We heard something this morning that we don't often hear in Washington:
An apology.
After the Department of Homeland Security issued an assessment of the risk of right-wing extremism growing in the nation's current economic and political environment - citing the potential recruitment of "military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities'' among the factors - the House's Republican leader, John Boehner of Ohio, demanded an apology to veterans.
Janet Napolitano, secretary of Homeland Security, offered one today. The agency's assessment, she said in an interview from Mexico City aired by CNN this morning, is just that: "an assessment, not an accusation.'' She noted that the leader of the Veterans of Foreign Wars had said as much in her agency's defense.
Yet, the secretary allowed that some may have been offended.
"I apologize for that offense,'' she said. "It was certainly not intended.''
In the lineup of morning interviews from Mexico City, where she is joining the president today, Napolitano also told MSNBC that there is a lot of "spin'' coming out of Washington on this fairly, in her view, routine report (see the video above).
The report issued April 9 and circulated to local and state law enforcement authorities pointed to an environment conducive to acts of right-wing extremism -- while citing no known specific threats of violence. Among those factors: "the economic downturn and the election of the first African American president,'' the state of the economy and illegal immigration. Add to all that the return of military veterans having trouble "reintegrating into their communities.'' With all of this, the report said, terrorist groups or "lone-wolf extremists'' could be newly motivated.
"To characterize men and women returning home after defending our country as potential terrorists is offensive and unacceptable.'' Boehner said in a statement his office issued yesterday. "The Department of Homeland Security owes our veterans an apology.
""Furthermore,'' Rep. Boehner said, "the secretary of Homeland Security owes the American people an explanation for why she has abandoned using the term 'terrorist' to describe those, such as al Qaeda, who are plotting overseas to kill innocent Americans, while her own department is using the same term to describe American citizens who disagree with the direction Washington Democrats are taking our nation.''
Napolitano maintains that her agency is not monitoring ideas, and not warning anyone about any political ideologies. Rather, it is on the lookout for actual threats to homeland security, and that includes violence by extremists.
The leader of the VFW came to Homeland's defense, calling the report "a threat assessment, not accusation.'' It could have been "worded differently,'' the VFW leader said of the Homeland note of military veterans reengaging in society, but:
"A government that does not assess internal and external security threats would be negligent of a critical public responsibility," said Glen M. Gardner Jr., national commander of the 2.2 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.
The report cites "disgruntled military veterans as being possible security threats, either by acting as lone wolves or as being targeted for recruitment into rightwing extremist groups who are hate-oriented (religious, racial or ethnic), or driven by domestic issues ranging from the economy and gun control to illegal immigration and abortion, among others,'' the veterans note.
"The report proves that DHS is doing its job, and that's to protect America and Americans," said Gardner, a Vietnam veteran of the Marine Corps from Round Rock, Texas. "The report should have been worded differently, but it made no blanket accusation that every soldier was capable of being a traitor like Benedict Arnold, or every veteran could be a lone wolf, homegrown terrorist like Timothy McVeigh. It was just an assessment about possibilities that could take place.
"That's how successful military campaigns are waged, and that's exactly how our nation must be protected,'' he said. "You try to plan for every possible wildcard scenario, and then you adjust your plans accordingly."
At the same time, the VFW suggests that Homeland keep its eyes open for others who have had paramilitary training, including police, the Secret Service, FBI, and DHS's own Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

It was the right thing to do. 98% of the veterans that return from the wars, we ask them to fight, are able to go ahead, with their lives. Many need help in making the adjustment back to civilian life. Unfortunately, for generations, now, the veterans have been getting the short end of the stick, none, or very little help, with combat-related problems !! Secretary Napolitano was correct in apologizing for her department's misstatement, but that shouldn't stop our government from watching those elements, in our own country, such as the McVeighs or Nichols. We never want a repeat of the devastation that McVeigh visited upon the people of Oklahoma, and America !! That is why, it is critical for President Obama, to continue his funding of the Department of Veterans Affairs, to the tune of 30 Billion Dollars, for our veterans, in the next 5 years. That is putting your money where your mouth is !! Give our veterans, all the help they need, to return to society and be productive !! They gave us, all they had, when they were serving in our fine Armed Forces, the least we can do for them, is to help them, to get back to their life, after their tours !!
Thank you, to our women and men of our Armed Forces !
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Well at first I was very offended by the remarks that indicate I am a right wing extremist because I don't agree with Washington. Yesterday i attended a local Tea Party and as one of the speakers mentioned that we are being labeled Extremist, I came to the conclusion that I am proud to wear that label. People who were considered Extremist created this great nation that most of us enjoy. It may require some more to straighten it out. We need to Flush The Toilet Bowl that Washington Has become. Democrat, Republican, Independent, Liberal, Conservative. THEY NEED TO GO. And the biggest enemy of the people of this nation is "Big Media" when the citizens are given the whole truth, as a group they will come up with the right decision. CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC HNN and many others are desperately trying to cover up the truth about the unrest in this nation. If it weren’t for their lies and bias we would not have the need to rise up now. People, Speak OUT. Now is the time to be heard. WASHINGTON YOU HAVE LOST YOUR WAY AND WE INTEND TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR WAY HOME.

Oh Joe...you are such a legend in your own mind. My guess? You squeak out a mere 30-38K a year at best. You more than likely have seen a tax break from the Obama administration. You go to church on Sunday, then come home and break probably 5 of your Ten Commandments. Son....you couldn't afford to support me. I spend more on property tax than you make. My boat probably cost more than your home. So don't look down your nose at me piss ant. You want an apology? I'm sorry your party was ever in power long enough to create this crisis.

"EXTREMISM"?! REALLY??
Does that mean there are those who oppose our govt's current existing "extreme" liberal, socialist views of OUR beloved USA, long rooted in freedom of individual thought, words & expression?
Its all relative to "others"...usually those in power, insecure & intolerant.
Our God-fearing & inspired founders were "extremists" to King Henry and Britain!
Thats exactly how & why America was created "FREE" for individuals to exercise their God-given individual choices.
I submit that vets love their country and traditions most, while the real extremistists are now "in charge", running the asylum they have created.
Add me to the "extremist" list of fervent judeo-christian(non-secular), pro-life, pro-freedom, pro-constitution, anti-socialists who do not trust our present government, policies, and top people, and wish to see a change ASAP, for love of my country, culture & kids.

In the rush to get the Homeland Security paper out to the media BEFORE the tea parties, was a sloppy job.
The Homeland paper,
linking catholics and veterans to be possible candidates for terrorist recruitment is crazy; more so when we in this country have been told that there are FOREIGN AGITATORS AND TERRORISTS IN THIS COUNTRY.
Guess, blacks were terrorists and anti-government, when they protested.
The net result for the issued papers and the coverage by the media, is a population acutely aware of the biased "reporting" and a department in the government that wantonly labels groups.
Beware America, beware. Time to elect people at all levels (local-mayors, councilpeople, state-reps, senators, governors) who promote freedom.
And watch the media-tv and radio, print. Sieve the information. It is purposely biased.
Totally, disappointed with Napolitano and the orchestrated release of these papers.
And now, can't put my faith in what comes out of Napolitan's mouth.
Who can believe them, now?
There is doubt.

Not defending DHS or Napolitano - this was definitely a political blunder. But we really seem to struggle facing harsh truths in this country. Whether we care to acknowledge it or not, the majority of our armed forces are recruited from low income areas where joining the military is one of the few avenues out of a life of relative poverty. Many of these kids wouldn't have the opportunity to assimilate into mainstream middle class America if they hadn't joined the military. Tack on PTSD, mistrust and resentment toward our government, and a woefully inept Veterans Administration and you have a very fertile ground for extremist recruitment. Unfortunately, many of these veterans will slip between the cracks of society and fall prey to extremist propaganda because as much as we love to tie yellow ribbons around our trees and wave our little flags, most U.S. citizens largely ignore the plight of veterans once they come home.
Democrats may be enjoying the absence of leadership in the GOP right now. But it only serves to create a deeper perception that there is no alternative to the party that is in power. And that is how we start down the road to REAL civil unrest - not a bunch of dopey white folks holding Tea Parties.

Hey Bill, don't forget, we're not supposed to own businesses nor have education either. Problem with Joe is, is that he does not know the truth nor statistics. Joe, in at least this last election, the vast majority of college grads voted democrat. Pugs have become the backwater of this country. You pugs are a bunch of intellectual addolescents.....you found a little bit of wood but you still don't know how to use it yet.
Bill, coming to QC was successful, but don't cross the border with a big F-250 truck and say you are going on a 3 month vacation. On the second day, the finally believed me that I was coming here for love and not work. I had to divulge my real estate information, my bank account balances, my current utility bills, and a few other hoops to jump so as to assure them of my return!! They also looked over the website www.showchair.com to verify some stuff.
I'm glad to see !nky is still not making any sense here either!! Oh, it's like my home away from home.

@bill r. I see you think because you are wealthy it gives you the right to insult and denigrate a person like Joe. You estimate how much Joe makes, how many commandments he breaks and that your boat is worth more than Joe’s home. After reading your post I’d like to make some assumptions about you, Son.
You probably acquired your wealth through nefarious means. Your insulting rant leads me to believe you didn’t go too far in school and if you did you probable cheated. Lastly, I bet no one ever told you your boat and your philosophy are both leaky

@ bill r . Name calling from the right or left is toxic to reasonable discourse. Republicans abandoned fiscal responsibility and smaller government and they paid the price at the polls. Other than providing for the national defense through the armed forces I don’t think the federal government is a very competent institution. If the increase of the federal government improves our collective situation I will be proven wrong and the Democrats will retain their power for generations. I do think that DHS is a poster child for the federal approach to problem solving. A gigantic agency instituted by the Republicans, perpetuated by the Democrats, paid for by the taxpayers, and duplicating efforts by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies which will be funded and remain in existence forever.
Posted by: Bushwacker | April 16, 2009 2:42 PM

You are a immature, narrow-minded and frustrated little person. If you folks don't like this government or this administration, leave the country. Move to China or Iceland or Peru or somewhere. She is a Traitor to the nations constitution I say.

Napolitano screwed up, knows it, and now has egg on her face. Turn the page. One thing I think liberals and conservatives can or should agree on is respect for veterans. I know this because for the first time I can say I completely agree with Don Fitz. Not to say that threats should ever be ignored. There are nuts in every segment of society, veterans included. Couple that with the fact that with their military training, if a veteran loses it, they are capable of inflicting quite a bit of damage. With an angry Herbie you might get a trampled flowerbed. An angry McVeigh can devastate. Still, I think veterans are owed a heightened respect, should not be singled out as a dangerous element of society, and should be kept from falling through the cracks when some come home with psych issues. Vets risked everything for their country. They deserve our respect, and I highly doubt Napolitano will need to be reminded again. Oh, and pretty classy move from Gardner. He could have tee'd off on Napolitano
but took the high road.

Here was FITZ's statement on thw SWAMP two days ago:
"Where were these big-mouth, moronic Republicans when their Moron-in Chief was spying on Americans, torturing captives and throwing our tax dollars down that black hole, known as Iraq !!? Where were they when their incompetent leaders, the draft-dodgers, Bush and Cheney, were lying to America about WMD ? Where were they !!? They were defending the morons !! Now we have an Agency, that will be protecting us from the possible threat of other McVeighs and we have some that are against the idea. What is going on there ? I don't think they want to see another federal building blown to bits, by a whacked American !! I, sure in the heck, hope that is the case !! I think these Republicans better get back to civics class and find out what a good citizen is !! It sure isn't hoping and praying that our President and our country, fail !! Nor is it, lying about our President and our Congress, just to serve their sick agenda !! The Republican Party, that of the WMD, have really sunk, to new lows !!! I hope they are happy, with the climate they are creating. It stinks and so do they !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW."
I missed the part of him being critical of ol' Janet on that.
Why weren't you supporting the troops two days ago?
FITZ doesn't think for himself, he just parrots what BO and his cronies say.

Mark Silva and the Secretary of DHS surely have folks riled up here. I hope that there may be some write-up, slanted Left-leaning probably, with respect to the fine observations that you have noted here. A few corrections, however, are in order:
1. We are not angry. More a feeling of futility, distrust, and why do we need to wreck our entire economic system in this manner. Strange Days ARE surely upon us.
2. Jimmy Carter owns treason. Rick Perry, the Tx Governor, is not treasonous. He, like me, is beginning to see a clearer, more promising future for Texas, a reformed Republic, than Tx, chattel state of the new socialist Amerika.
3. Right wing dictatorship ~ we don't get all carried away with the hero worship thing. Dictators absolutely would never work for us, right wing, left wing, or chicken wing. Liberals would never understand this. Rick Perry did not get re-elected by any huge majority. He has finally caught favorable wind on this issue, however.
4. We have considerable resources and people that are in general, willing to work hard, if they are allowed to, to develop them as necessary. It is increasingly difficult for us to see how or what we would ever need most of you committed Blue states for. I personally hope that we will have a trade agreement with Corona Ca, and Nazareth Pa. I may have to hold out for that.
5. Here's the best part, Naphthenic Tx Lube Oils - 7500 $ American per quart, retail only. No credit. We probably will need to have our own currency. I am sorry, President Lincoln, but in your infinite wisdom you could never have seen this coming. Thanks J. Davis for your fine observations.

That bombing was a single event, staged almost 14 years ago- hasn't Al Qaida staged hundreds of attacks on US interests since then? Why so little mention of them since she was appointed three months ago- isn't keeping a lid on those medieval savages 80% of her job description? Isn't that why the Department of Homeland Security created in the first-place?
Apparently there is no bounds to what government assets Obama will prostitute for his own purposes... while neglecting daunting, actual threats in the meantime.
So all who wondered why Obama chose this obedient toady to head Homeland Security now have their answer: a serious choice who would have focused upon real terrorist threats -not imaginary, partisan ones- like, say, a Rudolph Giuliani, wouldn't have been a willing participant in such a sham report.
