Sarah Palin's choice for attorney general of Alaska once wrote a column defending the statue of a Ku Klux Klan figure as an expression of free speech and mocked the psychology of a college student who protested the display.

Ross and Palin.jpg

The political resume of Wayne Anthony Ross, pictured at the left alongside the governor, includes "derogatory remarks about homosexuals, accusations of sexism, and bizarre comments downplaying the fallout of the Exxon Valdez oil spill,'' Sam Stein notes at the Huffington Post today.

"But his most controversial incident may have come in December 1991, when he penned an op-ed for the Anchorage Times, entitled "KKK 'art' project gets 'A' for courage."

Interestingly enough, this piece isn't included in the list of published articles on Ross' actual resume.

"The crux of the piece is a defense of one particular art student's statue of a KKK figure -- created for a class assignment to "depict a monster" -- that the University of Alaska-Anchorage had put on display,'' Stein notes.

In the process, Ross insisted that he was no racist. "I am a card-carrying member of the Congress of Racial Equality," he wrote. "I have never supported David Duke, and never will."

"But the column was filled with racial and political insensitivities that, even in the relatively homogenous Alaska, were bound (perhaps designed) to stir the pot. Ross repeatedly chided one particular student, Clara Bynum -- who, Ross noted, was a member of the Afro-America Student Association -- for having the gall to protest the statue.

"A 35-year-old psychology student," Ross wrote, "Ms. Bynum was obviously letting her inner hostilities rise to the surface. Perhaps by the time she completes her psychology studies, Ms. Bynum will have the training and desire to control such emotions."

But the most dangerous Hypocrite in a Common-Wealth, is one who leaves the Gospel for the sake of the Law: A Man compounded of Law and Gospel, is able to cheat a whole Country with his Religion, and then destroy them under Colour of Law: And here the Clergy are in great Danger of being deceiv'd, and the People of being deceiv'd by the Clergy, until the Monster arrives to such Power and Wealth, that he is out of the reach of both, and can oppress the People without their own blind Assistance. And it is a sad Observation, that when the People too late see their Error, yet the Clergy still persist in their Encomiums on the Hypocrite; and when he happens to die for the Good of his Country, without leaving behind him the Memory of one good Action, he shall be sure to have his Funeral Sermon stuff'd with Pious Expressions which he dropt at such a Time, and at such a Place, and on such an Occasion; than which nothing can be more prejudicial to the Interest of Religion, nor indeed to the Memory of the Person deceas'd. The Reason of this Blindness in the Clergy is, because they are honourably supported (as they ought to be) by their People, and see nor feel nothing of the Oppression which is obvious and burdensome to every one else.

Was it a statue of Robert Byrd??? Another hit piece on Sarah Palin!! Come on Mark....get over your fascination with Palin and find other ways to attack Republicans!!!!

That's the best you can do to slime Republicans, Mark?

And Mark, if you're just going to dredge up HuffPo filth, why read The Swamp at all? Why shouldn't readers go direct to the source--or cesspool?

If (god forbid) Palin ever found herself in the White House, this would be the type of person she would have in her administration. Diplomacy would be back in the garbage.

TRANSLATION: We want more from our favorite cesspool!

So what? I suppose now we cannot have opinions that differ from the politically correct party line. Just more crap dredged up from that beacon of honesty and integrity the Huffington Post.

from another Swamp thread: http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2009/04/michelle_obama_carla_bruni_sma.html

This question was never answered. Which says it all.

Lou, one very simple question.
Anyone who has voted for Democrat Sen. Byrd, are they racist? Yes or No.

No, PG. They're West Virginians.

YELLOW SARAH P.
(Sung to the Beatles song “Yellow Submarine”)

In the state where she was born,
The A.I.P. wants to secede,
Todd, “the First Dude’s” bossy wife,
Yes, her name is Sarah P.

Once the mayor of Wasilla,
And a one-time beauty queen,
Now she shills for “Arctic Cat”
Cheering for Todd’s snow-machine.

Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.
Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.

And her friends just love their boss,
Meg Stapleton and old Wayne Ross,
Now their band begins to play…

(Trumpets play)
DaDaDaDumpDeDumpDeDump
DaDaDaDumpDeDumpDeDump

Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.
Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.

(Full speed ahead, Ms. Palin, full speed!
Russia’s over here, Mam!
Putin! Putin!
Aye, aye, Mam, fire!
Guv’nor! Guv’nor!)

Now she lives a life of ease,
But can’t recite her A-B-C’s, (her A-B-C’s)
“Hockey Mom” (hockey mom), with “lipstick on”, (lipstick on)
Savior of (savior of) the G.O.P. (G.O.P.) (Hahaha!)

Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.
Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.

(fading)

Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.
Alaska must get rid of Sarah P.,
Rid of Sarah P., Rid of Sarah P.

Free speech is free speech. I agree with this whacko's position defending the KKK "art."

I'm an atheist and a liberal, but I pray to God that Sarah is the GOP nominee in 2012. She is a train wreck.

Hey lynnrockets!....My God!!! What the hell is that all about???? It's time to get off the drugs and come back from LA LA land!!!!

Real not rhetorical question: Has everyone here---the principals in the story, Mr. Silva, and all those commenting lost their minds?

As I read it: 18 years ago (fer cryin' out loud), our man Ross defended a statue of a KKK figure that was intended to depict "a monster." So if KKK = "monster," then the statue is ANTI-RACIST and Ross is on the PC side, is he not? Wouldn't most of us agree that depicting the KKK as monstrous gets an "A for courage?"
Yet his defense of the anti-KKK statue was somehow filled with racial "insensitivities." I can't quite figure that out, except to wonder if he was defending the statue because he didn't actually understand it in the first place, i.e. it was supposed to be anti-racist, depicting the KKK as monstrous, but he took it to be pro-KKK and then defended it from that standpoint. (Given the rest of his resume, as summarized above, that's the only explanation that makes sense.)
Then there's student Clara Bynum, protesting the statue. Why would an African-American protest an anti-KKK statue???
Then our man Ross insults her for protesting it!
Really, we are an illiterate and a doomed people.

Ah, another negative Sarah Palin story.

Where is the story on VP Biden's daughter, Ashley nosing up lines of cocaine while being videotaped? (New York Post story)

Where is the story on Obama's brother who was invited to the inaugural, but Britian refused entry due to charges of sexual assault on an underage girl?

Only stories on Palin and her family and any other story that can be dug up.

Slanted reporting.

Yeah, among the racially insensitive things Ross says in that article:

"But a KKK figure is a real monster. And the nightmare of racial prejudice is real also. And if we are ever to achieve equality of races in this country, we must be prepared to fight such monsters and end such nightmares, once and for all."

The horror! How dare Ross denounce a KKK figure as a monster!

Seriously, this is a silly attempt to gin up a controversy where none exists.

Really ? The huffington post as a "news" source??

If (god forbid) Palin ever found herself in the White House, this would be the type of person she would have in her administration. Diplomacy would be back in the garbage.

Posted by: Janstress | April 14, 2009 12:34 PM

What "type" of person do you mean? Do you have a problem with someone standing up for the 1st amendment and AT THE SAME TIME denoincing the evils of the KKK...?

Why not just call Palin and Ross "you people..." and stop being so vague and indirect with your language?

Joe,
It's a song parody.

Many have been posted here, but not by cons., except JD did a right wing 'Imagine' once. Not too bad, either.

Nice one, Lynnrockets

Joe's song would be, 'Thick as a Brick', by Jethro Tull.

Really don't mind if you sit this one out.
My words but a whisper -- your deafness a shout.
I may make you feel but I can't make you think.
Your sperms in the gutter -- your loves in the sink.
So you ride yourselves over the fields and
You make all your animal deals and
Your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick.

"Interestingly enough, this piece isn't included in the list of published articles on Ross' actual resume."

Yes, it is. Page 6.

And the real Bemused steps out of the shadows.

Like I care what C. Morris or his fellow Obama hate squad thinks. Go ahead and support suppression of free speech. The Republican goons are right about you. One taste of power and you all go overboard trashing and threatening those who don't agree with you. Just a little taste of your own medicine, hater. Now, you may apologize for trashing your fellow Americans and diminishing real racism by tagging as racists those who don't agree with you. You can apologize for your repeated vile attacks, but you won't. Smugness, arrogance, and intolerance are what the Obama people practice. Hypocrites, all.

Anyone defending this guy Ross might also want to check into his misogynistic statements on rape, his homophobia, and a few other issues. Sarah's judgment is terrible on this one.
C., was that the real bemused?

Bemused-
Yowza, you even made the veins in MY temples throb with your post, my teeth gritted and grinding in consuming hatred, foam speckles at the corners of my mouth.

Hows YOUR soul doing today angry Bemused? You think dropping the F-bomb is going to get you past the pearly gates into the "members (believers) only" country club?
Enjoy your obviously needed blood pressured meds, yikes.
Erick

Flo, kindly provide the exact quotes upon which you claim Mr. Ross made "misogynistic statements on rape, his homophobia and a few other issues." Otherwise, keep you Huffington Post/Swamp baseless smears to yourself.

I have to agree with a blinkin. I'm in hearty disagreement with Ross's opinion, but he still has a right to state it. Of course, once out, then anyone else has a right to object to it (,GREG!) in accordance with THEIR rights. The fact that he did indeed state his opinion freely is a testament to his right to free speech, as is the right of Huffington Press to state their reaction. Both show that the system is working, not that it's broken down.
.
Two past occurrences come to mind when I read this. One was an art student (at Chicago's Art Institute School, I think) who set up a piece such that anyone viewing it had to get to it by walking on an American flag. I supported his right to express himself AND stated that it was in poor taste to have done what he did.

The second instance was the American Nazi Party (a RIGHT-wing, not leftist organization, by the way) who wanted to march in Skokie many years ago. It was a painful thing for the citizens of Skokie to have to look forward to; anyone with a brain would treat the ANP like a contagious disease, and people who would support that party are really scary people -- but they HAD A RIGHT TO MARCH, and they got their permit (thanks, by the way, to the ACLU). As it turns out, both marchers and spectators were, let's just say, less than overwhelming.

The good that can be gleaned from both those instances is that it got people to talk about things from both sides of the spectrum. Hopefully we can get the same out of this.

Do a little research, Bemused.
How about "if you can't rape your wife, who can you rape?"
There's one for you. Stop lying about me, I don't read Huffington Post. Oh, and kisses from Sarah, Bemused.

I don't know, CMorris; bemused has been irrational in the past, but this might be an over the top imposter.... Bewitched.

Bemused, you're a class act. You are a great example of all the Republican Party has to offer. Keep it up. Post more. Show the world what the inner thoughts of the Right really are like.

Erick, wow! I missed that whole post! Had to check back to see what you could possibly be talking about, and when I read "Bemused"'s post of 10:19 am, I saw what you meant. That post should NEVER have gotten up here, according to the "obscenity" AND the "over the top" requirements. Perhaps Swamp let it slip to be an embarassment to poor "Bemused", who may have counted on its being censored. (Again, I'd say that's proof positive that conservatives are NOT being censored, but then what do I know?)
.
Poor Republicans need to be more pitied than anything, so please try to be patient. They are, as I'm sure you're aware, victims of everything NOT conservative in this world (apparently including their need to project their own failings onto others), and that's a hard burden to shoulder.
.
I've always found it interesting that Republicans can spew forth all the hate they want but it isn't hate -- just amusement at our stupidity. They can tell people to keep their baseless smears to themselves and that isn't in any way like trying to deny first amendment rights to others. Yet, at the same time, comments (entirely neutral, I might add) by C. Morris are "hate speech" and a "suppression of [their] free speech." Most interesting indeed.
.
Yes, Republicans should be pitied. They're not quite all right, you see.

I agree with the DNC. Please keep posting your rants bemused, this is precisely why your party is lost, has no ideas and has been relegated to the extreme minority.

Keep posting, just keep posting.
