As if the critics of the president who like to talk about his TelePrompTer didn't have enough fuel for their fire, Politico.com has pulled a clip from the president's address to the National Academy of Sciences this week.
The one in which the president got ahead of his TelePrompTer for a moment. (The snarky folks at the Barack Obama's TelePrompTer blog who write as if they are actually TOTUS -- "TelePrompTer of the United States" -- might have some fun with this moment.)
"I jumped the gun,'' said Obama, waiting for the machine to catch up with him so that he could continue an important address about making a decades-long commitment to scientific research, pledging 3 percent of the GDP for scientific research.
They might use some of that change for a new TelePrompTer while they're at it. Or turn up the speed. And if you'd like to know what the president actually said at the Academy, here's a more complete look, PrompTed:

Ahhh...more chum in the water. The feeding frenzy will smell it no doubt, but once again only they will circle for the kill.

Let's see if anyone actually discusses the message of the speech rather how the person delevered the speech.

Bill -you are a prime example of someone who has bought into the hype -
--
Obama has been hyped as the smart guy, the professor with extraordinary rhetorical abilities..aren't you the least bit disappointed that Obama, with is self- annointed "gift" rarely finds a way to communicate effectively without the use of a teleprompter?
I meet with large and small groups all of the time- I make extended presentations of compex issues and am able to do this with notes and -here's a thought- knowledge of my subject matter. Am I really that much more talented than Obama? Probably not- but I do respect my audience enough to not read to them.
-
How engaged can he be that he requires to have the words fed to him - ?
Obama supporters, like yourself, want to make this type of criticism appear superficial because you know how much this hits home the fact that Obama really brings nothing more to the office than his media created charisma and image...
---
Do you remember the , [your words], "feeding frenzy " when there was a suspicion of Bush wearing an earpiece ...? Followed up with nonsensical media reports of conspiracy theories that Cheney was talking in his ear.
--
The only difference here is that Obama knows that he will have unquestioned loyalty from folks like you and his moon eyed media supporters that will never call out the irony of the rhetorical, gifted genius of an orator like Obama being fed his words to him electronically by god knows who..

Heartburn, don't sugar coat it.
Show us how much you really love the new Prez.
But thanks for bringing up that photo of Bush in the debate with Kerry. Clearly there was a "black box" under his suit jacket which probably was a prompting device.
Obama is fully capable of delivering a great speech without a teleprompter.
The first great speech that gained him widespread recognition was---no, not the July 04 one at the Convention.
The one in October 2002 from Daley Plaza against the impending Iraq War.
WBEZ broadcast that one. And it brought Obama to the attention of a lot of people big time.
I can imagine people who tuned in in the middle of the speech, wondering
"Who IS that guy???"
Much as people who tune into A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION for the first time think "Who IS that guy????" the first time they hear Garrison Keilor on the air. (To this day, he is never identified by name during the broadcast, I believe.)
They didn't provide TeleprompTers at Daley Plaza in Oct. 2002 for anti-war speakers.
I will guarantee you that.

I could care less whether he uses a teleprompter. Of course, I'm not the world renonwed public speaker heartburn is, and I'm sure heartburn's brilliance and genius far outshines a know nothing Harvard Law gfrad like Obama, let alone simlpe little me. But it seems to me, that when you are President of the United States, and the world is hanging on the meaning of your every word, that more preparation and care must be taken to ensure that the speech text is delivered as intended, than would be required for speaking to a small group . Of course, I'm sure that someone of heartburn's great achievments on the world stage would know differently. I'm sure that heartburn could give major Presidential address from memory multiple times a week without any error. He is trully that brilliant, people. We need him to be our leader, not that slacker Obama. Brilliant, eloquent, flawless, humble. heartburn 2012!

and will have ankle biting pundits that can't quite get the fact that whether he reads from a prompter, notes, or winging it, people just don't care. They care about what he is doing and please.....after 8 years of Bushisms, whatever mistakes have been made it is a breath of fresh air. Check out the latest GOP favorability polls if you wish to see how much people care about that silly nonsense. Running neck and neck with hemorrhoids is nothing to brag about. Where are the numbers of people flocking to the GOP because Obama uses a prompter? I know I know...they're all under a spell. Super....maybe you can use that ol' "I,m made of rubber, you,re made of glue" argument next.

Here is one other thing the prompter says today. Specter to change parties. I guess the right will chase the other 2 who voted for stimulus to the other side also. Foot...loaded gun....FIRE!

heartburn, are you aware that for significant Presidential speeches, copies of the text to be spoken are provided to the Press and others prior to the event? Are you aware that any deviation from the provided text is usually noted and analyzed by the Press and others? Are you aware that this has been the practice for many years? Are you aware that NO recent President, including your Blessed Hero George W. Bush, gives major speeches off the cuff, rather than from a carefully prepared text? Are you aware that the admittedly silly earpiece incident was at a election debate, not at a speech?
Are you aware of all those things, and chose to ignore them to attack Obama, or are you just ignorant?

Here is some other news from the teleprompter....Murphy wins over Tedisco. Do you get the feeling that GOP comeback is a myth? Duh!

Somehow methinks that if this was Bush, Silva would be having a cow over Bush and his TelePrompter. The thing is, though, is that Obama hasn't a clue until his TelePrompter tells him.

Clinton's Big Deal: stains on a blue dress.
Bush's Big Deal: 4,200 US soldiers dead in a war based on false premises.
Obama's Big Deal: He uses a teleprompter just like Bush did except he is much better at it.

Lou-
So if Obama's speeches are no different than any other prez speeches where is this "gift" he is taking credit for?

"I could care less whether he uses a teleprompter..."

You probably couldn't care less if he read the phone book either... as long as he finds a way to say change, hope, or I inherited [ fill in the blank]
Posted by: heartburn | April 28, 2009 2:29 PM
Figures.....not one poster here addressed the message.
Posted by: kg123 | April 28, 2009 3:05 PM
heartburn, he's talking about his gift for A. Writing fine rhetoric (and he freely admits he has help from speechwriters), and B. presenting said fine rhetoric.
You really didn't think Obama was doing anything new with the teleprompter did you, heartburn? You can't possibly have been that misinformed to think that Bush and every other recent President were just speaking off the top of their heads, are you?
Posted by: Lou | April 28, 2009 3:25 PM
He the "magnificent orator" couldn't even use the word TelePrompTer. He is stuck without it.
Posted by: PG | April 28, 2009 4:47 PM
hertburn and john d,
You make a ridiculous argument. When it is a "speech", ALL people (not just politicians) will read from notes, written paper, teleprompter, etc. So this is a non-issue here.
Noone memorizes a speech. Look back at some of the old SOTU addresses. Aren't they always peeking down at the written speech? Or, with modern technology, a telepromter.
Obama is the first president who "grew up" with this technology.
Now, go ahead and continue with your false "Cyrano De Bergerac" (since your nazi parents had you burn all literature I can explain this reference if you like) claims when he is at a press conference. But the arguments against using a teleprompter for a speech are just silly.

As a Brit, I really fail to understand why your politicians NEED an earpiece when necessary! So they make a blooper when saying something. Big deal. Anyone else on here totally unable to say something without "remote assistance" apart from your politicians?
