The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, filling out his tax returns this weekend, called on Americans today to think about where all their money is going.

"The average American has to work from January 1st until this Monday, April 13th just to earn enough money to pay all their taxes for the year - that's just two days before taxes are actually due, on April 15th,'' the Republican governor said in his party's response to the president's weekly address.

"And then consider this: If the Democrat majority in Washington gets its way, most families' tax burdens will be even higher,'' Pawlenty said. .

"Isn't it time we stopped working for the government and that government started working for us?'' asked Pawlenty, who is viewed within his party as a potential candidate for national office down the road.

"Here's a novel idea for the federal government: instead of collecting more taxes and then redistributing them through more federal programs, why don't you just let us keep more of our money in the first place?

See the address above and read it below:

This is the text of the governor's address:

"Hi, I'm Tim Pawlenty, governor of Minnesota.

"This weekend, my wife Mary and I are finishing up our tax returns - just like I'm sure many of you are.

"It's a time when a lot of us look at our family's finances and ask some pretty tough questions, like are we saving enough for our kids' college? Will we be able to retire at a normal age? And what might happen if the recession gets worse, like it has over the last 2 months, when over 1 million Americans lost their jobs?

"I know for a lot of folks, the answer to these questions are pretty grim these days. Nationwide, unemployment is at a 25-year high as companies lay off employees or go out of business altogether. It's at times like this when families - and businesses - feel a need to hold on to every dollar they can.

"But think about this: according to the non-partisan Tax Foundation, the average American has to work from January 1st until this Monday, April 13th just to earn enough money to pay all their taxes for the year - that's just two days before taxes are actually due, on April 15th.

"And then consider this: If the Democrat majority in Washington gets its way, most family's tax burdens will be even higher.

"Now this isn't a Republican versus Democrat debate. I thought President Obama's proposal to eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses was a pretty good idea. And his pledge to lower taxes for middle class Americans was something Republicans whole heartedly supported.

"But the budget that Congress is considering doesn't provide that tax relief. And rather than eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses immediately so they can create jobs right now, their budget keeps those taxes high until after President Obama's term in office. And most concerning, this budget creates mountains of new debt that will ultimately will require higher taxes on all of us and our children.

"I think that's wrong. Families are hurting now and small businesses can't create new jobs soon enough.

"Isn't it time we stopped working for the government and that government started working for us?

"Here's a novel idea for the federal government: instead of collecting more taxes and then redistributing them through more federal programs, why don't you just let us keep more of our money in the first place?

"The federal government should keep a lid on taxes, control government spending, and borrow less - rather than increase the size and scope of the federal government so much that Washington is guaranteeing future tax increases. And while they're at it, they should also focus on making government work better, not making it bigger.

"It's time to prioritize spending, cut taxes to help families pay their bills and stimulate job creation. And let's get control of our national debt, so future generations aren't burdened with unbearable taxes.

"I urge President Obama and the Democrat-led Congress to let hardworking American families keep more of what they earn by cutting taxes and reining in spending. It's just common sense.

"I'm sure you will agree, especially on April 15th when your taxes are due.

"Thank you for listening and have a blessed Passover and Easter."

The War and Occupation of Iraq and the Con on Wall Street, broke the bank, not to mention the great bank robbers, the Bankers !! Quit trying to fool the people, again !! They know the Bush-Cheney-Republican axis tried to destroy America. Those are the real unAmericans !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I would like to see a break down in how taxes are paid according to political affiliation.....in other words..what percentage of Democrats actually pay taxes..and what percentage of Republicans pay taxes? My guess would be Republican = 90-100% Democrats = 15-20%

"Here's a novel idea for the federal government: instead of collecting more taxes and then redistributing them through more federal programs, why don't you just let us keep more of our money in the first place?"

I sure hope Pawlenty gave "credit" to GWB for this quote. Tim, you is 8 years late with this plan that allowed American Tax Payer to betray President Bush these last 7 years.

For the last 7 years, we have let the "taxpayers" keep more of their money, and the taxpayers have FAILED. Good ol George let them keep more of their "money( especially the RICH), and the only thing that happened was the rich got richer, the poor had more babies,, and we have a "FREE MARKET" in economical downfall.

So everybody, quit blaming President Bush for our economic problems and realize that it was YOUR fault, the American Tax Payers, who we let keep more of their money for the last 8 years. The tax payer has failed it's obligation to be better spenders, and our country, and especially George W. Bush, have suffered the consequences.

Tim, this is a failed policy, and poor President Bush has had to suffer the results of his misjudged faith in the American TaxPayer. This betrayal by the American taxpayer might be, is probably the only mistake George made the last 8 years; I know GWB can't think of any.

Joe:

Just how do you think the Democrats get away without paying any taxes? What about everyone else? Why do people like you keep dividing the US as only two parties? There are many of us who think it is ridiculous to be affiliated to a party and only think what the party elite tell us to and repeat their talking points as truth.

lochnessmonster...My apologies...I forgot about the 3% of people like you who claim to be independent or third party and waste your vote every election. Remember....35% of our wage earners in this country pay NO federal taxes...I will guarantee you they all vote for Democrats because Democrat politicians keep promising them FREE benefits. Obama is trying to increase the 35% to closer to 50%. That way...Democrats will continue to get re-elected. And who pays for it....hard working REPUBLICANS!!!!!

FITZ and his lack of understanding of economics - the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have not broken the bank in this country. WW2 didn't break the bank in this country.
.
What is braking the bank in this country is Social Security, Medicare, Perscription Drug program - gov't programs that go on forever will break the bank in this country.
.
Where George Bush and the GOP Congress failed is implementing large gov't programs - specifically perscption drug coverage - that will add to the financial burden in the country. More taxes will be neeeded to support this and that means less capital available to grow the economy.

Obama's taxes will cause everyone to suffer.

People will not be happy. The eight dollars stimulus people got will not make up the difference when taxes are implemented.

Tired of federal programs that don't work and the government still keeps in place. Let me keep my money. Stop the picking of my pocket.

Studied, worked, did without and achieved a good life. Don't want that ethic to be dissolved by the Obama administration.

Thanks governor, don't mind if I do give it some thought, now that my calculator has run out of batteries and my ink cartridge is out of toner over my taxes.

Hmm, under the GOP, my taxes went to an ill-advised, never-ending war in Iraq. Not to mention its contractors like Halliburton and Blackwater. Oh, and let's not forget lining the pockets of the dictators we were "allied" with in Iraq and Afghanistan who've been SO helpful. And Gitmo, we don't want to forget that tithe. Domestically, I want to pay for all those unused FEMA trailers and the melted ice. And let's not forget to send W before every imaginable military audience who's likely to clap under orders to do so. And that's just the start. (Fox News was on the government dole, no?)

So yeah governor, I've thought about how the GOP has f****d up this once great land, where every kid had an American dream, and I look forward to the day when my 1040 can put you wankers out of business.

"And then consider this: If the Democrat majority in Washington gets its way, most families' tax burdens will be even higher,'' Pawlenty said.

Oh...so the top 1% of taxpayers are "most families" now? Letting the Bush tax cuts expire will affect the top 1% of taxpayers, and only minimally affect the middle class.

Pawlenty takes his "facts" from Sean Hannity.

The kind of improving economic news that we've been getting lately HAS to be making the deadender Wingnuts (Pawlenty) heads explode. They were hoping for President Obama and America to fail !!

Hey Wingnuts, if returning to the same tax policies for the rich that existed before Bush is the thing that's got a bee in your bonnet, claiming the end of the republic is at hand -- go for it. If you've suddenly decided that preventing government efforts to stave off a second Great Depression is the thing you're going to hang your collective hats on, or that saving one of the prime manufacturing sectors still left in the country is a bridge too far, by all means protest. Who's stopping you? Who's intimidating you?

On the contrary, the rest of us find your crying and wailing to be not only funny but also superbly instructive. It's increasing taxes on the rich that gets your goat, and absolutely nothing else. The only Constitutional crisis possible is one that might possibly affect your wallet; offenses to other people's freedoms don't rouse a tenth of the same emotion from you deadender nutjobs.

And it stands as a dramatic act of solidarity with conservative leaders in government. Bloviate at every opportunity; remain steadfastly in opposition to everything; suggest nothing; claim that it is not even your responsibility to suggest anything. Like House and Senate Limbaugh Republicans, who have declared sitting on their hands to be an act of supreme virtue and who, when pressed, can only come up with a few terse pages of declarations that the only path forward is to give big businesses more tax breaks, and rich Americans more tax breaks, and eliminate even more regulations on financial behavior -- and that will work this time for sure, in spite of those same exact things bringing the country debt and corruption every other time they have been tried, finally leading to this current brink of economic ruin. No, it seems hard to compete with any acts of leadership as impressive as that.....NOT!

Where does he think his salary comes from? Maybe he should be governor for free seeing he doesn't like taxes. I'm sure the people of Minnesota could use his salary for something else.

Athena,
.
BO has already broken his promise on approx 20% of those making under $250K by raising the tax on smokes.
.
Freeper,
.
Its taxing the job creators that gets my goat. It's punishing success that gets my goat. Its taking away freedom and liberty that gets my goat. But we all know what you folks do with goats or is that sheep?

There would be money for Social Security if the Congress didn't SPEND the extra Social Security funds that come in monthly on OTHER THINGS.

Congress failed to save the excess money for future generations. They didn't SAVE, they spent which is what too many other people do in this country. Spend, instead of save.

Was it Clinton, who balanced the budget with the excess Social Security funds?

And we want to give MORE money to Congress to spend on other things.

If Congress saved instead of spent money maybe this country would be in better shape.

NO MORE TAXES.

Shame on Congress and BOTH parties.

And watch out for AARP, that's a fake Obama organization, now. They are going in a different direction on not focusing on 55 and older. Now, with the new CEO, AARP has a "different" agenda. Request a refund of your dues.

Don't contribute. Your money goes to the democrat propaganda machine.

.
Were you referring to the way in which Democrats “bloviated,” opposed regulation, and denied any trouble with GSE’s and the housing market despite White House and Congressional Republican warnings in 2001, 2003 and 2005? Or are you just being a foolhardy ideologue, oblivious to historical fact?
.
You know, when a politician runs on a platform of small government and fiscal responsibility like many (but not all) Republicans have, it then behooves them to oppose the big government, big spending, Big Brother ways of the Democrats now in power. As I see it, it is a good and sufficient start that the Republicans are protesting that Democrats are taking us down the wrong path. In choosing which branch of the river to navigate, it is first important not to take the branch which sends the ship of state over the falls. Unsustainable spending is unsustainable spending regardless of whether Democrats or Republicans do it. That you somehow think it is better because the money is being applied to objects favored by Democrats is pure insanity.
.
And, no, it’s not just tax breaks that Republicans are looking for. They are looking for less spending and more freedom. Tax breaks aren’t feasible even for the middle class without a reduction in government spending. It is only by reference to fuzzy math concerning the reversal of the “Bush tax cut” and, perhaps, our exit from Iraq that Democrat mythology seems to perpetuate the falsehood that we can pay for all of this stuff simply by raising taxes on the rich. That dog don’t hunt.

Joe is out of his mind.

We are living in GWB's and the Republicans tax world.

No new tax bill has passed congress.

"Here's a novel idea for the federal government: instead of collecting more taxes and then redistributing them through more federal programs, why don't you just let us keep more of our money in the first place?"

Typical Republican pol: stupid if he's serious; pandering if he's not.

Doogie,
.
Let's just give all the money to Doogie and let him decide what's best for us.
