what they want us to believe. This war has gone on for so long I don't even know why were are there any more. The reasons kept changing over the past 6-7 years.
I do believe that it is wonderful that we live in a country that accepts diverse viewpoints and allows you to disagree with its leadership in such a manner (whether you're being sarcastic or not). Not everyone agrees with who we have in office because no one is perfect, but to already pass judgement on a man who has not been in office that long is telling me that that person is ignorant and impatient. You can't fix a problem this big in three months. Like I said, if that persons feels they could do a better job than Obama in the same amount of time that he has been in office with the problems he has to fix, then maybe they should of run. Don't criticize a man for the job he's doing if you're not in his position and don't fully understand the pressure he's under.

I can clearly see from the wacko posts here that once again. All Bush's fault.
Believe me both sides love it when we bicker and blame-storm while they rob us blind and trample our rights.
All you wing nuts need to chill and demand more honesty and integrity from your representatives. Even after the campaign.
